----------------------------------------------------------------------- 2nd Call for Presentations 10th Ada Developer Room at FOSDEM 2020 Saturday 1 February 2020, Brussels, Belgium www.cs.kuleuven.be/~dirk/ada-belgium/events/20/200201-fosdem.html Organized in cooperation with Ada-Europe Deadline Monday 25 November 2019 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The 10th Ada Developer Room will take place on Saturday 1 February 2020 in Brussels, Belgium. The Call for Presentations is still open: the deadline is Monday 25 November 2019. Do you have a talk you want to give? Do you have a project you would like to present? Would you like to get more people involved with your project? We're inviting proposals that are related to Ada software development, and include a technical oriented discussion. You're not limited to slide presentations, of course. Be creative. Propose something fun to share with people so they might feel some of your enthusiasm for Ada! An important goal is to present exciting Ada technology and projects also to people outside the traditional Ada community. Speaking slots are 15 or 45 minutes, plus 5 minutes for Q&A. Depending on interest, we might also have a session with lightning presentations (e.g. 5 minutes each), and/or an informal discussion session. Please provide a proposed title, the preferred length, plus an abstract and a short bio similar in style as on the program for previous Ada DevRooms, see for example [1]. We need that to put the draft program together by the end of November. Please react ASAP, and submit proposals by November 25, 2019, or contact us if you need more time. We're looking forward to your proposals! Dirk Craeynest Dirk.Craeynest(a)cs.kuleuven.be (for Ada-Belgium/Ada-Europe/SIGAda/WG9) PS: The full Call for Presentations is posted on the dedicated web-page on the Ada-Belgium site (see URL above). Copyleft Conf CFP open through November 17th
by Deb Nicholson 12 Nov '19

12 Nov '19

fosdem(a)lists.fosdem.org Hi all, The Software Freedom Conservancy is hosting the Second Annual Copyleft Conf the day after FOSDEM in another part of Brussels. The call for proposals is open through November 17th, AOE. https://2020.copyleftconf.org/program/call-for-proposals Thanks for considering submitting a talk! Who: Participants who care about copyleft — from developers, strategists, enforcement organizations, lawyers, scholars and critics — will gather for an in-depth, high bandwidth, and expert-level discussion about the day-to-day details of using copyleft licensing, obstacles facing copyleft (and all FOSS licensing) and the future of copyleft as a strategy to advance and defend software freedom for users and developers around the world. The event will provide a friendly and safe place for discussion of copyleft as a key strategy for defending software freedom. All are welcomed and no invitation or membership to any group is required to attend! People of all genders, people of color, and those from groups that are under-indexed in free software are heartily encouraged to submit a proposal. *We are looking for 25 minute talks.* The time is short to maximize communication from many parties and inspire later discussion. You can either choose to speak for 20 minutes and allow 5 minutes of Q&A or speak for 25 minutes with no Q&A. *We are also looking for discussion leaders to introduce a topic and facilitate a 60 minute discussion.* We want people to submit discussions in groups or pairs. We are especailly intersted in topics lead by people from different organizations who can bring different perspectives. Discussions will hopefully result in actionable ideas or practical solutions around better use and increased adoption of copylefted software. Discussion leaders will spend 5-10 minutes introducing their topics, either suggest or encourage participants to suggest a format for discussion and then spend 5-10 minutes recapping the conversation and recording actionable advice to share after the conversation is over. We anticipate that this event will focus on software, but we may consider proposals related to other fields using copyleft. Here are some example topics, but any topic that relates to copyleft is welcome: - Governance concerns for large copyleft projects - Social and/or technical compliance strategies - How copyleft fits in with other efforts to build ethical technology - Is it possible or desirable to include ethical considerations beyond software freedom into FOSS licenses? - Copyleft and enforcement in different jurisdictions - Affero GPL and other copyleft considerations in the era of network-based service software - Publicly funded copyleft; i.e. municipal, library, public school or government - License compatibility, what's new, what's old, and what challenges remain? - Copyleft abuse, how should the community respond? - The (general) future of copyleft Follow this link to submit a talk, https://2020.copyleftconf.org/account/login/ Feel free to share our CFP link with friends and colleagues, https://2020.copyleftconf.org/program/call-for-proposals Best, Deb Nicholson

FOSDEM Graphics Devroom: call for speakers.
by Luc Verhaegen 04 Nov '19

04 Nov '19

Hi, At FOSDEM on saturday the 1st of february 2020, there will be another graphics DevRoom. URL: https://fosdem.org/2020/ The focus of this DevRoom is: * Graphics drivers: from display to media to 3d drivers, both in bootloaders, kernel or userspace. Be it part of DRM, KMS, V4L, (direct)FB, Xorg, Mesa... * Input drivers: kernel and userspace. * Windowing systems: X, Wayland, Mir, directFB, ... * Even colour management, low level toolkit stuff, and other areas which i might have overlooked above are accepted. Slots will be handed out on a first come, first serve basis. The best slots will go to those who apply the earliest. We have the devroom from 10:30 til 19:00, giving us 8h30, so eight 50 minute talks and one 20 minute talk are available. Talk Submission: ---------------- The venerable pentabarf system will once again be used for talk submission. https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM20 Remember that FOSDEM is a huge, and tightly organized event with 10+k visitors, full livestreaming, and a booklet which holds the schedule. So put some effort in your talk submission and details, especially since the schedule gets locked down well before the event starts. Since this an open source community event, please refrain from turning in a talk that is purely corporate or a product commercial. Also, this is a highly technical devroom on a conference aimed at developers and advanced users, so only submit a talk on a subject you actually are involved with. Finally, if you are unsure whether you can come or not (this is FOSDEM, why are you not there anyway?), wait with submitting your talk until you know for sure. When in pentabarf, spend some time on the abstract and description, for both the event and the speaker. The abstract should be a shortened description, and the event abstract will sometimes even be printed directly in the booklet. BUT, on the website the abstract is immediately followed by the full description. If your abstract is fully descriptive, while terse, you might get away with just the abstract. Talks are either 50 minutes or 20 minutes long, plus 5 minutes for questions. All talks will be recorded, and will be streamed out live, and will later be made available as CC-BY, sometimes minutes after your talk has finished. As for deadlines, the fosdem organizers want to have a finished schedule by the 15th of december. Don't count on this deadline: first come first serve! The worst slots will be assigned to those who come last, which could be pretty dire given that there is the traditional FOSDEM beer event the night before ;) Please try to re-use your accounts from the previous years. If you have forgotten your password, then you can reset it here: https://penta.fosdem.org/user/forgot_password If there are any questions or issues, just poke me by email or on IRC. Necessary information: ---------------------- Below is a list of what i need to see filled in in pentabarf when you apply for a devroom before i consider it a valid submission. Remember: first come, first serve. The best slots (which are on saturday afternoon) are for the earliest submissions. On your personal page: * General: * First and last name * Nickname * Image * Contact: * email address * mobile number (this is a very hard requirement as there will be no other reliable form of emergency communication on the day) * Description: * Abstract * Description Create an event: * On the General page: * Event title * Event subtitle. * Track: Graphics Devroom * Event type: Lecture (talk) or Meeting (BoF) * Persons: * Add yourself as speaker. * Description: * Abstract: * Full Description * Schedule: * select your preferred talk length, either 55 or 25 minutes. * Links: * Add relevant links. The mobile phone number is the hardest requirement, so you can be contacted on-the-day when something comes up. Speakers will all receive my mobile number in return. Everything else can be ignored or will be filled in by me or the FOSDEM organizers. Remember, i will only schedule your talk after the basics are somewhat filled in (you still can change them until december 14th). I will be keeping a keen eye on your submissions and will come back with further questions or make small fixes as needed. Feel free to poke me with any questions or anything, both on irc (libv@freenode) and on email. That's about it. Hope to see you all at FOSDEM :) Luc Verhaegen.

FOSDEM 2020 - Quantum computing devroom CfP
by Tomas Babej 29 Oct '19

29 Oct '19

After very successful inaugural devroom last year, we are happy to announce a call for participation in a developer room dedicated to Quantum Computing for FOSDEM 2020! The developer room will take place at the FOSDEM conferrence in Brussels on Saturday, February 1st 2020. Organization of the room is stewarded by Quantum Open Source Foundation (https://qosf.org) whose mission is to ensure this new emerging computing paradigm is accessible using free and open source technology stack. Submit proposals either using the FOSDEM submission system: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM20 or using email address: fosdem20(a)qosf.org Submission deadline is Dec 1st, 23.59 UTC. To see schedule of our last FOSDEM devroom event, please see: https://qosf.org/fosdem === Why to participate === Quantum computing is a new emerging field that coming out of the lab and finding its applications in the real world. The space of the open source software for quantum computing is blooming with this trend, with researchers and hardware providers alike investing in creating software infrastructure for this new computing paradigm. With that in mind, the purpose of this devroom is twofold: - to flatten down the learning curve and break perceived barriers that prevent developers from entering the field of quantum software development - to ensure that the field is dominated by high-quality, community driven FOSS open source software, standards and protocols Many of the players have open sourced libraries to build quantum computing circuits and interact with their platforms, both actual hardware and simulators. However, not enough attention is given to building a wider quantum computing community and current trajectory leads to multiple silos, projects that are driven by commercial interest without liberal community driven governance structure. FOSDEM is one of the largest gatherings of open source community in the world, which happens yearly at the ULB Capus Solbosch, Brussels, Belgium. As such, it is an ideal place not only to showcase and discuss new ideas and developments in the space of quantum computing, but also help break down the barriers in adopting quantum computing by software developers. === Submission topics === We welcome submissions that are devoted to the following topics: * Introduction of open source projects in quantum computing * Future directions and roadmaps of existing projects * Use-cases and experiences of using existing open source software projects for quantum computing research and quantum software development * Identification of possible gaps in the space of open source for quantum computing * Discussions about the state of the open source community and possible ways of improving it and other topics that relate to quantum computing software. === Talk formats and instructions === We encourage both talks and workshop formats. We suggest following durations, including questions: * 20 min - lighting talks * 45-60 min - talks * 90-120 min - workshops Note that the talks at FOSDEM are captured (and streamed) under the CC-BY licence. Speakers are hence required to give permission to being recorded. Submit proposals either using the FOSDEM submission system: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM20 or using email address: fosdem20(a)qosf.org Submission deadline is Dec 1st, 23.59 UTC. Pentabarf instructions: To submit your talk, click on "Create Event" and then select the "Quantum computing" as the "Track". If you have already spoken at FOSDEM previously, please re-use your account. On behalf of the organizational team, Tomas Babej QOSF | qosf.org | qosf.org/fosdem

A question on CFP
by Raymond Paik 29 Oct '19

29 Oct '19

Hi, This is a "newbie" question (last year was the first time I submitted CFPs for FOSDEM)... On penta.fosdem.org, what are the purposes of "Submission notes", "Abstract", and "Full description" fields in the Description tab? I'm trying not to repeat the same information and wasn't sure if all three fields were required. Thanks, Ray
