The lounge will be present for both days. To discuss the devroom and lounge, please join the [Free-RTC mailing list](http://lists.freertc.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss). ### Speaking opportunities Note: if you used FOSDEM Pentabarf before, please use the same account/username Real-Time Communications devroom: deadline 23:59 UTC on 15th of December. Please use the [Pentabarf](https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM20/) system to submit a talk proposal for the devroom. On the "General" tab, please look for the "Track" option and choose "Real Time Communications devroom". Other devrooms and lightning talks: some speakers may find their topic is in the scope of more than one devroom. It is encouraged to apply to more than one devroom and also consider proposing a lightning talk, but please be kind enough to tell us if you do this by filling out the notes in the form. Here you can find the [full list of devrooms](https://www.fosdem.org/2020/schedule/tracks/) and here you can apply for a [lightning talk](https://fosdem.org/submit). ### First-time speaking? FOSDEM devrooms are a welcoming environment for people who have never given a talk before. Please feel free to contact the devroom administrators personally if you would like to ask any questions about it. ### Submission guidelines The Pentabarf system will ask for many of the essential details. Please remember to re-use your account from previous years if you have one. In the "Submission notes", please tell us about: - The purpose of your talk - Any other talk applications (devrooms, lightning talks, main track) - Availability constraints and special needs You can use HTML and links in your bio, abstract and description. If you maintain a blog, please consider providing us with the URL of a feed with posts tagged for your RTC-related work. We will be looking for relevance to the conference and devroom themes, presentations aimed at developers of free and open source software about RTC-related topics. Please feel free to suggest a duration between 20 minutes and 55 minutes but note that the final decision on talk durations will be made by the devroom administrators based on the number of received proposals. As the two previous devrooms have been combined into one, we may decide to give shorter slots than in previous years so that more speakers can participate. Please note FOSDEM aims to record and live-stream all talks. The CC-BY license is used. Volunteers needed ----------------- To make the devroom and lounge run successfully, we are looking for volunteers: - FOSDEM provides video recording equipment and live streaming, volunteers are needed to assist in this - Organizing one or more restaurant bookings (dependending upon number of participants) for the evening of Saturday, 1 February - Participation in the Real-Time lounge - Circulating this Call for Participation to other mailing lists Social events and dinners ------------------------- The traditional FOSDEM beer night occurs on Friday, 31st of January. On Saturday night, there are usually dinners associated with each of the devrooms. Most restaurants in Brussels are not so large so these dinners have space constraints and reservations are essential. Please subscribe to the [Free-RTC mailing list](http://lists.freertc.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss) for further details about the Saturday night dinner options and how you can register for a seat. Related events around FOSDEM ---------------------------- As per usual, the [XMPP Summit](https://wiki.xmpp.org/web/Conferences/Summit_24) is happening ahead of FOSDEM. This time it will take place on the 30th and 31st of January also in Brussels. All details are available on the [summit website](https://wiki.xmpp.org/web/Conferences/Summit_24). Spread the word and discuss --------------------------- If you know of any mailing lists where this CfP would be relevant, please forward this document. Distributions Devroom Call for Participation
by Brian Exelbierd 27 Oct '19

# FOSDEM 2020 - Distribution Devroom Call for Participation The Distributions devroom will take place Sunday 2 February 2020 at FOSDEM, in Brussels, Belgium at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. As more and more workloads are being considered for containerization in the future and are finally landing in virtualized environments today, distributions remain a critical success factor and are more important than ever. Containers, like virtual machines, are not magical and rely on piles of software being assembled in a way that is repeatable, reliable, and functional. This is at the very heart of the problem that distributions have always solved. Each distribution is responsible for building, testing, and releasing software as well as managing the lifecycle of each application in the collection. Additionally, distributions do very important work in ensuring that various versions of upstream software work well together and can co-exist. Distributions are also, often responsible, for "de-vendoring" upstream software so that security fixes can be applied more quickly. We welcome submissions targeted at contributors interested in issues unique to distributions, especially in the following topics: # Topics and Areas of Focus ## Focus Areas - The ways that distribution technologies can be leveraged to allow for easier creation of a multi-verse of artifacts from single source trees. This includes the increasing move toward self-contained applications and providing multiple non-parallel installed versions of software. - Efforts being made in shared environments around Build/Test/Release cycles. - Topics related to the delivery problem as it impacts updates in terms of both size and rollback/reliability are expected to be featured. ## Additional Topic Ideas - Distribution and Community collaborations, eg: how does code flow from developers to end users across communities, ensuring trust and code audibility - Automating building software for redistribution to minimize human involvement, eg: bots that branch and build software, bots that participate as team members extending human involvement - Cross-distribution collaboration on common issues, eg: content distribution, infrastructure, and documentation - Growing distribution communities, eg: onboarding new users, helping new contributors learn community values and technology, increasing contributor technical skills, recognizing and rewarding contribution - Principals of Rolling Releases, Long Term Supported Releases (LTS), Feature gated releases, and calendar releases - Distribution construction, installation, deployment, packaging and content management - Balancing new code and active upstreams verus security updates, back porting and minimization of user breaking changes - Delivering architecture independent software universally across architectures within the confines of distribution systems - Effectively communicating the difference in experience across architectures for developers, packagers, and users - Working with vendors and including them in the community - The future of distributions, emerging trends and evolving user demands from the idea of a platform Ideal submissions are actionable and opinionated. Submissions may be in the form of 25 or 50 minute talks, panel sessions, round-table discussions, or Birds of a Feather (BoF) sessions. Dates ------ Submission Deadline: 01-Dec-2019 @ 2359 GMT Acceptance Notification: 6-Dec-2019 Final Schedule Posted: 14-Dec-2019 How to submit -------------- Visit https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM20 1.) If you do not have an account, create one here 2.) Click 'Create Event' 3.) Enter your presentation details 4.) Be sure to select the Distributions Devroom track! 5.) Submit What to include --------------- - The title of your submission - A 1-paragraph Abstract - A longer description including the benefit of your talk to your target audience, including a definition of your target audience. - Approximate length / type of submission (talk, BoF, ...) - Links to related websites/blogs/talk material (if any) Administrative Notes ---------------- We will be live-streaming and recording the Distributions Devroom. CfP - Ada Developer Room at FOSDEM 2020, Brussels, Belgium
by Dirk.Craeynest＠cs.kuleuven.be 26 Oct '19

26 Oct '19

----------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Presentations 10th Ada Developer Room at FOSDEM 2020 Saturday 1 February 2020, Brussels, Belgium http://www.cs.kuleuven.be/~dirk/ada-belgium/events/20/200201-fosdem.html Organized in cooperation with Ada-Europe ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Ada-Belgium [1] is pleased to announce there will be a one-day Ada Developer Room on Saturday 1 February 2020 at FOSDEM 2020 in Brussels, Belgium. Our 10th Ada DevRoom is once more organized in cooperation with Ada-Europe [2]. General Information ------------------- FOSDEM [3], the Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting, is a free and non-commercial two-day weekend event organized early each year in Brussels, Belgium. It is highly developer-oriented and brings together 8000+ participants from all over the world. No registration is necessary. The goal is to provide open source developers and communities a place to meet with other developers and projects, to be informed about the latest developments in the open source world, to attend interesting talks and presentations on various topics by open source project leaders and committers, and to promote the development and the benefits of open source solutions. Ada Programming Language and Technology --------------------------------------- Awareness of safety and security issues in software systems is ever increasing. Multi-core platforms are now abundant. These are some of the reasons that the Ada programming language and technology attracts more and more attention, among others due to Ada's support for programming by contract and for multi-core targets. The latest Ada language definition was updated early 2016. Work on new features is ongoing, such as improved support for fine-grained parallelism, and will result in a new Ada standard scheduled for 2021. Ada-related technology such as SPARK provides a solution for the safety and security aspects stated above. More and more tools are available, many are open source, including for small and recent platforms. Interest in Ada keeps further increasing, also in the open source community, and many exciting projects have been started. Ada Developer Room ------------------ FOSDEM is an ideal fit for an Ada Developer Room. On the one hand, it gives the general open source community an opportunity to see what is happening in the Ada community and how Ada technology can help to produce reliable and efficient open source software. On the other hand, it gives open source Ada projects an opportunity to present themselves, get feedback and ideas, and attract participants to their project and collaboration between projects. At previous FOSDEM events, the Ada-Belgium non-profit organization organized successful Ada Developer Rooms, offering a full day program in 2006 [4], a two-day program in 2009 [5], and full day programs in 2012-2016 [6-10], and in 2018-2019 [12]. An important goal is to present exciting Ada technology and projects also to people outside the traditional Ada community. Our proposal for another dedicated Ada DevRoom was accepted, and now work continues to prepare the detailed program. We most probably will have a total of 8.5 schedulable hours between 10:30 and 19:00 in one of the rooms which accommodate from 59 to 85 participants. More information will be posted on the dedicated web-page on the Ada-Belgium site [13], and final announcements will of course also be sent to various forums, lists and newsgroups. Call for Presentations ---------------------- We would like to schedule technical presentations, tutorials, demos, live performances, project status reports, discussions, etc, in the Ada Developer Room. Ada-Belgium calls on you to: - inform us at ada-belgium-board(a)cs.kuleuven.be about specific presentations you would like to hear in this Ada DevRoom; - for bonus points, subscribe to the Ada-FOSDEM mailing list [14] to discuss and help organize the details; - for more bonus points, be a speaker: the Ada-FOSDEM mailing list is the place to be! Do you have a talk you want to give? Do you have a project you would like to present? Would you like to get more people involved with your project? We're inviting proposals that are related to Ada software development, and include a technical oriented discussion. You're not limited to slide presentations, of course. Be creative. Propose something fun to share with people so they might feel some of your enthusiasm for Ada! Speaking slots are 15 or 45 minutes, plus 5 minutes for Q&A. Depending on interest, we might also have a session with lightning presentations (e.g. 5 minutes each), and/or an informal discussion session. Note that all talks will be streamed live (audio+video) and recorded, for remote as well as later viewing of talks, and so that people can watch streams in the hallways when rooms are full. By submitting a proposal, you agree to being recorded and streamed, and agree the content of your talk will be published under the same license as all FOSDEM content, a Creative Commons (CC-BY) license. Submission Guidelines --------------------- Subscribe to the Ada-FOSDEM mailing list [14], and submit your proposal there. If needed, feel free to contact us at ada-belgium-board(a)cs.kuleuven.be. Please include: - your name, affiliation, contact info; - the title of your talk (be descriptive and creative); - a short descriptive and attractive abstract; - potentially pointers to more information; - a short bio and photo. See programs of previous Ada DevRooms (URLs below) for presentation examples, as well as for the kind of info we need. We'd like to put together a draft schedule by end of November. So, please act ASAP, the sooner the better, but definitely by November 25, 2019 at the latest. We look forward to lots of feedback and proposals!
