01 Dec '23

Hi, also by some popular demand, we are excited to extend the deadline for submission to the 4th of December (23:59 CET)! Best, Hans-Joerg ---- Forwarded Message ---- Hi all! (For the latest info:https://github.com/modern-email/FOSDEM-24) Email is the workhorse of digital communication. It's one of the oldest decentralized messaging platforms, and we must keep implementations up to date with new standards/techniques/programming languages. The "**Modern Email**" developer room is new at FOSDEM and seeks speakers, volunteers, and participants! We want to get together as email developers/users, learn about each other's projects, have technical discussions, exchange implementation/operational experience, and share plans and visions for the future of email. The Devroom will be **held on Sunday, February 4** in the afternoon, with primarily talks on the schedule. The **submission deadline for talks is December 1st, 2023**. We will also informally meet with email developers on Saturday (that could be you; join us!) * **Speaker**: As a speaker, you're invited to present your work in the developer room. * **Volunteer**: As a volunteer, you would be helping us out during the sessions. * **Participant**: As a participant, whether introverted or extroverted, you are excellent to everyone and make the day! **Please distribute this CfP as widely as possible to interested parties!** ## Topics Some suggestions for talks: * Overview of the current state of email (as a keynote). * Your free/open source software project(s) related to email. From demo to details. * Current developments, upcoming standards, e.g. [JMAP](https://jmap.io), structured data, ... * Efforts to modernize our email ecosystem, e.g., through implementations in modern languages. * Integrating email with other software, e.g., through APIs. * Message/transport security/authenticity. * Experiences with deliverability, email operations, anti-spam, hosting, ... * Related technologies such as calendaring/PIM. * Visionary talks * Where should email be in 10 years? * Can we add end-to-end encryption (to the masses) through, e.g., MLS? * Can we provide simple solutions for on-prem (private) hosting? * ... ## Submission We ask for a short talk abstract (+ proposed duration) and a speaker biography (+ contact info). Any material that shows your affinity to the field is also appreciated, e.g., a collection of links to your work, talks, projects, blog posts, etc. Submissions **must** be made through Pretalx (https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2024/cfp) no later than December 1st. The suggested duration for a talk is **25 minutes** (20 minutes presentation + 5 minutes Q&A). However, we*explicitly* invite you to propose the best duration for your talk. If the best way to present your project is a **5-minute lightning talk**, we'll happily arrange a lightning session! Depending on the proposals, we may contact you to adapt the time of the session to fit the devroom schedule. **Important**: Choose "**Modern Email**" in the track drop-down menu when submitting your proposal. Otherwise, your proposal might go unnoticed! Once the devroom schedule is finalized, we will contact you to help you prepare your talk. ## Recordings Talks and Q&A sessions at FOSDEM will be recorded. The recordings will be published under the same license as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY). By agreeing to present at FOSDEM, you automatically give permission to be recorded. The organizers will agree to make exceptions only for exceptional and well-reasoned cases. ## Important dates * December 4st, 2023: Deadline for submission of proposals * December 15th, 2023: Announcement of final schedule * February 3rd, 2024: FOSDEM Day 1 * February 4th, 2024: FOSDEM Day 2 - "Modern Email" DevRoom day! ## Contact For the latest details, see:https://github.com/modern-email/FOSDEM-24 Join the matrix room:https://matrix.to/#/#modern-email-fosdem-24-cfp:matrix.org Contact the organizers: * Benoit Tellier,btellier(a)linagora.com * Damian Poddebniak,poddebniak(a)mailbox.org * Hans-Jörg Happel,happel(a)audriga.com * Mechiel Lukkien,mechiel(a)ueber.net We are looking forward to a great day at FOSDEM with you! _______________________________________________ devroom-managers mailing list devroom-managers(a)lists.fosdem.org https://lists.fosdem.org/listinfo/devroom-managers

FOSDEM graphics DevRoom CFP
by Luc Verhaegen 19 Nov '23

19 Nov '23

Hi, At FOSDEM on Sunday the 4th of February, there will the 15th Graphics DevRoom. URL: https://fosdem.org/2024/ The talk topics of the graphics devroom encompass: * graphics drivers: display, 2d engines, 3d engines, at bootloader, kernel and userspace levels. * media drivers: camera/capture engines, hardware media encoders and decoders on all levels. * input drivers for bootloaders, kernels and userspace on all levels. * windowing systems (X, wayland, others) and window managers. * graphics toolkits (QT, GTK, others). * 3D and Compute APIs (OpenGL, Vulkan, DirectX, others), and 3d and game engines. * Virtual reality hardware and toolkits. * Artificial Intelligence HW acceleration. * Media encode and decode applications. And the tools needed to help configure and run the above. Like with so many DevRooms, we got a surprise half a day only, so there will have to be 8 slots of 20 minutes (with 5 minutes of setup, and 5 mins of Q&A) on half an hour boundaries. Submission deadline is the 10th of december, but do not count on this date, once the schedule has filled with enough solid talks, we will accept no more. You can submit your talk here: https://fosdem.org/submit FOSDEM has moved away from the clunky but known quantity that was Pentabarf to pretalx. Accounts from Pentabarf are no longer valid, and you will have to create a new account. Please put some time and effort in the title and at least abstract. FOSDEM is a massive and thoroughly organized event, which produces a printed scheduled booklet every time, and many thousand copies will be in the hands of many thousand visitors. Since this an open source community event, please refrain from turning in a talk that is a pure corporate or product commercial. Also, this is a highly technical devroom on a conference aimed at developers and advanced users, so please only submit talks on a subject you actually worked on. If you are unsure on whether you can come or not, perhaps you are unsure about corporate sponsorship of your travels (this is FOSDEM, why are you not there anyway?), wait with submitting your talk until you are certain that you can be present. All talks will be recorded and made available as CC-By-Sa or CC-By. The FOSDEM CoC will have to be agreed as well (https://fosdem.org/2024/practical/conduct/) If there are any issues, just email graphics-devroom-manager(a)fosdem.org, where you can reach the team of graphics devroom managers, Pierre Moreau, Arek Hiler, Martin Roukala, and myself, who will also schedule and review your talk submissions. We will be keeping a keen eye on submissions and scheduling, and hope to see you all at FOSDEM. Thanks! Luc Verhaegen.

FOSDEM 2024 - European Policy devroom info and Call for Participation
by Simon Phipps 18 Nov '23

18 Nov '23

# FOSDEM 2024 - European Policy devroom info and Call for Participation ## Overview [FOSDEM] is one of the world's premier meetings of free software developers, with thousands of people attending each year. FOSDEM 2024 will take place on the weekend of 3-4 February 2024 in-person in Brussels. It is the perfect place for a meeting with policy makers whose work will affect free and open source software development! This is the Call for Participation (CfP) in the "Open Source in the European Legislative Landscape" (EU Policy) Devroom at FOSDEM 2024. This unique DevRoom seeks to bring developers and policy makers together to shape future work in Europe. ## Details The EU Policy Devroom will take place for a full day (09:00-17:00), on Sunday 4 February 2024, and will be an in-person event in a room to be announced later. Open source software is the power-house of technology innovation in Europe. The EU Policy Devroom at FOSDEM is an informal, in-person event oriented to authors, users, and enthusiasts of FLOSS programs that are created in the European Union. It will also feature the policy experts from the European Institutions who are creating and refining the laws of Europe that affect open source software development. The goal of the devroom is for FOSS Community Members and European policy makers to meet and understand each other so as to ensure future legislation does no harm to the valuable open source sector, and ideally advances the development and use of open source. **We are looking for participants!** ## Call for participation This devroom is not like others! It is to develop future EU policy, not open source code! We seek to stimulate a genuine and open discussion that will become the fuel for good legislation in the future. We are building workshops where accepted participants will be grouped together with EU policy experts for a journey from the current state to a future state in each topic area. We aim to produce a report in each policy area arising from each workshop. An indicative, non-exclusive, list of workshop topics is: - **Responsibility and liability**: How do recent instruments such as the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) and Product Liability Directive Revision affect you, your project and your future. - **Open Source in the Public Sector**: The Interoperable Europe Act creates new opportunities for Union-wide interoperable systems. How would your project be affected by it? How should member states deliver on their duties under it? What would future versions of the Act look like? - **Open Source as the Solution To Policy Problems**: The Data Act and Digital Markets Act create obligations for so-called "gatekeepers". Is open source the right implementation enforcement solution? Your project may have solutions relating to online app stores, messaging systems, identity validation - bring your experiences. - **Supporting Open Source**: While the European Union has made great strides such as forming an EU OSPO, other recent instruments have not promoted open source innovation. How should future policies be designed to promote innovation through adoption and use of open source? What projects and initiatives could you bring to the discussion? The final list of workshop topics will be built from the submissions for participation that we receive both from developers. We will invite policy experts to join based on the submissions we receive so workshop tracks will also depend on their acceptance. ### Key dates * 8 December 2023: Submission deadline at 23:59 in your time zone. * 19 December 2023: Announcement of devroom schedule * 22 December 2023: Selected participants notified (or before) * 4 February 2024: EU Policy devroom in FOSDEM (You must be available in person to participate!) ### Submission process Please use the [Pretalx] system to submit a participation proposal for the devroom. Remember to select "Open Source in the European Legislative Landscape" for the "Track" pop-up selection! ### Submission guidelines The proposal submission system will ask for all the information, in a succession of three screens. Note that this year FOSDEM is using a new submission system, Pretalx. User accounts from the old system (Pentabarf) are not valid, so you will need to create a new account. We will be looking for relevance to the conference and devroom themes, but essentially any relevant experiences with a *bona fide* connection to the Devroom topic will be considered. Please note that you will most probably *not* be giving a full presentation; rather the room managers will place you as a co-participant in a given workshop. So explain what you would like to propose to the European institutions along with why you think you are the person to make the proposal, not the details of a talk. Feel free to indicate in the "Submission Notes" area any factors you would like considered beyond the core content you are proposing, but please note that the final decision on workshops will be made by the devroom managers based on the accepted proposals. We will contact you before the schedule is published to ensure you are comfortable with the allocations we make Please note FOSDEM aims to record and live-stream all talks. The CC-BY license is used for the recordings. ## Volunteers needed To make the devroom run successfully, we are looking for volunteers. If you will be attending the devroom and would like to help, please reach out to the organizers, especially if you have the necessary experience to be a rapporteur for a workshop! ## Spread the word and discuss If you know of any mailing lists or other online venues where this info and CfP would be relevant, please feel free to forward this document. ## Contact The organizers of the devroom can be reached by sending email to eu-policy-devroom-manager(a)fosdem.org. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any inquiry or suggestion for the devroom. The initial Devroom managers are: - Simon Phipps, OSI - Enzo Ribagnac, Eclipse although we expect this list to grow. 17 Nov '23

FOSDEM 2024 Call for Participation ================================== The Perl & Raku Foundation is thrilled to announce that the FOSDEM organising team has accepted our proposal to set up a DevRoom on Saturday, February 3rd 2024. It has been quite a few years since the last Perl DevRoom at FOSDEM. Historically, they have always been well attended and packed. ## Time for an Update Since last time, a lot has happened, and TPRF is excited to help create this venue for sharing news with developers from Europe and across the globe. Many FOSDEM visitors have a background using Perl, but may have missed out on recent developments. Larry Wall himself was a guest speaker at FOSDEM in 2015 to announce Perl 6, which was later renamed to Raku. Much has happened since then, and there is lots to share! ## Participation TPRF would like to offer contributors to Perl, Raku, their ecosystems and modules, or any other FOSS projects the opportunity to participate at this exciting annual event in Brussels. The TPRF-FOSDEM organisers are specifically looking for anyone with a compelling story to share about their Open Source project that has a strong background in Raku or Perl. Do you have something fascinating or new to share with the Perl and Raku communities? Then **do not hesitate** to submit your presentation proposal. Visit the [FOSDEM 2024 Pretalx website](https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2024/cfp) and fill in the form. There is a _limited availability_ for speakers to give a 20 minute engaging presentation. **Deadline for submissions is December 1st, 2023.** ## About FOSDEM FOSDEM is a two day, free event for software developers to meet, share ideas, and collaborate. Every year, thousands of developers of free and open source software from all over the world gather at this annual event in Brussels. FOSDEM 2024 will take place on **Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 February 2024**. It will be an in-person event at the **ULB Solbosch Campus, Brussels, Belgium, Europe.** [FOSDEM 2024 website](https://fosdem.org/2024/) ## About The Perl & Raku Foundation TPRF is dedicated to the advancement of the Perl and Raku programming languages, through open discussions, collaboration, design, and code. The Perl and Raku Foundation's desire is to build a strong, healthy and sustainable language ecosystem and community. The TPRF grant programs help fund development of open source projects to benefit Perl, Raku and the broader community. The foundation helps to sponsor many events, worldwide, each year. Open source development depends on events like FOSDEM, which allow developers to come together in person and share ideas, code, and have fun. CfP for Legal and Policy Issues DevRoom at FOSDEM 2024
by Karen M. Sandler 16 Nov '23

16 Nov '23

####################################################################### Call For Participation Legal and Policy Issues DevRoom at FOSDEM 2024 CONFERENCE DATE: Saturday & Sunday 3-4 February 2024 in person in Brussels,Belgium DEVROOM DATE: Saturday 3 February 2024 CFP DEADLINE: Monday 11 December 2023 at 23:59 AoE (Anywhere on Earth) SPEAKERS NOTIFIED: Thursday 21 December 2023 (on or before) Quick CFP Overview (TL;DR) ========================== Hackers, developers, contributors and lawyers alike are encouraged to submit on any FOSS-related policy or legal topic. We seek proposals for 30 or 50 minute talks or panels that address issues of software freedom project policies and legal issues that extend beyond and/or are orthogonal to technical issues faced by projects. For ideas about talk topics see the background information below. You can respond to this CFP by going to https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2024/cfp and creating one (or more) talk proposals by 11 December 2023. See details below. CFP Details =========== Copyright law provides many of the basic legal underpinnings of Free Software. Patent and trademark law and legal frameworks relating to data privacy and security also have significant relevance to Free Software development. Governance and policies around Free Software projects (beyond mere outbound licensing) set the rules for collaboration and can be critical to a project's success. Also governments, institutions and administrations increasingly rely on Free Software and regulate and govern this area. Our community has substantial expertise in this area yet there are few venues to discuss these matters in a forum open to all. Hackers, developers, contributors, lawyers, policy experts, and community leaders all possess expertise in these matters. This DevRoom seeks proposals for 30 or 50 minute talks or panels. Sessions should address issues of software freedom project policies and legal issues that extend beyond and/or are orthogonal to technical issues faced by projects and government regulations. Such topics could include, but aren't necessarily limited to: * What legislation should we be watching, what has been recently enacted, and what coming soon? What effect could these have on software freedom? * Who controls the copyright, trademark, or patent licensing, release plans, CLA administration, or security bug reporting policies of your project, and why? What challenges have you faced in these policy areas and how are you seeking to change it? * How is your project governed? Do you have a non-profit organization, or a for-profit company that primarily controls your project, or neither? Do you wish your project governance was different? Who decided your governance initially? What politics (good and bad) have occurred around your governance choices and how have you changed your policy? Does it make sense to separate the technical and organizational governance of a project and are there any deep implications of that choice? Does your project have a "shadow governance", whereby technical governance is open and fair, but some entity has its own opaque political structure that influences your project? Are you exploring any new solutions for governance? * How do ethical issues intersect with your project? How do those issues interact with software freedom? How can we protect user's rights in the current legal and technical landscape? Are there ways to mitigate the hold that click through terms of service have over the average person's use of software? Are privacy regulations like GDPR having any appreciable impact on software freedom? * Legal topics of all sorts and their interaction with software freedom culture and work remain welcome, and could include: How does your project make use of legal advice? What legal advice do you give projects and what topics do you put first on the list to worry about in projects? Discuss in detail a legal and/or policy issue your project faced and how your community dealt with it. What lessons did you learn? Are some of your developers afraid to discuss legal or quasi-legal issues without their lawyers, or their employers' lawyers present? How has that impeded or helped your project? Are your lawyers really your lawyers (e.g., do corporate lawyers for companies in your community influence the direction of the project even though not all contributors work for that company)? * Contribution and engagement policies: how does your project engage new contributors and what policy decisions did your project make to welcome new contributors? What legal issues or policy concerns has your project faced historically in its community engagement efforts, and what did you learn from these experiences? * How does money affect your community? How is funding of developers handled in your project? What policies do you set to welcome volunteers to join a community where most developers are paid? Does your project have policies that forbid funding developers directly? Does reliance on volunteer labor lead to lack of diversity since only the affluent can participate? If you had unconstrained resources at your disposal, what would you change about the funding structure of your project? Given the resources you have, what have you tried to change? Have you succeeded or failed? Would more money in the ecosystem hurt or help your project? * How do projects handle conflicts of interest and make sure that relevant interests of contributors are disclosed in important decision making discussions? * Strategies and plans for addressing harassment, exclusionary and/or discriminatory behavior in FLOSS communities. Do you have a Code of Conduct? Have you needed to enforce it? Was it successful in improving behavior and diversity in your community? What strategies do you use to you handle toxic behavior in your community? * Talks on license compliance, licensing business models, and anything akin to, or building upon, what you've seen in our DevRoom before are of course welcome. (URLs to talks from previous years are below.) Regarding topic relevancy, here's the only "don't": please don't propose introductory talks; there are other venues appropriate for those. FOSDEM is the meeting place of experts in Free Software project governance, law, and policy. This DevRoom is for intermediate to advanced topics surrounding just about anything you might call a "legal" or "policy" issue for your project or software freedom! Should I Submit? ================ Do consider that what may seem elementary to you may in fact be an intermediate topic in this area. In particular, while we expect to receive submissions from lawyers, we've found that non-lawyers often know just as much (and often more) about these topics than lawyers. Developers and other Free Software project participants who regularly face complex policy and legal questions are strongly and particularly encouraged to submit proposals. Historically, some of the most lively and intriguing talks in this DevRoom's previous years have been from developers who have been thrust (often due to circumstances beyond their control) into dealing with legal and policy issues for Free Software. Look at past talks in our DevRoom for inspiration: https://archive.fosdem.org/2023/schedule/track/legal_and_policy_issues/ https://archive.fosdem.org/2022/schedule/track/legal_and_policy_issues/ https://archive.fosdem.org/2021/schedule/track/legal_and_policy_issues/ https://archive.fosdem.org/2020/schedule/track/legal_and_policy_issues/ CFP Schedule And Submission Details =================================== Submit proposals NO LATER THAN 11 December 2023 at 23:59 AoE (Anywhere on Earth) Please use the following URL to submit your talk to FOSDEM 2024: https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2024/cfp and follow these steps: * Select as the Track "Legal and Policy Issues devroom". * Include a title.
