Internet of Things devroom CFP
by Maxime Vincent 24 Oct '17

24 Oct '17

Greetings everyone, Hereby I am announcing the Internet of Things devroom CFP. The CFP can be found here as well: https://github.com/maximevince/IoT-devroom-fosdem FOSDEM Internet of Things devroom In February 2018, we're organizing the fifth FOSDEM devroom for the Internet of Things. We're now calling for proposals. Do you have an interesting project you'd like to present to more than 5,000 free and open source developers? Introduction FOSDEM (Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting) is a non-commercial, volunteer organized European event centered around free and open source software development. It is aimed at developers and anyone interested in the free and open source software movement. It aims to enable developers to meet and to promote the awareness and use of free and open source software. For general news and discussion on FOSDEM, please sign-up to the fosdem(a)lists.fosdem.org mailing list at: https://lists.fosdem.org/listinfo. FOSDEM is held annually during the first weekend of February at the Université Libre de Bruxelles Solbosch campus, situated in the southeast of Brussels, Belgium and easily reachable by public transport from Brussels-Central railway station. The FOSDEM devrooms are whole-day tracks focused on one topic, aimed at developers. For the the third time, we're organizing an Internet of Things devroom at FOSDEM. As Helen Duce said, "We have a clear vision: to create a world where every object — from jumbo jets to sewing needles — is linked to the Internet." Thousands of keen developers come to FOSDEM. There's no better event in Europe for reaching out to free and open source developers. Date The IoT devroom will be on Sunday 4th February, 2018. How to Submit a Proposal If you have an IoT project you'd like to present, please submit it via FOSDEM's Pentabarf web tool. You will create an account (if you don't have one from a previous year), and select the "Internet of Things devroom" as the track. Every submission received will be reviewed and we’ll then make a selection from all the submitted proposals. We're looking for talks that cover one or more of the following topics: FOSS solutions for machine-to-machine communication on small embedded devices. Distributed FOSS applications in any field of interest for autonomous/self-controlled devices, (e.g. domotics, automotive, etc. Presentation of embedded devices with one or more possibilities to join a network. Infrastructure related (TCP/IP, mesh networking, message queuing, cross-layer solutions). Real-life problematics and their solution (Cost of maintenance, power management, reachability). Interoperability solutions for heterogeneous applications, devices, protocols, media. All presentations must be fully FOSS, and related to software development. The devroom will last one day, approx from 10.30 until 18:00. Talks will last 25 minutes each, starting on the hour, with a 5-minute break between talks. There will be no break for lunch. Speakers should respect the following talk format: a five to ten minute demo (live demo preferred over pre-recorded), followed by five to ten minutes of explanation, and then five minutes for Q&A with the audience. Make sure you stick to your 25 minute time slot. All talks are recorded and streamed live, and by submitting a talk you agree to this. We want to make this devroom as interesting and diverse as possible, which means we will favor talks that contrast each other. The deadline for submissions is December 1st. If you submit late, your talk may still be considered but will have to be exceptionally interesting. The program will be finalized by December 30th.

----- Forwarded message from Dave Neary <dneary(a)redhat.com> ----- Date: Mon, 16 Oct 2017 16:52:54 -0400 From: Dave Neary <dneary(a)redhat.com> Subject: [devroom-managers] Call for Content for the SDN & NFV DevRoom 2018 Hi everyone, We are pleased to announce the Call for Participation in the FOSDEM 2018 Software Defined Networking and Network Functions Virtualization DevRoom! Important dates: * Nov 16: Deadline for submissions * Dec 1: Speakers notified of acceptance * Dec 5: Schedule published This year, as it has for the past two years, the DevRoom topics will cover two distinct fields: * Software Defined Networking (SDN), covering virtual switching, open source SDN controllers, virtual routing * Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), covering open source network functions, NFV management and orchestration tools, and topics related to the creation of an open source NFV platform We are now inviting proposals for talks about Free/Libre/Open Source Software on the topics of SDN and NFV. This is an exciting and growing field, and FOSDEM gives an opportunity to reach a unique audience of very knowledgeable and highly technical free and open source software activists. This year, the DevRoom will focus on the emergence of cloud native Virtual Network Functions, and the management and performance requirements of those applications, in addition to our traditional focus on high performance packet processing. A representative, but not exhaustive, list of the projects and topics we would like to see on the schedule are: * Low-level networking and switching: IOvisor, eBPF, XDP, fd.io, Open vSwitch, OpenDataplane, Free Range Routing, ... * SDN controllers and overlay networking: OpenStack Neutron, Calico, OpenDaylight, ONOS, Plumgrid, OVN, OpenContrail, Midonet, ... * NFV Management and Orchestration: ONAP, ManageIQ, Juju, OpenBaton, Tacker, OSM, network management, PNDA.io, ... * NFV related features: Service Assurance, enforcement of Quality of Service, Service Function Chaining, fault management, dataplane acceleration, security, ... Talks should be aimed at a technical audience, but should not assume that attendees are already familiar with your project or how it solves a general problem. Talk proposals can be very specific solutions to a problem, or can be higher level project overviews for lesser known projects. Please include the following information when submitting a proposal: Your name The title of your talk (please be descriptive, as titles will be listed with around 250 from other projects) Short abstract of one or two paragraphs Short bio (with photo) The deadline for submissions is November 16th 2017. FOSDEM will be held on the weekend of February 3-4, 2018 and the SDN/NFV DevRoom will take place on Saturday, February 3, 2017. Please use the following website to submit your proposals: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM18 (you do not need to create a new Pentabarf account if you already have one from past years). You can also join the devroom???s mailing list, which is the official communication channel for the DevRoom: network-devroom(a)lists.fosdem.org (subscription page: https://lists.fosdem.org/listinfo/network-devroom) ??? This devroom is an evolution of the EDA devroom we organised in 2015, 2016 and 2017. The submission process ---------------------- Please submit your proposals at https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM18 before 1 December 2017. If you already have a Pentabarf account (for example as a result of having submitted a proposal in the past), make sure you use it to log in and submit your proposal. Do not create a new account if you already have one. Please provide a bit of information about yourself under Person -> Description -> Abstract. When you submit your proposal (creating an "Event" in Pentabarf), make sure you choose the "CAD and Open Hardware Devroom" in the track drop-down menu. Otherwise your proposal might go unnoticed. Fill in at least a title and abstract for the proposed talk and a suggested duration. Bear in mind that a lot of the value in these meetings comes from the discussions, so please be reasonable regarding the duration of the talk. Important dates --------------- 1 December 2017: deadline for submission of proposals 8 December 2017: announcement of final schedule 3 February 2018: devroom day Recordings ---------- The FOSDEM organisers hope to be able to live-stream and record all the talks. The recordings will be published under the same licence as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY). Only presentations will be recorded, not informal discussions and whatever happens during the lunch break. By agreeing to present at FOSDEM, you automatically give permission to be recorded. The organisers will agree to make exceptions but only for exceptional and well-reasoned cases. Mailing list ------------ Feel free to subscribe to the mailing list of the CAD and Open Hardware devroom to submit ideas, ask questions and generally discuss about the event: https://lists.fosdem.org/listinfo/open-hardware-devroom Spread the word! ---------------- This is the first CAD and Open Hardware devroom at FOSDEM, after three EDA-only devrooms which were very well received. Let's make sure as many projects and developers as possible are present. Thanks!

by R. Tyler Croy 17 Oct '17

17 Oct '17

(pardon my markdown, this can also be viewed: https://github.com/fosdem-testingautomation/fosdem-testingautomation.github…) 2018 will be the sixth year for the Testing/Automation dev room at [FOSDEM](https://fosdem.org/2016). This room is about creating better software through a focus on testing and automation at all layers of the stack. From creating libraries and end-user applications all the way down to packaging, distribution and deployment. Testing and automation is not isolated to a single toolchain, language or platform, there is much to learn and share regardless of background! # What Since this is the sixth year we're hosting the Testing and Automation dev room, here are some ideas of what we would like to see, and what worked in prior years, they're just ideas though! Check out the [2013](https://archive.fosdem.org/2013/schedule/track/testing_and_automation…, [2014](https://archive.fosdem.org/2014/schedule/track/testing_and_automation…, [2015](https://archive.fosdem.org/2015/schedule/track/testing_and_automation…, [2016](https://archive.fosdem.org/2016/schedule/track/testing_and_automation…, [2017](https://archive.fosdem.org/2017/schedule/track/testing_and_automation… schedules for inspiration. ### Testing in the real, open source world * War stories/strategies for testing large scale or complex projects * Tools that extend the ability to test low-level code * Projects that are introducing new/interesting ways of testing "systems" ### Cool Tools (good candidates for lightning talks) * Explain/demo how your open source tool made developing quality software better * Combining projects/plugins/tools to build amazing things "Not enough people in the open source community know how to use $X, but here's a tutorial on how to use $X to make your project better." # Where FOSDEM is hosted at [Universite libre de Bruxelles in Brussels, Belgium](https://fosdem.org/2018/practical/transportation/). The Testing and Automation dev room is likely slated for Building H, room 2213, which seats ~100. # When * CFP Submission Deadline: **23:59 UTC, 26 November 2017** * Schedule Announced: **15 December 2017** * Presentations: **3 February 2018** # How Please submit one (or more) 30-40 minute talk proposal(s) OR one (or more) 10 minute lightning talk proposal(s) by **23:59 UTC on November 26th 2017**. We will notify all those submitting proposals about their acceptance by December 15th 2017. To submit a talk proposal (you can submit multiple proposals if you'd like) with [Pentabarf](https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM18/), the FOSDEM paper submission system.
