FOSDEM Code of Conduct
by Johan van Selst 15 Nov '15

15 Nov '15

Just a short note to let the community know that the FOSDEM staff has not been ignoring the discussion about appropriate conduct, inclusiveness and harassment at conferences. We do take these issues seriously. The organisation wishes to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all participants and does not condone offensive behaviour. This is already established policy. There will be a FOSDEM Code of Conduct that clarifies the position of the organisation in this regard. We plan to publish this text soon. For several years already, FOSDEM has had a coordinator for concerns regarding social conduct at the conference (name and mobile telephone number have been published on the first page of the visitor booklet). For the next event, we plan to have a small coordination team, with simple and clear contact information. Regarding accessibility, we are aware that the conference location is not ideal for everybody. We try to be as accommodating as possible to attendees with accessibility needs. For several years, we have also had a coordinator who can be approached with any questions regarding this (again, name and telephone number are in the booklet). Best regards, Johan van Selst on behalf of the FOSDEM team

by Andrea Pescetti 05 Nov '15

05 Nov '15

FOSDEM 16 will be held at the ULB Campus Solbosch, Brussels (Belgium) on Saturday, January 30, and Sunday, January 31, 2016. Open document editors are coming again to FOSDEM with a shared devroom which gives every project in this area a chance to present ODF related developments and innovations. The devroom is jointly organized by Apache OpenOffice and LibreOffice. We invite submission of talks for the Open Document Editors devroom, to be held on Saturday, January 30, from 10:30AM to 6:30PM. Length of talks should be limited to 20 minutes, as we would like to have questions after each presentation, and to fit as many presenters as possible in the schedule. Exceptions must be explicitly requested and justified. Technical talks (code, extensions, localization, QA, tools and adoption related cases) about open document editors or the ODF document format are welcome. Submissions must be done by the speakers using the Pentabarf system: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM16/ While filing your proposal, please provide the title of your talk, a short abstract (one or two paragraphs), some information about yourself (name, bio and photo, but please do remember that your profile might be already stored at Pentabarf) and specify what topic (Apache OpenOffice, LibreOffice, other ODF editors, ODF in general...) your talk is about. You do not need to create a new account if you already have one. If the password has been lost, you can easily recover it. Presenting at FOSDEM implies giving permission to be recorded. The recordings will be published under the CC-BY license. The deadline is Monday, December 7, 2015. Accepted speakers will be notified by December 15, 2015. You can send any questions to the devroom mailing list: open-document-devroom(a)lists.fosdem.org

by Dirk Craeynest 04 Nov '15

04 Nov '15

----------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Presentations 7th Ada Developer Room at FOSDEM 2016 Saturday 30 January 2016, Brussels, Belgium http://www.cs.kuleuven.be/~dirk/ada-belgium/events/16/160130-fosdem.html Organized in cooperation with Ada-Europe ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Ada-Belgium [1] is pleased to announce that there will be a one-day Ada Developer Room on Saturday 30 January 2016 at FOSDEM 2016 in Brussels, Belgium. This Ada DevRoom is once more organized in cooperation with Ada-Europe [2]. General Information ------------------- FOSDEM [3], the Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting, is a free and non-commercial two-day weekend event organized early each year in Brussels, Belgium. It is highly developer-oriented and brings together 5000+ participants from all over the world. No registration is necessary. The goal is to provide open source developers and communities a place to meet with other developers and projects, to be informed about the latest developments in the open source world, to attend interesting talks and presentations on various topics by open source project leaders and committers, and to promote the development and the benefits of open source solutions. Ada Developer Room ------------------ At previous FOSDEM events, Ada-Belgium has organized very well attended Ada Developer Rooms, offering a full day program in 2006 [4], a two-day program in 2009 [5], and full day programs in 2012 [6], 2013 [7], 2014 [8], and 2015 [9]. An important goal is to present exciting Ada technology and projects also to people outside the traditional Ada community. Our proposal for another dedicated Ada DevRoom was accepted, and now work continues to prepare the detailed program. We most probably will have a total of 8 schedulable hours between 11:00 and 19:00 in a room which accommodates 60 participants. More information will be posted on the dedicated web-page on the Ada-Belgium site [10], and final announcements will of course also be sent to various forums, lists and newsgroups. Call for Presentations ---------------------- Ada-Belgium calls on you to: - inform us at ada-belgium-board(a)cs.kuleuven.be about specific presentations you would like to hear in this Ada DevRoom; - for bonus points, subscribe to the Ada-FOSDEM mailing list [11] to discuss and help organize the details; - for more bonus points, be a speaker: the Ada-FOSDEM mailing list is the place to be! Do you have a talk you want to give? Do you have a project you would like to present? Would you like to get more people involved with your project? We're inviting proposals that are related to Ada software development, and include a technical oriented discussion. You're not limited to slide presentations, of course. Be creative. Propose something fun to share with people so they might feel some of your enthusiasm for Ada! Speaking slots are 20 or 45 minutes, plus 5 minutes for Q&A. Depending on interest, we might also have a session with lightning presentations (e.g. 5 minutes each). We'd like to put together a draft schedule early December. So, please act ASAP, and definitely by November 29, 2015 at the latest. We look forward to lots of feedback and proposals! Call for Participation: Coding for Language Communities devroom @FOSDEM2016
by Peter Bouda 02 Nov '15

02 Nov '15

FOSDEM 2016 - Coding for Language Communities devroom CALL FOR PARTICIPATION Sunday, January 31, 2016, Brussels, Belgium There are currently around 7.000 languages spoken all over the world, but in many communities there has been astrong tendency to learn and use only major languages such as English, German, French, etc., especially in electronic communication. This is partly caused by the lack of hardware (e.g. keyboards) and software (for transliteration, text completion, etc.) for under-resourced languages, which constrain the natural usage of people's own language in many tasks. The grassroots initiative "Coding for Language Communities" involvesongoing research and development to turn that process in exactly the other direction: every successful technology can be used to teach, revitalize and therefore boost the use of regional languages. This technology should also assist the renewal of local languages and cultures by allowing people to actively teach, learn, extend, and spread their language in their community. Our aim is to give people the ability to use their mother tongue in everyday electronic communication, no matter where they are or what language they speak. The initiative "Coding for Language Communites" aims to bring together three groups: 1) Speakers of languages that are currently not supported by language technologies and that want to use their language on electronic devices; 2) Students of linguistics and language-related disciplines interested in learning about software development; 3) Software developers and students of computational sciences that are interested in supporting under-resourced languages by technological means. We think that free software is a requirement for free communication in any language. Our goal is to empower communities to build their own language processing tools based on free software projects. Therefore, we welcome proposals for talks about, but not limited to, the following topics: * Free software and open source projects that develop NLP tools * Open speech interfaces for computers and mobile devices * Open AI projects that process natural language * Multi-lingual input methods * Translation of free software and open source projects * Development of technical terminology for under-resourced languages * Open Data, data collection and multi-lingual corpora * Language diversity in free software and open source Talks should be 30-40 minutes in length, plus 10-15 minutes time for Q&A.Paper submission is handled via the Pentabarf tool at the FOSDEM website[1]. The deadline for proposals is December 11th, 2015. Make sure to include the following in your proposal: * title of your talk * abstract * your full name * your short bio * a picture of yourself(optional) * duration of your talk * links to code / slides / material for the talk (optional) The devroom will take place on Sunday of January 31, 2016 at ULB Solbosch Campus in Brussels, Belgium [2].Presenting at FOSDEM implies giving permission to be recorded. The recordings will be published under the same licence as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY). Any question or doubts? Please use our mailing list[3] or join our Telegram chat channel[4]. About FOSDEM FOSDEM is a two-day event organised by volunteers to promote the widespread use of free and open source software. Taking place in the beautiful city of Brussels (Belgium), FOSDEM is widely recognised as the best such conference in Europe. FOSDEM covers a wide spectrum of free and open source software projects, and offers a platform for people to collaborate. To this end, FOSDEM has set up developer rooms (devrooms) with network/internet connectivity and projectors where teams can meet and showcase their projects. Devrooms are a place for teams to discuss, hack and publicly present latest directions, lightning talks, news and discussions. Besides developer rooms, FOSDEM also offers main tracks, lightning talks, certification exams and project stands. Every year, FOSDEM hosts more than 5000 developers at the ULB Solbosch campus. Participation and attendance is totally free, though the organisers gratefully accept donations and sponsorship. No registration necessary.
