by Brian Exelbierd 03 Nov '17

03 Nov '17

The Distributions devroom will take place Sunday 4 February 2018 at FOSDEM, in Brussels, Belgium at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. For this year's distributions devroom, we want to focus on the ways that distribution technologies can be leveraged to allow for easier creation of a multi-verse of artifacts from single source trees. We also want to continue to highlight the huge efforts being made in shared environments around Build/Test/Release cycles. We welcome submissions targeted at contributors interested in issues unique to distributions, especially in the following topics: - Distribution and Community collaborations, eg: how does code flow from developers to end users across communities, ensuring trust and code audibility - Automating building software for redistribution to minimize human involvement, eg: bots that branch and build software, bots that participate as team members extending human involvement - Cross-distribution collaboration on common issues, eg: content distribution, infrastructure, and documentation - Growing distribution communities, eg: onboarding new users, helping new contributors learn community values and technology, increasing contributor technical skills, recognizing and rewarding contribution - Principals of Rolling Releases, Long Term Supported Releases (LTS), Feature gated releases, and calendar releases - Distribution construction, installation, deployment, packaging and content management - Balancing new code and active upstreams verus security updates, back porting and minimization of user breaking changes - Delivering architecture independent software universally across architectures within the confines of distribution systems - Effectively communicating the difference in experience across architectures for developers, packagers, and users - Working with vendors and including them in the community - The future of distributions, emerging trends and evolving user demands from the idea of a platform Ideal submissions are actionable and opinionated. Open Document Editors DevRoom - Call for Paper FOSDEM 2018
by Italo Vignoli 31 Oct '17

31 Oct '17

FOSDEM is one of the largest gatherings of Free Software contributors in the world and happens each year in Brussels (Belgium) at the ULB Campus Solbosch. In 2018, it will be held on Saturday, February 3, and Sunday, February 4. As usual, the Open Document Editors DevRoom will be jointly organized by Apache OpenOffice and LibreOffice, on Saturday, February 3 (from 10:30AM to 6:30PM, room AW1.120). The shared devroom gives every project in this area a chance to present ODF related developments and innovations. We are now inviting proposals for talks about Open Document Editors or the ODF standard document format, on topics such as code, localization, QA, UX, extensions, tools and adoption related cases. This is a unique opportunity to show new ideas and developments to a wide technical audience. Please do keep in mind, though, that product pitches are not allowed at FOSDEM. Length of talks should be limited to a maximum of 30 minutes, as we would like to have questions after each presentation, and to fit as many presenters as possible in the schedule. Exceptions must be explicitly requested and justified. You may be assigned LESS time than you request. All submissions have to be made in the Pentabarf event planning tool: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM18. While filing your proposal, please provide the title of your talk, a short abstract (one or two paragraphs), some information about yourself (name, bio and photo, but please do remember that your profile might be already stored at Pentabarf). To submit your talk, click on “Create Event”, then make sure to select the “Open Document Editors” devroom as the “Track”. Otherwise, your talk will not be even considered for any devroom at all. If you already have a Pentabarf account from a previous year, even if your talk was not accepted, please reuse it. Create an account if, and only if, you don’t have one from a previous year. If you have any issues with Pentabarf, please contact ode-devroom-manager(a)fosdem.org. The deadline is Monday, December 4th, 2017. Accepted speakers will be notified by Monday, December 11th, 2017. The schedule will be published before Friday, December 15, 2017. Recording Permission The talks in the Open Document Editors DevRoom will be audio and video recorded, and possibly streamed live too. In the “Submission notes” field, please indicate that you agree to have your presentation recorded and published under the same license as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY). For example: “If my speech is accepted for FOSDEM, I hereby agree to be recorded and to have recordings - including slides and other presentation related documents - published under the Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) 4.0 International License. Sincerely, Name”. -- Italo Vignoli - Marketing & PR email italo.vignoli(a)documentfoundation.org mobile/signal +39.348.5653829 - skype italovignoli hangout/jabber italo.vignoli(a)gmail.com The Document Foundation, Kurfürstendamm 188, 10707 Berlin, DE Gemeinnützige rechtsfähige Stiftung des bürgerlichen Rechts Legal details: http://www.documentfoundation.org/imprint GPG Key ID - 0xAAB8D5C0 DB75 1534 3FD0 EA5F 56B5 FDA6 DE82 934C AAB8 D5C0

CfP - Ada Developer Room at FOSDEM 2018, Brussels, Belgium
by Dirk Craeynest 26 Oct '17

26 Oct '17

----------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Presentations 8th Ada Developer Room at FOSDEM 2018 Saturday 3 February 2018, Brussels, Belgium http://www.cs.kuleuven.be/~dirk/ada-belgium/events/18/180203-fosdem.html Organized in cooperation with Ada-Europe ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Ada-Belgium [1] is pleased to announce that there will be a one-day Ada Developer Room on Saturday 3 February 2018 at FOSDEM 2018 in Brussels, Belgium. This Ada DevRoom is once more organized in cooperation with Ada-Europe [2]. General Information ------------------- FOSDEM [3], the Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting, is a free and non-commercial two-day weekend event organized early each year in Brussels, Belgium. It is highly developer-oriented and brings together 8000+ participants from all over the world. No registration is necessary. The goal is to provide open source developers and communities a place to meet with other developers and projects, to be informed about the latest developments in the open source world, to attend interesting talks and presentations on various topics by open source project leaders and committers, and to promote the development and the benefits of open source solutions. Ada Programming Language and Technology --------------------------------------- Awareness of safety and security issues in software systems is increasing. Multi-core platforms are now abundant. These are some of the reasons that the Ada programming language and technology attracts more and more attention, among others due to Ada's support for programming by contract and for multi-core targets. The Ada 2012 language definition was approved and published by ISO in December 2012, updated early 2016, and work on new features for the next revision is ongoing. More and more tools are available, many are open source, including for small and recent platforms. Interest keeps increasing, also in the open source community, and many exciting projects started. Ada Developer Room ------------------ FOSDEM is an ideal fit for Ada developers to meet. On the one hand, it gives the general open source community an opportunity to see what is happening in the Ada community and how Ada technology can help to produce reliable and efficient open source software. On the other hand, it gives open source Ada projects an opportunity to present themselves, get feedback and ideas, and attract participants to their project and collaboration between projects. At previous FOSDEM events, Ada-Belgium has organized very well attended Ada Developer Rooms, offering a full day program in 2006 [4], a two-day program in 2009 [5], and full day programs in 2012 [6], 2013 [7], 2014 [8], 2015 [9], and 2016 [10]. An important goal is to present exciting Ada technology and projects also to people outside the traditional Ada community. Our proposal for another dedicated Ada DevRoom was accepted, and now work continues to prepare the detailed program. We most probably will have a total of 8 schedulable hours between 11:00 and 19:00 in a room which accommodates 76 participants. More information will be posted on the dedicated web-page on the Ada-Belgium site [11], and final announcements will of course also be sent to various forums, lists and newsgroups. Call for Presentations ---------------------- We would like to schedule technical presentations, tutorials, demos, live performances, project status reports, discussions, etc, in the Ada Developer Room. Ada-Belgium calls on you to: - inform us at ada-belgium-board(a)cs.kuleuven.be about specific presentations you would like to hear in this Ada DevRoom; - for bonus points, subscribe to the Ada-FOSDEM mailing list [12] to discuss and help organize the details; - for more bonus points, be a speaker: the Ada-FOSDEM mailing list is the place to be! Do you have a talk you want to give? Do you have a project you would like to present? Would you like to get more people involved with your project? We're inviting proposals that are related to Ada software development, and include a technical oriented discussion. You're not limited to slide presentations, of course. Be creative. Propose something fun to share with people so they might feel some of your enthusiasm for Ada! Speaking slots are 20 or 45 minutes, plus 5 minutes for Q&A. Depending on interest, we might also have a session with lightning presentations (e.g. 5 minutes each). Note that all talks will be streamed live (audio+video) and recorded, for remote as well as later viewing of talks, and so that people can watch streams in the hallways when rooms are full. By submitting a proposal, you agree to being recorded and streamed, and agree the content of your talk will be published under the same license as all FOSDEM content, a Creative Commons (CC-BY) license. Submission Guidelines --------------------- Subscribe to the Ada-FOSDEM mailing list [12], and submit your proposal there. If needed, feel free to contact us at ada-belgium-board(a)cs.kuleuven.be. Please include: - your name, affiliation, contact info; - the title of your talk (be descriptive and creative); - a short descriptive and attractive abstract; - potentially pointers to more information; - a short bio and photo. See programs of previous Ada DevRooms (URLs below) for presentation examples, as well as for the kind of info we need. We'd like to put together a draft schedule by early December. So, please act ASAP, and definitely by November 26, 2017 at the latest. We look forward to lots of feedback and proposals! Greetings everyone, Hereby I am announcing the Internet of Things devroom CFP. The CFP can be found here as well: https://github.com/maximevince/IoT-devroom-fosdem FOSDEM Internet of Things devroom In February 2018, we're organizing the fifth FOSDEM devroom for the Internet of Things. We're now calling for proposals. Do you have an interesting project you'd like to present to more than 5,000 free and open source developers? Introduction FOSDEM (Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting) is a non-commercial, volunteer organized European event centered around free and open source software development. It is aimed at developers and anyone interested in the free and open source software movement. It aims to enable developers to meet and to promote the awareness and use of free and open source software. For general news and discussion on FOSDEM, please sign-up to the fosdem(a)lists.fosdem.org mailing list at: https://lists.fosdem.org/listinfo. FOSDEM is held annually during the first weekend of February at the Université Libre de Bruxelles Solbosch campus, situated in the southeast of Brussels, Belgium and easily reachable by public transport from Brussels-Central railway station. The FOSDEM devrooms are whole-day tracks focused on one topic, aimed at developers. For the the third time, we're organizing an Internet of Things devroom at FOSDEM. As Helen Duce said, "We have a clear vision: to create a world where every object — from jumbo jets to sewing needles — is linked to the Internet." Thousands of keen developers come to FOSDEM. There's no better event in Europe for reaching out to free and open source developers. Date The IoT devroom will be on Sunday 4th February, 2018. How to Submit a Proposal If you have an IoT project you'd like to present, please submit it via FOSDEM's Pentabarf web tool. You will create an account (if you don't have one from a previous year), and select the "Internet of Things devroom" as the track. Every submission received will be reviewed and we’ll then make a selection from all the submitted proposals. We're looking for talks that cover one or more of the following topics: FOSS solutions for machine-to-machine communication on small embedded devices. Distributed FOSS applications in any field of interest for autonomous/self-controlled devices, (e.g. domotics, automotive, etc. Presentation of embedded devices with one or more possibilities to join a network. Infrastructure related (TCP/IP, mesh networking, message queuing, cross-layer solutions). Real-life problematics and their solution (Cost of maintenance, power management, reachability). Interoperability solutions for heterogeneous applications, devices, protocols, media. All presentations must be fully FOSS, and related to software development. The devroom will last one day, approx from 10.30 until 18:00. Talks will last 25 minutes each, starting on the hour, with a 5-minute break between talks. There will be no break for lunch. Speakers should respect the following talk format: a five to ten minute demo (live demo preferred over pre-recorded), followed by five to ten minutes of explanation, and then five minutes for Q&A with the audience. Make sure you stick to your 25 minute time slot. All talks are recorded and streamed live, and by submitting a talk you agree to this. We want to make this devroom as interesting and diverse as possible, which means we will favor talks that contrast each other. The deadline for submissions is December 1st. If you submit late, your talk may still be considered but will have to be exceptionally interesting. The program will be finalized by December 30th.
