FOSDEM PGDay 2017 is a one day conference that will be held ahead of the main FOSDEM event in Brussels, Belgium, on Feb 3rd, 2017. This will be a one-day PostgreSQL focused event with a single track of talks. This conference day will be for-charge with a registration of 50€, and will be held at the Brussels Marriott Hotel. Registration is required to attend and since we have a limited number of seats vailable for this event, we urge everybody to register as soon as possible once open. PostgreSQL Europe will also have our regular devroom at the main FOSDEM event during the weekend. This day will, of course, continue to be free of charge and open to all FOSDEM entrants. No registration is required to attend this day. For full details about the conference, venue and hotel, see the event website at https://2017.fosdempgday.org/. The call for papers is now open for both FOSDEM PGDay and our devroom. We are looking for talks to fill both these days with content for both insiders and new users. Submissions can be made to both events, or just one, please note in the submission form at which event you are interested in presenting. Note that we are not using the FOSDEM Pentabarf system for submissions. The website has all the details at https://2017.fosdempgday.org/callforpapers/. The deadline for submissions is November 13th, 2016, so get your submissions in soon! We also have a special negotiated rate with the Brussels Marriott Hotel. For details, see https://2017.fosdempgday.org/venue/. Call for Participation: Community DevRoom at FOSDEM 2017
by Leslie Hawthorn 18 Oct '16

18 Oct '16

Hello everyone, We are happy to let everyone know that the Community DevRoom will be held this year at the FOSDEM Conference. FOSDEM is the premier free and open source software event in Europe, taking place in Brussels from 4-5 February at the Université libre de Bruxelles. You can learn more about the conference at https://fosdem.org. == tl;dr == * Community DevRoom takes place on Sunday, 5 February * Submit your papers via Pentabarf at https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM17 *and* PaperCall.io at https://www.papercall.io/communitydevroom * Indicate if your session will run for 30 or 45 minutes, including Q&A. If you can do either 30 or 45 minutes, please let us know! * Submission deadline is 25 November 2016 and accepted speakers will be notified by 12 December 2016 == In more detail == We are happy to let everyone know that the Community DevRoom will be held this year at the FOSDEM Conference. FOSDEM is the premier free and open source software event in Europe, taking place in Brussels from 4-5 February at the Université libre de Bruxelles. You can learn more about the conference at https://fosdem.org. The Community DevRoom will take place on Sunday, 5 February. The purpose of the devroom is to provide concrete, useful advice on how to best enable contributors to be successful so more FOSS software gets written. == Why This DevRoom == Our goals in running this DevRoom are to: * Connect folks interested in nurturing their communities with one another so they can share knowledge during and long after FOSDEM * Educate those who are primarily software developers on community-oriented topics that are vital in the process of software development, e.g. effective collaboration * Provide concrete advice on dealing with squishy human problems == Talk Topics == We are seeking proposals on all aspects of creating and nurturing communities for free software projects. Please submit a proposal on any topic of your choice, but here are some suggestions to help get your creativity engaged: 1) How to navigate the different cycles in the lives of contributors What happens when you’re just feeling bored with what you’re doing or burn out in general? How can we plan for the natural ebbs and flows of contributor interest and availability? 2) Compensating volunteers Is this important? How is it done well? Should we discourage people from “working for free”? 3) Career progression for community oriented professionals How do you level up as a community manager? Developer Advocate? What skills do you need to best serve your community and how do you acquire them? How do we explain what we do all day so people value this work? 4) Community health metrics How do you tell if your community is actually doing well? How do you gather real numbers to prove that your gut instincts are correct? 5) Conflict resolution How do we continue working well together when there are conflicts? Is there a difference in how types of conflicts best get resolved”this code is terrible” vs. “we should have a contributor agreement”? We are especially interested in how tos / success stories from projects that have weathered conflict. Again, these are just suggestions. We welcome proposals on any aspect of community building! == Preparing Your Submission & Deadlines == === Length of Presentation === We are looking for talk submissions between 30 and 45 minutes in length, including time for Q&A. In general, we are hoping to accept as many talks as possible so we would really appreciate it if you could make all of your remarks in 30 minutes - our DevRoom is only a single day - but if you need longer just let us know. === Anything Extra You Would Like Us to Know === Beyond giving us your speaker bio and paper abstract, make sure to let us know anything else you’d like to as part of your submission. Some folks like to share their Twitter handles, others like to make sure we can take a look at their GitHub activity history - whatever works for you. We especially welcome videos of you speaking elsewhere, or even just a list of talks you have done previously. First time speakers are, of course, welcome! === Submission Instructions === In order to make review easiest for our program committee, we are reviewing sessions in Papercall.io to make comments and share feedback amongst reviewers. However, you still need to complete your submission via FOSDEM’s Pentabarf system so we can ensure accepted proposals are properly published on the conference website. Yes, we know it is a pain to do the same submission in two places but your Community DevRoom committee thanks you for your diligence and for making the review process easier for us! Pentabarf Submission URL: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM17 Papercall.io Submission URL: https://www.papercall.io/communitydevroom == Key Dates == * CFP opens 18 October 2016 * Proposals due in both Pentabarf and Papercall.io by 25 November 2016 * Speakers notified by 12 December 2016 * DevRoom takes place 5 February 2016 at FOSDEM If you have any questions, please let us know! If you do not want to give a talk yourself, you may still send suggestions for what else you would like to see, or do in the devroom. Please send your suggestions to the mailing list. The deadline for your proposal is on December the 4th. Make sure to include the following in your proposal: * Title of your talk (will be printed in the FOSDEM booklet) * Your full name (will be printed in the FOSDEM booklet) * A short abstract (one or two paragraphs) * Duration of your talk (please, at least 25 and no longer than 45 min) The official devroom schedule (along with the accepted talks) will be announced on December the 11th on the devroom's mailing list and the speakers will be notified via e-mail. The schedule will also be published on the FOSDEM website. About FOSDEM FOSDEM is a two-day event organised by volunteers to promote the widespread use of free and open source software. Taking place in the beautiful city of Brussels (Belgium), FOSDEM is widely recognised as the best such conference in Europe. FOSDEM covers a wide spectrum of free and open source software projects, and offers a platform for people to collaborate. To this end, FOSDEM has set up developer rooms (devrooms) with network/internet connectivity and projectors where teams can meet and showcase their projects. Devrooms are a place for teams to discuss, hack and publicly present latest directions, lightning talks, news and discussions. Besides developer rooms, FOSDEM also offers main tracks, lightning talks, certification exams and project stands. Every year, FOSDEM hosts more than 5000 developers at the ULB Solbosch campus. Participation and attendance is totally free, though the organisers gratefully accept donations and sponsorship. No registration necessary. About the devroom Since the first Microkernel devroom in 2012 this devroom has been part of each following FOSDEM. By now it has become a somewhat institutionalized tradition for the micro kernel community to meet there; to this date over a dozen projects have participated in one way or another. Each of the projects face similar challenges but come up with partially differend solutions. Therefore, the goal of the Microkernel devroom is to bring the various projects together, let them exchange ideas, cross-pollinate and socialize. Social events It also has become a habit that the microkernel projects dine together somewhere in downtown Brussels after the devroom closes. The year 2017 will not be any different, so there is going to be a microkernel family dinner on Saturday night. The exact location and time will be specified later. Consult the FOSDEM web and other projects for additional social events such as the famous FOSDEM-organized Friday Beer Event and the FOSDEM-arranged free sightseeing tours for spouses. Important dates recap * 04.12.2016: Deadline for submissions * 11.12.2016: Schedule published and speakers notified of acceptance * 04.02.2017: The devroom takes places Links [1] https://fosdem.org/ [2] https://fosdem.org/2017/practical/transportation/ [3] https://fosdem.org/submit [4] https://lists.fosdem.org/listinfo/microkernel-devroom See you all at FOSDEM!

Call for Participation: Valgrind at FOSDEM 2017
by Ivo Raisr 16 Oct '16

16 Oct '16

Valgrind developer room at FOSDEM 2017 (Brussels, Belgium, February 4th). FOSDEM is a free software event that offers open source communities a place to meet, share ideas and collaborate. It is renown for being highly developer-oriented and brings together 5000+ hackers from all over the world. It is held in the city of Brussels (Belgium). http://fosdem.org/ FOSDEM 2017 will take place during the weekend of Saturday, February 4th and Sunday February 5th 2017. On Saturday we will have a devroom for Valgrind. Devrooms are a place for development teams to meet, discuss, hack and publicly present the project's latest improvements and future directions. For the third time there will be a dedicated Valgrind devroom. We will have a whole day to hang out together as Valgrind community. Please join us, regardless of whether you are a Valgrind core hacker, Valgrind tool hacker, Valgrind user, Valgrind packager or hacker on a project that integrates, extends or complements Valgrind. Call For Participation We would like to organize a series of talks/discussions on various topics relevant to both core hackers, new developers, users, packagers and cross project functionality. Please do submit a talk proposal by Thursday December 1st 2016, so we can make a list of activities during the day. Some possible topics for talks/discussions are: - Recently added functional changes (for valgrind users). - State of the valgrind code base (core hackers). - Speeding up Memcheck by inlining of the fast cases of its helper function calls (core hackers). - Supporting Valgrind on new MacOS X versions (valgrind developers and users). - Status of current ports and possible future ports to other architectures (valgrind developers and users). - Valgrind and Wine (valgrind developers and users). - Helgrind - basic design, problems and opportunities (core and tools). - Get feedback on what what kinds of new functionality would be useful. Which tools users would like to see and/or which new features for the existing tools. (valgrind developers and users). - Modify memcheck to report the last leaked pointer to a block integrate "omega" as a memcheck option or omega as a separate tool. - Better support compiled and JITted code. allowing the JIT compiler to indicate the link between the JITted code and the source code. - Valgrind and transactional memory. - How to add simple features (adding syscalls for a platform or VEX instructions for an architecture port). (new core developers). - Making Valgrind really multi-threaded, parallelising Memcheck parallelising the rest of the framework, and tools (for core hackers). - Should we continue to support OS X? What about Valgrind on MS-Windows? Solaris? *BSD? (attracting new hackers). - Redo the JIT framework to reduce baseline overheads? (core hackers). - Discuss release/bugfixing strategy/policy (core hackers, packagers). - Packaging valgrind for distros, handling patches, suppressions, etc. (packagers). - Valgrind/GDB integration (cross project). - Valgrind vs the compiler. Compilers like GCC and clang now have "valgrind like" features, eg -fsanitize=address|thread|undefined. How does valgrind complement or improve on these features? - Eclipse and other visualisation tools for valgrind (cross project). - Practical examples of using Valgrind in (big) system automatic regression testing (users). - Tuning Valgrind for large workloads (users). Use the FOSDEM 'pentabarf' tool to submit your proposal: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM17 - If necessary, create a Pentabarf account and activate it. Please reuse your account from previous years if you have already created it. - In the "Person" section, provide First name, Last name (in the "General" tab), Email (in the "Contact" tab) and Bio ("Abstract" field in the "Description" tab). - Submit a proposal by clicking on "Create event". - Important! Select the "Valgrind devroom" track (on the "General" tab). - Provide the title of your talk ("Event title" in the "General" tab). - Provide a description of the subject of the talk and the intended audience (in the "Abstract" field of the "Description" tab) - Provide a rough outline of the talk or goals of the session (a short list of bullet points covering topics that will be discussed) in the "Full description" field in the "Description" tab Julian, Philippe, Mark and Ivos will review the proposals and organize the schedule for the day. Please feel free to suggest or discuss any ideas for the devroom on the Valgrind developer mailinglist before creating a proposal: valgrind-developers at lists.sourceforge.net Recording of talks As usually the FOSDEM organisers plan to have live streaming and recording fully working, both for remote/later viewing of talks, and so that people can watch streams in the hallways when rooms are full. This obviously requires speakers to consent to being recorded and streamed. If you plan to be a speaker, please understand that by doing so you implicitly give consent for your talk to be recorded and streamed. The recordings will be published under the same licence as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY). Important dates: Talk/Discussion Submission deadline: Thursday 1 Dec 2016 Devroom Schedule announcement: Thursday 15 Dec 2016 Devroom day: Saturday 4 Feb 2017 Hope to see you all at FOSDEM 2017 in the Valgrind devroom. Legal and Policy Issues DevRoom CFP
by Tom Marble 15 Oct '16

15 Oct '16

##################################################################### Call For Participation Legal and Policy Issues DevRoom at FOSDEM 2017 CONFERENCE DATE: Saturday & Sunday 4-5 February 2017 in Brussels, Belgium CFP DEADLINE: Sunday 27 November 2016 at 23:59 AoE (Anywhere on Earth) SPEAKERS NOTIFIED: Sunday 4 December 2016 (on or before) CFP Introduction ================ Open Source and Free Software originated as hacks on copyright law. Patent and trademark law and legal frameworks relating to data privacy and security also have significant effects on Free Software development. Governance and policies around free software projects set the rules for collaboration and can be critical to a project's success. Our community has substantial expertise in this area. We should discuss these matters in an forum open to all. Hackers, lawyers, policy experts, and community leaders all possess expertise in these matters. TL;DR ===== Hackers, contributors and lawyers alike are encouraged to submit on any project policy or legal topic. Successful proposals will cover topics of interest at a medium to advanced level. Fill out an application on FOSDEM's Pentabarf. (See below for details.) Topics Sought ============= This DevRoom seeks proposals for 25 and 45 minute talks and/or panel discussions that address issues of software freedom project policies and legal issues that extend beyond and/or are orthogonal to technical issues faced by projects. Such topics could include, but aren't necessarily limited to: * Strategies and plans for addressing harrassment, exclusionary and/or discriminatory behavior in FLOSS communities. * Who controls the copyright, trademark, or patent licensing, release plans, CLA administration, or security bug reporting policies of your project, and why? What challenges have you faced in these policy areas and how are you seeking to change it? * How is your project governed? Do you have a non-profit organization, or a for-profit company that primarily controls your project, or neither? Do you wish your project governance was different? Who decided your governance initially? What politics (good and bad) have occurred around your governance choices and how have you changed your policy? Does your project have a "shadow governance", whereby technical governance is open and fair, but some entity has its own opaque political structure that influences your project? Are you worried that your project might and you don't know? * Legal topics of all sorts and their interaction with software freedom culture and work remain welcome, and could include: How does your project make use of legal advice? What legal advice do you give projects and what topics do you put first on the list to worry about in projects? Discuss in detail a legal and/or policy issue your project faced and how your community dealt with it. What lessons did you learn? Are some of your developers afraid to discuss legal or quasi-legal issues without their lawyers, or their employers' lawyers, present? How has that impeded or helped your project? * Contribution and engagement policies: how does your project engage new contributors and what policy decisions did your project make to welcome new contributors? What legal issues or policy concerns has your project faced historically in its community engagement efforts, and what did you learn from these experiences? * How does money affect your community? How is funding of developers handled in your project? What policies do you set to welcome volunteers to join a community where most developers are paid? Does your project have policies that forbid funding developers directly? Does reliance on volunteer labor lead to lack of diversity since only the affluent can participate? If you had unconstrained resources at your disposal, what would you change about the funding structure of your project? Given the resources you have, what have you tried to change? Have you succeeded or failed? Would more money in the ecosystem hurt or help your project? * How do projects handle conflicts of interest and make sure that relevant interests of contributors are disclosed in important decision making discussions? * Talks on license compliance, licensing business models, and anything akin to, or building upon, what you've seen in our DevRoom before are of course welcome. (URLs to talks from previous years are below.) Regarding topic relevancy, here's the only "don't": please don't propose introductory talks; there are other venues appropriate for those. FOSDEM is the meeting place of experts in Open Source and Free Software project governance, law, and policy. This DevRoom is for intermediate to advanced topics surrounding just about anything you might call a "legal" or "policy" issue for your project! Should I Submit? ================ However, do consider that what may seem elementary to you may in fact be an intermediate topic in this area. In particular, while we expect to receive submissions from lawyers, we've found in our careers that non-lawyers often know just as much (and often more) about these topics than lawyers. Developers and other Free Software project participants who regularly face complex policy and legal questions are strongly and particularly encouraged to submit proposals. Historically, some of the most lively and intriguing talks in this DevRoom's previous years have been from developers who have been thrust (often due to circumstances beyond their control) into dealing with legal and policy issues for Open Source and Free Software. Look at past talks in our DevRoom for inspiration: https://archive.fosdem.org/2016/schedule/track/legal_and_policy_issues/ https://archive.fosdem.org/2015/schedule/track/legal_and_policy_issues/ https://archive.fosdem.org/2014/schedule/track/legal_and_policy_issues/ https://archive.fosdem.org/2013/schedule/track/legal_issues/ https://archive.fosdem.org/2012/schedule/track/legal_issues_devroom.html CFP Schedule And Submission Details =================================== Submit proposals NO LATER THAN 27 November 2016 at 23:59 AoE (Anywhere on Earth) Please use the following URL to submit your talk to FOSDEM 2017: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM17 and follow the following rules: * Select as the Track "Legal and Policy Issues devroom". * Include a title. (Note that "Subtitle" entry doesn't appear on all conference documents, so make sure "Title" can stand on its own without "Subtitle" present.) * Include an Abstract of about 500 characters and a full description of any length you wish, but in both fields, please be concise, but clear and descriptive. * Indicate whether you seek a 25 or 45 minute slot. NOTE: the quality of the submission needs to be progressively *more impressive* the longer time you ask for and we may accept your submission with an alternate duration as our schedule is so tight. * Use the "Links" sub-area to your past work in the field you'd like to share. Particularly helpful are recordings (audio/video) of your past talks on the subject or past papers/blog posts you've written on the subject. * You are encouraged to enter biographic information under the "Person" section (e.g. you may upload an image, enter your background in the "Description" tab, and sites of interest under the "Links" tab). * State that you agree to CC BY-SA-4.0 or CC BY-4.0 licensing of your talk in the "Submission Notes" field. Add a statement such as this: "Should my presentation be scheduled for FOSDEM 2017, I hereby agree to license all recordings, slides and any other materials presented under the Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 4.0 International license. * Also in the notes field, confirm your availability to speak on Saturday and Sunday, 4-5 February 2017 in Brussels. (You may include time slots of non-availability on Saturday and/or Sunday, but this may negatively impact acceptance decisions.) Failure to follow these instructions above (and those on the FOSDEM 2017 site) may result in automatic rejection of your talk submission. However, if you have trouble with submission via the official system, please do contact <fosdem-legal-policy at faif.us> for assistance. Travel Funding does not exist (sadly)! -------------------------------------- We are volunteer track organizers of a volunteer conference. We cannot sponsor travel ourselves. However, please *do* submit anyway if you aren't sure about your travel funding and mention in your application that you have uncertainties. We would like the opportunity to talk and discuss the situation with highly exceptional speakers who would like to join our DevRoom but can't due to lack of funding. We can't promise anything, but it is better to know if there are qualified speakers available that need funding. Knowing that will help us find funding in future! Diversity Statement ------------------- The organizers of this DevRoom are committed to increasing the diversity of the free software movement. To that end, our CFP process takes demographic information into account in order to build a program that features as many different voices and perspectives as possible. If you are comfortable doing so, please share any demographic information about yourself in the "Submissions Notes". Such disclosure is not mandatory by any means. No Assurance of Acceptance -------------------------- The organizers (listed below) realize many of our friends and colleagues will respond to this CFP. We welcome submissions from all, but an invitation from any of us to submit is *not* an assurance of acceptance. We typically must make hard decisions.
