News : Call For Main Tracks

The *Main Tracks* are two simultaneous lectures given in the two biggest rooms giving a seat to 550 and 1400 visitors. They tend to host lectures for a broader audience than the specialized Developer Rooms. .... You can send in your abstract if you meet the following conditions: * The subject is about free or open source software development. * The proposed lecture is technical. Our visitors do not come to FOSDEM for a marketing talk or a simple overview of the features of your product. * A Main Track talk is given by one person, who is a developer of the project. * By sending in your abstract you acknowledge that you keep the dates of 6-7 Feburary 2010 free in case your proposal has been selected. * The travel expenses and hotel bookings of main track speakers are covered by FOSDEM. Speakers are kindly asked to book their travel themselves while FOSDEM manages the hotel. Bringing your partner is encouraged but his/her costs are not covered by FOSDEM. (except the hotel) * All Main Track talks will be recorded. The recordings and slides will be made available freely, shortly after the event. .... Also note that in order to be granted a Main Track talk, you will have to follow these rules: * You can use your own computer for the presentation if you want, please warn us in advance if you don't have one. * The speaker must attend the main track lecture before his, in order to guarantee a smooth switch between speakers. * A speaker is given exactly 50 minutes time, include questions and answers. A moderator will be there showing you signs of 15, 10 and 5 minutes left. * You will need to keep proofs of your expenses, reimbursement will be done after the event. If you are interested in doing a Main Track talk, submit the form below ! Good luck in the selection process ! For more information check out: http://fosdem.org/2010/call_for_main_tracks

News : Android, iPhone and maemo developers wanted
by info＠fosdem.org 12 Sep '09

We a currently coding a schedule-application for the Android platform. This application will have the following features: (all off-line) * list the lectures, ltalks and stands * show the details/abstract of a lecture * select favorites so you can find your selection back easily * search for lectures based on strings in the title/abstract * find the right room easily using a map (todo) * alert you when your favorite lectures start (todo) * update the list of lectures trough the web (todo) * data-input is currently JSON based (still working on converting XML to JSON using XSLT) The code is based on the googleio2009 [1] application. If you're an Android developer and want to help please contact Christophe [2]. In the spirit of this conference there is probably no need to say it's opensource code. iPhone, maemo and other developers can also contact Christophe [3] if they'd like to write an (opensource) application for their device. He will assist you where necessary and give you an XML or a JSON database of the lectures. Android

Hi open source enthusiasts and FOSDEM crew, Have any of you thought about the representation of Android at the FOSDEM 2010 event? Android open source related development is still slim in comparison with other projects, but this might change fast and many people might be interested in getting started on Android. Could this warrant a small presence, in the form of a dev room or a stand? There are three components to Android that are of interest to FOSDEM: - The open source Android OS itself. Might even want to try to get Google/OHA members involved somehow. - Open source apps written for Android. Projects certainly exist but are often still in an inception phase. See https://launchpad.net/+search?field.text=android , http://www.ohloh.net/search?q=android , http://code.google.com/intl/nl-BE/search/#q=android , or search yourself. - Android ROM modding. Groetjes/Regards, -- pjv https://launchpad.net/~pjv

Using biglumber services for the gpg Key signing party ?
by Ludovic Hirlimann 24 Aug '09

24 Aug '09

Hi, I recently started using my gpg again - after a year or two of inactivity. I've participated to previous Fosdems key signing parties in previous editions of Fosdem, and it usually ends up in a interesting mess. The best organized one was one where we could print ourselves the complete keyring, that was generated by sending our public keys to a know email address. But This doesn't prevent the work that needs to be done afterwards. One of the annoying parts is when you sign a key and that key is never counter signed. I'd like to propose to use biglumber.com's services to organize the technical part of the key-signing party. I know this means relying on a third party service but I think It would make dealling with the organization of the event way easier. How would this work ? 1) Someone would create a Fosdem 2010 event with a valid date on biglumber.com 2) The event is announced like each year and a link to the biglumber event is given with a End date to add your key to it. 3) People wishing to participate to the event can add their key to the event. 4) People should print the event key list (and use it at the party), before coming to Fosdem and after the End date given in 2. With this most of the technical parts for the organization is solved. In order to add your key to the key ring users need to register on biglumber which some of the attendees might object. But the good news about having to register is that people then can use the biglumber escrow service - meaning that their signature will only be released and updated - only when both person that have signed have uploaded. This part of the process make the aftermath a bit longer but insures that key signing will be symetric. Thoughts, ideas , wdyt ? Ludovic ps, and no I'm not affiliated with biglumbers.com -- http://perso.hirlimann.net/~ludo/blog/ http://flickr.com/photos/lhirlimann
