Fwd: [CFP] Fast and Streaming Data Devroom
by Javier Ramirez 15 Nov '22

15 Nov '22

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Javier Ramirez <javier(a)formatinternet.com> Date: Fri, Nov 11, 2022 at 10:19 PM Subject: [CFP] Fast and Streaming Data Devroom To: <devroom-managers(a)lists.fosdem.org>, < streaming-devroom-manager(a)fosdem.org> Hi all, Web version available at https://javier.github.io/fast_and_streaming_data_devroom_cfp_fosdem_2023/ Markdown version below. Thanks, Javier ================================== # [FOSDEM 2023] [CFP] Fast and Streaming Data DevRoom Welcome to the first edition of the Fast and Streaming Data DevRoom at FOSDEM 2023. Our DevRoom will be scheduled from 10:30 to 14:30 on Saturday February 4th. We will be accepting in-person talks only, with recordings for all the sessions. *** # About the Fast and Streaming Data DevRoom 10 years ago, working with Fast and Streaming data was very challenging and mostly limited to using Apache Spark or Apache Storm and the lambda architecture. Apache Kafka itself was not released until 2011. Since then, we have seen a huge evolution of the ecosystem, with whole families of products dedicated to working with fast and/or streaming data: Message Brokers, Stream Processing Engines, Analytical Databases, Time-Series Databases, Real-Time Dashboards, Streaming ML Engines, or Streaming SQL Engines. Many of these tools have to face the same challenges: incomplete or out of order data, deduplication of events, ever-growing datasets, dealing with updates to already committed data, providing results in near-realtime, dealing with high availabity and upgrades when data is non-stop... The devroom is a colocated conference-within-a-conference that gives us the opportunity to come together and chat, hack, and share stories about Fast and/or Streaming Data in FLOSS ecosystems. The Fast and Streaming Data DevRoom is also an opportunity to identify potential collaborations across projects covering different aspects of the data lifecycle. We want our Devroom to be a safe space for everyone, so we kindly ask all participants to follow the FOSDEM code of conduct https://fosdem.org/2023/practical/conduct/. *** # Call For Papers We welcome submissions about, but not limited to, open source libraries, open source projects, or technical use cases explaining how one (or more) open source components are being used to power a real-life use case. Talks featuring more than one open source fast/streaming data project are encouraged. If in doubt, think if the talk you want to submit would be appealing for an audience interested in fast/streaming data. If the answer is yes, please do submit. We are aware some open source projects have also non-open source commercial offerings. This Devroom is only about the FOSS part of those projects, so please leave the commercial pitch outside of your proposals and presentations. ## Diversity, junior developers, and first-time speakers We actively encourage submissions from speakers from any backround and level of experience. We also welcome first-time speakers and, if needed, we will be happy to help you rehearse your talk before the event. ## Format of the talks We will be accepting submissions for 30 minutes talks, and for 10 minutes lighthing talks. (If we don't get enough submissions, we might skip lightning talks) You choose the format of your talk. It can be shell-driven, slide-driven, demo-driven, or a combination. If you prefer, you can also present without any screen at all, specifically for the lightning talks. If you will be accepting questions, please take into account those should be included within your allocated time-slot. Since we will have a mixed audience, all 30 minutes talks will need to feature an intro to make sure everyone can follow, but you are welcome to discuss internals of your project or to go as deep as you want into technical details. ## Recording of all the talks Please be aware of the fact that, barring any technical difficulties, Devroom talks at FOSDEM will be recorded. By submitting a proposal you agree to being recorded and to have your talk made available. *** # How to submit your talk If you would like to submit a proposal, you need to do it via the official FOSDEM website at [ https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/](https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/). If you already have a Pentabarf account from a previous FOSDEM edition, please reuse it. ## Important dates * Deadline: 2022-11-30 by midnight (Brussels Time) * Announcement of selected talks: 2022-12-15 * Devroom will take place in Brussels, from 10:30 to 14:30 on Saturday February 4th 2023. If you already know you want to submit a talk, please don't wait until the deadline so we can dedicate more time to consider your submission. ## Your profile Be sure to properly fill your Pentabarf profile (Person) with: * your name * a short speaker bio * your contact information (for the organizers). Please do include both email and phone as there will be no other reliable form of emergency communication on the day. Then follow Penta instructions to submit your talk (Create Event). ## Your talk information **_When submitting your talk, make sure to select the ‘Fast and Streaming Data Devroom’ as the 'Track’._** Use the tabs on top of the Event page to provide all the information you think it is relevant. At the very least we would need: * title and subtitle of the presentation * short abstract * duration of your talk. It needs to be either 30 minutes or 10 minutes * if you have them (but no pressure otherwise), use the _Links_ section to link to other relevant details (other publications, video of previous talks, ...) * use the _Submission Notes_ field to send any extra information *** # Contact If you need to get in touch with the organisers of this devroom, please email streaming-devroom-manager at fosdem.org *** # Acknowledgments We would like to thank [QuestDB](https://questdb.io) for allowing the Devroom organisers to manage it during working hours, and for sponsoring their trips to FOSDEM This site was created using the [Jekyll Hacker Theme]( https://pages-themes.github.io/hacker/) *** # About FOSDEM Official website: https://fosdem.org/ FOSDEM is a free and non-commercial event organised by the community for the community. The goal is to provide free and open source software developers and communities a place to meet to: * get in touch with other developers and projects; * be informed about the latest developments in the free software world; * be informed about the latest developments in the open source world; * attend interesting talks and presentations on various topics by project leaders and committers; * to promote the development and benefits of free software and open source solutions. Hello everyone, This year, the Matrix.org Foundation is excited to host the first ever Matrix.org Foundation and Community devroom in person at FOSDEM. Half a day of talks, demos and workshops around Matrix itself and projects built on top of Matrix. We encourage people working on the Matrix protocol or building on it in an open source project to submit a proposal! Note that companies are welcome to talk about the Matrix details of their open source projects, but marketing talks are not welcome. This call for participation is only about the physical devroom. A separate CfP will be issued for the online devroom once there are more details about it. Key dates are: - Conference dates 4-5 February, 2023 In person - Matrix Devroom date: Sunday 5 morning in person, online devroom to be announced - Submission deadline: Monday 5th December - Announcement of selected talks: Thursday 15th December You must be available in person to present your talk for the physical devroom. ## Talk Details The talks can follow one of thee two formats for the physical devroom * 20 min talk + 10 min Q&A, for topics that can be covered briefly * 50 min talk + 10 min Q&A for more complex subjects which need more focus We strongly encourage you to prepare a demo when it makes sense, so people can actually see what your work looks like in practice! Of course, the proposal must respect the FOSDEM terms as well: > The conference language is English. All content must relate to Free and Open Source Software. By participating in the event you agree to the publication of your recordings, slides and other content provided under the same licence as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY). ## Submitting a Proposal Proposals must be submitted on FOSDEM's conference management system Pentabarf <https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM23> before December 5 2022. If you are not used to Pentabarf, you can follow this beginners guide to Pentabarf <https://eyskens.me/beginners-guide-to-pentabarf/>. We expect to receive more requests than we have slots available. The devroom organisers will be reviewing the proposals and accepting them based on the potential positive impact the project has on Matrix (as defined in by the Mission section of https://matrix.org/foundation <https://matrix.org/foundation>). If a project proposal has been turned down, it doesn't mean we don't believe it has good potential. Maintainers are invited to join the #twim:matrix.org <https://matrix.to/#/%23twim:matrix.org> Matrix room to give it some visibility. Best,

14 Nov '22

At FOSDEM 2023<https://fosdem.org/2023>, LLVM will again participate with a dedicated devroom, on Saturday afternoon February 4th, in Brussels. As possibly the largest European Open Source Conference, FOSDEM attracts more than 600 lectures and over 8000 hackers - many core contributors of the world’s leading open source projects. Complementing the LLVM developer meetings, the devroom at FOSDEM provides a great opportunity for LLVM developers and the wider open source community to get together, connect and discuss. We invite academic, industrial and hobbyist speakers to present their work on developing or using LLVM, Clang, LLDB, Compiler-rt, MLIR, Flang, or any of the other technologies in the LLVM project. We are looking for: * Keynote speakers. * Technical presentations (default length of 30 minutes including questions) related to the development of LLVM technologies or use of those technologies in other projects. * Tutorials. * Lightning talks (default length of 5 minutes). * Demos. <https://discourse.llvm.org/t/cfp-fosdem-2023-llvm-dev-room/66495#submission…>Submission: To submit a proposal, please create an account on the FOSDEM pentabarf interface<https://penta.fosdem.org/user/new_account>. If you already have an account from previous years, please reuse that. Submit your proposal following FOSDEM23 - Pentabarf 0.4.5<https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM23>, “Create Event”. Please make sure you select “LLVM devroom” as the "Track”. If your talk or tutorial requires a different duration then please request this in the “Duration” field. Please note that while we will try to accommodate the requested duration, there is no guarantee that we will be able to. Presentations will be recorded and streamed. Sending your proposal implies giving permission to be recorded. The deadline for receiving proposals is Sunday December 4th, 2022. Speakers will be notified of acceptance or rejection by December 15th. Please find some advice on what constitutes a good proposal at the end of this CFP. <https://discourse.llvm.org/t/cfp-fosdem-2023-llvm-dev-room/66495#registrati…>Registration FOSDEM does not require any registration and is free of charge. <https://discourse.llvm.org/t/cfp-fosdem-2023-llvm-dev-room/66495#important-…>Important Dates: * December 5th 2022: Deadline for submission of proposals * December 15th 2022: Announcement of acceptance + final schedule * February 4th 2023: Devroom day, in-person in Brussels <https://discourse.llvm.org/t/cfp-fosdem-2023-llvm-dev-room/66495#organizati…>Organization Please use the following Discourse thread to discuss any issues or questions related to submitting a proposal or the organisation of the event: https://discourse.llvm.org/t/cfp-fosdem-2023-llvm-dev-room/66495 <https://discourse.llvm.org/t/cfp-fosdem-2023-llvm-dev-room/66495#guidance-o…>Guidance on writing a proposal for the LLVM Dev Room This is a guide to help you submit a good proposal and increase your chances of your proposal being accepted. If you have never presented at an LLVM meeting, then do not fear this process. We are actively looking for new speakers who are excited about LLVM and helping grow the community through these educational talks! You do not need to be a long time developer to submit a proposal. <https://discourse.llvm.org/t/cfp-fosdem-2023-llvm-dev-room/66495#general-gu…>General Guidelines: * It should be clear from your abstract what your topic is, who your target audience is, and what are the takeaways for attendees. The program committee does not have time to read 10 page papers for each submission. * Talks about the use of an LLVM technology should include details about how LLVM is used and not only be about the resulting application. * Tutorials on “how to use X” in LLVM (or other subproject) are greatly desired and beneficial to many developers. Entry level topics are encouraged as well. * Typically a few paragraphs is sufficient. Best regards, the LLVM @ FOSDEM organisers IMPORTANT NOTICE: The contents of this email and any attachments are confidential and may also be privileged. Call for Participation: Confidential Computing Devroom 2023
by Fritz Alder 14 Nov '22

14 Nov '22

We are happy to announce that the former Hardware-Aided Trusted Computing Devroom has been renamed to Confidential Computing Devroom and will again be held in 2023. You can find the CfP here: https://falder.org/fosdem23-cfp Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions. We are looking forward to seeing you at FOSDEM 2023! Full CfP in text: # FOSDEM 2023 (Hybrid) - Call For Participation : Confidential Computing Devroom (formerly Hardware-Aided Trusted Computing Devroom) Submission deadline: December 2 2022 FOSDEM dates: February 4 & 5 2023 ## About FOSDEM FOSDEM (https://fosdem.org/2023/) is a free event for software developers to meet, share ideas and collaborate. Every year, thousands of developers of free and open source software from all over the world gather at the event in Brussels. In 2023, they will again be able to meet in-person in Brussels. FOSDEM is free to attend. There is no registration. ## Devroom overview and objectives Following the success of the last years' editions ( https://archive.fosdem.org/2022/schedule/track/hardware_aided_trusted_compu… ), we are for the 4th time organizing a devroom devoted to the emerging open source ecosystem around *hardware-based Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs)* which nowadays is also known under the term *Confidential Computing* (CC). Under TEEs, we understand architectures that allow to isolate and attest trusted "enclave" software components running on top of a potentially compromised operating system. Over the last years, all major processor vendors have developed some form of TEE support, e.g., Intel's Software Guard Extensions (SGX) ( https://software.intel.com/content/www/us/en/develop/topics/software-guard-… ) and Trust Domain Extensions (TDX) ( https://software.intel.com/content/www/us/en/develop/articles/intel-trust-d… ), ARM's TrustZone ( https://developer.arm.com/ip-products/security-ip/trustzone ) and upcoming Confidential Compute Architecture (Arm CCA) ( https://developer.arm.com/architectures/architecture-security-features/conf… ), AMD's Secure Encrypted Virtualization (SEV) ( https://developer.amd.com/sev/ ) and upcoming SEV-ES/SEV-SNP extensions, and IBM's Protected Execution Facility (PEF) ( https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/powerpc/ultravisor.html ). Hence, with today's mainstream consumer hardware being increasingly shipped with these advanced trusted computing technologies, this devroom wants to foster discussion on the much-needed open source confidential computing ecosystem amongst industry players, academics, enthusiasts, hobbyists, and project maintainers. ## Desirable topics The devroom's topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Free and open source confidential computing. * An introduction to the existing solutions and the use cases they cover. * Programming frameworks for TEEs. * How to develop free and open source software that can run inside enclaves (e.g., Apache Teaclave, Enarx, Gramine-SGX libOS, Inclavare containers, Intel SGX-SDK, Linux kernel support for SEV/SGX/TDX, Occlum libOS, OpenEnclave SDK, Rust-EDP, SGX-LKL libOS, etc). * New frameworks or framework updates to the community. * Recent challenges (solved or appearing). * Attestation in confidential computing. * FOSS approaches to attestation. * Unifying attestation across different technologies. * Compiler and language support. * Free and open source enclave processor designs (e.g., RISC-V TEEs). * Applying Confidential Computing to the Cloud Native space. * Confidential Computing Deployment. * Challenges and benefits of confidential computing. * Use cases and applications. * TEE-specific attacks and defenses: reverse engineering, side-channels, vulnerabilities, exploits. * Vision: future TEEs (what is missed, proposals, wishes, discussions). * Confidential Computing and trust. * Where is my trust boundary? - Confidential VMs vs Confidential Pods vs Confidential Containers. * Trust and FOSS? What can I trust if I don't trust anyone? ## Old new rules: Back to Brussels but better? For 2023, FOSDEM is once again planning an in-person event. However, it will also be possible to participate remotely. All talks presented live on the campus in Brussels will also be streamed. Additionally, some talks may be pre-recorded and broadcast online using the same matrix platform as in 2021 and 2022. Since we do not want to lose our remote audience that grew over the last years, we will split the confidential computing devroom into two parts, each a half-day: 1. Saturday afternoon: A purely **online** event where pre-recorded talks are followed by a live (online) Q&A. During this first half day we give the stage to existing or new projects in the space of confidential computing that want to present their work to the FOSDEM audience. This online part then also allows people to present at FOSDEM that cannot or want not come to Brussels in-person. 2. Sunday afternoon: We follow that part with the **main (in-person)** event where we focus on exciting and inciting topics in confidential computing. We will try to center this day on community building and attempt to hold some discussions and panel debates here. This in-person part is streamed and accessible to the remote audience but we acknowledge that remote attendees never really get the whole experience or as much say as the live audience when it comes to discussions. In summary, the procedure will be as follows: * The reference time will again be Brussels local lime (CET) ( https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/belgium/brussels ). * This year there are two types of talks: Conventional in-person talks, and pre-recorded talks. * When submitting a proposal you must indicate whether you will be attending the main event in-person in Brussels, or cannot make it to the in-person event and would present via a pre-recording online. All talks will be accompanied by live text-based chat and moderated Q&A and discussion. * Conventional talks will be held at the confidential computing devroom in Brussels *on Sunday afternoon* and live streamed to the remote audience. * Pre-recorded, online, talks will be streamed during the first part of the devroom on *Saturday afternoon*. If your talk is selected, you can expect a recording deadline around January 9 so that we can fix all issues with videos 2 weeks before the event. During the stream of your talk, you must be available online for the Q&A session. * Q&A sessions for both talk formats will be taken live by the speaker, allowing the remote audience to ask questions via the matrix chat platform already used in the last years. We had interesting discussions after the talks of last years, so we hope that the in-person format can give our community a big boost while we still accommodate our remote attendees from all over the world. ## Key dates * Submission deadline: 02 December 2022 * Announcement of selected talks: 07 December 2022 * Deadline for the pre-recorded talks of the online day: Around 09 January 2023 * Conference dates 4 & 5 February 2023 **(hybrid)** * Confidential computing devroom date: * Online part: Saturday 4 February 2023 (afternoon) * In-person part: Sunday 5 February 2023 (afternoon) ## Submit a talk proposal Submissions are required to proceed through the FOSDEM 2023 Pentabarf website ( https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM23 ). If you do not know how to use Pentabarf yet, you can read a beginner's guide here ( https://medium.com/@maartjeme/beginners-guide-to-pentabarf-78808a1ce5bf ). Your submission must include the following information: * Your contact email. * The title (and possible subtitle) of your talk: please be descriptive, as the audience will have to choose to attend your talk out of a listing with ~500 talks from other projects at FOSDEM. * Select "Confidential Computing devroom" as the track. * We anticipate to mostly use the event type "Presentation" and maybe allow one or two "Discussion" style panel debates. * A short abstract of one paragraph. * A longer description if you wish to do so. * Links to related websites / blogs etc. * Please use the submission notes to let us know whether you can do an in-person talk or only a remote pre-recorded talk. Note that the main event is the physical devroom and we strongly encourage you to try to be there if possible. You should target a **talk duration of 20 minutes** with 5 mins of live Q&A (leaves us with 5 mins buffer and change over for talks). ## Contact and organizers If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Fritz Alder (fritz.alder(a)kuleuven.be) or to any of the below co-organizers. * Organizers: Fritz Alder (fritz.alder(a)kuleuven.be) Fabiano Fidencio (fabiano.fidencio(a)intel.com) Jo Van Bulck (jo.vanbulck(a)cs.kuleuven.be) Sergio Lopez (slp(a)redhat.com) * Devroom URL on the FOSDEM website: <https://fosdem.org/2023/schedule/track/confidential_computing/>

Please make sure to include the following items: - Title and subtitle of your talk - Learning outcome(s) or key takeaways - 5 lines abstract of your presentation - Full description of your presentation - Relevant links to websites, blogs, documentation, and other resources - Email in your speaker profile We are open to any topic related to JavaScript but we are mostly interested in topics revolving around - Core language (ES5, ES6, ES7, closure, scope, etc) - Tooling (Babel, packing, code quality, etc) - SPWAs and frameworks (React, ReactNative, Vue, Angular, shadow DOM, etc) - New domain-specific frameworks (machine learning, XR, IoT, etc) - Interaction with other languages (EMScriptem, WASM, etc) - Wildcard, surprise us! Please note that for this year unfortunately we do not offer any kind of funding for the speakers. Please note that all talks will be streamed live, recorded, and made available through the FOSDEM archives. By sending in your proposal you agree to these terms. Note that recordings will be published under the same license as all other FOSDEM content (cc-by). Looking forward to reading your proposals and making a great devroom together! Wanna get inspired? FOSDEM 2023 - Declarative and Minimalistic Computing - Call for Participation
by Manolis Ragkousis 13 Nov '22

13 Nov '22

We are excited to announce a devroom on Declarative and Minimalistic Computing at FOSDEM on 4th of February, 2023! FOSDEM is one of the most important free software conferences and is hosted annually at Université libre de Bruxelles in Brussels, Belgium. This year FOSDEM will be a physical conference. Talks will be done in person and we will also have virtual talks! We accept talks from languages that attempt to minimize use of hardware and software while trying to make systems simpler, more robust and more secure. If you are working on improving today's systems taking declarative/minimalistic approaches feel free to submit a talk proposal. Examples include the Scheme/Lisp family of programmings languages. In past editions, this devroom has received presentations from a varied number of language communities, including Forth, Guile, Lua, Nim, Racket, Raku and Tcl as well as several experimental projects that push minimalism in new directions. Minimalism and declarative programming are two important topics for this devroom. Minimalism matters. Minimalism allows for smaller systems that take less resources and consume less energy. More importantly, free and open source minimalism allows for secure systems that are easy to understand. Declarative programming is a programming paradigm that expresses the logic of a computation without describing its control flow. Many languages that apply this style attempt to minimize or eliminate side effects by describing what the program must accomplish in terms of the problem domain, rather than describe how to accomplish it as a sequence of the programming language primitives. Finally, in this year's virtual conference we will honour the late Professor [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Ritchie Dennis Ritchie] the creator of the C programming language and the Unix operating system. C was designed as a minimal language that reflects the underlying CPU architecture closely, i.e., a high-level assembler. C is very popular today and the Linux kernel is almost completely written in C. In this edition we will also invite speakers that are working on new projects and minimalistic languages in the spirit of C. We want to invite you to submit a talk on declarative and minimalistic computing that fits that description. We are especially happy to receive talk submissions from members of groups underrepresented in free software. If you have something you’d like to share with your fellow developers, please E-mail us! Talks considered for the devroom will have to be entered in - https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM23 The deadline for submission is December 3rd. If you have a FOSDEM pentabarf account from a previous year, please use that account. Otherwise add one on https://penta.fosdem.org/user/new_account. Reach out to pjotr.public456(a)thebird.nl or manolis837(a)gmail.com if you run into any trouble. When submitting your talk make doubly sure to select "Declarative and Minimalistic Computing devroom" as track (if you don't we won't find it), and include the following information: * The title and subtitle of your talk * A short abstract of one paragraph * A longer description if you wish to do so * Links to related websites/blogs etc To see what a final talk looks like see https://archive.fosdem.org/2021/schedule/event/gnumes/ Let's make this a fun day! = Organizers = Pjotr Prins, Manolis Ragkousis, Jonhathan McHugh, Bonface Munyoki, Arun Isaac, Ludovic Courtès, Amirouche Boubekki, Hisham Muhammad, Jan Nieuwenhuizen, Ricardo Wurmus, Alex Sassmannshausen, William Byrd, Oliver Propst, Efraim Flashner, Julien Lepiller = Code of conduct = - https://fosdem.org/2023/practical/conduct/ = Original proposal = - https://libreplanet.org/wiki/FOSDEM2023-devroom-proposal = Important dates: = - Dec 3rd 2022: submission deadline for talk proposals - Dec 15th 2022: announcement of the final schedule - Feb 4th 2023: FOSDEM! https://libreplanet.org/wiki/FOSDEM2023-devroom-declarative-and-minimalisti…

FOSDEM 2023 Call for Presentations
by Alasdair G Kergon 13 Nov '22

13 Nov '22

FOSDEM is now ready to accept presentation proposals. Please refer to https://fosdem.org/2023/news/2022-11-13-call-for-presentations/ for the details. Assuming the current health landscape persists, most will be presented in-person in Brussels, but we do still have provision for some to be pre-recorded using the same system as we used for the last two editions. This year's selection of developer rooms is listed at https://fosdem.org/2023/news/2022-11-07-accepted-developer-rooms/ Their calls for presentations will be added over the next few days and sent to this mailing list, so anticipate a lot of messages shortly. Please use program(a)fosdem.org if you need to contact us about any of this, or info(a)fosdem.org for more general matters. Alasdair
