feedback: beer event
by Pavel Simerda 07 Feb '13

For me (and probably for many others) such a big beer event with so many people and so little space is beyond something I could attend. Not sure whether anything can be done about that. Thanks for moving the main building to K, that was a great idea. Maybe it would be nice if the paper program was closer to the real one. Pavel

1 the beer event on friday was for me (an 75 years old expert in software and beer) not accessible... A crowd before the three entries of Delirium, all equipped with beer and I'm standing dry and could not enter the premises... 2 the Saturday was nice and I met who I want to see and found what I want to know 3 at Sunday I went back home, because I feel that it was to cold to walk again around the campus of ULB 4 on Saturday I had a nice lunch (baguette cheese and Liption Tea) in the small canteen 5 next year I'll skip Friday-evening beer, that's nice for my young successors; come on Saturday morning and leave Sunday evening; I'll be equipped as back-packer with very warm clothing! I'll use the same Capital Hotel that is very nice with free WiFi and good breakfast en beds! Best regards, Dick Stomp

More FOSDEM feedback

First time FOSDEM attendee, developer room manager. Two suggestions: I would encourage a voluntary name tag system. I saw some people doing that, and I really craved broader usage. It's really nice to be able to quickly scan some ones name and project information and perhaps make a connection you wouldn't otherwise make. I think trying to centralize registration and hand out name tags like at other conferences would be a huge PITA. But I would have been cheerful to hand make a name tag ahead of time. Perhaps I missed the encouragement to do so, but I would suggest encouraging that explicitly under the 'registration' section. Second, the address published on the web site does not work properly in Google maps. If you simply cut + paste the venue information, you get poor results. I had lunch with a gentleman who took the metro to the Erasme stop and lost several hours figuring out how to get to FOSDEM. If I look here: http://www.ulb.ac.be/campus/solbosch/solbosch.html (or on the English equivalent), the postal code is prefixed with a B- (so B-1050). Perhaps that's the problem; perhaps Google needs to be corrected. I thought I'd mention it regardless. With that said, I know how hard it is to always get complaints; studies show that one complaint can overshadow 10 or 15 compliments. I would be very sad if my email left an organizer with a net negative emotional boost. FOSDEM is amazing; it is an impressive and open and cheerful event. The originators and current organizers are truly amazing people who bring a marvel to the world each year. I would really appreciate it if you could construe that as at least 100 compliments <grin>. Cheers, Jeremy

What a success again, what a great event again, I learnt a lot again. I guess you all know that overcrowed rooms are frustrating, me too I turned back from some rooms with a sign "room full no more entrance for security reasons". That's sad, but that's not a bad sign, it means rather that the success was underestimated. Tips for next year?: Try to start earlier on saturday? Try to get bigger rooms? Maybe 2 days is too short, extra weekdays, or extra weekend? I would take a holiday for an extra day of Fosdem. A folding ladder that can stand on stairs in case of beamer problems might be usefull (I remember chavanne saturday afternoon). Try to get mivb/stib involved to get a little more public transport between fosdem and stations/city center/large parkings? Thanks again for this magnificent event to the organisers, the volunteers, the speakers and the sponsors. Joost

I've been at MySQL and Mozilla: MySQL: room was too small, overcrowded and when I went out, I couldn't get in again. The talks suffered from a lack of time, the slots were too short, resulted in fast speaking, skipping slides, no time for questions. Mozilla: great show. would be fine, if the slides will be made available online; -- Pirmin Braun - IntarS Unternehmenssoftware GmbH - Sinziger Str. 29a - 53424 Remagen +49 2642 308288 +49 174 9747584 - skype:pirminb www.intars.de pb(a)intars.de intars.sourceforge.net Geschäftsführer: Pirmin Braun, Ralf Engelhardt Registergericht: Amtsgericht Coburg HRB3136

Mention social seating order - or simply defrag! :o)
by Mario Ohnewald 03 Feb '13

Hello, since fosdem is getting more and more visitors, the Rooms are getting crowded. So far so good. But why do people still use the first seat in the row and not move in for the other people who might come next? That cant be that hard?! Could this problem be mentioned in one sentence in the first Keynote/Opening? Just move into the middle of the rows and it makes everybody's life a little easier ;) Thanks, Mario

Hi visiting drivers, In case you didn't know: each "unit" on the ULB campus parking is supposed to accommodate 3 cars, not 2. Thanks for your understanding!
