FOSDEM/Brussels Google Maps Overlay
by David "Lefty" Schlesinger 15 Jan '10

15 Jan '10

FOSDEMers: I¹ve set up a ³Brussels Places² (had it since last year, actually) overlay on Google Maps that may be helpful to out-of-towners. Got some sights and a bunch of restaurants on there, as well as the conference venue, train stations, a couple of hotels, etc. It¹s open to collaboration, so please feel free to add to it. http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&ie=UTF8&hq=atom ium&hnear=Atomium,+1020+Brussels,+Belgium&msa=0&msid=110114885556079745619.0 004618c8ec6601ab09f3&ll=50.849415,4.357796&spn=0.061235,0.12085&z=13 I expect to be adding to it between now and the conference myself. Hope it¹s helpful. Enjoy!

News : FOSDEM multiplies things by 10
by info＠fosdem.org 14 Jan '10

14 Jan '10

For our 10th edition we multiply by 10. * The Spouses / Partners Tour [1] will have two groups a day, doubling the capacity. * Last year we introduced the FOSDEM bus [2] driving every 50 minutes on Sunday afternoon. And extra bus will lower the waiting time to max 25 minutes. * For the catering [3]: expect a second fries van. So let's halve the queue. * We ask our visitors to apply seat defragmentation [4] to double the capacity of the rooms. As people complain there are too many interesting lectures at once, we will keep the number of talks to max 230 like the previous edition. PS: (There are 10 types of people, those who understand binary and those who don't.) Somewhat OT Perhaps...
by David "Lefty" Schlesinger 13 Jan '10

13 Jan '10

I am conducting a survey within the FLOSS communities on attitudes toward FLOSS and proprietary software. If you think you¹d like to participate, please take a look at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/F8DG25Q It's not directly related to FOSDEM, per se, but I do want to get the broadest coverage possible of the FLOSS community. Thanks in advance for your participation!

News : Participating stands
by info＠fosdem.org 13 Jan '10

13 Jan '10

The stands have been decided since a long time, but we had not yet published the list on our website. In total 31 projects were selected, you can find a list of them in schedule [1]. *Update:* we forgot to list RepRap [2]! The keynote talks are already in the schedule too, as well as most of the main track talks. We are still making final arrangements, so the timing is missing for some of them. In the coming days and weeks, the schedule will grow to include the devroom and lightning talks. For more information, or to fill in the form check out: http://fosdem.org/2010/news/participating-stands [1] http://fosdem.org/2010/stands [2] http://reprap.org/bin/view/Main/WebHome

News : Call for volunteers
by info＠fosdem.org 13 Jan '10

13 Jan '10

FOSDEM 2010: nearly there... And you can help us make it a success again. Visitors of previous editions will probably have noticed our enthusiastic team of weekend volunteers who help us bend the chaos into order. Feel like helping out this year? Here's your chance: don't be shy and just sign up [1]! Tasks that require your help include, but are not limited to: * Setting up the venue * Manning the infodesk * Handling the donations * Translating for our foreign guests * Handling taxis for speakers * Moderating the main tracks and the lightning talks * Cleaning up after the event * ... Think this sounds like fun? So did our previous volunteers, some of which you'll meet again this year. So wait no longer and mail us at volunteers(a)fosdem.org [2], and become part of the team now! All help is appreciated, even if it's just a couple of hours in between talks. Helping hands are especially welcome on Friday from 9am onwards. If you're in the neighborhood, just come to the venue [3], we'll need you! PS: It speaks for itself that we wouldn't want our Friday volunteers to miss the beer event, so after we wrap up we're all going together. See you at FOSDEM! For more information, or to fill in the form check out: http://fosdem.org/2010/news/call-volunteers [1] mailto:volunteers@fosdem.org [2] mailto:volunteers@fosdem.org [3] http://fosdem.org/2010/practical/transportation

Women - roomshare
by Sumana Harihareswara 13 Jan '10

13 Jan '10

Are there any women going to FOSDEM 2010 who could spare space on their hotel room floor, or want to share a room with another woman (me)? I'd prefer staying in or near the Renaissance Hotel, near the Brussels-Luxembourg railway station, because that's where my colleagues will be. http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/brubr-renaissance-brussels-hotel/ I plan on arriving Thursday night or Friday morning and leaving Monday the 8th. Please email me offlist to coordinate. Best, Sumana Harihareswara http://brainwane.net P.S. I didn't see any women posting about FOSDEM 2010 in the Couchsurfing group at http://www.couchsurfing.org/group.html?gid=16380 but that might be a good place to coordinate roomshares in general.

Fosdem - good for me?
by Maciej Rumianowski 12 Jan '10

12 Jan '10

Hi, I would like to know if FOSDEM is right for me. I'm student of Warsaw University of technology(2nd year) and I'm just a beginner in Free and Open Source world as in whole Computer Science. I know something. But comparing it to your knowledge and experience I'm a tiny mouse. I'm interested in Web Developing, Linux related and Projects Management. Best Regards, Maciej Rumianowski
