Declarative and Minimalistic Computing devroom CfP
by Manolis Ragkousis 03 Dec '20

03 Dec '20

We are excited to announce a devroom on Declarative and Minimalistic Computing at FOSDEM on Sunday February 7th 2021, online! FOSDEM is one of the most important free software conferences and is hosted annually at Université libre de Bruxelles in Brussels, Belgium. Unfortunately this year FOSDEM will not run a physical conference but will be online only. Talks will be pre-recorded with some live content including Q&A sessions and discussion panels. We accept talks from languages that attempt to minimize use of hardware and software while try to make systems simpler, more robust and more secure. If you are working on improving today's systems taking declarative/minimalistic approaches feel free to submit a talk proposal. Examples are Scheme/Lisp family of programmings languages. Minimalism and declarative programming are two important topic for this devroom. Minimalism matters. Minimalism allows for smaller systems that take less resources and consume less energy. More importantly, free and open source minimalism allows for secure systems that are easy to understand. Declarative programming is a programming paradigm that expresses the logic of a computation without describing its control flow. Many languages that apply this style attempt to minimize or eliminate side effects by describing what the program must accomplish in terms of the problem domain, rather than describe how to accomplish it as a sequence of the programming language primitives. Finally, in this year's virtual conference we will honour the late Professor Edsger Dijkstra as a pioneer who laid foundations for many of these ideas. We have a room Sunday 6 February 2021. We want to invite you to submit a talk on declarative and minimalistic computing that fits that description. We are especially happy to receive talk submissions from members of groups underrepresented in free software. If you have something you’d like to share with your fellow developers, please E-mail us! Talks considered for the devroom will have to be entered in - https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM21 The deadline for submission is December 15th. If you have a FOSDEM pentabarf account from a previous year, please use that account. Otherwise add one on https://penta.fosdem.org/user/new_account. Reach out to pjotr.public456(a)thebird.nl or manolis837(a)gmail.com if you run into any trouble. When submitting your talk make doubly sure to select "Declarative and Minimalistic Computing devroom" as track (if you don't we won't find it), and include the following information: * The title and subtitle of your talk * A short abstract of one paragraph * A longer description if you wish to do so * Links to related websites/blogs etc * Presentations has to be pre-recorded and streamed before the event. * Start recording early! To see what a final talk looks like see https://archive.fosdem.org/2020/schedule/event/gnumes/ For accepted talks * Once your talk was accepted, we will assign you an organiser to help you to produce the pre-recorded content. * The organiser will review the content and ensure it has the required quality. Call for devrooms FOSDEM 2021 (online)
by Johan Van de Wauw 25 Oct '20

25 Oct '20

We now invite proposals for developer rooms. FOSDEM offers open source and free software developers a place to meet, share ideas and collaborate. Renowned for being highly developer-oriented, the event brings together some 8000+ geeks from all over the world. The tweny-first edition will take place Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th February 2021, online. Developer rooms are assigned to self-organising groups to work together on open source and free software projects, to discuss topics relevant to a broader subset of the community, etc. Most content should take the form of presentations. Proposals involving collaboration across project or domain boundaries are strongly encouraged. For obvious reasons we will unfortunately not be able to run a live conference this year, but we still want to give communities a place to meet online. We are working on a an online platform (streaming + chat) allowing devroom organizers to run the conference with prerecorded talks with live qa and live presentations with streaming and archiving. The recordings will be published under the same licence as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY) Developer room proposals should be submitted through the form at https://fosdem.org/devroom which contains further information. Questions or remarks? Contact us at devrooms(a)fosdem.org. Key dates: 31 October - deadline for developer room proposals 10 November - accepted developer rooms announced 15 November (or earlier) - developer rooms issue Calls for Participation 31 December (or earlier) - developer rooms publish complete schedules Note that the demand for devrooms may exceed the supply (even for an online event). By applying for a devroom you are making a commitment to fill the schedule. Devroom coordinators must enter a complete schedule into our conference system by 31st December. It is particularly important to be available and to respond promptly to emails about the schedule for about a week either side of this date. As we also run this event online for the first time, we would like to get your input on what duration would be good for a devroom: one whole day, or rather two afternoon sessions? Please indicate whether you would prefer Saturday, Sunday or both days. Please let us know what according to you would be an interesting timespan for your devroom: eg one long slot on Saturday or rather two shorter slots on Sunday.

OSS event: Intl. Conf on Open Source Systems
by Emanuil Tolev 13 May '20

13 May '20

Hey all, another event on open source is running virtually right now. It is supported with low cost tickets but if you can't afford it right now they still accept attendees. ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Tony Wasserman <tony.wasserman(a)west.cmu.edu> Date: Wed, 13 May 2020 at 05:05 Subject: Intl. Conf on Open Source Systems To: <info(a)fosdem.org> Good morning, I wanted to let the FOSDEM community know about the 16th International Conference on Open Source Systems, which will be held online on May 13-14 beginning at 0830 CET. It's possible to register and attend at no charge this year. The conference is sponsored by a working group managed by the International Federation for Information Processing, a long-established international organization. I'm sorry that we have waited until the last moment to let you know, but I recently discovered that the conference publicity committee didn't reach out specifically to FOSDEM. Better late than never.... I think that the Program Committee has created a very interesting and relevant conference that would be of interest to FOSDEM attendees. You can find more information and the program schedule at http://oss2020.org. We would be grateful if you could pass this information along to the FOSDEM community as soon as possible so that people can participate. Thanks for your help. Stay safe and healthy. FOSDEM to Go app for iOS
by Horst Gutmann 25 Feb '20

25 Feb '20

Hi :) Right before this year’s FOSDEM I started working on a new iOS app for keeping track of all the talks I wanted to attend. It was mainly done as an exercise for me to learn Swift and UIKit but perhaps it will also be useful to others. The code is available on https://github.com/zerok/fosdem-to-go and there is currently a TestFlight going on for version 0.1 with plans to move it into the AppStore in the next couple of weeks. The app uses a custom logo which is at least partially related to the official FOSDEM logo: https://github.com/zerok/fosdem-to-go/blob/master/FosdemToGo/Assets.xcasset… I have one question regarding the logo, though: Do I need to put credits for the official logo somewhere into the app? There *will* be a part in the credits informing the user that the schedule is fetched directly from fosdem.org. The application has far fewer features than https://github.com/johanhenselmans/fosdem but it works in a different way regarding how information is organized and presented. Kind regards, Horst

Coronavirus
by hostilius 21 Feb '20

21 Feb '20

Hello, Fosdem brings together people from many places all over the world, which is awesome. But the timing of this year's Fosdem is unfortunate. I suggest to discuss the potential effect of the Coronavirus (2019nCov) on Fosdem, and potential measures. The new virus appears to be transmittable from person to person, even by people not showing any symptoms yet (this is different from the SARS 2002 virus). Based on today's reports from Hong Kong university, the virus might have an incubation period around 10 days. Currently 44000 people are estimated to be infected (not yet sick), and that number might double every 6 days. The city of Wuhan (11 million inhabitants) was put under lockdown on Jan 23. However, it is estimated that 5 million people were able to leave the city prior to the lockdown. I think this means, it's currently unknown how successful the quarantine effort is. Another developer conference by a large Telco, that was originally planned to take place mid February in Shenzen (more than 1000 km away from Wuhan), was already canceled. How likely is it that the virus might already be spreading internationally, with the majority of cases still being unnoticed, because of the long incubation period? How likely is it that the virus reaches the Fosdem venue and that many attendees will catch it, thereby putting themselves at risk, and further contributing to a quick international distribution? Kind Regards, a regular Fosdem visitor. Sent with [ProtonMail](https://protonmail.com) Secure Email.
