by FOSDEM RTC Team 24 Oct '16

24 Oct '16

FOSDEM is one of the world's premier meetings of free software developers, with over five thousand people attending each year. FOSDEM 2017 takes place 4-5 February 2017 in Brussels, Belgium. https://fosdem.org This email contains information about: - Real-Time communications dev-room and lounge, - speaking opportunities, - volunteering in the dev-room and lounge, - related events around FOSDEM, including the XMPP summit, - social events (the legendary FOSDEM Beer Night and Saturday night dinners provide endless networking opportunities), - the Planet aggregation sites for RTC blogs Call for participation - Real Time Communications (RTC) ======================================================= The Real-Time dev-room and Real-Time lounge is about all things involving real-time communication, including: XMPP, SIP, WebRTC, telephony, mobile VoIP, codecs, peer-to-peer, privacy and encryption. The dev-room is a successor to the previous XMPP and telephony dev-rooms. We are looking for speakers for the dev-room and volunteers and participants for the tables in the Real-Time lounge. The dev-room is only on Saturday, 4 February 2017. The lounge will be present for both days. To discuss the dev-room and lounge, please join the FSFE-sponsored Free RTC mailing list: https://lists.fsfe.org/mailman/listinfo/free-rtc To be kept aware of major developments in Free RTC, without being on the discussion list, please join the Free-RTC Announce list: http://lists.freertc.org/mailman/listinfo/announce Speaking opportunities ---------------------- Note: if you used FOSDEM Pentabarf before, please use the same account/username Real-Time Communications dev-room: deadline 23:59 UTC on 17 November. Please use the Pentabarf system to submit a talk proposal for the dev-room. On the "General" tab, please look for the "Track" option and choose "Real-Time devroom". https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM17/ Other dev-rooms and lightning talks: some speakers may find their topic is in the scope of more than one dev-room. It is encouraged to apply to more than one dev-room and also consider proposing a lightning talk, but please be kind enough to tell us if you do this by filling out the notes in the form. You can find the full list of dev-rooms at https://www.fosdem.org/2017/schedule/tracks/ and apply for a lightning talk at https://fosdem.org/submit Main track: the deadline for main track presentations is 23:59 UTC 31 October. Leading developers in the Real-Time Communications field are encouraged to consider submitting a presentation to the main track at https://fosdem.org/submit First-time speaking? -------------------- FOSDEM dev-rooms are a welcoming environment for people who have never given a talk before. Please feel free to contact the dev-room administrators personally if you would like to ask any questions about it. Submission guidelines --------------------- The Pentabarf system will ask for many of the essential details. Please remember to re-use your account from previous years if you have one. In the "Submission notes", please tell us about: - the purpose of your talk - any other talk applications (dev-rooms, lightning talks, main track) - availability constraints and special needs You can use HTML and links in your bio, abstract and description. If you maintain a blog, please consider providing us with the URL of a feed with posts tagged for your RTC-related work. We will be looking for relevance to the conference and dev-room themes, presentations aimed at developers of free and open source software about RTC-related topics. Please feel free to suggest a duration between 20 minutes and 55 minutes but note that the final decision on talk durations will be made by the dev-room administrators. As the two previous dev-rooms have been combined into one, we may decide to give shorter slots than in previous years so that more speakers can participate. Please note FOSDEM aims to record and live-stream all talks. The CC-BY license is used. Volunteers needed ================= To make the dev-room and lounge run successfully, we are looking for volunteers: - FOSDEM provides video recording equipment and live streaming, volunteers are needed to assist in this - organizing one or more restaurant bookings (dependending upon number of participants) for the evening of Saturday, 4 February - participation in the Real-Time lounge - helping attract sponsorship funds for the dev-room to pay for the Saturday night dinner and any other expenses - circulating this Call for Participation to other mailing lists See the mailing list discussion for more details about volunteering: https://lists.fsfe.org/pipermail/free-rtc/2016-October/000285.html Related events - XMPP and RTC summits ===================================== The XMPP Standards Foundation (XSF) has traditionally held a summit in the days before FOSDEM. There is discussion about a similar summit taking place on 2 and 3 February 2017 http://wiki.xmpp.org/web/Summit_21 - please join the mailing list for details: http://mail.jabber.org/mailman/listinfo/summit We are also considering a more general RTC or telephony summit, potentially in collaboration with the XMPP summit. Please join the Free-RTC mailing list and send an email if you would be interested in participating, sponsoring or hosting such an event. Social events and dinners ========================= The traditional FOSDEM beer night occurs on Friday, 3 February. On Saturday night, there are usually dinners associated with each of the dev-rooms. Most restaurants in Brussels are not so large so these dinners have space constraints and reservations are essential. Please subscribe to the Free-RTC mailing list for further details about the Saturday night dinner options and how you can register for a seat: https://lists.fsfe.org/mailman/listinfo/free-rtc Spread the word and discuss =========================== If you know of any mailing lists where this CfP would be relevant, please forward this email. If this dev-room excites you, please blog or microblog about it, especially if you are submitting a talk. Hi all, I’ve missed this year’s devroom proposals submission. But was thrilled to see someone else took the initiative and that the Open Media devroom is still planned to be held (https://fosdem.org/2017/schedule/track/open_media/) I was wondering who the devroom manager is, I’d be happy to help organize. Thanks! - Zohar

by Brian Proffitt 19 Oct '16

19 Oct '16

On behalf of oVirt and the Xen Project, we are excited to announce that the call for proposals is now open for the Virtualization & IaaS devroom at the upcoming FOSDEM 2017, to be hosted on February 4, 2017. This year will mark FOSDEM’s 17th anniversary as one of the longest-running free and open source software developer events, attracting thousands of developers and users from all over the world. FOSDEM will be held once again in Brussels, Belgium, on February 4 & 5, 2017. This devroom is a collaborative effort, and is organized by dedicated folks from projects such as OpenStack, Xen Project, Mesos, oVirt, QEMU, and Foreman. We would like to invite all those who are involved in these fields to submit your proposals by November 18th, 2016. About the Devroom The Virtualization & IaaS devroom will feature session topics such as open source hypervisors and virtual machine managers such as Xen Project, KVM, bhyve, and VirtualBox, and Infrastructure-as-a-Service projects such as Apache CloudStack, OpenStack, oVirt, QEMU, OpenNebula, and Ganeti. This devroom will host presentations that focus on topics of shared interest, such as KVM; libvirt; shared storage; virtualized networking; cloud security; clustering and high availability; interfacing with multiple hypervisors; hyperconverged deployments; and scaling across hundreds or thousands of servers. Presentations in this devroom will be aimed at developers working on these platforms who are looking to collaborate and improve shared infrastructure or solve common problems. We seek topics that encourage dialog between projects and continued work post-FOSDEM. Important Dates Submission deadline: 18 November 2016 Acceptance notifications: 04 December 2016 Final schedule announcement: 11 December 2016 Devroom: 04 February 2017 (one day) Submit Your Proposal All submissions must be made via the Pentabarf event planning site[1]. If you have not used Pentabarf before, you will need to create an account. If you submitted proposals for FOSDEM in previous years, you can use your existing account. After creating the account, select Create Event to start the submission process. Make sure to select Virtualisation and IaaS devroom from the Track list. Please fill out all the required fields, and provide a meaningful abstract and description of your proposed session. Submission Guidelines We expect more proposals than we can possibly accept, so it is vitally important that you submit your proposal on or before the deadline. Late submissions are unlikely to be considered. All presentation slots are 45 minutes, with 35 minutes planned for presentations, and 10 minutes for Q&A. All presentations will be recorded and made available under Creative Commons licenses. In the Submission notes field, please indicate that you agree that your presentation will be licensed under the CC-By-SA-4.0 or CC-By-4.0 license and that you agree to have your presentation recorded. For example: "If my presentation is accepted for FOSDEM, I hereby agree to license all recordings, slides, and other associated materials under the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 4.0 International License. Sincerely, <NAME>." In the Submission notes field, please also confirm that if your talk is accepted, you will be able to attend FOSDEM and deliver your presentation. We will not consider proposals from prospective speakers who are unsure whether they will be able to secure funds for travel and lodging to attend FOSDEM. (Sadly, we are not able to offer travel funding for prospective speakers.) Speaker Mentoring Program As a part of the rising efforts to grow our communities and encourage a diverse and inclusive conference ecosystem, we're happy to announce that we'll be offering mentoring for new speakers. Our mentors can help you with tasks such as reviewing your abstract, reviewing your presentation outline or slides, or practicing your talk with you. You may apply to the mentoring program as a newcomer speaker if you: Never presented before or Presented only lightning talks or Presented full-length talks at small meetups (<50 ppl) Submission Guidelines Mentored presentations will have 25-minute slots, where 20 minutes will include the presentation and 5 minutes will be reserved for questions. The number of newcomer session slots is limited, so we will probably not be able to accept all applications. You must submit your talk and abstract to apply for the mentoring program, our mentors are volunteering their time and will happily provide feedback but won't write your presentation for you! If you are experiencing problems with Pentabarf, the proposal submission interface, or have other questions, you can email our devroom mailing list[2] and we will try to help you. How to Apply In addition to agreeing to video recording and confirming that you can attend FOSDEM in case your session is accepted, please write "speaker mentoring program application" in the "Submission notes" field, and list any prior speaking experience or other relevant information for your application. Call for Mentors Interested in mentoring newcomer speakers? We'd love to have your help! Please email iaas-virt-devroom at lists.fosdem.org with a short speaker biography and any specific fields of expertise (for example, KVM, OpenStack, storage, etc.) so that we can match you with a newcomer speaker from a similar field. Estimated time investment can be as low as a 5-10 hours in total, usually distributed weekly or bi-weekly. Never mentored a newcomer speaker but interested to try? As the mentoring program coordinator, I will be happy to answer your questions and give you tips on how to optimize the mentoring process. Email Brian Proffitt[3] and he will be happy to answer your questions! Code of Conduct Following the release of the updated code of conduct for FOSDEM, we'd like to remind all speakers and attendees that all of the presentations and discussions in our devroom are held under the guidelines set in the CoC and we expect attendees, speakers, and volunteers to follow the CoC at all times. If you submit a proposal and it is accepted, you will be required to confirm that you accept the FOSDEM CoC. If you have any questions about the CoC or wish to have one of the devroom organizers review your presentation slides or any other content for CoC compliance, please email us and we will do our best to assist you. Call for Volunteers We are also looking for volunteers to help run the devroom. We need assistance watching time for the speakers, and helping with video for the devroom. Please contact me, Brian Proffitt, for more information. Questions? If you have any questions about this devroom, please send your questions to our devroom mailing list. You can also subscribe to the list to receive updates about important dates, session announcements, and to connect with other attendees. See you all at FOSDEM! Internet of Things devroom CFP
by Maxime Vincent 19 Oct '16

19 Oct '16

Greetings everyone, Hereby I am announcing the Internet of Things devroom CFP. The CFP can be found here as well: https://github.com/maximevince/IoT-devroom-fosdem CFP: FOSDEM Internet of Things devroom In February 2017, we're organizing the fourth FOSDEM devroom for the Internet of Things. We're now calling for proposals. Do you have an interesting project you'd like to present to more than 5,000 free and open source developers? Introduction FOSDEM (Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting) is a non-commercial, volunteer organized European event centered around free and open source software development. It is aimed at developers and anyone interested in the free and open source software movement. It aims to enable developers to meet and to promote the awareness and use of free and open source software. For general news and discussion on FOSDEM, please sign-up to the fosdem(a)lists.fosdem.org mailing list at: https://lists.fosdem.org/listinfo. FOSDEM is held annually during the first weekend of February at the Université Libre de Bruxelles Solbosch campus, situated in the southeast of Brussels, Belgium and easily reachable by public transport from Brussels-Central railway station. The FOSDEM devrooms are whole-day tracks focused on one topic, aimed at developers. For the the third time, we're organizing an Internet of Things devroom at FOSDEM. As Helen Duce said, "We have a clear vision: to create a world where every object — from jumbo jets to sewing needles — is linked to the Internet." Thousands of keen developers come to FOSDEM. There's no better event in Europe for reaching out to free and open source developers. Date The IoT devroom will be on Saturday 4th February, 2017. How to Submit a Proposal If you have an IoT project you'd like to present, please submit it via FOSDEM's Pentabarf web tool. You will create an account (if you don't have one from a previous year), and select the "Internet of Things devroom" as the track. We'll discuss and select talks here: https://github.com/maximevince/IoT-devroom-fosdem. If you want to join in the review process, please just comment over there. We’ll then make a selection from all the submitted proposals. We're looking for talks that cover one or more of the following topics: * FOSS solutions for machine-to-machine communication on small embedded devices. * Distributed FOSS applications in any field of interest for autonomous/self-controlled devices, (e.g. domotics, automotive, etc. * Presentation of embedded devices with one or more possibilities to join a network. * Infrastructure related (TCP/IP, mesh networking, message queuing, cross-layer solutions). * Real-life problematics and their solution (Cost of maintenance, power management, reachability). * Interoperability solutions for heterogeneous applications, devices, protocols, media. * All presentations must be fully FOSS, and related to software development. The devroom will last one day, approx from 10.30 until 18:00. Talks will last 25 minutes each, starting on the hour, with a 5-minute break between talks. There will be no break for lunch. Speakers should respect the following talk format: a five to ten minute demo (live demo preferred over pre-recorded), followed by five to ten minutes of explanation, and then five minutes for Q&A with the audience. Make sure you stick to your 25 minute time slot. All talks are recorded and streamed live, and by submitting a talk you agree to this. We want to make this devroom as interesting and diverse as possible, which means we will favor talks that contrast each other. The deadline for submissions is December 1st. If you submit late, your talk may still be considered but will have to be exceptionally interesting. The program will be finalized by December 30th.

Hello everyone, please find below the FOSDEM'17 HPC, Big Data, and Data Science Devroom Call for Participation. Cheers, -Vasia. ======================================= FOSDEM'17 HPC, Big Data, and Data Science Devroom Call for Participation Saturday, February 4, 2017, Brussels, Belgium Also available here: <https://hpc-bigdata-fosdem17.github.io> # Overview We are proud to announce the 2nd edition of the HPC, Big Data and Data Science devroom, co-located with FOSDEM 2017. FOSDEM is an annual conference about free and open source software, attended by over 5000 developers and open-source enthusiasts from all over the world. This devroom is organised by representatives from the HPC and Big Data communities, who are joining forces to bring both communities together. High Performance Computing (HPC) and Big Data are two important approaches to scientific computing. HPC typically deals with smaller, highly structured data sets and huge amounts of computation while Big Data, not surprisingly, deals with gigantic, unstructured data sets and focuses on the I/O bottlenecks. With the Big Data trend unlocking access to an unprecedented amount of data, Data Science has emerged to tackle the problem of creating processes and approaches to extracting knowledge or insights from these data sets. Machine learning and predictive analytics algorithms have joined the family of more traditional HPC algorithms and are pushing the requirements of cluster and data scalability. Free and Open Source communities have been the foundation of the HPC and Big Data communities for some time. In the HPC community, it should be no surprise that 497 of the Top500 supercomputers in the world run Linux. On the Big Data side, the Hadoop ecosystem has had a tremendous amount of Open Source contributions from a wide range of organizations coming together under the Apache Software Foundation. Our goal is to bring the communities together, share expertise, learn how we can benefit from each other’s work and foster further joint research and collaboration. We welcome talks about Free and Open Source solutions to the challenges presented by large scale computing, data management and data analysis. The devroom will take place on Saturday, February 4th, 2017, at ULB (Campus Solbosch), in Brussels, Belgium. Join us to enjoy a full day of talks, demos and interesting discussions on open-source HPC, Big Data and Data Science. Sounds interesting? Submit your talk proposal below and see you in Brussels! # Topics Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: Architecture and design of High Performance Computing (HPC) and Big Data systems Architecture and design of Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) and data acquisition pipelines Data security and governance Tools and technologies related to HPC and computational science, for example: Multithreading (OpenMP, etc.) Distributed computing (MPI, etc.) GPGPU computing (OpenCL, OpenACC, etc.) Parallel filesystems and storage Large-scale performance analysis and debugging Computational paradigms for Big Data systems MapReduce engines Streaming engines SQL engines Dataflow engines Emerging hardware trends of large scale clusters Large scale memory pooling High-speed interconnects ARM cluster architecture System administration of HPC and Big Data clusters User support tools Machine learning libraries and tools Scientific software applications, tools and libraries (across all scientific domains) Big Data platforms, extensions to existing systems, libraries, APIs Experience reports on using Big Data systems, for example: Large-scale deployments Development and configuration issues Tuning and performance tips and lessons learned Interesting Big Data use-cases and applications Comparative analysis of existing systems, evaluation results, performance studies Interdisciplinary HPC/Big Data use-cases, for example: Applications using both HPC and Big Data technologies Integration issues Open research problems on the convergence of HPC and Big Data Running MPI jobs on Big Data clusters and vice-versa # Submission We invite presenters to submit talk proposals to present high-quality work with sufficient background material to be clear to the HPC, Big Data, and/or Data Science communities. Talk proposals should be submitted through the FOSDEM Pentabarf server. Submissions must include: Abstract Session type Session length Expected prior knowledge / intended audience Speaker bio Links to code / slides / material for the talk (optional) Links to previous talks by the speaker Our intention is to have a full day of talks of about 20 minutes each, with an additional 5 minutes for questions by attendees. We would also like to note: Talks will be streamed live and will be recorded. By submitting a session, speakers agree to being recorded and having their talk made available. All accepted talks will be about (using) free and open source software. We highly discourage “marketing” talks. Submit here: <https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM17> When submitting your talk in Pentabarf, make sure to select the ‘HPC, Big Data, and Data Science Devroom’ as the ‘Track’. If you already have a Pentabarf account from a previous FOSDEM edition, please reuse it. Create an account if, and only if, you don’t have one from a previous year.
