by Saúl Ibarra Corretgé 15 Dec '20

15 Dec '20

# FOSDEM - Real Time Communications devroom CfP ## Overview [FOSDEM] is one of the world's premier meetings of free software developers, with over five thousand people attending each year. FOSDEM 2021 takes place 6-7 February 2021 and for the very first time, it will be online. This document contains information about: - Real-Time Communications developer room (devroom) - speaking opportunities - volunteering ## New rules for the online edition This year FOSDEM will be fully online instead of being held in Brussels, here are the most important things to know about this (quite significant) change: - The reference time will be Brussels local time (CET) - Talks will be pre-recorded in advance, and streamed during the event - The Q/A session will be live - A facility will be provided for people watching to chat between themselves - A facility will be provided for people watching to submit questions ## Call for participation - Real Time Communications (RTC) The Real-Time devroom is about all things involving real-time communication, including: XMPP, SIP, WebRTC, telephony, mobile VoIP, codecs, peer-to-peer, privacy and encryption. **We are looking for speakers for the devroom and volunteers who can help manage the scheduling and live Q&A sessions.** The devroom is only on Saturday, 6th of February 2021. To discuss the devroom, volunteer or ask questions, please join the [Free-RTC mailing list]. ### Key dates - 20th Dec: Submission deadline - 24th Dec: Announcement of selected talks - 15th Jan: Presentations upload deadline - 6th & 7th Feb: Conference dates (online) - 6th Feb: RTC devroom date (online) ### Speaking opportunities Note: if you used FOSDEM Pentabarf before, please use the same account/username Real-Time Communications devroom: deadline 23:59 UTC on 20th of December. Please use the [Pentabarf] system to submit a talk proposal for the devroom. On the "General" tab, please look for the "Track" option and choose "Real Time Communications devroom". ### First-time speaking? FOSDEM devrooms are a welcoming environment for people who have never given a talk before. Please feel free to contact the devroom administrators personally if you would like to ask any questions about it. This year this is more true than ever, being able to record your presentation offline without an audience in front can greatly help build up one's confidence! ### Submission guidelines The Pentabarf system will ask for many of the essential details. Please remember to re-use your account from previous years if you have one. In the "Submission notes", please tell us about: - The purpose of your talk - Any other talk applications (devrooms, lightning talks, main track) - Availability constraints and special needs You can use HTML and links in your bio, abstract and description. If you maintain a blog, please consider providing us with the URL of a feed with posts tagged for your RTC-related work. We will be looking for relevance to the conference and devroom themes, presentations aimed at developers of free and open source software about RTC-related topics. Please feel free to suggest a duration between 20 minutes and 55 minutes but note that the final decision on talk durations will be made by the devroom administrators based on the number of received proposals. As the two previous devrooms have been combined into one, we may decide to give shorter slots than in previous years so that more speakers can participate. Please note FOSDEM aims to record and live-stream all talks. The CC-BY license is used. ### Recording help The devroom organization is able to provide help with recording your session. The recording would be performed at a scheduled time with one of us, so you won't be alone giving your presentation. Minimal edits will be possible, but the ideal plan is to record it in one shot. Thanks Dan Jenkins for providing us with the means to do this! ## Volunteers needed To make the devroom run successfully, we are looking for volunteers. This year many things be done for the first time, so all the help we can get is more than welcome. ## Spread the word and discuss If you know of any mailing lists where this CfP would be relevant, please forward this document. If this devroom excites you, please blog or microblog about it, especially if you are submitting a talk. If you regularly blog about RTC topics, please send details about your blog to the planet site administrators: - All projects https://planet.freertc.org planet(a)freertc.org - XMPP https://planet.jabber.org ralphm(a)ik.nu - SIP https://planet.sip5060.net planet(a)sip5060.net Please also link to the Planet sites from your own blog or web site as this helps everybody in the free real-time communications community. ## Contact For any private queries, contact us directly using the address **fosdem-rtc-admin(a)freertc.org** and for any other queries please ask on the [Free-RTC mailing list]. The devroom administration team: - Saúl Ibarra Corretgé <s(a)saghul.net> - Ralph Meijer <ralphm(a)ik.nu> - Daniel-Constantin Mierla <miconda(a)gmail.com> - Daniel Pocock <daniel(a)pocock.pro> - Guus der Kinderen <guus.der.kinderen(a)gmail.com> [FOSDEM]: https://fosdem.org [Free-RTC mailing list]: http://lists.freertc.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss [Pentabarf]: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM21/ -- Saúl

Go Devroom CfP — FOSDEM 2021
by Maartje Eyskens 14 Dec '20

14 Dec '20

Hi gophers, The Go community has been represented at FOSDEM every year since 2014, while 2021 will be a weird edition we will still be there! This year again the Go devroom will be online on Saturday February 6th 2021 and we are now looking for speakers. The format will be 22 minutes talk with 5 minutes for Q&A at the end. This year will be a little different than previous editions. All talks will be presented online either pre-recorded or live (which one you prefer to give is up to you! We do however require a backup video to be uploaded). During the talks we will have an online Q&A and chatroom moderated by our friendly volunteers helping to provide a fun online experience. This is a great opportunity for new speakers, and we will have people helping you craft your talk and slides if so you wish. So if you, or someone you know, are working on something cool that might be good on a virtual stage, submit a proposal! Do you want to be one of our speakers? Please submit your proposal using [pentabarf](https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM21). The deadline for submission is December 27th 2021 (23:59 UTC). If you are selected we would like to have the (backup) video uploaded by January 31st 2021. Should you need any help using pentabarf check out our [“Guide to Pentabarf”](https://eyskens.me/beginners-guide-to-pentabarf/). If you want us to check whether your proposal came through correctly, you can always contact us at [go-devroom-manager@fosdem.org](mailto:go-devroom-manager@fosdem.org). Do you want to help organize the devroom? We need people to help with the Q&A and chat moderation. We are also especially looking for many people to help with reviewing the proposals and help with video review/mentoring. Please send us an email to [go-devroom-manager@fosdem.org](mailto:go-devroom-manager@fosdem.org) if you’d like to help out with this. Any topics related to Go are welcome, with a preference for open source projects rather than product pitches. We value talks about how a given project uses Go rather than how a project written in Go is used. The room will follow Go’s [Code of Conduct](https://golang.org/conduct). Cheers, Maartje Eyskens Francesc Campoy

Stands - Call for Participation
by Pieter De Praetere 13 Dec '20

13 Dec '20

Hello, There can be no February without FOSDEM, and there can not be a FOSDEM without stands. We are currently inviting proposals for a stand at the virtual event taking place the 6th and 7th of February 2021. Stands allow projects to showcase their work to interested visitors, answer their questions, and in normal years, hand out swag to support their project. For obvious reasons, unfortunately we will be unable to run a physical conference in Brussels this year, but we would still like to give communities a place to meet online. We offer you: 1. A position on a special stands website (active during the event) for you to introduce your project. We will organise the stands per theme. 2. Hosting for a webpage and several short videos where you can introduce and demonstrate your project and show people the latest features, discuss your roadmap etc. 3. A chatroom facility to allow visitors to interact with you. (Details will be confirmed closer to the event.) Proposals should be submitted through the form at stands.fosdem.org/submission <https://stands.fosdem.org/submission> which contains further information. Questions or remarks? Contact us at stands(a)fosdem.org <mailto:stands@fosdem.org>. The deadline is the *25th of December*. The FOSDEM Stands Team

Re: [FOSDEM] [devroom-managers] Calls for Papers
by Nicolas Cuervo Benavides 11 Dec '20

11 Dec '20

Hello Alasdair, The Free Software Radio Devroom CfP was sent to the list on December 5th, and we see it in the archive https://lists.fosdem.org/pipermail/fosdem/2020q4/date.html, but it hasn't been added yet to https://fosdem.org/2021/schedule/tracks/. Could you please add it there? You'll find the text below again. Here's also our link: https://wiki.gnuradio.org/index.php/FOSDEM_2021 Thanks! Nico -------- Dear friends and fans of software-defined radio and free/open-source radio topics in general, FOSDEM 2021 (the free and open-source developer's meeting usually in Brussels, Europe but **this time virtually**) will again feature a track on Software Defined Radio and any other radio-related topics in the Free Software Radio devroom. Therefore, we invite developers and users from the free software radio community to join us for this track and present your talks or demos. Given the current circumstances and the virtual nature of this event in 2021, we are asking the presenters to pre-record the talks, which will then be gathered by us and streamed during the event. Presenters are also asked to be present online during their timeslot for live Q&A. Software Radio has become an important tool to allow anyone to access the EM spectrum. Using free software radio libraries and applications and cheap hardware, anyone can now start hacking on wireless communications, remote sensing, radar, fun hacks of all sorts, or other applications. At FOSDEM, we hope to network all these projects, and improve collaboration, bring new ideas forward and get more people involved. The track's website resides at the link below. The final schedule will be available through Pentabarf and the official FOSDEM website. Notice that the reference time will be Brussels local time (CET). https://fosdem.org/2021/schedule/track/free_software_radio/ Additional Information will be also available at: https://wiki.gnuradio.org/index.php/FOSDEM_2021 ** Submit your presentations To suggest a talk, go to https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM21 and follow the instructions (you need an account, but can use your account from last year if you have one. Please do NOT create a new account if you already have one). You need to create an 'Event'; make sure it's in the Free Software Radio track! Your submission should have the following information: * Your contact Email * A descriptive title and subtitle of your talk * A short abstract * Links related to the project * [Optional] A longer description of the content of your talk. Lengths aren't fixed, but give a realistic estimate, and please don't exceed 30 minutes unless you have something special planned (in that case, contact one of us). We will typically go for 30-minute slots -- shorter talks, unless they're really short, usually tend to screw up the schedule too much. You aren't limited to slide presentations, of course. Be creative. However, FOSDEM is an open-source conference, therefore we ask you to stay clear of marketing presentations and present something relevant to free/open software. We like nitty-gritty technical stuff. Topics discussed in this devroom include: * SDR Frameworks + Tools * Cellular/telecoms software * Free/Open SDR hardware * Wireless security * Random fun wireless hacks * SDR in education * Satellite/spacecraft communication * Ham radio related topics ** Important Dates * Submission deadline: 26 December 2020 * Announcement of selected talks: 31 December 2020 * Conference dates 6 & 7 February 2021 online * Free software radio devroom date: Sunday 7 February 2021 online In the last years we were always full to the brim with presentations, so if you want to present, please make sure to submit your abstracts soon! ** Following steps for accepted talks When your talk is accepted, you will be contacted by a deputy who will help you with the pre-recording of your talk. Together you will make sure that the content has the required quality and is stream-ready. When complete, the recording will be located into the streaming system, and Bob's your uncle. Don't forget that you **must** be available during the allocated timeslot of your talk for live Q&A. ** Steering Committee The track committee consists of: * Phil Balister - "Crofton" * Derek Kozel - "dkozel" * Nicolas Cuervo - "primercuervo" * Martin Braun - "mbr0wn" Hope to hear from you soon! And please forward this announcement. - Nicolas On Sat, Dec 5, 2020 at 1:38 AM Alasdair G Kergon <agk(a)fosdem.org> wrote: > Please send the text of these to the public mailing list if you didn't > already: > fosdem(a)lists.fosdem.org > > They'll appear at > https://lists.fosdem.org/pipermail/fosdem/2020q4/date.html > > and we will add links to: > > https://fosdem.org/2021/schedule/tracks/ > > (If you aren't subscribed to the list or the message trips a spam > filter, there'll by a delay waiting for a moderator to approve the > message.) > > We'll issue the main conference CFP this weekend and refer to that page > for devroom CFPs. > > Alasdair > > _______________________________________________ > devroom-managers mailing list > devroom-managers(a)lists.fosdem.org > https://lists.fosdem.org/listinfo/devroom-managers

CfP Safety and Open Source
by Shaun Mooney 10 Dec '20

10 Dec '20

Hi all, Please see the CfP for the Safety and Open Source dev room below. Kind regards, Shaun Mooney --- # FOSDEM 2021 (Online) - Safety and Open Source Call for Participation Submission deadline : 26/12/2020 ## About FOSDEM FOSDEM is a free event for software developers to meet, share ideas and collaborate. * FOSDEM is free to attend. There is no registration. * FOSDEM [website](https://fosdem.org/2021/) * FOSDEM [code of conduct](https://fosdem.org/2021/practical/conduct/) ## New rules / changes since last year For obvious reasons, this year the event will not take place in a physical location but online. * The reference time will be [Brussels local lime (CET).](https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/belgium/brussels) * Talks will be pre-recorded in advance, and streamed during the event * Q/A session will be live * A facility will be provided for people watching to chat between themselves * A facility will be provided for people watching to submit questions ## Key dates * Submission deadline: 26 December 2020 * Announcement of selected talks: 31 December 2020 * Conference dates 6 & 7 February 2021 online * Safety and Open Source devroom date: Saturday 6 February 2021 online ## The Dev Room The Safety and Open Source Software dev room is dedicated to everything relating to using Open Source Software for safety critical applications. The advantages of Free and Open Source Software are numerous. More than ever companies choose to use FOSS in their projects, however the world of safety is behind the curve. Software developed for safety applications typically employs traditional development practices that, although well-used, are increasingly outdated, and the code is often closed source. This is because safety standards are stringent, and it is important that safety applications have rigorous quality assurance practices applied during development. Sadly, this means that using FOSS which has not been developed to a safety standard from the start is extremely difficult. This dev room is looking for talks which can help to showcase how we can use FOSS in safety applications, including overcoming obstacles faced, legal issues for industry and contributors, and how we can advance state-of-the-art safety practices to allow industry to benefit from the many advantages that FOSS provides. ## Talks We recommend about 45 minutes including discussion for talks, although will consider variations (please include the talk length in your submission). Example topics include (but are not limited to): * Pros and cons of using Open Source software in safety * Examples of Open Source Software being used in safety applications today * Legal and moral implications for contributors who have their code used in safety applications * Safety analysis techniques for complex software systems * Requirements elicitation, and verification and validation techniques (including creating argumentation to prove that software is safe enough to use) * What we need to do as FOSS creators to shift the industry mentality around the use of FOSS vs. current safety standards * Open Source Development practices and how we can map these to practices such as the V-model which are needed for current industry safety standards (e.g. IEC 61508, ISO 26262 ect.) ## For accepted talks * Presentations have to be pre-recorded and streamed before the event. * Once your talk is accepted, we will assign you a deputy to help you to produce the pre-recorded content. * The deputy will review the content and ensure it has the required quality. They are also responsible for ensuring that the content is ready to broadcast on the day. * During the stream of your talk, you must be available online for the Q/A session. ## Submit a talk Visit the [FOSDEM 2021 Pentabarf website](https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM21), and if you don't have one already create an account. Create an "event" and click on "Show all" in the top right corner to display the full form. Your submission must include the following information * Your contact Email * The title and subtitle of your talk (please be descriptive, as titles will be listed with ~500 from other projects) * Select "Safety and Open Source" as the track. * A short abstract of one paragraph * A longer description if you wish to do so * Links to related websites / blogs etc. ## Contact If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us: * Shaun Mooney: shaun.mooney(a)codethink.co.uk * Beth White: beth.white(a)codethink.co.uk

Hello all, The date of the submission deadline for recordings was a typo. I have updated the CfP at the wiki link https://libreplanet.org/wiki/FOSDEM2021-devroom-declarative-and-minimalisti… to the 7th of January.
