FOSDEM 2016: Mozilla DevRoom Call for Papers
by Francisco Picolini 29 Oct '15

29 Oct '15

Hello all, One more year FOSDEM <https://fosdem.org/2016/> is coming. Mozilla has been present since 2003, and next year we will have a Mozilla Room again. *This is a call for all people interested in Mozilla to propose your talks for FOSDEM.* Like we did last year, our idea is to propose some topics that will be aligned with Mozilla goals for 2016. We will have our devroom only one day (on Saturday), so please note that we cannot assure that your talk will be selected due to agenda constrains. If you want, you can propose a talk for the other dev-rooms in pentabarf <https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM16>. _*Topics*_ The topics that we want to cover for this next edition are: * Privacy/Advocacy * Games/VR * Hello/WebRTC * Firefox Desktop * Firefox for Android * Firefox for iOS * Developer Tools * Firefox OS * Open Web Services * Localization * Webcompat * Add-ons Other talks are allowed as usual, but we will be focusing on these topics. For budgeting reasons, we will be only available to sponsor volunteers from Europe (and some surrounding countries) and that will apply also for speakers, so please be aware of this when you submit your proposal. If you feel that you are not able to talk in public, or too shy, you can suggest topics/talks for the Mozilla devroom on the public etherpad <https://public.etherpad-mozilla.org/p/FOSDEM2016-Proposals>. _* Important Information*_ Duration of the talks: 30 minutes including Q&A *Deadline: December 4th.* Acceptance notifications: December 18th. Presentations will be recorded and streamed, so sending your proposal it will imply that you accept and give permission for this. Note that recording will be published under the same license as all FOSDEM content (cc-by), however, exceptions could be requested. To submit your proposal, visit https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM16 If you have previously send a proposal for FOSDEM, you should probably have a pentabarf account. So we kindly suggest you to not create a new one. If you forgot your password, please reset it. If this is your first time using pentabarf, go ahead and create an account. After you have your account configured (you will receive a confirmation email), create the event, and click on "Show all" in the top right corner to diplay the full form. When submitting your talk in pentabarf, make sure to select "Mozilla devroom" as track, and include the following information: * The title and subtitle of your talk * A short abstract of one paragraph * A longer description if you wish to do so * Links to related websites/blogs etc Regards, -- Francisco Picolini Community Events Coordinator @mozilla /ParticipationTeam

This room is about creating better software through a focus on testing and automation at all layers of the stack. From creating libraries and end-user applications all the way down to packaging, distribution and deployment. Testing and automation is not isolated to a single toolchain, language or platform, there is much to learn and share regardless of background! # What Since this is the fourth year we're hosting the Testing and Automation dev room, here are some ideas of what we would like to see, and what worked in prior years, they're just ideas though! Check out the [2013](https://archive.fosdem.org/2013/schedule/track/testing_and_automation…, [2014](https://archive.fosdem.org/2014/schedule/track/testing_and_automation…, and [2015](https://archive.fosdem.org/2015/schedule/track/testing_and_automation… schedules for inspiration. ### Testing in the real, open source world * War stories/strategies for testing large scale or complex projects * Tools that extend the ability to test low-level code * Projects that are introducing new/interesting ways of testing "systems" ### Cool Tools (good candidates for lightning talks) * Explain/demo how your open source tool made developing quality software better * Combining projects/plugins/tools to build amazing things "Not enough people in the open source community know how to use $X, but here's a tutorial on how to use $X to make your project better." # Where FOSDEM is hosted at [Université libre de Bruxelles in Brussels, Belgium](https://fosdem.org/2016/practical/transportation/). The Testing and Automation dev room is likely slated for Building H, room 13xx, which seats ~145. # When * CFP Submission Deadline: **23:59 UTC, 30 November 2015** * Schedule Announced: **15 December 2015** * Presentations: **30 January 2016** # How Please submit one (or more) 30-40 minute talk proposal(s) OR one (or more) 10 minute lightning talk proposal(s) by **23:59 UTC on November 30th 2015**. CFP: Security Devroom @ FOSDEM'16
by Nikos Mavrogiannopoulos 27 Oct '15

27 Oct '15

Next FOSDEM [1] will, again, have a security devroom, this time on the topic of "Security and Privacy in modern software". We'd like to invite submissions of talks and presentations from developers, security researchers and other interested representatives of open source and free software and hardware projects. This is the call for talks and presentations that will take place in the Security devroom at FOSDEM 2016. Our topic this year: Cryptography has been the foundation of modern crypto software, however, it is only a small fraction of the technology required to achieve security and privacy for users. Thus this year's topic is to focus on the other parts that make software secure: usability, the protection against side-channels, message length analysis, fingerprinting, secure coding practices, code review processes etc. We welcome presentations of security software and hardware which take into account these factors, and presentations that analyze other's solutions. For up-to-date submission and event information: https://github.com/security-devroom/fosdem-2016 The security devroom will be held on Saturday 30st of January 2016 in Brussels, Belgium at ULB. Feel free to forward this announcement to any relevant FOSS project mailing list. [1] https://fosdem.org/2016/ [2] https://github.com/security-devroom/fosdem-2016

Call for Talks: Internet of Things Developer Room
by Pieter Hintjens 24 Oct '15

24 Oct '15

See http://iot-devroom.wikidot.com/blog:3 for full text. On 30 January 2016, we're organizing the third [http://fosdem.org FOSDEM] devroom for the Internet of Things. ++ How to Submit a Proposal If you have a IoT project you'd like to present, please submit it via [https://penta.fosdem.org/submission FOSDEM's Pentabarf] web tool. You will create an account (if you don't have one from a previous year), and select the "Internet of Things devroom" as the track. We'll discuss and select talks on [https://lists.fosdem.org/listinfo/iot-devroom the iot-devroom mailing list]. If you want to join in the review process, please just join that group. The organizers will take the final decision on talks where there is no consensus. We're looking for talks that cover one or more of the following topics: * FOSS solutions for machine-to-machine communication on small embedded devices. * Distributed FOSS applications in any field of interest for autonomous/self-controlled devices, (e.g. domotics, automotive, etc. * Presentation of embedded devices with one or more possibilities to join a network. * Infrastructure related (TCP/IP, mesh networking, message queuing, cross-layer solutions). * Real-life problematics and their solution (Cost of maintenance, power management, reachability). * Interoperability solutions for heterogeneous applications, devices, protocols, media. All presentations must be fully FOSS, and related to software development. The devroom will last one day, from 9.00 until 17:00 (final schedule still to be decided). Talks will last 25 minutes each, starting on the hour, with a 5-minute break between talks. There will be no break for lunch. Speakers should respect the following talk format: a ten minute demo (live demo preferred over pre-recorded), followed by five minutes of explanation, and then ten minutes for Q&A with the audience. All talks are recorded and streamed live, and by submitting a talk you agree to this. We want to make this devroom as interesting and diverse as possible, which means we will favor talks that contrast each other. The deadline for submissions is December 1st. If you submit late, your talk may still be considered but will have to be exceptionally interesting. The program will be finalized by December 30th. We will aim to keep a slot open at the end of the day for open ended discussion and unscheduled talks. -Pieter Hintjens

You do not need to create a new account if you already have one. When in doubt, please use the devroom mailing list[3]. The deadline for your CfP submissions is on 2015-12-13. Make sure to include the following in your proposal: * title of your talk * abstract (one or two paragraphs) * your full name * your short bio * a picture of yourself * duration of your talk The official devroom schedule (along with the accepted talks) will be announced on 2015-12-18 in the devroom's mailing list and the speakers will be notified via e-mail. The schedule will also be published on the FOSDEM web and in the FOSDEM booklet. The devroom will take place on Saturday of January 30, 2016 at ULB Solbosch Campus in Brussels, Belgium[4]. About FOSDEM FOSDEM is a two-day event organised by volunteers to promote the widespread use of free and open source software. Taking place in the beautiful city of Brussels (Belgium), FOSDEM is widely recognised as the best such conference in Europe. FOSDEM covers a wide spectrum of free and open source software projects, and offers a platform for people to collaborate. To this end, FOSDEM has set up developer rooms (devrooms) with network/internet connectivity and projectors where teams can meet and showcase their projects. Devrooms are a place for teams to discuss, hack and publicly present latest directions, lightning talks, news and discussions. Besides developer rooms, FOSDEM also offers main tracks, lightning talks, certification exams and project stands. Every year, FOSDEM hosts more than 5000 developers at the ULB Solbosch campus. Participation and attendance is totally free, though the organisers gratefully accept donations and sponsorship. No registration necessary. About the devroom Since its inception in 2012 the Microkernel devroom has been part of each FOSDEM conference. It has become a sort of an institutionalized tradition since then. To this date over a dozen projects have participated in one way or another, delivering forty talks and other contributions in total. The goal of the Microkernel devroom has been to bring the various projects together and let them share ideas, cross-pollinate and socialize. Each year the devroom is organized by one of the projects based on a system of rotating presidency from the pool of projects that opt in. In 2016 it is HelenOS' turn again. Social events It has become a tradition that the microkernel projects dine together somewhere in downtown Brussels after the devroom closes. The year 2016 will not be any different, so there is going to be a microkernel family dinner on Saturday night. The exact location and time will be specified later. Consult the FOSDEM web and other projects for additional social events such as the famous FOSDEM-organized Friday Beer Event and the FOSDEM-arranged free sightseeing tours for spouses.
