25 Oct '13

Valgrind developer room at FOSDEM 2014 (Brussels, Belgium, 2 February). FOSDEM is a free software event that offers open source communities a place to meet, share ideas and collaborate. It is renowned for being highly developer-oriented and brings together 5000+ hackers from all over the world. Taking place in the city of Brussels (Belgium). http://fosdem.org/ FOSDEM 2014 will take place during the weekend of Saturday, February 1st and Sunday, February 2nd. On Sunday we will have a devroom for Valgrind. Devrooms are a place for development teams to meet, discuss, hack and publicly present the project latest improvements and future directions. We will have a whole day to hang out together as Valgrind community. Please join us whether you are a Valgrind core hacker, Valgrind tool hacker, Valgrind user, Valgrind packager or hacker on a project that integrates, extends or complements Valgrind. Call For Participation We would like to organize a series of talks/discussions on various topics relevant to both core hackers, new developers, users, packagers and cross project functionality. Please do submit a talk proposal before Sunday December 8th 2013, so we can make a list of activities during the day. Some possible topics for talks/discussions are: - The recently added functional changes (for valgrind users). - State of the valgrind code base (core hackers). - Helgrind - basic design, problems and opportunities (core and tools). - Get feedback on what what kinds of new functionality would be useful. Which tools users would like to see and/or which new features for the existing tools. (valgrind developers and users). - Modify memcheck to report the last leaked pointer to a block integrate "omega" as a memcheck option or omega as a separate tool. - Better support compiled and JITted code. allowing the JIT compiler to indicate the link between the JITted code and the source code. - Valgrind and transactional memory. - How to add simple features (adding syscalls for a platform or VEX instructions for a architecture port). (new core developers). - Making Valgrind really multi-threaded, parallelising Memcheck parallelising the rest of the framework, and tools (for core hackers). - Should we continue to support MacOS? What about Valgrind on MS-Windows? Solaris? (attracting new hackers). - Redo the JIT framework to reduce baseline overheads? (core hackers). - Make Callgrind work sanely on ARM (core hackers). - Discuss release/bugfixing strategy/policy (core hackers, packagers). - Packaging valgrind for distros, handling patches, suppressions, etc. (packagers). - Valgrind/GDB integration (cross project). - Valgrind vs the compiler. Compilers like GCC and clang now have "valgrind like" features -fsanitize=address|thread|undefined. How does valgrind complement or improve on these features? - Eclipse and other visualisation tools for valgrind (cross project). - Practical examples of using Valgrind in (big) systems automatic regression testing (users). Use the FOSDEM 'pentabarf' tool to submit your proposal. https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM14/ - If necessary, create a Pentabarf account and activate it. - In the "Person" section, provide First name, Last name (in the "General" tab), Email (in the "Contact" tab) and Bio ("Abstract" field in the "Description" tab). - Submit a proposal by clicking on "Create event". - Important! Select the "Valgrind devroom" track (on the "General" tab). - Provide the title of your talk ("Event title" in the "General" tab). - Provide a description of the subject of the talk and the intended audience (in the "Abstract" field of the "Description" tab) - Provide a rough outline of the talk or goals of the session (a short list of bullet points covering topics that will be discussed) in the "Full description" field in the "Description" tab Julian, Philippe and Mark will review the proposals and organize the schedule for the day. Please feel free to suggest or discuss any ideas for the devroom on the Valgrind developer mailinglist before creating a proposal: valgrind-developers(a)lists.sourceforge.net Call For (Video) Volunteers The FOSDEM organization can provide us with equipment to record some or all of the talks in our devroom. But we need at least two volunteers to do the actual recordings. An ideal candidate for this job would be someone who is going to be watching talks in the Valgrind devroom most (or all) of the time anyway, and who doesn't mind watching after a camera and/or an audio mixer while watching the talk. While some A/V experience is obviously useful for the volunteer, it is absolutely not required; FOSDEM will provide the right gear and help set it up, and FOSDEM organizers will also provide enough information so the volunteers know what to do. This will include a live training session during the opening talk (in Janson) for those who want it. If you want to help record talks/discussions in the Valgrind devroom please let us know before the end of November. Important dates: Video Volunteers: Before 30 Nov 2013 Talk/Discussion Submission deadline: Sunday 8 Dec 2013 Devroom Schedule announcement: Sunday 15 Dec 2013 Devroom day: Sunday 2 Feb 2014 Hope to see you all at FOSDEM 2014 in the Valgrind devroom. Call for Participation for Graph Processing Devroom 2014
by Achim Friedland 22 Oct '13

22 Oct '13

FOSDEM Graph Processing Devroom 2014 Call for Participation We are happy to announce the 3rd edition of the Graph Processing Devroom co-located with FOSDEM 2014 at the ULB Campus Solbosch in Brussels, Belgium. FOSDEM is an annually software developers meeting attended by over 5000 free and open source enthusiasts from all over the world. The devroom will take place on Sunday, 2. February 2014 with a welcome at 9:45, and talks from 10AM till 18PM. For the last 5 years graph processing systems are gaining an emerging impact for processing complex semi-structured interrelated and distributed data sets. Thanks to many high quality open source implementations and outstanding community support, this movement is still winning a lot of momentum. The past year had again been full of impressive developments: e.g. Neo4j 2.0 with improved property graphs, OrientDB 1.5, the Neo4j-centric GraphDatabases book, GraphHopper for OSM routing, a new graph traversal framework called Steffi.io (imGraph), the Bitsy database and Pixy query language, Structr a CMS ontop of graphs and even the SAP Hana in-memory database solution joined the movement. In previous devrooms a lot of great presentations and demos had been given and substantiated discussions took place. Therefore, also in 2014 we will again give researchers, geeks and open source hackers the possibility of an awesome meetup for showing each other their recent work and improvements. This includes: - Graph Query Languages and user-friendly APIs - (Distributed) Graph Processing Frameworks - Geographic Information Systems and Graphs (Routing et al.) - Semantic Graphs (RDF) - (Large-Scale) Graph Visualization - Graphs and the Internet-of-Things - Real-life application of graph processing including industry experience - Graph Benchmarks This list is not closed, other related topics are always welcome. -= Participate =- Convinced? Interested in giving a talk or presenting a demo? We are looking for high quality technical (non-marketing) submissions, ranging from principles to practice and interesting to attendees with widely different backgrounds. Talks should be 20 to 30 minutes, lightning talks 10 to 15 minutes and consist of a presentation supported by slides and/or demos. Any degree of interactivity is highly welcome. We also welcome other activity proposals different from “traditional” project presentations and talks. All submissions should be based on free and open software solutions or free and open APIs. This year we want to try something new and put a specific emphasis on two selected areas. Nevertheless other topics are still open for any of your proposals. - *Geo Information Systems using Graphs*, ranging from OpenStreetMap to E-Mobility routing solutions, as we think that mobile mapping libraries and applications are becoming more and more important in our daily life. - *Natural Language Processing via Graphs*, as we think the best way to make the people aware of the dangers of an omnipresent Big Brother is to teach them the algorithms via running code. To suggest a talk, go to the FOSDEM submission system[8] and follow the instructions ("Create Account” / “Create Event"). Please make sure to select the "GraphDevroom" track and include at least the following information: - Your name, nick, contact information (public/only for orga) and a short biography - The title and a short abstract describing your presentation/demo/talk (max. 500 words) - Intended audience and goal of the talk (e.g., “Beginner”, “Advanced”, "Analysts, helping them to discover and visualize patterns" or "Developers, trying to optimize processing of highly connected data sets") - The desired length of your time slot (typical 30 min. incl. 5 minutes for Q/A) - Links to background information on the given talk for the hungry and impatient - Links to your previous talks, code snippets or repositories -= Important dates =- Submission deadline: 10. Dec 2013 Notification of accepted speakers: 13. Dec 2013 Preliminary Schedule: 15. Dec 2013 Publication of the final schedule: 10. Jan 2014 Devroom day: 2. Feb 2014 -= The Orgteam =- - Achim Friedland, Software Architect at Belectric ITS GmbH. - Lutz Lukas, symanto research GmbH & Co KG. - Martin Junghanns, University of Leipzig - Pere Urbon-Bayes, Software Architect at Belectric ITS GmbH. - Peter Karich, GraphHopper The crew can be reached via: fosdem2014(a)graphdevroom.org -= Stay in Contact =- In order to stay in contact and be updated with the latest news of the event, you can either go to Twitter and follow @GraphDevroom[3] or search for #graphdevroom, or goto Google and subscribe to our Google Group[4] or become a member of our Google+ community[5]. CFP for Internet of Things Devroom
by Pieter Hintjens 11 Oct '13

11 Oct '13

Next February 2nd, we're organizing a [http://fosdem.org FOSDEM] devroom for the Internet of Things. We're now calling for proposals. Do you have an interesting project you'd like to present to 5,000+ free and open source developers? If you have a project you'd like to present, or a talk you want to give, please submit it via [https://penta.fosdem.org/submission FOSDEM's Pentabarf] web tool. You will create an account (if you don't have one from a previous year), and select the "Internet of Things devroom" as the track. We'll discuss and select talks on [https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!forum/iot-devroom the Google iot-devroom group]. Anyone who wants to join in the review process, please just join that group. The organizers will take the final decision on talks if there is no consensus. We'll look for talks that include a technical/developer oriented discussion or showcase covering one or more of the following topics: * FOSS solutions for machine-to-machine communication on small embedded devices. * Distributed FOSS applications in any field of interest for autonomous/self-controlled devices, (e.g. domotics, automotive, etc. * Presentation of embedded devices with one or more possibilities to join a network. * Infrastructure related (TCP/IP, mesh networking, message queuing, cross-layer solutions). * Real-life problematics and their solution (Cost of maintenance, power management, reachability). * Interoperability solutions for heterogeneous applications, devices, protocols, media. All presentations must be fully FOSS, and related to software development. The devroom will last one day, with a welcome at 9:45, and talks from 10:00 to 17:00. Provisionally, talks will last 25 minutes each, and we will have a brainstorming / hacking session from 15:30 to 17:00. The goal is to make this devroom as interesting and diverse as possible, which means we will favor talks that contrast each other. For the hacking session, proposals are welcome. We will consider running multiple parallel hacking sessions during the same time. The deadline for submissions is December 1st. If you submit late, your talk may still be considered but will have to be exceptionally interesting. The program will be finalized by December 30th.
