CfP to the Matrix Foundation and Community DevRoom
by Thibault Martin 04 Nov '24

04 Nov '24

Hello everyone, The Matrix.org Foundation is excited to host a Matrix.org Foundation and Community devroom in person next year again at FOSDEM! Half a day of talks, demos and workshops around Matrix itself and projects built on top of Matrix. We encourage people working on the Matrix protocol or building on it in an open source project to submit a proposal! Note that companies are welcome to talk about the Matrix details of their open source projects, but marketing talks are not welcome. ## Key dates - Conference dates: 1st and 2nd February, 2025 - Devroom date: 2nd February, 2025 - Submission deadline: Sunday, 1st December, 2024 - Announcement of selected talks: Friday, 15th December, 2024 You must be available in person in Brussels <https://fosdem.org/2025/practical/transportation/> to present your talk. ## Talk Details The talks can follow one of the two formats: - 20 min talk + 10 min Q&A, for topics that can be covered briefly - 50 min talk + 10 min Q&A, for more complex subjects which need more focus We strongly encourage you to prepare a demo when it makes sense, so people can actually see what your work looks like in practice. Of course, the proposal must respect the FOSDEM terms as well: > The conference language is English. All content must relate to Free and Open Source Software. By participating in the event you agree to the publication of your recordings, slides and other content provided under the same licence as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY). ## Code of Conduct All speakers and attendees agree that all of the presentations and discussions in our devroom are held under the guidelines set in the FOSDEM Code of Conduct <https://fosdem.org/2025/practical/conduct/>. We expect attendees, speakers, and volunteers to follow the CoC at all times. If you have any questions about the CoC or wish to have one of the devroom organisers review your presentation slides or any other content for CoC compliance, please email us and we will do our best to assist you. ## Submitting a Proposal Proposals must be submitted on FOSDEM's conference management system: https://pretalx.fosdem.org/. Heads up that last year FOSDEM shelved the good old Pentabarf in favour of Pretalx. All submissions must go through Pretalx: https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2025/cfp. When submitting a proposal, make sure to select the Matrix.org Foundation & Community track. We expect to receive more requests than we have slots available. The devroom organisers will be reviewing the proposals and accepting them based on the potential positive impact the project has on Matrix, as defined in the Mission section of https://matrix.org/foundation <https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2025/cfp>. If a project proposal has been turned down, it doesn't mean we don't believe it has good potential. Maintainers are invited to join the #twim:matrix.org <https://matrix.to/#/%23twim:matrix.org> Matrix room to give it some visibility. Best, The Matrix.org Foundation & Community

SBOM devroom info and CfP -- FOSDEM 2025
by Alexios Zavras 04 Nov '24

04 Nov '24

The following (in Markdown format) is also available at https://hackmd.io/@spdx/FOSDEM-2025-CfP ------ # FOSDEM 2025 - SBOM devroom info and CfP ## Overview [FOSDEM] is one of the world's premier meetings of free software developers, with thousands of people attending each year. FOSDEM 2025 will take place on the weekend of 1-2 February 2024 in Brussels. This is the Call for Participation (CfP) in the Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) Devroom at FOSDEM 2025. ## Details The SBOM Devroom will take place for a full day (09:00-17:00), on Sunday 2 February 2024, and will be an in-person event in a room to be announced later. The SBOM Devroom at FOSDEM is an informal, technical event oriented to authors, users, and enthusiasts of FLOSS programs that produce, consume, or transform SBOMs. While other domains like construction, mechanical engineering, or even computer hardware have long used the concept of Bill of Materials (BOMs), software traditionally has not followed this best practice. There have been efforts running for over a decade to address this, and recent developments have pushed forward the use and wide adoption of Software BOMs. Since most of today’s software is made up of Open Source, it is important that this information can be accurately conveyed. It includes, but is not limited to, metadata such as name and version, but also licensing or security information. The goal of the devroom is for interested people to get in touch with each other, exchange ideas and opinions, have interesting and hopefully productive discussions, and finally what is most important: have fun. **We are looking for presenters!** ## Call for participation We are interested in presentations on any topic related to Software Bill of Materials: usage, content, definitions, standardization efforts, etc. An indicative, non-exclusive, list of topics is: - Use of different types of SBOMs (e.g., Design, Source, Build, Deployed, Runtime, etc.) in the Software Supply Chain - Verification and linking of SBOMs to other relevant artifacts - Case studies and lessons learned from real-life use or introduction of SBOMs - Special areas of interest not covered by current SBOM formats, that need discussion to be included ### Key dates * 1 December: Submission deadline (be careful: Brussels time!) * 15 December: Announcement of devroom schedule * 2 February: SBOM devroom in FOSDEM (You must be available in person to give your presentation!) ### Submission process Please use the [FOSDEM submission] system to submit a talk proposal for the devroom. Remember to select "Software Bill of Materials" for the "Track" pop-up selection! ### First-time speakers FOSDEM devrooms are a welcoming environment for people who have never given a talk before. Please feel free to contact the devroom administrators personally if you would like to ask any questions about it. ### Submission guidelines The proposal submission system will ask for all the relevant information, in a succession of three screens. We will be looking for relevance to the conference and devroom themes, but essentially any presentation about SBOMs would qualify. Please note that the audience is expected to be _developers_ of Free and Open Source Software and will most probably be _knowledgeable_ in at least some aspects of SBOMs. Therefore aim your presentation accordingly; no need to introduce what SBOMs are, for example. Feel free to indicate in the "Submission Notes" area your preferred duration for your presentation between 5 and 45 minutes, but please note that the final decision on duration will be made by the devroom organizers based on the number of accepted proposals. As the overall duration of the devroom is fixed, the only way to accommodate more speakers is by limiting the length of each talk. Keep in mind that, as the event will be in-person, we also need to account for switching between speakers. Shorter presentations are **strongly** encouraged! Please note that FOSDEM aims to live-stream and record all presentations. The CC-BY license is used for the recordings. ## Volunteers needed To make the devroom run successfully, we are always looking for volunteers. If you will be attending the devroom and would like to help run it better, please reach out to the organizers! ## Spread the word and discuss If you know of any mailing lists or other online venues where this info and CfP would be relevant, please feel free to forward this document. ## Contact The organizers of the devroom can be reached by sending email to sbom-devroom-manager(a)fosdem.org. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any inquiry or suggestion for the devroom. For any private queries, you may also contact the organizers directly: - Alexios Zavras <fosdem(a)zvr.gr> - Kate Stewart <stewart(a)linux.com> - Adolfo García Veytia <adolfo.garcia(a)uservers.net> [FOSDEM]: https://fosdem.org [FOSDEM submission]: https://fosdem.org/submit ------ -- zvr -

by Peter van Dijk 04 Nov '24

04 Nov '24

Hello DNS enthusiasts and other developers, After several earlier successful and packed DNS devrooms, we are happy to announce another half-day DNS devroom at FOSDEM 2025. As with the previous events, we hope to host talks anywhere from hardcore protocol stuff, to practical sessions for programmers that are not directly involved with DNS but may have to deal with DNS in their day to day coding or system administrators responsible for DNS infrastructure. We have been allotted a room on Saturday the 1st of February 2025, the second half of the day, starting at 15:00 (CET). If you have something you’d like to share with your fellow developers, please head to the submission page at https://fosdem.org/submit . Examples of topics are measuring, monitoring, DNS libraries, anecdotes on how you’ve (ab)used the DNS, and group discussions of upcoming technologies. For the upcoming technologies, we're looking for submissions on Applications Doing DNS (ADD), DNS-SD (DNS Service Discovery), SVCB/HTTPS records and applications thereof, and stub-resolver configuration. Here’s the 2024 schedule, for your inspiration: https://archive.fosdem.org/2024/schedule/track/dns/ . We expect to schedule 30 minutes per talk, including questions, but if you need more or less time, we can discuss this. The deadline for submissions is Sunday the 1st of December 2024. Reach out to dns-devroom-manager(a)fosdem.org if you run into any trouble. This CfP lives online at https://blog.powerdns.com/2024/10/28/fosdem-2025-dns-developer-room-call-fo… - any important changes will be posted at least there See you there! Cheers, The FOSDEM 2025 DNS Devroom organizers

by Andreas 'ads' Scherbaum 01 Nov '24

01 Nov '24

Link to CfP: https://www.postgresql.eu/events/fosdem2025/news/fosdem-pgday-2025-call-for… FOSDEM PGDay 2025 is a one-day conference that will be held ahead of the main FOSDEM event in Brussels, Belgium, on Friday, January 31st, 2025. This will be a PostgreSQL-focused event with a single track of talks. This conference day will be for-charge with a registration of EUR 70, and will be held at the Brussels Marriott Hotel. Registration is required to attend and since we have a limited number of seats available for this event, we urge everybody to register as soon as possible once open. PostgreSQL Europe will also have our regular devroom at the main FOSDEM event on Sunday morning (February 2, 2025). This time we have a half day devroom, with 4 talks in total. This event will, of course, continue to be free of charge and open to all FOSDEM attendees. No registration is required to attend the devroom. For full details about the conference, venue and hotel, see the event website[1]. The call for papers is now open for both FOSDEM PGDay and our devroom. We are looking for talks to fill both these days with content for both insiders and new users. The CfP page on our website[2] has all the details including a link to submit talk or FOSDEM PGDay 2025. Please note that submissions for the FOSDEM devroom must be submitted in the FOSDEM system and not the PostgreSQL Europe system! For submissions to the FOSDEM devroom, please use this link[3]. If you plan to submit to both the PGDay on Friday and the Devroom on Sunday, you must submit your talk twice, once in each system. Unfortunately, we haven’t found a way to keep the talk submissions synchronised. The deadline for submissions is midnight Central European Time, November 29th, 2024, so get your submissions in soon! We will aim to notify speakers if their talks were selected or not by December 6th. We also have a special negotiated room rate with the Brussels Marriott Hotel. For details, see the venue page[4]. Call for Participation: "Modern Email" devroom
by Damian Poddebniak 01 Nov '24

01 Nov '24

Email is the workhorse of digital communication. It's one of the oldest decentralized messaging platforms, and we must keep implementations up to date with new standards/techniques/programming languages. # Call for Participation The "Modern Email" developer room seeks speakers, volunteers, and participants! We want to get together as email developers/users, learn about each other's projects, have technical discussions, exchange implementation/operational experiences, and share plans and visions for the future of email. The Devroom will be held on Saturday, February 1 2025, a full day, with primarily talks on the schedule. The submission deadline for talks is December 1st, 2024. * Speaker: As a speaker, you're invited to present your work in the developer room. * Volunteer: As a volunteer, you would be helping us out during the sessions. * Participant: As a participant, whether introverted or extroverted, you are excellent to everyone and make the day! Please distribute this CfP as widely as possible to interested parties! # Topics Some suggestions for talks: * Overview of the current state of email (as a keynote) * Your free/open source software project(s) related to email. From demo to details. * Current developments, upcoming standards, e.g. JMAP (https://jmap.io) structured email (https://structured.email) ... * Efforts to modernize our email ecosystem, e.g., through implementations in modern languages. * Integrating email with other software, e.g., through APIs. * Message/transport security/authenticity. * Experiences with deliverability, email operations, anti-spam, hosting, ... * Related technologies such as calendaring/PIM. * Visionary talks * Where should email be in 10 years? * Can we add end-to-end encryption (to the masses) through, e.g., MLS? * Can we provide simple solutions for on-prem (private) hosting? * ... # Submission We ask for a short talk abstract (+ proposed duration) and a speaker biography (+ contact info). Any material that shows your affinity to the field is also appreciated, e.g., a collection of links to your work, talks, projects, blog posts, etc. Submissions must be made through Pretalx (https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2025/cfp) no later than December 1st (23:55 CET). The suggested duration for a talk is 25 minutes (20 minutes presentation + 5 minutes Q&A). However, we explicitly invite you to propose the best duration for your talk. If the best way to present your project is a 5-minute lightning talk, we'll happily arrange a lightning session! Depending on the proposals, we may contact you to adapt the time of the session to fit the devroom schedule. Important: Choose "Modern Email" in the track drop-down menu when submitting your proposal. Once the devroom schedule is finalized, we will contact you to help you prepare your talk. # Side events ## Pre-FOSDEM Hackathon (Friday) Upon frequent request, we'd like to organize an informal pre-FOSDEM email hackathon on Friday (31st of January). Please add your name and ideas to https://hackmd.io/@ndFSGqY1SC6Cc0DEpHHU1w/r1dkwOAeyx if you're interested and if you have ideas/proposals. It would also be great if someone could provide/recommend a meeting space for the event (we'd expect some 10-20 people probably?). ## Friends-of-Email Dinner (Saturday) Following last year's good practice, we'd like to reserve a table for an informal "friends of email" dinner/drinks session either on FRI or SAT evening.
