Call for Participation: Energy Devroom
by Kai Hermann 29 Oct '24

29 Oct '24

Hello everyone, We are excited to announce that for the third time there will be an Energy devroom at FOSDEM: Energy: Accelerating the Transition through Open Source! This dedicated Energy devroom will foster the broad collaboration that is needed to successfully transform global energy systems though open source. Representatives of open source project communities working in the energy space are encouraged to apply to present to the community at FOSDEM by sharing your project, experiences, and thought leadership. ## Call for participation Energy: Accelerating the Transition through Open Source We are seeking presentations related to energy systems and energy usage. Project overview presentations are welcome, however tangible applications and use-cases are preferred, as are stories and lessons for community building in the energy industry. We anticipate topics such as scheduling energy consumption, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, metering and measurement systems, microgrid controls, applications for going off-grid, and more. If you are unsure about what direction to take a topic, please reach out so we can assist you. Talks should be aimed at a technical audience, but should not assume that attendees are already familiar with your project or how it solves a given problem. Talk proposals may cover very specific solutions to a problem, or may be a higher level project overview, particularly for lesser known projects. Recordings of the 2023 and 2024 Energy devroom sessions can be viewed at https://archive.fosdem.org/2023/schedule/track/energy/ and https://archive.fosdem.org/2024/schedule/track/energy/, which may be useful examples for preparing your proposal. Please feel free to suggest a duration between 20 minutes and 55 minutes (making sure to account for time for questions) but note that the final decision on talk durations will be made by the devroom managers based on the number of received proposals. We may decide to schedule shorter slots so that more speakers can participate. ## Key dates * 1st December: CfP submission deadline * 15th December: Announcement of selected talks * 2nd February: Energy devroom at FOSDEM, you must be available onsite to present your talk. All deadlines are at 00:00 UTC+1. ## Submission process Please submit your proposals at https://fosdem.org/submit before the 1st of December 2024, 00:00 (Europe/Brussels UTC+1). If you already have an account from a previous year, you should reuse it so all recorded FOSDEM contributions are associated with your profile. When submitting your proposal, select 'Energy: Accelerating the Transition through Open Source' from the track drop-down menu. Write the desired duration (between 20 minutes and 55 minutes) including question and answer into the proposal so we can take that into account when planning. We may decide to give shorter slots so that more speakers can participate. We will not be accepting proposals from anyone who cannot attend the event in person nor video-recorded talks. If you run into issues with your submission, please reach out to us so we can assist you, or contact the program committee at program(a)fosdem.org. Please note that the submission deadline is managed by the FOSDEM team and not by the devroom managers, meaning that after the expiration of the deadline nothing can be accepted. ## Requirements The conference language is English. All content must relate to Free and Open Source Software. By participating in the event you agree to the publication of your recordings, slides and other content provided under the same licence as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY). By participating in FOSDEM you are required to adhere to the Code of Conduct: https://fosdem.org/2025/practical/conduct/ ## Please consider volunteering Regardless if you submit a talk, please consider volunteering if you plan on attending the devroom. Every small contribution counts, even just half an hour, so if you want to help make our devroom a success, please let us know so we can stay in touch and plan. ## Devroom managers Current Devroom managers are: Kai-Uwe Hermann Boris Dolley Anna-Lina Helsen Dan Brown Rachel Tipton Sebastian Grüner Erwann Roussy Nicolas Höning Nico Rikken You can use the dedicated email address to contact us: energy-devroom-manager(a)fosdem.org Hope to see you at the Energy Devroom!

Declarative and Minimalistic Computing devroom CfP
by Manolis Ragkousis 28 Oct '24

28 Oct '24

We are excited to announce the Call for Participation for the Declarative and Minimalistic Computing devroom at FOSDEM on February, 2025! The submission deadline for talk proposals is 1st of December, 2024. FOSDEM is one of the most important free software conferences and is hosted annually at Université libre de Bruxelles in Brussels, Belgium. This year FOSDEM will be a physical conference. Talks will be done in person. We accept talks from languages that attempt to minimize use of hardware and software while trying to make systems simpler, more robust and more secure. If you are working on improving today's systems taking declarative/minimalistic approaches feel free to submit a talk proposal. Examples include the Scheme/Lisp family of programmings languages. In past editions, this devroom has received presentations from a varied number of language communities, including Forth, Guile, Lua, Nim, Racket, Raku and Tcl as well as several experimental projects that push minimalism in new directions. Minimalism and declarative programming are two important topics for this devroom. Minimalism matters. Minimalism allows for smaller systems that take less resources and consume less energy. More importantly, free and open source minimalism allows for secure systems that are easy to understand. Declarative programming is a programming paradigm that expresses the logic of a computation without describing its control flow. Many languages that apply this style attempt to minimize or eliminate side effects by describing what the program must accomplish in terms of the problem domain, rather than describe how to accomplish it as a sequence of the programming language primitives. Finally, in this year's conference we encourage speakers to honor individuals in computing from a diversity perspective. Individuals who have inspired them and whose work is relevant to their presentations. We want to invite you to submit a talk on declarative and minimalistic computing that fits that description. We are especially happy to receive talk submissions from members of groups underrepresented in free software. If you have something you’d like to share with your fellow developers, please E-mail us! Reach out to pjotr.public456(a)thebird.nl or manolis837(a)gmail.com if you run into any trouble. The deadline for submission is December 1st. Proposals must be submitted on FOSDEM's conference management system: <https://pretalx.fosdem.org/>. All submissions must go through pretalx: <https://fosdem.org/submit> When submitting your talk make doubly sure to select "Declarative and Minimalistic Computing devroom" as track (if you don't we won't find it), and include the following information: * The title and subtitle of your talk * A short abstract of one paragraph * A longer description if you wish to do so * Links to related websites/blogs etc To see what a final talk looks like see https://archive.fosdem.org/2021/schedule/event/gnumes/ Let's make this a fun day! = Organizers = - Pjotr Prins (pjotr.public456(a)thebird.nl) - Manolis Ragkousis (manolis837(a)gmail.com) - Bonface Munyoki (me(a)bonfacemunyoki.com) - Jonathan McHugh (indieterminacy(a)libre.brussels) - Arun Isaac (arunisaac(a)systemreboot.net) - Amirouche Boubekki (amirouche.boubekki(a)gmail.com) - Hisham Muhammad (hisham(a)gobolinux.org) - Ludovic Courtès (ludo(a)gnu.org) - GNU Guile, GNU Guix - Jan Nieuwenhuizen (janneke(a)gnu.org) - GNU Mes project leader - William Byrd (webyrd(a)gmail.com) - Oliver Propst (oliver.propst(a)gmail.com) - Julien Lepiller (julien(a)lepiller.eu) = Code of conduct = - https://fosdem.org/2025/practical/conduct/ = Original proposal = - https://libreplanet.org/wiki/FOSDEM2025-devroom-proposal = Important dates: = - Dec 1st 2024: submission deadline for talk proposals - Dec 15th 2024: announcement of the final schedule - Feb 2nd 2024: FOSDEM! https://libreplanet.org/wiki/FOSDEM2025-devroom-declarative-and-minimalisti…

Cloud Native Databases DevRoom CFP
by Raymond Paik 28 Oct '24

28 Oct '24

We’re excited to announce the new Cloud Native Databases devroom for FOSDEM 2025. The purpose of this devroom is to discuss developing databases that are designed to take advantage of the cloud native architecture in order to meet the demands of modern applications. Over the past decade, there have been many open source communities that developed distributed SQL databases to provide scalability, cost efficiency and manageability in the cloud. However, there is still work to be done for on-going challenges such as network latency and security. Instead of focusing on a single technology or community, our goal is to bring open source database communities and developers together to share their experience, learn from their work, and foster collaboration on challenges ahead. *Suggested Topics* Since this is the first time we’re organizing our devroom, we don’t have examples from past FOSDEM that we can point to. However, here are some suggestions. - Evolution of new database architecture for cloud native environments (e.g., to address scalability, elasticity, reliability) - How to ease/streamline database migration (especially from legacy databases) - Security and compliance for cloud native databases - Cloud cost optimization for users - Achieving database upgrades without downtime - How to benchmark and tune distributed databases - Query optimization for cloud native databases - Tools/methodologies for monitoring, observability, testing, etc. - Working with streaming data - Stories from end-users (both successes and failures) - State of open-source licenses and database communities - Emerging trends/use cases These are just ideas and we encourage you to be creative with your proposals! A few Notes: - You must be available in person to present your talk at FOSDEM. - Speaking slots are 25 minutes in length (including Q&A) with 5 minutes between sessions. - FOSDEM is a FLOSS <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_and_open-source_software> community event, so please ensure your topic is appropriate (i.e., no sales pitches). *Important Dates* - CFP submission deadline: 1 December, 2024 (at ~23:55 Brussels time) - Devroom schedule announced: 15 December, 2024 - Devroom takes place: 1 February, 2025 (in the afternoon) *To Submit* Go to the FOSDEM 2025 Pretalx website <https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2025/cfp> to submit your talks and select “Cloud Native Databases” in the Track dropdown menu. Submissions on Pretalx will be open by 30 October.
