Dear All, We love the mobile schedule apps! You can find a list of apps we know about here: https://fosdem.org/2013/schedule/mobile/ Do you know about more apps? More platforms? Tell us about it! To thank the mobile app developers, and to stimulate the continued development of the apps, we are offering a free FOSDEM t-shirt to the mobile app developers! Here is the deal: - The app must work with the 2013 schedule (preferably pre-loaded) - Must be open-source, with browseable sources - Simple forks don't count, ports to other platforms do if build scripts are available - Only applicable to the developers that will be at FOSDEM in person To get the t-shirt(s), the lead developer of the mobile app should contact us on info(a)fosdem.org with the list of developers that will be at FOSDEM and that have made a significant contribution to the project. (We reserve the right to modify the conditions of the offer to avoid abuse or clear out ambiguities.) by Benny Siegert 09 Nov '13

09 Nov '13

Hello all, FOSDEM 2014 will take place on 1–2 February, 2014, in Brussels, Belgium. Just like in the last years, there will be both a BSD booth and a developer's room (on Saturday). The topics of the devroom include all BSD operating systems. Every talk is welcome, from internal hacker discussion to real-world examples and presentations about new and shiny features. The default duration for talks will be 45 minutes including discussion. Feel free to ask if you want to have a longer or a shorter slot. If you already submitted a talk last time, please note that the procedure is slightly different. To submit your proposal, visit https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM14/ and follow the instructions to create an account and an “event”. Please select “BSD devroom” as the track. (Click on “Show all” in the top right corner to display the full form.) Please include the following information in your submission: * The title and subtitle of your talk (please be descriptive, as titles will be listed with ~500 from other projects) * A short abstract of one paragraph * A longer description if you wish to do so * Links to related websites/blogs etc. The deadline for submissions is December 20, 2013. The talk committee, consisting of Daniel Seuffert, Marius Nünnerich and Benny Siegert, will consider the proposals. If yours has been accepted, you will be informed by e-mail before the end of the year. Best regards, Benny Siegert (for the BSD devroom organizers)

[CFP] Testing and Automation Devroom
by R. Tyler Croy 08 Nov '13

08 Nov '13

Full marked up version here: <http://fosdem-devroom.org/wiki/Testing_and_Automation_(2014)> Members of the Jenkins, Selenium and others will be hosting a devroom focused on testing and automation on Sunday February 2nd, 2014. We invite members of the broader open source community to submit one (or more) 30-40 minute talk proposal(s) OR one (or more) 10 minute lightning talk proposal(s) by 23:59 UTC on November 30th 2013. We will notify all those submitting proposals about their acceptance by December 10th 2013. --- This is the second year for the Testing/Automation dev room at FOSDEM. This room is about creating better software through a focus on testing and automation at all layers of the stack. From creating libraries and end-user applications all the way down to packaging, distribution and deployment. Testing and automation is not isolated to a single toolchain, language or platform, there is much to learn and share regardless of background! --- Since this is the second year we're hosting the Testing and Automation dev room, here are some ideas of what we would like to see, and what worked last year, they're just ideas though! * Testing in the real, open source world * How has your open source project has gone from not-so-good to absolutely-great by applying testing best practices (TDD, BDD, ATDD, etc) * How to test and develop for open source projects (e.g. test-driving operating systems, big projects, ensuring quality of Linux distros, etc) * Talk about how your project is automated to make contributors' lives better (and/or on-boarding new contributors) * Cool Tools (good candidates for lightning talks) * Explain/demo how your open source tool made developing quality software better * Combining projects/plugins/tools to build amazing things "Not enough people in the open source community know how to use $X, but here's a tutorial on how to use $X to make your project better." To submit a talk proposal (you can submit multiple proposals if you'd like) with Pentabarf (https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM14) the FOSDEM paper submission system. We look forward to seeing you there! Cheers - R. Tyler Croy -------------------------------------- Code: https://github.com/rtyler Chatter: https://twitter.com/agentdero rtyler(a)jabber.org

FOSDEM 2014 Legal Issues DevRoom Call For Participation
by Tom Marble 04 Nov '13

04 Nov '13

FOSDEM 2014 Legal Issues Devroom CFP This is the Call for Participation in the FOSDEM 2014 Legal Issues DevRoom General information ------------------- FOSDEM [0], the Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting, is a free and non-commercial two-day weekend event organized each February in Brussels, Belgium. It is highly developer-oriented and brings together 5000+ participants from all over the world. This year FOSDEM will take place on February 1st and 2nd 2014. Legal and Policy Issues DevRoom ------------------------------- This Legal and Policy Issues DevRoom is designed to cover topics of Free Software and Open Source legal and governance policy. While proposals for introductory topics in this area are welcome, we are specifically seeking proposals on advanced topics in Free Software and/or Open Source policy, copyright, trademark, patent and other legal and governance topics of direct relevance to Free Software and Open Source developers. For more background on the Legal and Policy Issues DevRoom, and to get a good sense of the breadth of topics considered appropriate, please check out the talks from previous years [1] [2] many of which have been published on the Free as in Freedom oggcast [3]. Call for Participation ---------------------------- The goal for this DevRoom is to foster in-depth discussion about complex policy, legal and licensing issues that face the software freedom community today. Proposals are sought for talks, panel discussions, and guided discussion groups that can investigate these sorts of issues. Being a lawyer is not a requirement for submitting a proposal. Being a "leader" of a FLOSS project or organization is also not a requirement. We wish to promote speaker diversity and in particular strongly encourage women to submit proposals! Example topics might include: - Copyleft vs. permissive licensing: What is a policy case for copyleft? If so what form should it take? - How is software freedom important in ensuring privacy and security? - What defines a Free Software and/or Open Source project? - Do traditional Free Software values face some level of cooption from for-profit corporate interest? If so, how? - Copyleft licensing models and how they relate to business models. Are there some business models that are license-permissible but bad for community building? On the other side, does your license choice limit or expand your community? - Eroding software freedom in the proliferation of closed computing devices such as mobile phones and tablets - Copyleft enforcement and compliance planning from a developer perspective. What is the future of GPL enforcement? Is it working? - What is its impact on adoption of copyleft? - How does the 'so-called' software patent war impact Free Software and Open Source? - Copyleft license compatibility. What are the challenges of code base merges when various licenses are in use? How does a compatibility analysis between licenses work? Timeline ------------ 2013-11-03: CFP open 2013-12-01: CFP deadline 2013-12-15: Speakers notified 2013-12-30: Agenda published on FOSDEM site Submitting a Proposal ------------------------------ You may submit a 25 minute or 50 minute talk proposal. The committee may suggest an alternate duration or propose combining similar talks into a panel. It is quite likely that the talks in the Legal and Poicy Issues DevRoom will be audio and video recorded. By submitting a proposal you agree to license the content of your talk under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (CC BY-SA) license. FOSDEM is asking potential speakers to use Pentabarf for submissions this year. While we encourage this, we recognize that Pentabarf may be difficult to use and so we will also or additionally accept proposals emailed to [5]. Proposals thus emailed must be submitted in plain text format (and include an short biography). Here's what you need to do to submit a talk using Pentabarf: - Go to Pentabarf [4] - Select FOSDEM 2014 - Follow the instructions to submit a talk - Select "Legal issues devroom" as the "Track". - Select “Lecture” as “Event Type” - In the “General” tab please list a brief abstract listing your name (and the name(s) of any additional speaker(s). Please fill in the “Full Description” - Add any links as appropriate in the “Links” tab - be sure to click “Save” on the lower right! - Please have each speaker login and add a brief bio in the “Description” section of their “Person” page. - be sure to click “Save” on the lower right! FOSDEM2014 CfP: Game development
by Nils Kneuper 27 Oct '13

27 Oct '13

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 FOSDEM2014 Call for Participation: Game development FOSDEM2014 will host a devroom centered on the development of Free and Open Source Games. Possible speakers (and topic suggestions) are invited to make their proposals. The game development devroom takes place on Saturday, February 1st, 10:00 - 18:00 (exact times might still change). The room (incl size) and building are not known yet. As topics anything regarding Open Source Game Development is allowed and wanted. This includes talks about game specific areas like AI development as well as community integration, artwork (graphics and sound), translations in the context of games, integration of usermade content, cross platform porting (e.g. to mobile devices like phones) or whatever else you might find. If you are interested in seeing a list of last years talks, please head over to [1] and [2]. FOSDEM is a conference centered on technical topics, as a result, the talks ought to cover technical issues that are relevant to open source game development. Speakers are encouraged to draw on their own experience as game developers in order to convey a message that is of interest to the game development community as a whole. The sessions are not limited to just holding a talk. If you have an idea e.g. moderating a discussion round, this can also be a session. To submit a talk, please create an account at the conference's submission system [3] and select the devroom as the talk's track. Should there be any problems, please send a mail to the devroom mailing list [4]. In your submission, be sure to include: - Title and approximate length of the talk (in the General tab), - the correct track (should be the games dev, also in the General tab), - a short abstract (in the Description tab, please also list or associated project here). Talks should not exceed 45 minutes. To help us schedule, please indicate whether your talk is flexible in its length. Deadline for submissions is December 1st, 23:00 GMT+1. We will announce acceptance and hopefully a rough schedule before Christmas. This year the FOSDEM team plans to offer video recordings of every devroom. But they do need our help to accomplish this. The task required here is some people who tend to be in the devroom (almost) all day anyway and help with looking after the camera(s) and/or audio mixer while watching the talks. If a speaker does not want to be recorded, please tell me at latest right before the talk. The videos are planned to be shown on the fosdem website at [5] once the event is over. The planned license is CC BY-SA. If this does not work for you, different licenses might also be possible. FOSDEM can not offer reimbursements for travel or hotel costs, so every speaker will have to cover the costs themselves. For more and further information please make sure to subscribe to the mailing list of the devroom. The list was reset prior to the event so you will have to resubscribe to receive messages.
