FOSDEM 2024 Distributions Devroom - Call for Participation
by Justin W. Flory (he/him) 15 Nov '23

15 Nov '23

The Distributions Devroom returns to FOSDEM 2024, in-person in Brussels for a full day (exact day TBD). The call for proposals is now open. Read on to know more about what topics the Distributions Devroom organizers want to hear more about in 2024. Important Dates --------------- - CFP closes: Tuesday, 5 December 2023 - Deadline for accepted speakers to confirm: Tuesday, 12 December 2023 - Final schedule announcement: Friday, 15 December 2023 About the Distributions Devroom ------------------------------- Linux distributions are critical digital infrastructure in the 2020s. In addition to their relevance today, they are some of the oldest and most historic Free and Open Source Software communities still in existence. As the context of Linux distributions changes and evolves since their origin in 1991, they remain an important fixture in digital infrastructure. Linux distributions do important work in ensuring various versions of upstream software work well together and can co-exist. They are also often responsible for “de-vendoring” upstream software so that security fixes can be applied more quickly. Additionally, Linux distributions have become the centerpiece of other important infrastructure projects like containers and container orchestration software. This devroom provides a unique home for the convergence of several different Linux distribution communities to share ideas and start conversations that matter to all of us. Although there are several different distributions that have different approaches to software packaging, choice of desktop environments, and various use cases, this devroom is a historic open forum that is unique to FOSDEM in making a space for all of our communities to share and learn from each other. The Distributions Devroom organizers can be reached at distributions-devroom(a)lists.fosdem.org. Call for Proposals ------------------ The devroom audience is contributors and developers of Linux distributions. We may accept a limited amount of content with a focus on end users; however, the devroom organizers believe user-focused content is a better fit in other devrooms or conferences. So, we welcome submissions targeted toward contributors and developers of distributions. We accept submissions for either 25-minute and 55-minute slots. NEW! In the CFP submission system, submitters should identify a category in their submission that best identifies the scope of their topic. There are three categories in 2024: - Development - Community - Emerging Topics See suggested topics for each category below: ### ### Category: Development - Distribution construction, installation, deployment, packaging, and content management. - Balancing new code and active upstreams versus security updates and minimization of breaking changes. - Automation of releases and testing with minimal human involvement. - Delivering architecture-independent software. - Creating a secure supply chain by evaluating upstream components and providing a secure source for downstreams. - Distro-agnostic integration testing. ### ### Category: Community - Best practices and guidance for contributing in Linux distributions and their upstream dependencies. - Growing, participating, and working with communities in the distribution ecosystem. - Cross-distribution collaboration on common issues. - Working with vendors and including them in the community. - Non-engineering topics inside of distribution communities (e.g. documentation, marketing, internationalization, design, community operations, etc.). ### ### Category: Emerging Topics The future of distributions and emerging trends. This category is intentionally broad to best capture new ideas and thoughts that do not fit neatly into the above two categories. Process ------- 1. Go to the FOSDEM 2024 Pretalx website[1]. Pretalx has replaced Pentabarf! 2. Follow the instructions to create an account. 3. Once logged in, select “submit a CFP”. 4. Your submission must include the following information: - Proposal title - Track (choose Distributions from the drop-down menu) - Abstract - Description - Other details (i.e. your chosen category from the above list) - Session image (optional new feature) - Use this if you want an illustration to go with your proposal. Please do not upload files larger than 10.0MB! - Additional speaker 5. Click Continue and complete the next page: - About your proposal: If presenting software and/or content, which open source license do you use? - FOSDEM is an open-source software conference, please specify which OSI-approved license[2] your proposal uses. - Extra review material: Only shown to reviewers and not published when scheduled. - Extra contact details (optional) - Click Continue and complete the next page: - Your name - Personal biography - Availability during FOSDEM weekend [1] https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2024/cfp [2] https://opensource.org/licenses/ About FOSDEM ------------ FOSDEM is a free event for software developers to meet, share ideas and collaborate. Every year, thousands of developers of free and open source software from all over the world gather at the event in Brussels. FOSDEM hosts dozens of developer rooms, where community members run tracks on various topics. -- Cheers, Justin W. Flory (he/him) || 🔗 jwf.io TZ=America/New_York (UTC-4) 🕗

Apply for an *online* talk: open-research-devroom-manager(a)fosdem.org About the Open Research devroom The Open Research devroom addresses FLOSS <https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/floss-and-foss.en.html> developers in a broad community concerned with research production and curation: scientists, engineers, journalists, archivists, curators, activists. The tools and technologies targeted are typically creating, handling or sharing knowledge artifacts: data, academic papers, books, collections, web contents, algorithms, artworks. This devroom provides a place and time to discuss the issues related to the creation and usage of open research technologies, with the ambition to foster discussions between designers, developers and users, bridging multiple knowledge-based communities together, and with the broader FLOSS community. The Open Research devroom aims to: - Allow knowledge-based tool developers to publicize their effort and become aware of other FLOSS projects. - Facilitate the pooling of coding efforts on (often poorly funded) tools. - Create a network where otherwise isolated developers, research engineers can share common FLOSS concerns. - Provide social recognition for people who work in fields where designing and developing tools is less considered than usual outcomes (e.g. not publishing papers in research, not writing investigation in data journalism, etc). For more content information, you can also read about the state of the conversation <https://reticular.hypotheses.org/1825> in the devroom in 2020-2021. What is the FOSDEM? CFP Testing and Continuous Delivery devroom
by Alexander Todorov 14 Nov '23

14 Nov '23

On behalf of the Testing and Continuous Delivery devroom I would like to announce that call for participation is now open! This room is about building better software through a focus on testing and continuous delivery practices across all layers of the stack. The purpose of this devroom is to share good and bad examples around the question “how to improve quality of our software by automating tests, deliveries or deployments” and to showcase new open source tools and practices. **What** Since this devroom has been a regular at FOSDEM, here are some ideas of what we would like to see, and what worked in prior years, they're just ideas though. Check out our website for more references: Testing in the real, open source world: - War stories/strategies for testing large scale or complex projects - Tools that extend the ability to test low-level code, e.g. bootloaders, init systems, etc. - Projects that are introducing new/interesting ways of testing "systems" - Address the automated testing frameworks fragmentation - Stories from end-users (e.g. success/failure) - Continuous Integration - Continuous Delivery - Continuous Deployment - Security in Software Supply Chain - Pipeline standardization - Interoperability in CI/CD - Lessons learned Cool Tools (good candidates for lightning talks): - Project showcases, modern tooling - How your open source tool made developing quality software better - What tools do you use to setup your CI/CD - Combining projects/plugins/tools to build amazing things "Not enough people in the open source community know how to use $X, but here's a tutorial on how to use $X to make your project better." **Where** FOSDEM 2024 will be hosted in person at ULB Solbosch Campus, Brussels, Belgium. **When** - CFP Submission Deadline: 23:59 UTC, 10 December 2023 - Schedule Announced: 15 December 2023 - Presentations: 4h February 2024 **How** - The reference time will be Brussels local time (CET) - Talks will be delivered live, no pre-recorded talks - Q/A session will be live - Talks will be streamed Please submit one (or more) 30-40 minute talk proposal(s) OR one (or more) 10 minute lightning talk proposal(s) by 23:59 UTC on December 10th 2023. We will notify all those submitting proposals about their acceptance by December 15th 2023. To submit a talk proposal (you can submit multiple proposals if you'd like) use Pretalx, the FOSDEM paper submission system -> https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2024/. Be sure to select "Testing and Continuous delivery" otherwise we won't see it! For more information please see https://fosdem-testingautomation.github.io/. -- Alex

Call for Proposals: Designing Futures of FOSS Content Management
by Mathias Bolt Lesniak 13 Nov '23

13 Nov '23

# Call for Proposals: Designing Futures of FOSS Content Management at FOSDEM ## Discuss, learn, and work on issues that affect FOSS CMS projects, from policy to development, security, and beyond. Drupal, Joomla, TYPO3, and WordPress are thrilled to announce the call for proposals for our first combined Dev Room track at FOSDEM 2024: https://fosdem.org/2024/ * **What?** FOSDEM is a free annual event where open source developers can connect, share knowledge, network, and build community. * **Where?** Brussels, Belgium, at the ULB Solbosch Campus. * **When?** FOSDEM will be held on February 3rd and 4th, 2024. Our dev room is scheduled for Sunday, the 4th of February. * **Who?** You, of course! Submit your proposal here by December 1st. Make sure you select the correct track! * **Why?** We’re so glad you asked. Read on… In 2023, leadership from the top four open source CMS projects (Drupal, Joomla, TYPO3, and WordPress) collaborated for the first time on an open letter, webinar, and other efforts regarding the upcoming Cyber Resilience Act. We recognized that we are stronger together and want to promote the idea of FOSS First, as our projects have more in common than we do differences. Choosing FOSS should be any customer’s first choice, a choice based on the unique FOSS-derived benefits. Choosing the platform comes second to that. Expertise and ability to solve a customer’s problem is where the real competition happens. Though our CMS projects solve problems differently, the challenges we see ahead are the same. Working with FOSS should mean working together, making sure FOSS CMSs together make FOSS the obvious choice. That means caring for community, contribution, and code beyond our own. The room will be hosted by Jeffrey A. "jam" McGuire, an experienced event host and long-time friend of and contributor to multiple FOSS CMS communities. Other FOSS CMS projects are welcome, and encouraged to attend and submit proposals. ## Important Dates * CFP opens: November 12, 2023 * CFP closes: December 1, 2023 * Schedule announced: December 10, 2023 (approximately) * FOSDEM: 3–4 February 2024 * Dev room track date: 4 February 2024 ## What We’re Looking For We would love to see topic proposals that cross CMS project boundaries. This could be specific examples of past projects, ideas for future collaboration, a discussion or panel about challenges that span website content management projects or products, and beyond. This is the first year for this devroom topic, so feel free to get creative with your ideas. ## How to Submit a Proposal 1. Go to https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2024/cfp 2. Select “Designing Futures of FOSS Content Management with the Open Website Alliance” from the Track menu. 3. Fill in the rest of the form. ## How will proposals be evaluated? Proposals will be evaluated according to these criteria. You don’t have to fulfill all of them to be selected. * Real or potential relevance to multiple FOSS CMS projects * Past, present, or future impact on FOSS CMS collaboration * Degree of community involvement * Applicability of approach or best-practices presented * Novelty of the idea or concept presented * Quality of submission and presenter’s experience We will attempt to have a fair distribution of talks across all FOSS CMSs represented — from the four named above, as well as any others that submit proposals. Best wishes on behalf of the organizers, Mathias Bolt Lesniak Member of the Board, TYPO3 Association, typo3.org/association <https://typo3.org/association> TYPO3 Association, Gewerbestr. 10, CH-4450 Sissach, Switzerland

CfP - Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) devroom
by Alexios Zavras 13 Nov '23

13 Nov '23

The following can also be found at: https://hackmd.io/@spdx/fosdem2024-cfp # FOSDEM 2024 - SBOM devroom info and CfP ## Overview [FOSDEM] is one of the world's premier meetings of free software developers, with thousands of people attending each year. FOSDEM 2024 will take place on the weekend of 3-4 February 2024 in-person in Brussels. This is the Call for Participation (CfP) in the Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) Devroom at FOSDEM 2024. ## Details The SBOM Devroom will take place for a full day (09:00-17:00), on Sunday 4 February 2024, and will be an in-person event in a room to be announced later. The SBOM Devroom at FOSDEM is an informal, technical, in-person event oriented to authors, users, and enthusiasts of FLOSS programs that produce, consume, or transform SBOMs. While other domains like construction, mechanical engineering, or even computer hardware have long used the concept of Bill of Materials (BOMs), software traditionally has not followed this best practice. There have been efforts running for over a decade to address this, and recent developments have pushed forward the use and wide adoption of Software BOMs. Since most of today’s software is made up of Open Source, it is important that this information can be accurately conveyed. It includes, but is not limited to, metadata such as name and version but also licensing or security information. The goal of the devroom is for interested people to get in touch with each other, exchange ideas and opinions, have interesting and hopefully productive discussions, and finally what is most important: have fun. **We are looking for presenters!** ## Call for participation We are interested in presentations on any topic related to Software Bill of Materials: content, definitions, standardization efforts, tools, etc. An indicative, non-exclusive, list of topics is: - Tools that produce SBOMs or related information - Tools that consume SBOMs to generate other information - Case studies and lessons learned from real-life use or introduction of SBOMs - Use of different types of SBOMs (e.g., Design, Source, Build, Deployed, Runtime, etc.) in the Software Supply Chain - Verification and linking of SBOMs to other relevant artifacts - Special areas of interest not covered by current SBOM formats, that need discussion to be included Any effort that would lead on increasing collaboration between different approaches and tools is particularly encouraged. ### Key dates * 8 December: Submission deadline * 19 December: Announcement of devroom schedule * 4 February: SBOM devroom in FOSDEM (You must be available in person to give your presentation!) ### Submission process Please use the [Pretalx] system to submit a talk proposal for the devroom. Remember to select "Software Bill of Materials" for the "Track" pop-up selection! ### First-time speakers FOSDEM devrooms are a welcoming environment for people who have never given a talk before. Please feel free to contact the devroom administrators personally if you would like to ask any questions about it. ### Submission guidelines The proposal submission system will ask for all the information, in a sucession of three screens. Note that this year FOSDEM is using a new submission system, Pretalx. User accounts from the old system (Pentabarf) are not valid, so you will need to create a new account. We will be looking for relevance to the conference and devroom themes, but essentially any presentation about SBOMs would qualify. Please note that the audience is expected to be _developers_ of Free and Open Source Software and will most probably be _knowledgeable_ in at least some aspects of SBOMs. Therefore aim your presentation accordingly. Feel free to indicate in the "Submission Notes" area your preferred duration for your presentation between 5 and 45 minutes, but please note that the final decision on duration will be made by the devroom organizers based on the number of accepted proposals. As the overall duration of the devroom is fixed, the only way to accommodate more speakers is by limiting the length of each talk. Keep in mind that, as the event will be in-person, we also need to account for switching between speakers. Shorter presentations are **strongly** encouraged! Please note FOSDEM aims to record and live-stream all talks. The CC-BY license is used for the recordings. ## Volunteers needed To make the devroom run successfully, we are always looking for volunteers. If you will be attending the devroom and would like to help, please reach out to the organizers! ## Spread the word and discuss If you know of any mailing lists or other online venues where this info and CfP would be relevant, please feel free to forward this document. ## Contact The organizers of the devroom can be reached by sending email to sbom-devroom-manager(a)fosdem.org. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any inquiry or suggestion for the devroom. For any private queries, you may also contact the organizers directly: - Alexios Zavras <fosdem(a)zvr.gr> - Kate Stewart <stewart(a)linux.com> - Adolfo García Veytia <puerco(a)chainguard.dev> [FOSDEM]: https://fosdem.org [Pretalx]: https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2024/cfp -- zvr -
