FOSDEM to Go app for iOS
by Horst Gutmann 25 Feb '20

25 Feb '20

Hi :) Right before this year’s FOSDEM I started working on a new iOS app for keeping track of all the talks I wanted to attend. It was mainly done as an exercise for me to learn Swift and UIKit but perhaps it will also be useful to others. The code is available on https://github.com/zerok/fosdem-to-go and there is currently a TestFlight going on for version 0.1 with plans to move it into the AppStore in the next couple of weeks. The app uses a custom logo which is at least partially related to the official FOSDEM logo: https://github.com/zerok/fosdem-to-go/blob/master/FosdemToGo/Assets.xcasset… I have one question regarding the logo, though: Do I need to put credits for the official logo somewhere into the app? There *will* be a part in the credits informing the user that the schedule is fetched directly from fosdem.org. The application has far fewer features than https://github.com/johanhenselmans/fosdem but it works in a different way regarding how information is organized and presented. Kind regards, Horst

Coronavirus
by hostilius 21 Feb '20

21 Feb '20

Hello, Fosdem brings together people from many places all over the world, which is awesome. But the timing of this year's Fosdem is unfortunate. I suggest to discuss the potential effect of the Coronavirus (2019nCov) on Fosdem, and potential measures. The new virus appears to be transmittable from person to person, even by people not showing any symptoms yet (this is different from the SARS 2002 virus). Based on today's reports from Hong Kong university, the virus might have an incubation period around 10 days. Currently 44000 people are estimated to be infected (not yet sick), and that number might double every 6 days. The city of Wuhan (11 million inhabitants) was put under lockdown on Jan 23. However, it is estimated that 5 million people were able to leave the city prior to the lockdown. I think this means, it's currently unknown how successful the quarantine effort is. Another developer conference by a large Telco, that was originally planned to take place mid February in Shenzen (more than 1000 km away from Wuhan), was already canceled. How likely is it that the virus might already be spreading internationally, with the majority of cases still being unnoticed, because of the long incubation period? How likely is it that the virus reaches the Fosdem venue and that many attendees will catch it, thereby putting themselves at risk, and further contributing to a quick international distribution? Kind Regards, a regular Fosdem visitor. Sent with [ProtonMail](https://protonmail.com) Secure Email.

20 years of t-shirts - a photo op?
by Marquis de Geek 08 Feb '20

08 Feb '20

Does anyone (other than me!) think it would be a fun idea to gather 20 of us together, each wearing a (F)OSDEM t-shirt from a different year? It doesn't have to be your first shirt. Or the earliest one that fits. Just to see if we can get them all in one chronological line! Happy to co-ordinate off-list, if the thread gets spammy! This is too much. Thanks for your comments joining the dots between these disturbing privacy incidents. Quoting[1] Matthias Kirschner, FSFE President: "One general wish -- which I agreed with -- from Debian was to better share information about people" This appears to be fundamentally at odds with CNIL and European data protection principles. Jambert's own comments would be most welcome. Regards, Daniel 1. https://fsfellowship.eu/fsfe-general-assembly-formalizes-stasi-harassment-c…

Leaving a talk
by Lennard Indlekofer 02 Feb '20

02 Feb '20

I noticed that many people in Janson are leaving the building during the questions. It would be nice if you could wait until the questions are done. As a volunteer we I had a hard time seeing the people who wanted to ask the question and it was quite loud so you also didn't understand anything. So it would be nice to wait for the questions to be done :)
