CfP Safety and Open Source
by Shaun Mooney 10 Dec '20

10 Dec '20

Hi all, Please see the CfP for the Safety and Open Source dev room below. Kind regards, Shaun Mooney --- # FOSDEM 2021 (Online) - Safety and Open Source Call for Participation Submission deadline : 26/12/2020 ## About FOSDEM FOSDEM is a free event for software developers to meet, share ideas and collaborate. * FOSDEM is free to attend. There is no registration. * FOSDEM [website](https://fosdem.org/2021/) * FOSDEM [code of conduct](https://fosdem.org/2021/practical/conduct/) ## New rules / changes since last year For obvious reasons, this year the event will not take place in a physical location but online. * The reference time will be [Brussels local lime (CET).](https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/belgium/brussels) * Talks will be pre-recorded in advance, and streamed during the event * Q/A session will be live * A facility will be provided for people watching to chat between themselves * A facility will be provided for people watching to submit questions ## Key dates * Submission deadline: 26 December 2020 * Announcement of selected talks: 31 December 2020 * Conference dates 6 & 7 February 2021 online * Safety and Open Source devroom date: Saturday 6 February 2021 online ## The Dev Room The Safety and Open Source Software dev room is dedicated to everything relating to using Open Source Software for safety critical applications. The advantages of Free and Open Source Software are numerous. More than ever companies choose to use FOSS in their projects, however the world of safety is behind the curve. Software developed for safety applications typically employs traditional development practices that, although well-used, are increasingly outdated, and the code is often closed source. This is because safety standards are stringent, and it is important that safety applications have rigorous quality assurance practices applied during development. Sadly, this means that using FOSS which has not been developed to a safety standard from the start is extremely difficult. This dev room is looking for talks which can help to showcase how we can use FOSS in safety applications, including overcoming obstacles faced, legal issues for industry and contributors, and how we can advance state-of-the-art safety practices to allow industry to benefit from the many advantages that FOSS provides. ## Talks We recommend about 45 minutes including discussion for talks, although will consider variations (please include the talk length in your submission). Example topics include (but are not limited to): * Pros and cons of using Open Source software in safety * Examples of Open Source Software being used in safety applications today * Legal and moral implications for contributors who have their code used in safety applications * Safety analysis techniques for complex software systems * Requirements elicitation, and verification and validation techniques (including creating argumentation to prove that software is safe enough to use) * What we need to do as FOSS creators to shift the industry mentality around the use of FOSS vs. current safety standards * Open Source Development practices and how we can map these to practices such as the V-model which are needed for current industry safety standards (e.g. IEC 61508, ISO 26262 ect.) ## For accepted talks * Presentations have to be pre-recorded and streamed before the event. * Once your talk is accepted, we will assign you a deputy to help you to produce the pre-recorded content. * The deputy will review the content and ensure it has the required quality. They are also responsible for ensuring that the content is ready to broadcast on the day. * During the stream of your talk, you must be available online for the Q/A session. ## Submit a talk Visit the [FOSDEM 2021 Pentabarf website](https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM21), and if you don't have one already create an account. Create an "event" and click on "Show all" in the top right corner to display the full form. Your submission must include the following information * Your contact Email * The title and subtitle of your talk (please be descriptive, as titles will be listed with ~500 from other projects) * Select "Safety and Open Source" as the track. * A short abstract of one paragraph * A longer description if you wish to do so * Links to related websites / blogs etc. ## Contact If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us: * Shaun Mooney: shaun.mooney(a)codethink.co.uk * Beth White: beth.white(a)codethink.co.uk

Hello all, The date of the submission deadline for recordings was a typo. I have updated the CfP at the wiki link https://libreplanet.org/wiki/FOSDEM2021-devroom-declarative-and-minimalisti… to the 7th of January. Of course keep in mind that this is not a hard deadline, and we can change this based on the current situation. So please don't worry :) Thank you! [CFP] Open Research Tools and Technologies devroom
by Paul 09 Dec '20

09 Dec '20

Open Research Tools & Technologies devroom CFP https://research-fosdem.github.io/ We invite developers or users of open tools and technologies used in a research context to contribute to the FOSDEM 2021 conference. We understand research as the general process of inquiry and knowledge production such as scientific research, investigative journalism, NGOs fieldwork, etc. We seek talks about: - New releases of open source software of research tools or technologies. - Feedback on open technology stacks used in research contexts (e.g., scientific research, journalistic inquiry, archive creation or publication, etc.) which collect, analyse, document, visualize, and/or share data. - Tool design and implementation for specific research contexts, e.g. how to hold an algorithm accountable to social scientists, how to foster better reproducibility, replicability, repeatability, and interoperability thanks to FLOSS, how to cope with biases of a chart for a data journalist, etc. - Issues and opportunities about bridging tech culture with research environments (research labs, libraries, newsrooms, museums, hackerspaces, makers labs etc.) including community building, organizational, legal and financial aspects. Any subjects related to open source technologies in research contexts are welcome even if not in this list. Talks will last around 20-40 minutes + 5-10 minutes Q&A, have to be in English. The video of the talk has to be pre-recorded in January 2021. The Q/A session will be live. The video will be published under Creative Commons CC-BY licence on the FOSDEM video recordings archive. HOW TO SUBMIT Important dates: - Proposal Deadline: 21st Dec 2020 23:59 CET - Accepted Talk video upload Deadline: 15th Jan 2021 23:59 CET - Online conference with live Q&A: 6th Feb 2021 Submit early if you can, as we will evaluate the proposals as they come because of this year’s special circumstances (very tight schedule) Submissions must include: - Abstract - Session type (Lecture or Lightning Talk) - Expected prior knowledge / intended audience - Speaker bio - Links to code / slides / material for the talk (optional) - Links to previous talks by the speaker (optional) Submission process is managed in the Pentabarf system used by the FOSDEM conference. Apply for a talk: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM21 By submitting your recorded talk you agree to have it made available publicly… forever. When submitting your talk in Pentabarf, make sure to select the ‘Open Research Tools and Technologies Devroom’ as the ‘Track’. If you already have a Pentabarf account from a previous FOSDEM event, please reuse it. Create an account if, and only if, you don’t have one from a previous year. If you have any issues with Pentabarf, do not despair: contact us at research-devroom[at]lists.fosdem.org More about the Open Research Technologies devroom https://research-fosdem.github.io/ The Open Research Technologies devroom addresses FLOSS developers in a broad community concerned with research production and curation: scientists, engineers, journalists, archivists, curators, activists. The tools and technologies targeted are typically creating, handling or sharing knowledge artifacts: data, academic papers, books, collections, web contents, algorithms, artworks. This devroom provides a place and time to discuss the issues related to the creation and usage of open research technologies, with the ambition to foster discussions between designers, developers and users, bridging multiple knowledge-based communities together, and with the broader FLOSS community. The Open Research Technologies devroom aims to: - Allow knowledge-based tool developers to publicize their effort and become aware of other FLOSS projects. - Facilitate the pooling of coding efforts on (often poorly funded) tools. - Create a network where otherwise isolated developers, research engineers can share common FLOSS concerns. - Provide social recognition for people who work in fields where designing and developing tools is less considered than usual outcomes (e.g. not publishing papers in research, not writing investigation in data journalism, etc).

CFP for the mozilla dev room
by Ludovic Hirlimann 08 Dec '20

08 Dec '20

Hello fellow Mozillians, It’s that time of the year again! The Call for Papers for Europe’s largest FLOSS event, FOSDEM, happening on February 6th & 7th 2020 in Brusselson the Internet is now officially open. Just like for the past 19 years, Mozilla is going to host a Developer room at FOSDEM 2021 for a full day and we would love to see and hear all your wonderful talks. For those of you that have no idea what FOSDEM is about, I recommend taking a look at their website (https://fosdem.org <https://fosdem.org/>) Developer rooms are assigned to self-organising groups to work together on open source projects and to discuss topics relevant to a broader subset of the community. Proposals should not be limited to the list but those are the ones that stand a higher chance of getting accepted. However, we do encourage you to submit talks on subjects that are not on the list, some of our best talks were on subjects we did not expect at all. However, please keep in mind that the public at FOSDEM is quite technical and knowledgeable about open-source in general. If you want any help or feedback to write your proposal, please get in touch with me. I am happy to put you in relation with someone that can help you to perfect your proposal and/or give you useful feedback. The list of suggested topics is the following: * Web Technologies: HTML, CSS & Layouts * MDN Web Docs * Firefox Developer Tools * Firefox in General * Privacy & Security * Performance * Network on Web browsers * Diversity & Inclusion * … Essential infos: * Submit your proposal on Pentabarf (https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM21 <https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM21>) , you can find a tutorial about how to use Pentabarf courtesy of the wonderful folks at the Go Devroom (https://eyskens.me/beginners-guide-to-pentabarf/) * Talk proposals deadline: 26th of December at midnight (anywhere in the world). * Acceptance/rejection notice: At the latest for the 31st of December. * Duration: 15 to 45 minutes talks (including questions) would be preferred, anything over 45 minutes and we might ask you to shorten it to fit in the 45 minutes time frame. * You need to be able to pre-record (which implies to have appropriate equipment to do so) your talk for the 21st of January and be available on the 7th of February at the time of your talk broadcast to answer questions. * If you encounter any issues with the proposal tool, please get in touch with me! Community Participation Guidelines The Mozilla devroom respects Mozilla’s community participation guidelines along with the FOSDEM Code of Conduct. These guidelines cover our behaviour as participants, facilitators, space wranglers, staff, volunteers, vendors, and anyone else involved in making the Mozilla devroom possible. -- https://hacking-mind.blogspot.com

FOSDEM <https://fosdem.org> is the Free and Open source Software Developers’ European Meeting, a free and non-commercial two-day weekend event that offers *all* open source contributors a place to meet, share ideas, learn and collaborate. After 6 successful years we will host another design devroom at FOSDEM 2021 (virtually)! The Open Source Design devroom will take place online over the weekend of 6th and 7th February 2021. The *exact times will be confirmed in the coming months*. Due to the global health situation, FOSDEM will take place completely online. There will be talks about design work on free, libre and open source projects. *We invite you to send in your submissions about design work on free, libre and open source projects.* We mean ‘design’ in the broadest sense: user research, interface and interaction design, information architecture, visual design, typography, illustration, iconography, spatial, accessibility (and anything you can think of) – all in the context of open source projects, which we believe introduces unique challenges. Designers and developers working with designers (or on a design-minded project) are welcome to submit proposals. Possible topics include: * FOSS design tools * Unique challenges that open source brings * Design techniques and deliverables * Design/engineering collaboration approaches * User engagement and design research activities * Project case studies If you’re interested in seeing all previous talks, have a look at the schedule, and videos for 2019 <https://archive.fosdem.org/2019/schedule/track/open_source_design/> and 2018 <https://archive.fosdem.org/2018/schedule/track/open_source_design/>, Talk submission details Due to FOSDEM 2021 being fully online there are some important changes - * Talks must be pre-recorded in advance. The talk will then be streamed during the event. * Speakers are responsible for recording their talks * After the talk stream, there will be a live Question & Answer session * People watching the talk stream will be to chat online, and submit questions * The reference time will be Brussels local lime (Central European Time) For accepted talks For talks which are accepted: * All speakers will be assigned a devroom contact to support them and answer questions before the event * All speakers will need to record their talk and upload it to FOSDEM’s website * The deadline for uploading talk videos is expected to be in the first two weeks of January * The talk videos will be reviewed to ensure they have the required quality * During the stream of the talk, the speaker must be available online for the Q/A session. * Final timeslots will be co-ordinated with speakers after all talks have been finalised Recording and licensing of talks By submitting a proposal you consent to be recorded, and agree to license the content of your talk under a Creative Commons (CC-BY) license. What and how to submit Submission format 20-minute presentations Submission deadline 23rd December 2020 Notification about accepted talks We expect to notify people if their talk has been accepted or not by approximately 31st of December. Call for Participation: Legal & Policy Issues DevRoom at FOSDEM 2021

########################################################################### Call For Participation Legal and Policy Issues DevRoom at FOSDEM 2021 CONFERENCE DATE: Saturday & Sunday 6-7 February 2021 in Brussels, Belgium DEVROOM DATE: Saturday 6 February 2021 CFP DEADLINE: Sunday 20 December 2020 at 23:59 AoE (Anywhere on Earth) SPEAKERS NOTIFIED: Sunday 5 January 2021 (on or before) Quick CFP Overview (TL;DR) ========================== Hackers, developers, contributors and lawyers alike are encouraged to submit on any FOSS-related policy or legal topic. We seek proposals for 30 or 50 minute talks that address issues of software freedom project policies and legal issues that extend beyond and/or are orthogonal to technical issues faced by projects. For ideas about talk topics see the background information below. You can respond to this CFP by creating a user account on Pentabarf and creating one (or more) talk proposals by 20 December 2020. See details below. CFP Details =========== Copyright law provides many of the basic legal underpinnings of Free Software. Patent and trademark law and legal frameworks relating to data privacy and security also have significant relevance to Free Software development. Governance and policies around free software projects (beyond mere outbound licensing) set the rules for collaboration and can be critical to a project's success. Also governments, institutions and administrations increasingly rely on Free Software and regulate and govern this area. Our community has substantial expertise in this area yet there are few venues to discuss these matters in a forum open to all. Hackers, developers, contributors, lawyers, policy experts, and community leaders all possess expertise in these matters. This DevRoom seeks proposals for 30 or 50 minute talks. Sessions should address issues of software freedom project policies and legal issues that extend beyond and/or are orthogonal to technical issues faced by projects and government regulations. Such topics could include, but aren't necessarily limited to: * What legislation should we be watching, what has been recently enacted, and what coming soon? What effect could these have on software freedom? * Who controls the copyright, trademark, or patent licensing, release plans, CLA administration, or security bug reporting policies of your project, and why? What challenges have you faced in these policy areas and how are you seeking to change it? * How is your project governed? Do you have a non-profit organization, or a for-profit company that primarily controls your project, or neither? Do you wish your project governance was different? Who decided your governance initially? What politics (good and bad) have occurred around your governance choices and how have you changed your policy? Does your project have a "shadow governance", whereby technical governance is open and fair, but some entity has its own opaque political structure that influences your project? Are you worried that your project might and you don't know? Are you exploring any new solutions for governance? * How do ethical issues intersect with your project? How do those issues interact with software freedom? How can we protect user's rights in the current legal and technical landscape? Are there ways to mitigate the hold that click through terms of service have over the average person's use of software? Are privacy regulations like GDPR having any appreciable impact on software freedom? * Legal topics of all sorts and their interaction with software freedom culture and work remain welcome, and could include: How does your project make use of legal advice? What legal advice do you give projects and what topics do you put first on the list to worry about in projects? Discuss in detail a legal and/or policy issue your project faced and how your community dealt with it. What lessons did you learn? Are some of your developers afraid to discuss legal or quasi-legal issues without their lawyers, or their employers' lawyers, present? How has that impeded or helped your project? Are your lawyers really your lawyers (e.g., do corporate lawyers for companies in your community influence the direction of the project even though not all contributors work for that company)? * Contribution and engagement policies: how does your project engage new contributors and what policy decisions did your project make to welcome new contributors? What legal issues or policy concerns has your project faced historically in its community engagement efforts, and what did you learn from these experiences? * How does money affect your community? How is funding of developers handled in your project? What policies do you set to welcome volunteers to join a community where most developers are paid? Does your project have policies that forbid funding developers directly? Does reliance on volunteer labor lead to lack of diversity since only the affluent can participate? If you had unconstrained resources at your disposal, what would you change about the funding structure of your project? Given the resources you have, what have you tried to change? Have you succeeded or failed? Would more money in the ecosystem hurt or help your project? * How do projects handle conflicts of interest and make sure that relevant interests of contributors are disclosed in important decision making discussions? * Strategies and plans for addressing harassment, exclusionary and/or discriminatory behavior in FLOSS communities. Do you have a Code of Conduct? Have you needed to enforce it? Was it successful in improving behavior and diversity in your community? What strategies do you use to you handle toxic people in your community? * Talks on license compliance, licensing business models, and anything akin to, or building upon, what you've seen in our DevRoom before are of course welcome. (URLs to talks from previous years are below.) Regarding topic relevancy, here's the only "don't": please don't propose introductory talks; there are other venues appropriate for those. FOSDEM is the meeting place of experts in Free Software project governance, law, and policy. This DevRoom is for intermediate to advanced topics surrounding just about anything you might call a "legal" or "policy" issue for your project or software freedom! Should I Submit? ================ Do consider that what may seem elementary to you may in fact be an intermediate topic in this area. In particular, while we expect to receive submissions from lawyers, we've found in our careers that non-lawyers often know just as much (and often more) about these topics than lawyers. Developers and other Free Software project participants who regularly face complex policy and legal questions are strongly and particularly encouraged to submit proposals. Historically, some of the most lively and intriguing talks in this DevRoom's previous years have been from developers who have been thrust (often due to circumstances beyond their control) into dealing with legal and policy issues for Free Software. Look at past talks in our DevRoom for inspiration: https://archive.fosdem.org/2020/schedule/track/legal_and_policy_issues/ https://archive.fosdem.org/2019/schedule/track/legal_and_policy_issues/ https://archive.fosdem.org/2018/schedule/track/legal_and_policy_issues/ https://archive.fosdem.org/2017/schedule/track/legal_and_policy_issues/ https://archive.fosdem.org/2016/schedule/track/legal_and_policy_issues/ https://archive.fosdem.org/2015/schedule/track/legal_and_policy_issues/ https://archive.fosdem.org/2014/schedule/track/legal_and_policy_issues/ https://archive.fosdem.org/2013/schedule/track/legal_issues/ https://archive.fosdem.org/2012/schedule/track/legal_issues_devroom.html CFP Schedule And Submission Details =================================== Submit proposals NO LATER THAN 20 December 2020 at 23:59 AoE (Anywhere on Earth) Please use the following URL to submit your talk to FOSDEM 2021: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM21 and follow these steps: * Select as the Track "Legal and Policy Issues devroom". * Include a title. (Note that "Subtitle" entry doesn't appear on all conference documents, so make sure "Title" can stand on its own without "Subtitle" present.) Shorter and more concise is better! * Include an Abstract of about 500 characters and a full description of any length you wish, but in both fields, please be concise, but clear and descriptive. * Indicate a 30 or 50 minute time slot. If you select any other time amount, your submission is very likely to be rejected. * Use the "Links" sub-area to your past work in the field you'd like to share. Particularly helpful are recordings (audio/video) of your past talks on the subject or past papers/blog posts you've written on the subject. * You are encouraged to enter biographic information under the "Person" section (e.g. you may upload an image, enter your background in the "Description" tab, and sites of interest under the "Links" tab). * State that you agree to CC BY-SA-4.0 or CC BY-4.0 licensing of your talk in the "Submission Notes" field. Add a statement such as this: "Should my presentation be scheduled for FOSDEM 2021, I hereby agree to license all recordings, slides and any other materials presented under the Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 4.0 International license. * Also in the notes field, confirm your availability to speak on Saturday, 6 February 2021. (Please indicate any challenges you may have with respect to your availability to present during the European time zone.) Failure to follow these instructions above (and those on the FOSDEM 2021 site) may result in automatic rejection of your talk submission. However, if you have trouble with submission via the official system, please do contact <fosdem-legal-policy at faif.us> for assistance. Diversity Statement ------------------- The organizers of this DevRoom are committed to increasing the diversity of the free software movement. To that end, our CFP process takes demographic information into account in order to build a program that features as many different voices and perspectives as possible. If you are comfortable doing so, please share any demographic information about yourself in the "Submission Notes". Such disclosure is not mandatory by any means. No Assurance of Acceptance -------------------------- The organizers (listed below) realize many of our friends and colleagues will respond to this CFP. We welcome submissions from all, but an invitation from any of us to submit is *not* an assurance of acceptance. We typically must make hard decisions. We appreciate the effort you put into crafting your submission to give yourself the best chance of acceptance.
