Call for Participation: Package Managers Devroom at FOSDEM 2026
by Andrew Nesbitt 06 Nov '25

06 Nov '25

We are excited to announce the Call for Participation for the Package Managers devroom at FOSDEM 2026, taking place on Saturday, 31st January 2026 at the Université libre de Bruxelles, Belgium. Submission deadline: 1st December 2025 ABOUT THE DEVROOM Package managers are critical infrastructure for developers and end users alike, handling dependency resolution, licensing, reproducibility, provenance, software supply chain security, and long-term maintainability. As ecosystems proliferate, package managers face recurring challenges: dependency solving, namespace collisions, reproducibility, metadata standards, binary vs. source builds, supply chain security, and cryptographic signing of artifacts. The Free and Open Source community has built dozens of package managers across operating systems (Debian's APT, Fedora's DNF, Arch's pacman, Nix, Guix), programming language ecosystems (PyPI/pip/uv, npm, Cargo, RubyGems, Conda, Pixi), domain-specific tools (Spack, EasyBuild for HPC), and universal formats (Flatpak, Snap, AppImage). Each has made unique trade-offs and innovations. This devroom provides a gathering place for maintainers, researchers, and users of package managers to discuss lessons learned, new developments, and common infrastructure challenges. It's a neutral forum where different communities can meet, exchange ideas, and foster collaboration on universal issues. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Submit your proposal through the FOSDEM pretalx system: https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2026/cfp Important: Select "Package Managers devroom" as the track in the dropdown menu. Please include: * Title and subtitle of your talk * Short abstract (one paragraph) * Longer description (optional) * Desired talk length (10/25 minutes) * Links to related work, projects, or previous talks * Brief bio CODE OF CONDUCT All speakers and attendees are expected to follow the FOSDEM Code of Conduct. By submitting a proposal, you agree to abide by these guidelines. https://fosdem.org/2026/practical/conduct/ QUESTIONS? If you have any questions about the devroom or your submission, please reach out to w.vollprecht(a)gmail.com. We especially encourage submissions from individuals and communities underrepresented in free and open-source software. Looking forward to your proposals! Call for participation: Software Performance Devroom - FOSDEM 2026
by zamazan4ik 06 Nov '25

06 Nov '25

Hello! We are delighted to announce the Call for Participation for the "Software Performance" devroom at FOSDEM 2026! This is our first time doing this devroom, so let's make it interesting for everyone together! About the devroom =============== Software Performance is a huge and important topic nowadays: it shapes user experience, infrastructure cost, scalability, and even sustainability. Yet, every open source project tackles performance in its own way: through tools, methodologies, trade-offs, and practices. This devroom aims to create a space for cross-project collaboration and experience exchange in the field of software performance. We want to bring together contributors from different ecosystems to share how they measure, optimize, and sustain performance in open source. The devroom’s goal is to: * Foster knowledge sharing between open source communities tackling performance challenges. * Highlight success stories and lessons learned in improving performance across different open source projects. * Connect people who care about performance - whether in compilers, databases, operating systems, or any other software domain. Submission ============== Please submit your proposal through the FOSDEM pretalx interface < https://fosdem.org/submit>, clicking the “Submit a proposal” button. Please make sure you select “Software Performance” as the "Track”. By default, we will assume you submit a proposal for a full talk, aiming for 25 minutes of presenting and 5 minutes of questions. If you propose a different kind of talk and would prefer a different length, please do clearly state so in the “Submission Notes” field. We optimize the length of individual presentations, taking into account all submissions and preferred length to achieve the best possible overall program. Presentations will be recorded and streamed. Sending your proposal implies giving permission to be recorded. This year, FOSDEM only accepts in-person presentations, with a live stream and live chat for remote participants. The deadline for receiving proposals is November 30th, 2025. Speakers will be notified of acceptance or rejection by December 15th. Suggested Topics ============== Software performance is a huge topic, and it can be viewed from different and diverse perspectives: * CPU/GPU throughput/latency * memory consumption * energy efficiency * I/O performance * etc. We are interested in all of them! We invite proposals on any aspect of software performance in open source, especially those that share practical experience or cross-community insights, such as (but not limited to): * Real-world performance case studies in open source: what worked, what didn’t, and why (like CachyOS performance-oriented developments) * Interesting performance challenges and developments from open source projects (e.g. network stack optimization from the Linux kernel) * Performance governance in open source communities (processes, culture, sustainability) * Performance documentation and education initiatives (like FFmpeg Assembly Language Lessons) * Whatever else you think is important for open source performance! Talks involving performance developments across project or domain boundaries are strongly encouraged. If you are not sure whether your topic is suitable or not, don’t hesitate to send it! Important Dates ============== * November 30th 2025: Deadline for submission of proposals * December 15th 2025: Announcement of acceptance + final schedule * February 1st 2026: Devroom day, in-person in Brussels. Volunteers ============== We will also call for volunteers to help us run the event and help us with the devroom operation. Please email the organizers, in case you are interested. Organizers ============== You can reach out directly to the organizers, if you have a specific request or question: * Alexander Zaitsev: zamazan4ik [at] gmail.com (primary email) OR zamazan4ik [at] tut.by (secondary email) -- Alexander Zaitsev

Graphics DevRoom 26: Cfp.
by Luc Verhaegen 05 Nov '25

05 Nov '25

20 years after the first X.org DevRoom at FOSDEM 2006, there will be the 16th Graphics DevRoom at FOSDEM on Sunday the 1st of February 2026. The talk topics of the graphics devroom encompass: * graphics drivers: display, 2d engines, 3d engines, at bootloader, kernel and userspace levels. * media/video drivers: camera/capture engines, hardware media encoders and decoders on all levels. * input drivers for bootloaders, kernels and userspace. * windowing systems (X, wayland, surfaceflinger, others) and window managers. * graphics toolkits (QT, GTK, others). * 3D and Compute APIs (OpenGL, Vulkan, DirectX, others), and 3d and game engines. * Virtual reality hardware and toolkits. * Artificial Intelligence HW acceleration. * Media encode and decode applications. And the tools needed to help configure and run the above. Submission deadline is the 7th of december, but do not count on this date, once the schedule has filled with enough solid talks, we will accept no more. Also, the best slots (afternoon) will be handed out on a first-come-first-serve basis. You can submit your talk here: https://fosdem.org/submit Since this an open source community event, please refrain from turning in a talk that is a pure corporate or product commercial. Also, this is a highly technical devroom on a conference aimed at developers and advanced users, so please only submit talks on a subject you actually worked on. If you are unsure on whether you can come or not, perhaps you are unsure about corporate sponsorship of your travels (this is FOSDEM, why are you not there anyway?), wait with submitting your talk until you are certain that you can be present. Please put some time and effort in your talk proposal, especially in the title and at least abstract, and your own background. While there is no more printed schedule, your description is what will get people to watch your talk, and will remain online forever next to the recording of your talk. We have a full day at our disposal, which runs from from 9:00 til 17:00, so we can fit anywhere between 8 and 16 talks. With 5 minutes for setup time, and 5 minutes of Q&A, full hour talks are actually 50 minutes, and half hour talks are 20 minutes. Depending on the amount of proposals, we might need to switch to 20 minute talks for everyone. All talks will be recorded and made available as CC-By-Sa or CC-By. The FOSDEM CoC will have to be agreed as well (https://fosdem.org/2026/practical/conduct/) Submission tips: When submitting at https://fosdem.org/submit, you can ignore the "You can enter proposals until 2025-11-16 22:00 (Europe/Brussels), 2 weeks from now." statement, as that is for Main track talks only, and not relevant for DevRooms. Please put some time and effort in your talk proposal, especially in the title and at least abstract, and your own background. While there is no more printed schedule, your description is what will get people to watch your talk, and will remain online forever next to the recording of your talk. On the first page, for track, select "Graphics". Please write your preferred slot length (20 or 50) in the submission notes. On page 2 you also need to provide a code license, this is a free-form field, so write what is appropriate. If there are any issues, just email graphics-devroom-manager(a)fosdem.org, where you can reach the team of graphics devroom managers, Arek Hiler, Timur Kristóf and myself, who will also schedule and review your talk submissions. We will be keeping a keen eye on submissions and scheduling, and hope to see you all at FOSDEM. Thanks! Luc Verhaegen.

The Distributions Devroom is returning to FOSDEM for a full day of distribution-related content in Brussels on Sunday, February 1, 2026. The Distros Devroom organizers are happy to share that the call for proposals is now open, and will be accepting proposals until December 5. Read on to learn more about this devroom, what topics we want to see, and how you can submit. ## Important Dates * Now - Call for Participation opens * December 1 - Call for Participation ends * December 5 - Speakers notified * December 12 - Deadline for speakers to confirm * December 15 - Schedule published * February 1 - Distros Devroom at FOSDEM ## Call for Proposals Please submit your talk proposals using the FOSDEM CFP submission page: https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2026/cfp Your submission must include the following information: * Proposal title * Session (chose Talk) * Track (choose Distributions from the drop-down menu) * Abstract (as you would like it to appear publicly, 100-250 words) By default, all talks are 25 minutes, incuding time for Q+A. Occasionally, we may provide longer time slots for deep dives that are broadly interesting. If you think your talk should be considered for a longer time slot, explain why in the Submission Notes. ## Themes We're interested in talks on a number of topics, including: * Technologies for package management, automated testing, and release deployment * Long term maintenance and backporting security updates * Evaluating upstream components for secure supply chains * Developments in image-based operating systems and container base images * Delivering multiple-architecture or architecture-agnostic software. * Building commmunity around distributions. * Emerging technologies in the Linux ecosystem. The audience for the Distributions Devroom is primarily contributors and developers of Linux distributions. We may accept a limited amount of content with a focus on end users, but most user-focused content better fits in other devrooms or events. We look forward to new and interesting submissions. ## About the Distributions Devroom Linux distributions are critical digital infrastructure in the 2020s. They remain an important fixture even as our expectations of how they work and support workloads has evolved over the decades. Linux distributions do important work in ensuring various versions of upstream software work well together and can co-exist. They have become the centerpiece of other important infrastructure projects like containers and container orchestration software. The Distributions Devroom provides a unique home for the convergence of several different Linux distribution communities to share ideas and start conversations that matter to all of us. Although there are several different distributions that have different approaches to software packaging, choice of desktop environments, and various use cases, the Distributions Devroom is a historic open forum that is unique to FOSDEM in making a space for all of our communities to share and learn from each other. The Distributions Devroom organizers can be reached at <distributions-devroom(a)lists.fosdem.org>. ## About FOSDEM FOSDEM is a free event for software developers to meet, share ideas and collaborate. Every year, thousands of developers of free and open source software from all over the world gather at the event in Brussels. FOSDEM hosts dozens of developer rooms, where community members run tracks on various topics.
