FOSDEM'15 Distributions Devroom Call for Participation
by Andreas Thienemann 22 Oct '14

22 Oct '14

FOSDEM 2015 - Distribution Devroom Call for Participation ++ Please do feel free to forward this CfP to anyone who you do think might be able to contribute to the distributions devroom ++ FOSDEM (Free and Open Source Software Developers' European Meeting) is a free two-day conference at the Université Libre the Bruxelles, in Brussels, Belgium. FOSDEM in 2015 will be held on 31 Jan & 1 Feb 2015, and the distribution devroom will be held once again this year, on both Saturday and Sunday in room H.1302 (Depage). The role of Linux distributions is changing. We are seeing more standardization between distributions due to the adoption of central tools such as systemd. Device- and task-specific distributions like Raspbmc are finding traction in people's houses to run everyday things. Embedded systems are becoming standardized enough that formerly PC-centric distributions like Fedora are able to be installed on ARM machines through their regular installer. Cloud specific distributions, for instance CoreOS, are opening new venues for distributions to offer the building blocks for massive Linux deployments on virtualized infrastructure. On the other hand, there are voices claiming that distributions are not providing for all the needs people have. Packaging is said to be hard. The belief is that there are too many hurdles to jump over which results in software lagging behind or not offering the best upstream user experience. Some users are voicing concerns that their use-cases are not considered. The purpose of the distributions devroom is to offer a forum for all people interested in distribution issues to meet and collaborate on improving the distribution ecosystem. What are the upcoming challenges facing the distribution space? How can distribution maintainers collaborate better to solve cross-distribution issues? What are interesting developments helping distribution developers to excel in the distribution space? For this purpose we invite submissions of talks, panel sessions, round-table discussions, Birds of a Feather (BoF) sessions or lighting talks related to distribution specific issues. Talks should be between 30 to 55 min in length including time for any questions the audience might have. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you require a longer or a shorter slot. To submit your talk to FOSDEM 2015 please visit the following URL: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM15 If you already have a Pentabarf account, please *do not* recreate a new one. If you previously spoke at FOSDEM, chances are you already have an account. If you forgot your password, do just reset it. If not, follow the instructions to create an account. If you encounter any problems with the Pentabarf submission system, please do contact us via mail to distributions-devroom(a)lists.fosdem.org and we will help you. After your Pentabarf account has been created, please click on the "create event" item in the menu to load the submission form. Then click on the "Show All" tab in the top right corner of the browser window. (All the way to the right on a large screen!) Please do submit the following information: * A title and subtitle of your talk. (Please be as descriptive as possible as the schedule will only show the talk's title in the main overview.) * Select "Distributions devroom" as the track. (Important: We cannot see any other tracks, so talks submitted for the wrong track will possibly be lost) * A short abstract of one paragraph. * A longer description explaining the topic, mentioning who the talk is directed at and how audience members will benefit by attending, e.g. what they will learn. * Any Links to related websites/blogs etc. Submissions should be received before Sunday, 7 December 2014 at 23:59:59 UTC. Acceptance mails will be sent out on the 15th of December 2014. Should you have any questions or comments you can contact the devroom organizers at distributions-devroom(a)lists.fosdem.org. Cheers, Andreas Thienemann on behalf of the Distribution Dev Room Program Committee Andreas Thienemann, Christoph Wickert, Jim Perrin, Rikki Endsley and Robyn Bergeron

21 Oct '14

Hi this is a call for the Mozilla Devroom, One more year FOSDEM is coming. The biggest FLOSS event in Europe will be held as usual at Brussels on January 31st to February 2nd. Mozilla has presence since 2003, and this year we will have a Mozilla Room again. This is a call to propose your talks for FOSDEM. This year we have some conditions to apply in order to be more consistent with the Mozilla goals for 2015. If you are shy, or don't feel like you want to talk in public, we will open a call for volunteers later. We will have our devroom only one day, so please note that we cannot assure that your talk will be selected due to agenda constrains. The topics that we want to cover are: - Firefox Hello - New developer tools - Privacy tools - Firefox Accounts - Firefox OS However, we will accept any other topic, but ideally these are the suggested topics for this next edition. If you feel that you are not able to talk in public, or too shy, you can suggest topics/talks for the Mozilla devroom, only put some details in the etherpad: https://remo.etherpad.mozilla.org/FOSDEM2015 so speakers can also find some inspiration for their talks. *Important Information* Duration of the talks: 30 minutes including QA Deadline: December 1st. Acceptance notifications: December 15th. Presentations will be recorded and streamed, so sending your proposal it will imply that you accept and give permission for this. Note that recording will be published under the same license as all FOSDEM content (cc-by), however, exceptions could be requested. To submit your proposal, visit : https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM15 If you have previously send a proposal for FOSDEM, you should probably have a pentabarf account. So we kindly suggest you to not create a new one. If you forgot your password, please reset it. If this is your first time using pentabarf, create an account. After you have your account configured (you will receive a confirmation email), create the event, and click on "Show all" in the top right corner to diplay the full form. When submitting your talk in pentabarf, make sure to select "Mozilla devroom" as track, and include the following information: * The title and subtitle of your talk * A short abstract of one paragraph * A longer description if you wish to do so * Links to related websites/blogs etc Regards, -- Francisco Picolini Community Events Manager @mozilla

Embedded devroom -- call for proposals
by Jeremiah Foster 21 Oct '14

Call For Participation (CFP) Embedded devroom FOSDEM 2015 Devroom date: Saturday January 31st and February 1st 2015 in Brussels, Belgium CFP deadline: Monday December 1st 2014 Final notification two weeks later, December 15th 2014 CFP Introduction ---------------------- Embedded software is transforming the world, and FOSS embedded software is leading the way. From automotive to the Internet of Things, small devices, embedded systems, industrial process control and automatons are beginning their inevitable rise to the singularity. Join in! Or be assimilated. ;) NB: This year FOSDEM plans to record all presentations, no exceptions. Please only propose a talk that you're really able and willing to share. Topics Sought ------------------ The embedded devroom seeks topics related to automotive, mobile, autonomous, and generally small systems. Related areas are of course of interest as well and our definition of "embedded" is elastic. Are you controlling and launching rockets, made your own set-top box, built some heating control for your house, hacked your mobile phone or just built a small gadget using FOSS software then you might have exactly what we're looking for. This year the automotive devroom has been merged into the embedded devroom so automotive projects are for sure on topic here too. CFP Schedule And Submission Details ---------------------------------------------------- Please submit proposals no later than the first of December. Please use the following URL to submit your talk to FOSDEM 2015: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM15 and follow the following rules: * Select as the Track "embedded devroom". * Include a title. (Note that "Subtitle" entry doesn't appear on all conference documents, so make sure "Title" can stand on its own without "Subtitle" present.) Also try to make it catchy and descriptive of what you will talk about. For example "Launching rockets with an Arduino" and not "Programming a microcontroller for aerodynamic control" * Include an Abstract of about 500 characters and a full description of any length you wish, but in both fields, please be concise, but clear and descriptive. * Indicate whether you seek a 25 or 45 minute slot. * Use the "Links" sub-area to your past work in the field you'd like to share. * Affirmative confirmation that you agree to CC-By-SA-4.0 or Cc-By-4.0 licensing of your talk, in the "Submission Notes" field. Add a statement such as this: "Should my presentation be scheduled for FOSDEM 2015, I hereby agree to license all recordings, slides and any other materials presented under the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 4.0 International license. Sincerely, s/YOUR_NAME/" * Also in the notes field, note your affirmative confirmation of availability to speak on Saturday 31 January or 1 February 2015 in Brussels. Also mention if you plan to do a demo and if you have special requirements. * Make sure you give a valid email so we can contact you easily in case we have more questions or want to make sure you received the confirmation. Should you have any questions we can send more information as needed. Thank you very much and we look forward to reviewing your proposals! -- Philippe and Jeremiah along with the other members of the FOSDEM embedded devroom team.

Internet of Things Devroom - call for proposals
by Pieter Hintjens 21 Oct '14

21 Oct '14

More on http://iot-devroom.wikidot.com/blog:2 On February 1st 2015, we're organizing the second [http://fosdem.org FOSDEM] devroom for the Internet of Things. We're now calling for proposals. Do you have an interesting project you'd like to present to 5,000+ free and open source developers? ++ Introduction FOSDEM (Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting) is a non-commercial, volunteer organized European event centered around free and open source software development. It is aimed at developers and anyone interested in the free and open source software movement. It aims to enable developers to meet and to promote the awareness and use of free and open source software. For general news and discussion on FOSDEM, please sign-up to the fosdem(a)lists.fosdem.org mailing list at: https://lists.fosdem.org/listinfo. For specific news and discussion on the IoT Devroom, please sign-up at: https://lists.fosdem.org/listinfo/iot-devroom. FOSDEM is held annually during the first weekend of February at the Université Libre de Bruxelles Solbosch campus, situated in the southeast of Brussels, Belgium and easily reachable by public transport from Brussels-Central railway station. The FOSDEM devrooms are whole-day tracks focused on one topic, aimed at developers. For the the first time, we're organizing an Internet of Things devroom at FOSDEM. As Helen Duce said, "//We have a clear vision: to create a world where every object -- from jumbo jets to sewing needles -- is linked to the Internet.//" Thousands of keen developers come to FOSDEM. There's no better event in Europe for reaching out to free and open source developers. ++ How to Submit a Proposal If you have a IoT project you'd like to present, please submit it via [https://penta.fosdem.org/submission FOSDEM's Pentabarf] web tool. You will create an account (if you don't have one from a previous year), and select the "Internet of Things devroom" as the track. We'll discuss and select talks on [https://lists.fosdem.org/listinfo/iot-devroom the iot-devroom mailing list]. If you want to join in the review process, please just join that group. The organizers will take the final decision on talks where there is no consensus. We're looking for talks that cover one or more of the following topics: * FOSS solutions for machine-to-machine communication on small embedded devices. * Distributed FOSS applications in any field of interest for autonomous/self-controlled devices, (e.g. domotics, automotive, etc. * Presentation of embedded devices with one or more possibilities to join a network. * Infrastructure related (TCP/IP, mesh networking, message queuing, cross-layer solutions). * Real-life problematics and their solution (Cost of maintenance, power management, reachability). * Interoperability solutions for heterogeneous applications, devices, protocols, media. All presentations must be fully FOSS, and related to software development. The devroom will last one day, with a welcome at 9:45, and talks from 10:00 to 17:00. Talks will last 25 minutes each, starting on the hour, with a 5-minute break between talks. The format we recommend for talks is a ten minute demo, followed by five minutes of explanation, and then ten minutes for Q&A with the audience. All talks are recorded and streamed live, and by submitting a talk you agree to this. We want to make this devroom as interesting and diverse as possible, which means we will favor talks that contrast each other. The deadline for submissions is December 1st. If you submit late, your talk may still be considered but will have to be exceptionally interesting. The program will be finalized by December 30th. We will try to keep a slot open at the end of the day for open ended discussion and unscheduled talks.

Software Defined Radio Track -- Call for Participation
by Martin Braun 20 Oct '14

20 Oct '14

Dear friends and colleagues, next year's FOSDEM (the free and open source developer's meeting in Brussels, Europe) will, once again, feature a track on Software Defined Radio. Therefore, we invite developers and users from the free software radio community to join us for this track and present your talks or demos. Software Radio has become an important tool to allow anyone access the EM spectrum. Using free software radio libraries and applications and cheap hardware, anyone can now start hacking on wireless communications, remote sensing, radar or other applications. At FOSDEM, we hope to network all these projects and improve collaboration, bring new ideas forward and get more people involved. The track's web site resides at: http://gnuradio.org/redmine/projects/gnuradio/wiki/FOSDEM15 Here, we will publish updates and the final schedule. ** Submit your presentations To suggest a talk, go to https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM15 and follow the instructions. You need to create an 'Event'; make sure it's in the Software Defined Radio track! Lengths aren't fixed, but give a realistic estimate and please don't exceed 30 minutes unless you have something special planned (in that case, contact one of us). Also, don't forget to include time for Q&A. Typical slot lengths would be 30 Minutes including QA. You aren't limited to slide presentations, of course. Be creative. However, FOSDEM is an open source conference, therefore we ask you to stay clear of marketing presentations. Of course, we like nitty-gritty technical stuff. We will reserve time for interactiveness, it won't all be talks. ** Important Dates FOSDEM is January 31st & February 1st 2015. - December 1st 2014: Submission Deadline - December 19th 2014: Speaker Notification - January 7th 2015: Announcement of final schedule - February 1st 2015: SDR Track ** Steering Committee The track committee consists of: * Philipp Balister (OpenEmbedded / OpenSDR) * Martin Braun (GNU Radio) * Sylvain Munaut (OsmoCom) Hope to hear from you soon! Martin

CFP: Open Source Search Dev Room
by Leslie Hawthorn 17 Oct '14

17 Oct '14

***Please forward this CFP to anyone who may be interested in participating.*** Search has evolved to be much more than simply full-text search. We now rely on “search engines” for a wide variety of functionality: search as navigation, search as analytics and backend for data visualization and sometimes, dare we say it, as a data store. The purpose of this dev room is to explore the new world of open source search engines: their enhanced functionality, new use cases, feature and architectural deep dives, and the position of search in relation to the wider set of software tools. We welcome proposals from folks working with or on open source search engines (e.g. Apache Lucene, Apache Solr, Elasticsearch, Seeks, Sphinx, etc.) or technologies that heavily depend upon search (e.g. NoSQL databases, Nutch, Apache Hadoop). We are particularly interested in presentations on search algorithms, machine learning, real-world implementation/deployment stories and explorations of the future of search. Talks should be 30-60 minutes in length, including time for Q&A. You can submit your talks to us here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/11yLMj9ZlRD1EMU3Knp5y6eO3H5BRK7V38G0OxSfp84… Our Call for Papers will close at 23:59 CEST on Monday, December 1, 2014. We cannot guarantee we will have the opportunity to review submissions made after the deadline, so please submit early (and often)! Should you have any questions, you can contact the Dev Room organizers: opensourcesearch-devroom(a)lists.fosdem.org Cheers, LH on behalf of the Open Source Search Dev Room Program Committee* * Boaz Leskes, Isabel Drost-Fromm, Leslie Hawthorn, Ted Dunning, Torsten Curdt, Uwe Schindler -- Leslie Hawthorn Work Email: leslie.hawthorn(a)elasticsearch.com http://hawthornlandings.org http://identi.ca/lh http://twitter.com/lhawthorn
