by George Orwell 21 Jan '20

21 January is the 70th anniversary of the death of George Orwell. The copyright on all Mr Orwell's amazing works expires just in time for FOSDEM. Yay! Every free software organization can now have the best code of conduct ever. We can copy this line right out of Animal Farm: All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others Yippee! Don't you love it? Lets publish a Free Software re-write of Animal Farm. In the original story, Mollie is the horse and Napoleon is the pig Now we can re-write it. Let's call the horse Richard and we call the pig mOllie Let's celebrate the preachings from fosdem 2019 community devroom whispering networks. demotions. conflicts of interest. MOLLAMBY. looking for a gender-neutral term for a toxic woman? Mr Orwell gave it to us. Thanks to the Debian Developers who spoke up about the gulags and cyberbullying. OK to Do additional signage at FOSDEM?
by Leslie Hawthorn 21 Jan '20

21 Jan '20

Hello FOSDEM Team, The Community DevRoom will be located in Building U this year - and thank you very much for the larger room assignment! - and we found last year that it was a bit hard to find us. Would it be permissible for the Community DevRoom team to bring some sign stands to set out on the path to help visitors find us? We would, of course, clean up after ourselves and leave no additional trash for the staff and volunteers to deal with, because that's just rude. I was thinking we would buy some of these [0] and change them to say "caution, you're walking past the Community DevRoom" with an arrow towards the room. We would also list the DevRooms in Building U that are taking place on Sunday on the signage because we are loving, inclusive people who want to help everyone out. Please let me know if this would be all right. [0] - https://www.indiamart.com/proddetail/wet-floor-caution-stand-7535174133.html Cheers, LH -- Leslie Hawthorn http://twitter.com/lhawthorn

"Official" FOSDEM event/venue on Saturday
by Bernard Tyers - Mobile 21 Jan '20

21 Jan '20

Hi, I've been asked if there is an "official" (i.e. advertised as part of/connected to) FOSDEM event on the Saturday night of FOSDEM? I'm thinking similar to the Friday night Delerium meet-up (tho' not sure if it was ever/still is official!), however not necessarily located in a pub. Over the years I'm not aware of any, but I thought I should ask. Thanks in advance, Bernard Open Source Design devroom -- Sent from my Android device with K-9 Mail. Please excuse my brevity.

Maps of different floors for Building U?
by Leslie Hawthorn 17 Jan '20

17 Jan '20

Hello FOSDEM Folks, I am making a couple of updates to our speaker info letter and one speaker suggested it would be very nice to have a map of Building U since it is a bit hard to navigate. I have a map of Building U, floor 2, but not floor 5. Is such a map available? Thank you for your help. Cheers, LH -- Leslie Hawthorn http://twitter.com/lhawthorn

BOF question
by Raymond Paik 16 Jan '20

16 Jan '20

Hi, I noticed from the schedule page (https://fosdem.org/2020/schedule/tracks/) that two BOF tracks are full. I believe in the past you signed up on-site and the room was assigned to you on first-come first-served basis. Was there a different process this year (e.g. done via CFP)? Apologies if I missed an announcement. Thanks, Ray

Kitchen in Brussels I can use?
by Leslie Hawthorn 13 Jan '20

13 Jan '20

Hello FOSDEM Folks, Well, this question is quite the long shot but I will ask anyway. I thought it would be nice to have some vegan apple cake instead of just salty snacks and chocolate for the DevRoom attendees. Any chance someone in Brussels has a kitchen I can use to make cake for the Community DevRoom? DevRoom takes place on Sunday. I would want to make the cake on Friday or Saturday. I would bring all my own ingredients and clean up well. Perhaps there is one of those rent a space kitchens that I could use? All help appreciated. Cheers, LH -- Leslie Hawthorn http://twitter.com/lhawthorn

Free, hands-on usability testing workshop for FOSS projects on Jan 31st
by belen barros pena 10 Jan '20

10 Jan '20

Hi all, As part of the FOSDEM Fringe, Open Source Design is giving a free, hands-on workshop on how to plan, run and analyse usability studies the Friday before FOSDEM. The workshop will take place at Hackerspace Brussels on Friday 31st January from 12:00 to 17:00. You can register for the workshop at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfCMcgZq9cG-scnVvkb7_6Z1eL1SszkPIr… A huge thank you is due to Hackerspace Brussels for providing the space for the workshop: we could not do this without them :) The workshop will demonstrate how easy and how useful the usability testing technique can be. It will also teach attendees what they need to know in order to run usability studies themselves. The content has been designed for FOSS projects and for complete newbies: no experience doing design research necessary. The workshop can accommodate 20 people. Spaces are assigned on a first come, first served basis. If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch off list. Cheers, Belén (on behalf of Open Source Design)
