Call for Participation: Open Source Design Devroom at FOSDEM 2023
by Nimisha Vijay 11 Nov '22

11 Nov '22

[FOSDEM](https://fosdem.org) is the Free and Open source Software Developers’ European Meeting, a free and non-commercial two-day weekend event that offers all open source contributors a place to meet, share ideas, learn and collaborate. Every year, thousands of free and open source software contributors from all over the world gather at the event in Brussels, Belgium. After 2 virtual editions, FOSDEM 2023 will be a hybrid event, taking place in Brussels and online on the **4th and 5th of February 2023.** ## Open Source Design @ FOSDEM Open Source Design has been a part of FOSDEM for 8 years now, showcasing the work of designers involved with free, libre, and open source projects. This year our devroom will be a **half-day event on Sunday afternoon 5 February 2023 from 13:00 to 17:00 CET.** This will include talks about design work in FLOSS. It will happen at the Solbosch campus of the Université Libre Brussels. All talks will be livestreamed so you can tune in from anywhere in the world! ## Get involved! **We invite you to give a talk about contributing design to open source projects!** "Design" can mean anything including typography, graphic design, interaction design, user experience, human-computer interaction, accessibility, information architecture, content strategy, service design, user research, design research and more. You don't have to be an expert in the field -- you could have been involved in a project for as little as a year or as long as a decade. As long as you have been involved with design in any respect in an open source project, we're interested to hear what you think! Here are some topics that may inspire your talk: - Your experiences contributing to design in an open source project - How you use FLOSS tools to design - An open source project which is an example of great design - Your design process, research methods, and go-to resources while working with open source projects - Your ideas on fostering diversity and inclusion in design and open source - Anything else related to design and FLOSS! ## What is the talk format? The majority of talks will be in person, and we expect some to be remote. The length of your talk should be **20 minutes** with **5 mins** for questions, or **25 minutes** without questions. - If you are giving your talk in person, you will deliver the talk live and you need to be physically present at the event in Brussels. - If you are giving your talk remotely, you need to send in a pre-recorded talk and you are required to be online with a stable internet connection when it is being presented and for 5 to 10 minutes after it is done for questions. ## How can I submit a talk? You can submit a talk using the [FOSDEM Pentabarf]( https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM23/) tool; - If you already have an account on Pentabarf, login through that. - If you don't have an account, create one. - When you've logged in, find the "New event" link on the left hand side, and fill out the details of your talk. - **Let us know when you are submitting your talk whether you will be at the devroom physically during your talk or if you would be giving a talk remotely.** You can do this by including it and the end of the title of your talk. Example: - "How to contribute to open source design [REMOTE]" - "Is open source design diverse? [INPERSON]" - Make sure the field "Track" is set to "Open source design devroom" otherwise we won't receive your talk proposal! - This [beginner's guide to Pentabarf]( https://eyskens.me/beginners-guide-to-pentabarf/) can be helpful if you are unfamiliar with the tool. ## What's the deadline? - Talk proposals must be submitted on or before **5 December 2022**. - Accepted talks would be announced on **15 December 2022**. - If you are giving a talk remotely, your video recording must be submitted by **20 January 2023**. - You must be present at the event or online, depending on your talk format, during your talk on **5 February 2023**. All deadlines times are 23:59 UTC. If your talk is accepted, an Open Source Design volunteer will keep in touch with you to help you meet deadlines and with any technical difficulties you may face. ## Additional information The Open Source Design devroom at FOSDEM 2023 will be at the Solbosch campus of the [Université Libre Brussels,]( https://goo.gl/maps/iBkf3SdRXPmpenUD9) Belgium as well as online on 5 February, 2023. The exact room will be announced closer to the date of the event. Be sure to read the [FOSDEM Code of Conduct]( https://fosdem.org/2023/practical/conduct/) If you have any questions, reach out to us on the [Open Source Design forum]( https://discourse.opensourcedesign.net/t/so-youd-like-to-speak-at-fosdem-bu… ). We are looking forward to seeing you at FOSDEM 2023!

[CFP] Virtualization & IaaS Devroom
by Piotr Kliczewski 10 Nov '22

10 Nov '22

We are excited to announce that the call for proposals is now open for the Virtualization & IaaS devroom at the upcoming FOSDEM 2023, to be hosted on February 4th 2023. This devroom is a collaborative effort, and is organized by dedicated folks from projects such as OpenStack, Xen Project, KubeVirt, QEMU, KVM, and Foreman. We would like to invite all those who are involved in these fields to submit your proposals by December 10th, 2022. About the Devroom The Virtualization & IaaS devroom will feature session topics such as open source hypervisors or virtual machine managers such as Xen Project, KVM, bhyve and VirtualBox as well as Infrastructure-as-a-Service projects such as KubeVirt, Apache CloudStack, OpenStack, QEMU and OpenNebula. This devroom will host presentations that focus on topics of shared interest, such as KVM; libvirt; shared storage; virtualized networking; cloud security; clustering and high availability; interfacing with multiple hypervisors; hyperconverged deployments; and scaling across hundreds or thousands of servers. Presentations in this devroom will be aimed at developers working on these platforms who are looking to collaborate and improve shared infrastructure or solve common problems. We seek topics that encourage dialog between projects and continued work post-FOSDEM. Important Dates Submission deadline: 10th December 2022 Acceptance notifications: 15th December 2022 Final schedule announcement: 20th December 2022 Devroom: First half of 4th February 2023 Submit Your Proposal All submissions must be made via the Pentabarf event planning site[1]. If you have not used Pentabarf before, you will need to create an account. If you submitted proposals for FOSDEM in previous years, you can use your existing account. After creating the account, select Create Event to start the submission process. Make sure to select Virtualization and IaaS devroom from the Track list. Please fill out all the required fields, and provide a meaningful abstract and description of your proposed session. Submission Guidelines We expect more proposals than we can possibly accept, so it is vitally important that you submit your proposal on or before the deadline. Late submissions are unlikely to be considered. All presentation slots are 30 minutes, with 20 minutes planned for presentations, and 10 minutes for Q&A. All presentations will be recorded and made available under Creative Commons licenses. In the Submission notes field, please indicate that you agree that your presentation will be licensed under the CC-By-SA-4.0 or CC-By-4.0 license and that you agree to have your presentation recorded. For example: "If my presentation is accepted for FOSDEM, I hereby agree to license all recordings, slides, and other associated materials under the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 4.0 International License. Sincerely, <NAME>." In the Submission notes field, please also confirm that if your talk is accepted, you will be able to attend FOSDEM and deliver your presentation. We will not consider proposals from prospective speakers who are unsure whether they will be able to secure funds for travel and lodging to attend FOSDEM. (Sadly, we are not able to offer travel funding for prospective speakers.) Submission Guidelines Mentored presentations will have 25-minute slots, where 20 minutes will include the presentation and 5 minutes will be reserved for questions. The number of newcomer session slots is limited, so we will probably not be able to accept all applications. You must submit your talk and abstract to apply for the mentoring program, our mentors are volunteering their time and will happily provide feedback but won't write your presentation for you! If you are experiencing problems with Pentabarf, the proposal submission interface, or have other questions, you can email our devroom mailing list[2] and we will try to help you. How to Apply In addition to agreeing to video recording and confirming that you can attend FOSDEM in case your session is accepted, please write "speaker mentoring program application" in the "Submission notes" field, and list any prior speaking experience or other relevant information for your application. Code of Conduct Following the release of the updated code of conduct for FOSDEM, we'd like to remind all speakers and attendees that all of the presentations and discussions in our devroom are held under the guidelines set in the CoC and we expect attendees, speakers, and volunteers to follow the CoC at all times. If you submit a proposal and it is accepted, you will be required to confirm that you accept the FOSDEM CoC. If you have any questions about the CoC or wish to have one of the devroom organizers review your presentation slides or any other content for CoC compliance, please email us and we will do our best to assist you. Call for Volunteers We are also looking for volunteers to help run the devroom. We need assistance watching time for the speakers, and helping with video for the devroom. Please contact devroom mailing list [2] for more information. Questions? If you have any questions about this devroom, please send your questions to our devroom mailing list. You can also subscribe to the list to receive updates about important dates, session announcements, and to connect with other attendees. See you all at FOSDEM! # FOSDEM 2023: Nix and NixOS devroom So, we got [a devroom at FOSDEM 2023](https://fosdem.org/2023/news/2022-11-07-accepted-developer-rooms/)! 🎊 This means you, the community, will have yet another chance to give talks about everything Nix! This will be, as far as we're aware, *the first* time Nix got its own devroom at FOSDEM, and this in the same year Nix will celebrate its 20th birthday. So, let's make it a good first edition.  FOSDEM is [in their words](https://fosdem.org/2023/), > FOSDEM is a free event for software developers to meet, share ideas and collaborate. > > Every year, thousands of developers of free and open source software from all over the world gather at the event in Brussels. Thanks to Matthew Croughan, Ryan Lahfa, Théophane Hufschmitt and Bryan Honof for submitting devroom proposals. We found out that more than one group submitted for a devroom during NixCon. 😓 ## Calls for Participation We are looking for talks about Nix, use-cases of Nix or any related project. Do keep in mind however that FOSDEM being a community event, we won't accept any vendor or sales pitch. The talks can either be _lightning talks_ (5 mins) or _full-featured talks_ (20 mins). ## Practical Information - The CfP is hosted by FOSDEM themselves. Head over to [Pentabarf, their CfP platform](https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM23), and follow the instructions on the landing page. Most fields are optional, just make sure that you: - Set the “Track” to “Nix and NixOS” - Set the “Event type” to either “Lightning talk” or “Presentation” - Fill in the “Event Title” and “Short Abstract” - Should Pentabarf fail you, feel free to send us a mail with the relevant information to nix-devroom-manager(a)fosdem.org. - Presentation proposals should be submitted before 2022-12-07 23:59 CET. The list of accepted talks and the program will be announced on 2022-12-15. - FOSDEM takes place in Brussels on the first weekend of February 2023 (2023-02-04 and 2023-02-05). The Nix devroom is set for 2023-02-05 in the afternoon (the precise time slot is still TBD, but it should start around 13:00 and end at 17:00). The focus gradually widened to include component-based, unikernel-based and other operating systems. By now, it has become a somewhat institutionalized tradition for the open source operating systems community and it is one of the few places where microkernel / unikernel enthusiasts and people with different views on how operating systems should work meet regularly. To this date, over a dozen projects have participated in one way or another. Many of the projects face similar challenges but come up with partially different solutions. Therefore, the goal of the devroom is to bring the various projects together, let them exchange ideas, cross-pollinate and socialize. HOW TO SUBMIT A TALK - Head to the FOSDEM 2023 Pentabarf website: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM23 - If you already have a Pentabarf account, please don’t create a new one. - If you forgot your password, reset it. - Otherwise, follow the instructions to create an account. - Once logged in, select “Create Event” and click on “Show All” in the top right corner to display the full form. - Your submission must include the following information: - First and last name / Nickname (optional)/ Image - Email address - Mobile phone number (this is a very hard requirement as there will be no other reliable form of emergency communication on the day) - Title and subtitle of your talk (please be descriptive, as titles will be listed with ~500 from other projects) - Track: Select "Microkernel and Component-based OS DevRoom" as the track - Event type: Lecture (talk) - Persons: Add yourself as the speaker with your bio - Description: Abstract (required)/ Full Description (optional) - Links to related websites / blogs etc. - Beyond giving us the above, let us know if there’s anything else you’d like to share as part of your submission – Twitter handle, GitHub activity history – whatever works for you. We especially welcome videos of you speaking elsewhere, or even just a list of talks you have done previously. First time speakers are, of course, welcome! - For issues with Pentabarf, please contact myself or Simon. SBOM devroom info and CfP
by Alexios Zavras 09 Nov '22

09 Nov '22

# FOSDEM 2023 - SBOM devroom info and CfP ## Overview [FOSDEM] is one of the world's premier meetings of free software developers, with thousands of people attending each year. FOSDEM 2023 will take place on the weekend of 4-5 February 2023 and it will be an in-person event in Brussels once again! For the first time, a track ("devroom") about Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) has been accepted in the conference. ## Details The devroom will take place for half a day (09:00-12:50), on Sunday morning, as an in-person event in a room to be announced at a later time. The SBOM Devroom at FOSDEM 2023 is an informal, technical, in-person event oriented to authors, users, and enthusiasts of FLOSS programs that produce, consume, or transform SBOMs. While other domains like construction, mechanical engineering, or even computer hardware have long used the concept of Bill of Materials (BOMs), software traditionally has not followed this best practice. There have been efforts running for over a decade to address this, and recent developments have pushed forward the use and wide adoption of Software BOMs. Since most of today’s software is made up of Open Source, it is important that this information can be accurately conveyed. It includes, but is not limited to, metadata such as name and version but also licensing or security information. The goal of the devroom is for interested people to get in touch with each other, exchange ideas and opinions, have interesting and hopefully productive discussions, and finally what is most important: to have fun. **We are looking for presenters!** ## Call for participation We are interested in presentations on any topic related to Software Bill of Materials: content, definitions, standardization efforts, tools, etc. An indicative, non-exclusive, list of topics: - Tools that produce SBOMs or related information - Tools that consume SBOMs to generate other information - Case studies and lessons learned from real-life use or introduction of SBOMs - Use of different types of SBOMs (e.g., Source, Build, Runtime, etc.) - Linking and verification of SBOMs to other relevant artifacts - Special areas of interest not covered by current SBOM formats, that need discussion to be included Any effort that would lead on increasing collaboration between different approaches and tools are particularly encouraged. ### Key dates - 28 November: Submission deadline - 16 December: Announcement of selected talks - 5 February: SBOM devroom in FOSDEM - You must be available in person to present your talk ### Submision process Please use the [Pentabarf] system to submit a talk proposal for the devroom. On the "General" tab, please look for the "Track" option and choose "Software Bill of Materials devroom". Note: if you have used FOSDEM Pentabarf before, please do _not_ create a new account/username but rather use your existing one. ### First-time speakers FOSDEM devrooms are a welcoming environment for people who have never given a talk before. Please feel free to contact the devroom administrators personally if you would like to ask any questions about it. ### Submission guidelines The Pentabarf system will ask for many of the essential details. Remember to re-use your account from previous years if you have one. We will be looking for relevance to the conference and devroom themes, but essentially any presentation about SBOMs would qualify. Please note that the audience is expected to be _developers_ of Free and Open Source Software and will most probably be _knowledgeable_ in at least some aspects of SBOMs. Therefore aim your presentation accordingly. Feel free to indicate your preferred duration for your presentation between 5 and 30 minutes, but please note that the final decision on duration will be made by the devroom administrators based on the number of accepted proposals. As the overall duration of the devroom is fixed and rather short, no presentation will exceed 30 minutes (including Q&A), so that more speakers can participate. Keep in mind that, as the event will be in-person, we also need to account for switching between speakers. Shorter presentation are **strongly** encouraged! Please note FOSDEM aims to record and live-stream all talks. The CC-BY license is used for the recordings. ## Volunteers needed To make the devroom run successfully, we are always looking for volunteers. If you will be attending the devroom and would like to help, please reach out to the organizers! ## Spread the word and discuss If you know of any mailing lists or other online venues where this info and CfP would be relevant, please feel free to forward this document. ## Contact The organizers of the devroom can be reached by sending email to sbom-devroom-manager(a)fosdem.org. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any inquiry or suggestion for the devroom. For any private queries, you may also contact the organizers directly: - Alexios Zavras fosdem(a)zvr.gr - Kate Stewart stewart(a)linux.com [FOSDEM]: https://fosdem.org [Pentabarf]: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM23/ [this is also available as https://gist.github.com/zvr/c852b4a560ac2c67885c473034cd4a93] -- zvr -

Call for Participation: Public Code and Digital Public Goods devroom
by Jan Ainali 09 Nov '22

09 Nov '22

Hello everyone, We are happy to announce that the call for participation in the FOSDEM 2023 devroom for Public Code and Digital Public Goods has opened. It's a devroom dedicated to everyone developing public code - open source code that implements public policy, used for the public good, and by public organizations like governments, public administrations and state corporations. The devroom will take place on Sunday 5th February 2023 in Brussels. We are looking for contributions that would fit within the main theme of the devroom. Below are some questions that could inspire your proposal: * have you tried to replicate and/or co-develop with another public organization? what did you learn along the way? * do you have any procurement and/or governance models (or hacks!) that helped you use, reuse and co-develop public code or digital public goods? * are you working on and/or using some awesome public code or digital public good that has the potential for reuse, and the world needs to hear about? If you have another idea for a talk that you think would fit, please don't hesitate to let us know! We hope that this will be an opportunity for everyone to meet and exchange ideas about public code and digital public goods around the world. We welcome submissions from projects that have never been to FOSDEM before, as well as from 'old timers'. = Submission process = Please submit your proposals at [1] before **December 5th 2022**. If you already have a Pentabarf account (for example as a result of having submitted a proposal in the past), make sure you use it to log in and submit your proposal. Do not create a new account if you already have one. Please provide a bit of information about yourself under Person -> Description -> Abstract. When you submit your proposal (creating an "Event" in Pentabarf), make sure you choose the "Public Code and Digital Public Goods devroom" in the track drop-down menu. Otherwise, your proposal might go unnoticed. Fill in at least a title and abstract for the proposed talk and a suggested duration. Bear in mind that a lot of the value in these meetings comes from the discussions, so please consider the talk-to-discussion-ratio in your proposal. As we only have a half day for the entire track, you'll have a better chance of being accepted if you opt to make a shorter presentation. = Important dates = * December 5th 2022: deadline for submission of proposals * December 15th 2022 or before: announcement of final schedule * February 5th 2023: devroom day - You must be available in person to present your talk = Recordings = The talks are usually recorded on-site. Any recordings will be published under the same license as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY). By agreeing to present in the Public Code and Digital Public Goods devroom, you automatically give permission to be recorded. - Foundation for Public Code and Digital Public Goods Alliance, co-organizers of the devroom [1] https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM23
