Call for Participation: Open Media devroom 2026
by Jaron Viëtor 31 Oct '25

31 Oct '25

Hello everyone, The Open Media devroom returns at FOSDEM 2026, and we are looking for talk proposals. FOSDEM is one of the largest gatherings of Free and Open Source Software contributors in the world and happens every February in Brussels (Belgium, Europe). This year, the Open Media devroom will take place (in-person) on: Saturday (morning), January 31st, 2026. The Open Media room will focus on all Free & Open Source media projects, including software and hardware, spanning from building audio & video applications, through standards, formats, codecs, video analytics and search to Web video, IPTV, broadcasting- and radio-related subjects and much more. If you're interested in video, image or audio technologies, and the breadth of available open source technologies and communities for media - the Open Media devroom is for you! We will accept proposals until at least December 1st, 2025 and selected talks will be notified on or before December 15th, 2025. Take a look at previous year's sessions here to get a feel for if you'd fit in: https://archive.fosdem.org/2025/schedule/track/media/ You can submit proposals here: https://fosdem.org/submit Make sure you select "Open media devroom" as the track when you submit your proposal. The title of your talk should be descriptive. The abstract is a short text detailing what the talk will discuss, and why attendees should attend it. It will show up on the schedule later if your talk is selected. Feel free to put anything you think might be important for us to know when considering your talk in "Submission notes". In particular, it would be useful for us to know what possible durations your talk could fit (e.g. 10m? 15m? 25m?) and if you're doing a demo if you'll need any unusual setup (time or equipment) to make it work. Since we've only been allocated half a day this year, we will likely try to do more shorter talks rather than less longer talks. Your talk must be presented in Brussels in-person on Saturday (morning), January 31st, 2026 (speaker substitutions are possible if/as needed, contact us). All sessions will be recorded and be made available under CC-BY license by FOSDEM at https://video.fosdem.org/ . Please don't hesitate to reach out for more information or if you have any questions or worries! You can find us on IRC at #fosdem-open-media on libera.chat (ping "Thulinma" if you get no response), or send an email to open-media-devroom-devroom-manager(a)fosdem.org . Kind regards, Jaron On behalf of the Open Media devroom

Like previous years, the devroom will take place as an in-person event at the ULB Campus Solbosch in Brussels, Belgium during the second half of February 1, 2026 (Sunday). Due to the high number of submissions that FOSDEM received again this year, our devroom has only been allocated half a day. Therefore, the final decision on the duration of the talks will be made by the devroom organizers based on the number of accepted proposals. Given these restrictions, eight to nine half hour slots with a speaking time of 20 to 25 minutes and 5 to 10 minutes of Q&A form the upper limit. Requirements The communication language of the devroom is English. All content must relate to free and open-source software. By participating in the event, you agree to the publication of your talk recordings, slides and other content provided under the same CC-BY license as all other FOSDEM content. Announcements and inquiries are additionally available through the devroom mailing list https://lists.fosdem.org/listinfo/microkernel-devroom About the Devroom Since the first Microkernel OS Devroom at FOSDEM 2012, this devroom has been a part of each subsequent FOSDEM (with slight variations of the name). The focus gradually widened to include component-based and other operating systems. It has now become somewhat of a tradition for the open-source operating systems community, a kind of "extended family meeting" and it is one of the very few places where microkernel and operating-system enthusiasts meet regularly. To date, over two dozen projects have participated in one way or another. Many of the projects face similar challenges but come up with partially different solutions. Therefore, the goal of the devroom is to bring the various projects together, let them exchange ideas, cross-pollinate and socialize. As in the past, the devroom will offer the stage both to established community members and to newcomers. Our goal is to select talks in an inclusive manner and to create a balanced and unbiased schedule, while keeping the quality of the devroom as high as in previous years. About FOSDEM FOSDEM is a two-day conference organized by volunteers to promote the widespread use of free and open-source software. FOSDEM is widely recognized as one of the largest and best such events worldwide. FOSDEM covers a wide spectrum of free and open-source software and hardware projects and offers a platform for people to collaborate. To this end, FOSDEM has set up developer rooms (devrooms) where teams can meet and showcase their projects. Devrooms are a place for teams to discuss, hack and publicly present new ideas, latest results, lightning talks, news and proposals. Besides developer rooms, FOSDEM also offers main tracks, lightning talks, certification exams and project stands. In recent years, FOSDEM has been hosting more than 5000 developers annually at the ULB Solbosch Campus in Brussels, Belgium. The participation in FOSDEM is totally free and requires no registration, although the organizers gratefully accept donations and sponsorship. Devroom Dinner Over the years, it has become a tradition that devroom speakers and enthusiasts meet for dinner somewhere in Brussels after the event to continue discussions, socialize and meet old and new friends. We plan to follow that tradition in some form as well in 2026 and will inform you about the exact arrangements later. Call for Participation: Local First, sync engines and CRDTs
by Niko - NextGraph 30 Oct '25

30 Oct '25

Hello everyone, This year, the FOSDEM created a new devroom for "Local First, Sync engines and CRDTs", and we are very excited to share with you the present Call for Participation. The upcoming edition of FOSDEM 2026 will be held on Saturday 31st of January and Sunday 1st of February, at the ULB Solbosch Campus, in Brussels, Belgium. Our devroom will be held on Saturday afternoon, from 15:00 to 19:00. FOSDEM is a free event for open source software developers to meet, share ideas and collaborate. Every year, thousands of developers from all over the world gather at the event in Brussels. Local-First is a new paradigm for developing decentralized applications and software, following the motto "You own your data, in spite of the cloud". In the last years, it gained increasing adoption among programmers for its interesting properties: real-time collaboration that can also go offline temporarily and will then sync and merge without conflicts; data ownership for users, as all data is available on their devices; getting rid of cloud services and surveillance capitalism; increased security, resilience and privacy; and more. In the context of a much needed digital sovereignty in Europe, and elsewhere in the world, Free and Open Source collaborative and decentralized solutions are in strong demand. We believe that Local-First is a good answer to many of those challenges. Multiple frameworks, sync protocols, P2P protocols, sync engines, Conflict-Free Replicated Data Types (CRDTs) libraries, collaborative editors and apps, are coming to life and the developer experience is getting better by the day. We also feel the need, as members of those communities, to gather forces, exchange, and cooperate on various subjects. FOSDEM will be the perfect place for that. This devroom is also an opportunity for all developers curious and interested in Local-First, to learn more about the topic and the progress recently made. We invite all developers, engineers and researchers to present their work, contribute their advances, and meet in Brussels for some interesting cross-project exchanges and discussions. For this first edition of the Local First devroom, we are welcoming contributions in the form of talks, presentations, demos, and panel proposal, related to : - introduction to Conflict-Free Replicated Data Types (CRDTs), Local-First, Sync protocols and sync engines, their challenges and benefits. - Free and Open Source projects or libraries that implement CRDTs, and/or Local First protocols. - Research papers published in the public domain, in the field of Local First. - FOSS Frameworks, SDKs, Sync Engines, decentralized databases that enable Local First app development. - FOSS user-facing Applications that leverage Local First technologies, including real-time collaborative applications that can work offline. - and more. Don't hesitate to propose your best idea. You can find this CfP and share it with others at the link: https://openlocalfirst.org = Submission process = Please submit your proposal at https://fosdem.org/submit before Friday December 5th, 2025 at midnight CET. When submitting your proposal, make sure you choose the “Local First, Sync engine, CRDTs” entry in the track drop-down menu, otherwise, your proposal might go unnoticed. Don't hesitate to include an estimate of the time needed for your talk in the speaker notes (maximum 30min). We will try to accommodate equivalent time slots for everyone, with also some room for Q&A, unless you state otherwise. If we receive too many high quality proposals, time slots might be shorten. The conference language is English. All content must relate to Free and Open Source Software and Open Research. We encourage you to submit your proposal as early as possible, so we have enough time to review it as it deserves. Before submitting a proposal, please make sure that you will be able to attend FOSDEM and deliver your presentation in person. The conference does not accept remote presentations. We are not able to offer travel funding for prospective speakers, but entrance is free for everyone. Between the 12th and the 15th of December, if your proposal is selected, you will have to enter in the pretalx interface and validate your participation; this is important. Once the schedule of the devroom is finalized, we will contact you and share more technical details with you so you can prepare your talk successfully. = Important dates = * December 5th, 2025: CfP submission deadline * December 12th, 2025 or earlier: notification of acceptance. * December 15th, 2025: announcement of final schedule on FOSDEM website * January 31st, 2026: devroom day, from 15:00 to 19:00 = Recordings = As always at FOSDEM, the talks and Q/A sessions will be recorded. The recordings will be published under the same license as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY or CC-BY-SA). By agreeing to present at FOSDEM, you automatically give permission to be recorded. = Code of Conduct = Following the release of the updated code of conduct for FOSDEM[1], we'd like to remind all speakers and attendees that all of the presentations and discussions in our devroom are held under the guidelines set in the CoC and we expect attendees, speakers, and volunteers to follow the CoC at all times. = Contact = You can reach out at local-first-devroom-manager at fosdem.org if you have any question. To share the link of this devroom with others, please use: https://openlocalfirst.org Hope to see you soon at the Local First devroom! [1] https://fosdem.org/2026/practical/conduct/

Selected talks will highlight foundational capabilities alongside emerging AI-driven approaches, celebrating practical advancements and lessons learned. Expect focused presentations, a lightning talk burst, and a demo session---each designed to share real work and spark collaboration. ## Scope of Talks Robotics is inherently interdisciplinary, so our scope is intentionally broad while respecting neighboring FOSDEM devrooms. To help you tune your proposal, here are key areas of interest: - Core robotics libraries and applications: mapping, planning, localization, perception, and control. Examples include [Cartographer], [OMPL], [grid_map], [Octomap], [PCL], [OpEn], [OpenRMF]. - Frameworks for building robotics applications: [ROS], [Dora-RS], [OpenRR], [YARP], [Zenoh], [Copper-rs], [iceoryx]. - Simulation software: dedicated tools like [Gazebo], [Coppelia], [Isaac Sim], plus creative uses of general engines such as [Bevy], [Godot], [MuJoCo]. - DevOps and developer tooling specific to robotics: e.g. visualization, logging, data formats---[webviz], [MCAP]. - Open-source-friendly hardware platforms: [Arduino], [Crazyflie], [Turtlebot]. - Robotic products and applied open-source stacks, including AI/LLM-driven methods for skill acquisition or control: [dora-rs], [ros2ai], [robo-gym], [LeRobot]. These examples are illustrative, not limiting. You can present improvements to any listed project, novel uses, emerging alternatives at any maturity level, or something entirely different. If in doubt---submit! ## Key Dates - 1st of December: Proposals submission deadline - 15th December: Announcement of selected talks - 31st January: Robotics and Simulation devroom at FOSDEM, you must be available onsite (in Brussels, Belgium) to present your talk. ## Talk formats - Full length talk: 40 mins + 5 mins for Q&A - Mid length talk: 20mins + 5 mins for Q&A - Lightning talks: 10 mins OR 5 mins - Demos: TBD ## Submission process Please [submit your proposals](https://fosdem.org/submit) before the end of 2025-12-01. If you already have an account from a previous year, you should reuse it so all recorded FOSDEM contributions are associated with your profile. When submitting your proposal, select 'Robotics and Simulation' from the track drop-down menu and specify the length and format of the talk. ## Requirements The conference language is English. By participating in the event, you agree to the publication of your recordings, slides and other content provided under the Creative Commons Attribution ([CC-BY]) license. By participating in FOSDEM, you are required to adhere to the [FOSDEM Code of Conduct]. ## New to FOSDEM? Quick Primer - What: FOSDEM is a free (no registration fee) community-driven conference about Free and Open Source Software, held annually in Brussels. - Cost: Attendance is free; you cover your own travel, food, and accommodation. Hotels fill fast --- book early. - Format: Parallel devrooms, main tracks, lightning talks, stands, and lots of hallway conversations. - Getting Around: Venue is walkable; expect busy corridors. Pack a reusable water bottle and label your laptop. If this is your first FOSDEM talk, that's fine --- great ideas matter more than prior speaking experience! ## Devroom Committee - Arnaud Taffanel (Bitcraze) - Fred Gurr (Eclipse Foundation) - Lucas Chiesa (Ekumen) - Kimberly McGuire (Robotics Freelancer) - Mat Sadowski (Weekly Robotics) [Cartographer]: https://google-cartographer.readthedocs.io [OMPL]: https://ompl.kavrakilab.org [grid_map]: https://github.com/ANYbotics/grid_map [Octomap]: https://octomap.github.io [PCL]: https://pointclouds.org [OpEn]: https://alphaville.github.io/optimization-engine/ [OpenRMF]: https://www.open-rmf.org [ROS]: https://ros.org/ [Dora-RS]: https://dora-rs.ai [OpenRR]: https://github.com/openrr/openrr [YARP]: https://www.yarp.it/latest/ [Zenoh]: https://zenoh.io/ [Copper-rs]: https://github.com/copper-project/copper-rs [iceoryx]: https://iceoryx.io/ [Gazebo]: https://gazebosim.org/home [Coppelia]: https://manual.coppeliarobotics.com/ [Isaac Sim]: https://github.com/isaac-sim/IsaacSim [Bevy]: https://bevyengine.org/ [Godot]: https://godotengine.org/ [MuJoCo]: https://github.com/google-deepmind/mujoco [webviz]: https://webviz.io [MCAP]: https://mcap.dev [Arduino]: https://arduino.cc [Crazyflie]: https://bitcraze.io/products/crazyflie-2-1-plus/ [Turtlebot]: https://www.turtlebot.com [ros2ai]: https://github.com/fujitatomoya/ros2ai [robo-gym]: https://www.robogym.net [LeRobot]: https://huggingface.co/docs/lerobot/ [CC-BY]: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/be/deed.en [FOSDEM Code of Conduct]: https://fosdem.org/2026/practical/conduct/
