CFP Automotive Devroom | FOSDEM 2014
by Jeremiah Foster 17 Oct '13

17 Oct '13

Hello, The organizers of FOSDEM have kindly provided a devroom for automotive software for the 2014 FOSDEM conference taking place in Brussels, Belgium the first and second of February. FOSDEM (http://fosdem.org) is one of the largest Free Software / Open Source conferences in the world with more than 5,000 developers attending. This email is the official announcement of the call for papers (CFP) for the automotive devroom 2014. We invite anyone interested in discussing software relevant for a car to contribute their proposal for a talk. The car software domain includes In-Vehicle Infotainment, "Clustertainment", telematics, diagnostics, and other areas as well. Feel free to suggest subjects that are of interest to you or that present an interesting engineering problem (or solution.) Please note that the audience is a technical audience and pure marketing talks are likely inappropriate for this particular track. There also ought to be a strong connection to FOSS so that discussion on code can be done openly. If you would like to submit a talk, please use this URL: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/ You'll likely need a login at that URL and then follow the links to the automotive devroom. Information regarding the automotive devroom goes out over this mailing list: https://lists.fosdem.org/listinfo/automotive-devroom We look forward to your submission! by Pieter Hintjens 11 Oct '13

11 Oct '13

Next February 2nd, we're organizing a [http://fosdem.org FOSDEM] devroom for the Internet of Things. We're now calling for proposals. Do you have an interesting project you'd like to present to 5,000+ free and open source developers? If you have a project you'd like to present, or a talk you want to give, please submit it via [https://penta.fosdem.org/submission FOSDEM's Pentabarf] web tool. You will create an account (if you don't have one from a previous year), and select the "Internet of Things devroom" as the track. We'll discuss and select talks on [https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!forum/iot-devroom the Google iot-devroom group]. Anyone who wants to join in the review process, please just join that group. The organizers will take the final decision on talks if there is no consensus. We'll look for talks that include a technical/developer oriented discussion or showcase covering one or more of the following topics: * FOSS solutions for machine-to-machine communication on small embedded devices. * Distributed FOSS applications in any field of interest for autonomous/self-controlled devices, (e.g. domotics, automotive, etc. * Presentation of embedded devices with one or more possibilities to join a network. * Infrastructure related (TCP/IP, mesh networking, message queuing, cross-layer solutions). * Real-life problematics and their solution (Cost of maintenance, power management, reachability). * Interoperability solutions for heterogeneous applications, devices, protocols, media. All presentations must be fully FOSS, and related to software development. The devroom will last one day, with a welcome at 9:45, and talks from 10:00 to 17:00. Provisionally, talks will last 25 minutes each, and we will have a brainstorming / hacking session from 15:30 to 17:00. The goal is to make this devroom as interesting and diverse as possible, which means we will favor talks that contrast each other. For the hacking session, proposals are welcome. We will consider running multiple parallel hacking sessions during the same time. The deadline for submissions is December 1st. If you submit late, your talk may still be considered but will have to be exceptionally interesting. The program will be finalized by December 30th.

VoIP and XMPP/Jabber rooms 2014?
by Daniel Pocock 04 Oct '13

04 Oct '13

Hi, I just heard about he lack of any dedicated VoIP and XMPP devroom at FOSDEM 2014 I don't want to criticize the FOSDEM organisers or their decision, it is a huge task to manage such an event and all the projects that participate are very commendable. I have enjoyed attending FOSDEM for many years and I hope to do so again in 2014. However, for the wider community of real-time communications developers, there are some important points that I would like to raise: - In 2013, like previous years, both the XMPP and Telephony devrooms were a huge success, thanks to the efforts of all those who participated, especially the speakers and devroom managers, of whom all did substantially more than myself. - Telephony and XMPP groups have traditionally had dinners and other side events at FOSDEM every year, many people see it as an excellent place to meet and engage with the wider community and each other. - Interest in free and open real-time communications (RTC) technology is at an all time high. The reason for this hardly needs to be mentioned. I would like to think it was due to FOSDEM 2013 running a panel on the topic in the main track. My own free communications software web sites all saw a spike in activity after FOSDEM - but since the media took an interest in this topic in June, many websites like Lumicall have been constantly running hot. It is an area of demand that the free software community would do well to tap into. - The community of free and open communications software developers need to be particularly pro-active to ensure interoperability between free software solutions. Face-to-face (and beer-to-beer) communications is a crucial part of this. One thing that comes to mind is the possibility of organising a follow-up to the 2013 panel in the main track. We posed the question "can we replace Skype in 2013?" and I regularly receive emails asking me whether it was a promise. There has been progress and there are several great speakers who could potentially come and talk about that, it could be any one of those individuals or another panel. Another possibility is that we can look to expand off-site in 2014, especially if free real-time communications developers can find a local business or other venue that is willing to let us use some kind of meeting room. There is nothing to prevent people doing that, but it would be interesting to have some feedback from FOSDEM organisers as well, for example, could the schedule include events organised in a satellite venue? Given that FOSDEM rooms often have to turn people away due to the event's immense popularity, a DIY expansion may be the ideal solution, not just for this topic. For those who are interested, the FSF Europe Free-RTC mailing list might be a good place to discuss such possibilities: https://lists.fsfe.org/mailman/listinfo/free-rtc and I would invite people to join us there. Thanks again to the FOSDEM team for your efforts for 2014 Regards, Daniel

PaaS devroom?
by Marc-Elian Bégin 03 Oct '13

Hi, I'm not sure I'm sending this to the right mailing list. If not, could you please help me find the right one? I'm interested in a PaaS devroom but I'm not sure how to get about doing that? Or are there already people proposing something similar I could rally with? Cheers, Meb
