FOSDEM 2020: Free Software Radio Devroom CfP
by Nicolas Cuervo Benavides 16 Oct '19

16 Oct '19

Dear friends and fans of software-defined radio and free/open-source radio topics in general, FOSDEM 2020 (the free and open-source developer's meeting in Brussels, Europe) will, once again, feature a track on Software Defined Radio, and any other radio-related topics in the (now known as) *Free Software Radio* devroom. Therefore, we invite developers and users from the free software radio community to join us for this track and present your talks or demos. Software Radio has become an important tool to allow anyone to access the EM spectrum. Using free software radio libraries and applications and cheap hardware, anyone can now start hacking on wireless communications, remote sensing, radar, fun hacks of all sorts, or other applications. At FOSDEM, we hope to network all these projects and improve collaboration, bring new ideas forward and get more people involved. The track's web site resides at the link below. The final schedule will be available through Pentabarf and the official FOSDEM website. https://fosdem.org/2020/schedule/track/free_software_radio/ Additional Information will be also available at: https://wiki.gnuradio.org/index.php/FOSDEM_2020 ** Submit your presentations To suggest a talk, go to https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM20 and follow the instructions (you need an account, but can use your account from last year if you have one). You need to create an 'Event'; make sure it's in the Free Software Radio track! Lengths aren't fixed, but give a realistic estimate and please don't exceed 30 minutes unless you have something special planned (in that case, contact one of us). Also, don't forget to include time for Q&A. We will typically go for 30-minute slots -- shorter talks, unless they're really short, usually tend to screw up the schedule too much. You aren't limited to slide presentations, of course. Be creative. However, FOSDEM is an open-source conference, therefore we ask you to stay clear of marketing presentations and present something relevant to free/open software. We like nitty-gritty technical stuff. Topics discussed in this devroom include: * SDR Frameworks + Tools * Cellular/telecoms software * Free/Open SDR hardware * Wireless security * Random fun wireless hacks * SDR in education * Satellite/spacecraft communication * Ham radio related topics ** Important Dates FOSDEM is February 1st and 2nd, 2020. The Free Software Radio devroom is happening on Sunday, the 2nd of February. The submission deadline is Friday, December 6th. A complete schedule for the presentations in the devroom will be available on the 15th of December. In the last years we were always full to the brim with presentations, so if you want to present, please make sure to submit your abstracts soon! ** Steering Committee The track committee consists of: * Phil Balister - "Crofton" * Sylvain Munaut -"tnt" * Derek Kozel - "dkozel" * Nicolas Cuervo - "primercuervo" * Martin Braun - "mbr0wn" (Emeritus) Hope to hear from you soon! And please forward this announcement. - Nicolas

DNS Developer Room Call for Participation
by Pieter Lexis 16 Oct '19

16 Oct '19

Hello FOSDEM devs and visitors! After a successful and packed DNS devroom at FOSDEM 2018 and 2019, we are happy to announce a half-day DNS devroom at FOSDEM 2020. As with the last years, we hope to host talks anywhere from hardcore protocol stuff, to practical sessions for programmers that are not directly involved with DNS but may have to deal with DNS in their day to day coding or system administrators responsible for DNS infrastructure. We have been allotted a room on Saturday 1 February 2020. We expect to schedule 30 minutes per talk, including questions, but if you need more or less time, we can discuss this. If you have something you’d like to share with your fellow developers, please head to pentabarf at https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM20. Examples of topics are measuring, monitoring, DNS libraries, anecdotes on how you’ve (ab)used the DNS, and group discussions of upcoming technologies. Here’s the 2019 schedule, for your inspiration: https://archive.fosdem.org/2019/schedule/track/dns/ . The deadline for submission is December 1st 2019. If you have a FOSDEM pentabarf account from a previous year, please use that account. Reach out to dns-devroom-manager(a)fosdem.org if you run into any trouble. See you there! [CFP] Decentralized Internet & Privacy devroom @ FOSDEM 2020
by brabo 15 Oct '19

15 Oct '19

Welcome to the Decentralized Internet & Privacy devroom at FOSDEM 2020 (Brussels, Belgium, February 2nd). Open Source and Free Software initial promises were to empower individuals when it came to computing. Three decades later, computing practices are tightly coupled to the Internet ecosystem. PCs are less and less used while smartphones are soaring and data is collected and stored on servers on which we have very limited control as users. What happened to user's freedom and privacy in the meantime? The outlook is not so great: we have less and less control over our digital environment. Network neutrality is heavily attacked and mainstream software products are usually proprietary or run on servers we don't have control over. Modern technology has given the powerful new abilities to eavesdrop and collect data on people - with critical social and political consequences. FOSDEM is a free software event that offers free software communities a place to meet, share ideas and collaborate. It is renowned for being highly developer-oriented and brings together 8000+ participants from all over the world. It is held in the city of Brussels (Belgium). In 2020, FOSDEM will take place during the weekend of February 1st-2nd 2018. More details about the event can be found at https://fosdem.org/. On Sunday, February 2nd, the Decentralized Internet & Privacy devroom will be a place for development teams to present the state of their project and future directions, answer questions from the audience and followup in the hacking rooms nearby afterwards. Call For Participation ====================== There is a bright future ahead of us if we unite our efforts toward decentralized services and Surveillance Self-Defense (SSD as defined by EFF). This devroom welcomes all technical projects and initiatives, to share their progress and inspire others. Presentation topics could include: Technologies and initiatives focused on decentralization: - Community-driven networks - Community based around self-hosting or local hosting - Self-hosting solutions - Ethical hosting providers / alternatives to GAFAM (Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft) - Decentralized / federated network protocols and platforms - Decentralized / distributed instant messaging, file sharing and content storage Technologies and initiatives focused on privacy: - Anonymous overlay networks - Whistleblower platforms - Privacy oriented Operating Systems - Infrastructure supporting anonymous browsing - Operational security: how to minimize the amount of information someone can collect about you online and on the streets - Basic threat modeling: what sort of paranoia do you realistically need to have? - Steps to minimize damage in the event of a breach Talks are expected to be technical as it is FOSDEM. ** Important dates - 1 Dec 2019: submission deadline for talk proposals - 15 Dec 2019: announcement of the final schedule - 2 Feb 2020: Decentralized Internet & Privacy (Sunday) Steering committee: - decentral1se (Yunohost) - Christian Pfaab (Uni Bremen) - Pili Guerra (Tor Project) - Brabo Silvius (Torservers) - realitygaps (Librehosters) Use the FOSDEM 'pentabarf' tool to submit your proposal: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM20 If necessary, create a Pentabarf account and activate it. Please reuse your account from previous years if you have already created it. Important! Select the "Decentralized Internet & Privacy" track (on the "General" tab). Suggested talk length is 20 minutes and 10 minutes for questions. Date and location ================= Decentralized Internet & Privacy will take place all day long on 2 Feb 2020 (Sunday). The room is to be confirmed (Solbosch campus - Université Libre Brussels, Brussels, Belgium) Recording of talks ================== The FOSDEM organizers plan to have live streaming and recording fully working, both for remote/later viewing of talks, and so that people can watch streams in the hallways when rooms are full. This requires speakers to consent to being recorded and streamed. If you plan to be a speaker, please understand that by doing so you implicitly give consent for your talk to be recorded and streamed. The recordings will be published under the same license as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY).
