If you can do either 30 or 45 minutes, please let us know! * Submission deadline is 27 November 2017 and accepted speakers will be notified by 11 December 2017 * If you need to get in touch with the organizers or program committee of the Community DevRoom, email us at community-devroom(a)lists.fosdem.org == In more detail == We are happy to let everyone know that the Community DevRoom will be held this year at the FOSDEM Conference. FOSDEM is the premier free and open source software event in Europe, taking place in Brussels from 3-4 February at the Université libre de Bruxelles. You can learn more about the conference at https://fosdem.org. The Community DevRoom will take place on Saturday, 3 February 2018. The purpose of the devroom is to provide concrete, useful advice on how to best enable contributors to be successful, so more FOSS software gets written. == Why This DevRoom == Our goals in running this DevRoom are to: * Connect folks interested in nurturing their communities with one another so they can share knowledge during and long after FOSDEM * Educate those who are primarily software developers on community-oriented topics that are vital in the process of software development, e.g. effective collaboration * Provide concrete advice on dealing with squishy human problems == Talk Topics == We are seeking proposals on all aspects of creating and nurturing communities for free software projects. Please submit a proposal on any topic of your choice, but here are some suggestions to help get your creativity engaged: 1) Balancing corporate and community interests How can you create a healthy and active community while still meeting the needs of your employer? Are their best practice strategies for building community around a corporate backed open source project? How can you maintain an open dialog with your users and/or contributors when you have the need to keep company business confidential? Is it even possible to build an authentic community around a company-based open source project? 2) Compensating volunteers Is this important? How is it done well? Should we discourage people from “working for free”? How much value does open source work have in finding employment? Increasing one’s salary? For one’s professional development? For plain old personal gratification? Has the balance of what people get out of participating in free software projects shifted over time as FOSS has become more mainstream? If there has been a shift, is it good, bad, neutral? 3) Career progression for community oriented professionals How do you level up as a community manager? Developer Advocate? What skills do you need to best serve your community and how do you acquire them? How do we explain what we do all day so people value this work? 4) Understand and revitalizing mature communities How do mature communities (re)gather momentum? Is there a time to call a community “done, purpose served”? Is it at the same time as a particular code base around a free software project becomes less popular? What are some of the lessons learned that mature communities can share with newer project communities? Should we really just get off your lawn? 5) Conflict resolution How do we continue working well together when there are conflicts? Is there a difference in how types of conflicts best get resolved, e.g. ”this code is terrible” vs. “we should have a contributor agreement”? We are especially interested in how tos / success stories from projects that have weathered conflict. Again, these are just suggestions. We welcome proposals on any aspect of community building! == Preparing Your Submission & Deadlines == === Length of Presentation === We are looking for talk submissions between 30 and 45 minutes in length, including time for Q&A. In general, we are hoping to accept as many talks as possible so we would really appreciate it if you could make all of your remarks in 30 minutes - our DevRoom is only a single day - but if you need longer just let us know. === Anything Extra You Would Like Us to Know === Beyond giving us your speaker bio and paper abstract, make sure to let us know anything else you’d like to as part of your submission. Some folks like to share their Twitter handles, others like to make sure we can take a look at their GitHub activity history - whatever works for you. We especially welcome videos of you speaking elsewhere, or even just a list of talks you have done previously. First time speakers are, of course, welcome! === Submission Instructions === Submit your talk abstract(s) via FOSDEM’s Pentabarf paper submission system. Pentabarf Submission URL: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM18 == Key Dates == * CFP opens 10 October 2017 * Proposals due in Pentabarf 27 November 2017 * Speakers notified by 11 December 2017 * DevRoom takes place 3 February 2018 at FOSDEM If you have any questions, please let us know! FOSDEM'18 HPC, Big Data, and Data Science Devroom Call for Participation
by Kenneth Hoste 12 Oct '17

12 Oct '17

FOSDEM'18 HPC, Big Data, and Data Science Devroom Call for Participation Sunday, February 4th, 2018, Brussels, Belgium # Overview We are proud to announce the 3rd edition of the HPC, Big Data and Data Science devroom, co-located with FOSDEM 2018. FOSDEM is an annual conference about free and open source software, attended by over 5000 developers and open-source enthusiasts from all over the world. This devroom is organised by representatives from the HPC and Big Data communities, who are joining forces to bring both communities together. High Performance Computing (HPC) and Big Data are two important approaches to scientific computing. HPC typically deals with smaller, highly structured data sets and huge amounts of computation while Big Data, not surprisingly, deals with gigantic, unstructured data sets and focuses on the I/O bottlenecks. With the Big Data trend unlocking access to an unprecedented amount of data, Data Science has emerged to tackle the problem of creating processes and approaches to extracting knowledge or insights from these data sets. Machine learning and predictive analytics algorithms have joined the family of more traditional HPC algorithms and are pushing the requirements of cluster and data scalability. Free and Open Source communities have been the foundation of the HPC and Big Data communities for some time. In the HPC community, it should be no surprise that 498 of the Top500 supercomputers in the world run Linux. On the Big Data side, the Hadoop ecosystem has had a tremendous amount of Open Source contributions from a wide range of organizations coming together under the Apache Software Foundation. Our goal is to bring the communities together, share expertise, learn how we can benefit from each other’s work and foster further joint research and collaboration. We welcome talks about Free and Open Source solutions to the challenges presented by large scale computing, data management and data analysis. The devroom will take place on Sunday, February 4th, 2018, at ULB (Campus Solbosch), in Brussels, Belgium. Join us to enjoy a full day of talks, demos and interesting discussions on open-source HPC, Big Data and Data Science. Sounds interesting? Submit your talk proposal below and see you in Brussels! # Topics Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: Architecture and design of High Performance Computing (HPC) and Big Data systems Architecture and design of Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) and data acquisition pipelines Data security and governance Tools and technologies related to HPC and computational science, for example: Multithreading (OpenMP, etc.) Distributed computing (MPI, etc.) GPGPU computing (OpenCL, OpenACC, etc.) Parallel filesystems and storage Large-scale performance analysis and debugging Computational paradigms for Big Data systems MapReduce engines Streaming engines SQL engines Dataflow engines Emerging hardware trends of large scale clusters Large scale memory pooling High-speed interconnects ARM cluster architecture System administration of HPC and Big Data clusters User support tools Machine learning libraries and tools Scientific software applications, tools and libraries (across all scientific domains) Big Data platforms, extensions to existing systems, libraries, APIs Experience reports on using Big Data systems, for example: Large-scale deployments Development and configuration issues Tuning and performance tips and lessons learned Interesting Big Data use-cases and applications Comparative analysis of existing systems, evaluation results, performance studies Interdisciplinary HPC/Big Data use-cases, for example: Applications using both HPC and Big Data technologies Integration issues Open research problems on the convergence of HPC and Big Data Running MPI jobs on Big Data clusters and vice-versa # Submission We invite presenters to submit talk proposals to present high-quality work with sufficient background material to be clear to the HPC, Big Data, and/or Data Science communities. Talk proposals should be submitted through the FOSDEM Pentabarf server. Submissions must include: Abstract Session type Session length Expected prior knowledge / intended audience Speaker bio Links to code / slides / material for the talk (optional) Links to previous talks by the speaker Our intention is to have a full day of talks of about 20 minutes each, with an additional 5 minutes for questions by attendees. We would also like to note: Talks will be streamed live and will be recorded. By submitting a session, speakers agree to being recorded and having their talk made available. All accepted talks will be about (using) free and open source software. We highly discourage “marketing” talks. Submit here: <https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM18> When submitting your talk in Pentabarf, make sure to select the ‘HPC, Big Data, and Data Science Devroom’ as the ‘Track’. If you already have a Pentabarf account from a previous FOSDEM edition, please reuse it. Create an account if, and only if, you don’t have one from a previous year. If you do not want to give a talk yourself, you may still send suggestions for what else you would like to see, or do in the devroom. Please send your suggestions to the mailing list. The deadline for your proposal is on December 8. Make sure to include the following in your proposal: * Title of your talk (will be printed in the FOSDEM booklet) * Your full name (will be printed in the FOSDEM booklet) * A short abstract (one or two paragraphs) * Duration of your talk (please, at least 25 and no longer than 45 min) The official devroom schedule (along with the accepted talks) will be announced on December the 15th on the devroom's mailing list and the speakers will be notified via e-mail. The schedule will also be published on the FOSDEM website. About FOSDEM FOSDEM is a two-day event organised by volunteers to promote the widespread use of free and open source software. Taking place in the beautiful city of Brussels (Belgium), FOSDEM is widely recognised as the best such conference in Europe. FOSDEM covers a wide spectrum of free and open source software projects, and offers a platform for people to collaborate. To this end, FOSDEM has set up developer rooms (devrooms) with network/internet connectivity and projectors where teams can meet and showcase their projects. Devrooms are a place for teams to discuss, hack and publicly present latest directions, lightning talks, news and discussions. Besides developer rooms, FOSDEM also offers main tracks, lightning talks, certification exams and project stands. Every year, FOSDEM hosts more than 5000 developers at the ULB Solbosch campus. Participation and attendance is totally free, though the organisers gratefully accept donations and sponsorship. No registration necessary. About the devroom Since the first Microkernel devroom in 2012 this devroom has been part of each following FOSDEM. By now it has become a somewhat institutionalized tradition for the microkernel community to meet there; to this date over a dozen projects have participated in one way or another. Each of the projects face similar challenges but come up with partially different solutions. Therefore, the goal of the Microkernel devroom is to bring the various projects together, let them exchange ideas, cross-pollinate and socialize. Social events It also has become a habit that the microkernel projects dine together somewhere in downtown Brussels after the devroom closes. The year 2018 will not be any different, so there is going to be a microkernel family dinner on Saturday night. The exact location and time will be specified later. Consult the FOSDEM web and other projects for additional social events such as the famous FOSDEM-organized Friday Beer Event and the FOSDEM-arranged free sightseeing tours for spouses. Important dates recap * 08.12.2017: Deadline for submissions * 15.12.2017: Schedule published and speakers notified of acceptance * 03.02.2018: The devroom takes places Links [1] http://fosdem.org/ [2] https://fosdem.org/2018/practical/transportation/ [3] https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM18 [4] https://lists.fosdem.org/listinfo/microkernel-devroom See you all at FOSDEM!

FOSDEM 2018: SDR Track CfP
by Martin Braun 07 Oct '17

07 Oct '17

Dear friends and fans of software defined radio and free/open source radio topics in general, next year's FOSDEM (the free and open source developer's meeting in Brussels, Europe) will, once again, feature a track on Software Defined Radio and other radio-related topics. Therefore, we invite developers and users from the free software radio community to join us for this track and present your talks or demos. Software Radio has become an important tool to allow anyone access the EM spectrum. Using free software radio libraries and applications and cheap hardware, anyone can now start hacking on wireless communications, remote sensing, radar or other applications. At FOSDEM, we hope to network all these projects and improve collaboration, bring new ideas forward and get more people involved. The track's web site resides at: http://gnuradio.org/redmine/projects/gnuradio/wiki/FOSDEM Here, we will publish updates and announcements. The final schedule will be available through Pentabarf and the official FOSDEM website. ** Submit your presentations To suggest a talk, go to https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM18 and follow the instructions (you need an account, but can use your account from last year if you have one). You need to create an 'Event'; make sure it's in the Software Defined Radio track! Lengths aren't fixed, but give a realistic estimate and please don't exceed 30 minutes unless you have something special planned (in that case, contact one of us). Also, don't forget to include time for Q&A. We will typically go for 30-minute slots -- shorter talks, unless they're really short, usually tend to screw up the schedule too much. You aren't limited to slide presentations, of course. Be creative. However, FOSDEM is an open source conference, therefore we ask you to stay clear of marketing presentations. We like nitty-gritty technical stuff. Here's a list of topics that will most likely be included: - SDR Frameworks + Tools - Wireless security - Radio hardware - Ham radio related topics - Telecommunications - Random fun wireless hacks We will reserve time for interactiveness, it won't all be talks. ** Important Dates FOSDEM is February 3rd and 4th, 2018. * December 8th 2017: Submission Deadline * December 18th 2017: Announcement of final schedule * February 3rd 2018: SDR Track (Saturday) These dates are not set in stone. However, the least years we were always full to the brim with presentations, so if you want to present, please make sure to submit your abstracts soon! ** Steering Committee The track committee consists of: * Phil "Crofton" Balister (OpenEmbedded / OpenSDR) * Martin "mbr0wn" Braun (GNU Radio) * Sylvain "tnt" Munaut (OsmoCom) Hope to hear from you soon! And please forward this announcement. Martin

requirement to start a devroom
by Kristoff 08 Jul '17

08 Jul '17

Hi, Dyring fosdem 2017, the amateur-radio society of Belgium has an infobooth to promote amateur-radio at fosdem. (thanks again to the people at fosdem to allow us to do this). I have had an idea in the back of my mind for some time to go a little bit further in this and look at the possiblity to set up a (small) devroom for amateur-radio related topics and open-source/free software and hardware. Some questions (before I start talking to people): Is there still possible to start a new devroom? What are the requirements to set up a devroom at fosdem? How many talks are needed for a devroom? Thanks in advance, Cheerio! Kr. Bonne.
