CfP for SBOMs and Supply Chains devroom in FOSDEM 2026
by Alexios Zavras 11 Nov '25

11 Nov '25

[An online copy of this text is at https://hackmd.io/@spdx/FOSDEM-2026-CfP] # FOSDEM 2026 - SBOM and Supply Chain devroom info and CfP FOSDEM is one of the world's premier meetings of free software developers, with thousands of people attending each year. FOSDEM 2026 will take place on the weekend of 31 January and 1 February 2026 in Brussels. This is the Call for Participation (CfP) in the Software/System Bill of Materials (SBOM) and Supply Chain Devroom at FOSDEM 2026. ## Overview The SBOM and Supply Chain Devroom will be an in-person event in a room and time slot to be announced later. The SBOM and Supply Chain Devroom at FOSDEM is an informal, technical event oriented to authors, users, and enthusiasts of FOSS programs that produce, consume, or transform SBOM, and help the supply chain. The goal of the devroom is for interested people to get in touch with each other, exchange ideas and opinions, have interesting and hopefully productive discussions, and finally what is most important: have fun. **We are looking for presenters!** ## Devroom info The FOSS community has always been about collaboration and sharing, but we're facing serious challenges with software supply chain security. Recent attacks like the XZ Utils backdoor and the chalk npm package hack show that nobody's safe. The technical landscape is getting more complex too. AI and ML components are everywhere now, and they bring entirely new headaches, including training data provenance, model versioning, and AI-specific vulnerabilities. Additionaly, regulations like the EU Cyber Resilience Act are turning what used to be "nice to have" into actual legal requirements with real deadlines and penalties. SBOM are now absolutely critical. They're at the center of meeting compliance requirements, tracking vulnerabilities, and understanding what's actually in any packaged software. But creating and maintaining SBOM shouldn't be another burden on already-stretched maintainers, especially those running small projects solo or with tiny teams. These projects are often the building blocks that everything else depends on, but they simply don't have resources for comprehensive security audits or complex SBOM tooling. We can't just leave them to figure this out alone. Let's help every project together. This devroom is about tackling these shared problems together, as a community. We're not just talking about SBOM as compliance checkboxes. We're focused on defining SBOM, building FOSS tools, sharing data, and figuring out practical approaches that actually work. By collaborating, we can: - stop reinventing the wheel across different projects - build better, more interoperable solutions - make it easier for smaller projects to participate - keep compliance tools free and accessible - actually strengthen the security of the software we all depend on We're bringing together maintainers, developers, contributors, policy makers, and enterprise folks — basically everyone dealing with these challenges. FOSDEM is the perfect place to have these conversations because we're all in the same room, sharing ideas, and working on real solutions. Let's work together to meet regulatory requirements, improve security, and keep open source thriving throughout the entire software supply chain. ## Call for participation We are interested in presentations on any novel topic related to SBOM and the Supply Chain: usage, content, definitions, standardization efforts, etc. An indicative, non-exclusive, list of topics is: - Use of different types of SBOM in Supply Chain - Evolving areas of SBOM content: AI, Functional Safety, etc. - Supply Chain topics like verification, trust, and linking of various relevant artifacts - Case studies and lessons learned from real-life use - Special areas of interest not covered by current efforts ### First-time speakers FOSDEM devrooms are a welcoming environment for people who have never given a talk before. Please feel free to contact the devroom administrators personally if you would like to ask any questions about it. ### Submission guidelines Please submit your proposals via [FOSDEM Pretalx], FOSDEM's submissions tool, selecting the **"SBOMs and Supply Chains"** as the track. The deadline for submissions is **30 November 2025** in Brussels timezone (`2025-11-30T2300Z`). We will be looking for relevance to the conference and devroom themes, but essentially any novel on-topic presentation would qualify. Please note the emphasis on _novel_ and do not submit work that is already known to a large number of people. Also note that the audience is expected to be _developers_ of Free and Open Source Software and will most probably be knowledgeable in at least some aspects of SBOM and Supply Chain. Therefore aim your presentation accordingly; no need to introduce what SBOMs are, for example. Feel free to indicate in the "Submission Notes" area your preferred duration for your presentation between 5 and 30 minutes, but please note that the final decision on duration will be made by the devroom organizers based on the number of accepted proposals. As the overall duration of the devroom is fixed, the only way to accommodate more speakers is by limiting the length of each talk. Keep in mind that, as the event will be in-person, we also need to account for switching between speakers. Shorter presentations are **strongly** encouraged! Please note that FOSDEM aims to live-stream and record all presentations. The CC-BY license is used for the recordings. ## Volunteers needed To make the devroom run successfully, we are always looking for volunteers. If you will be attending the devroom and would like to help run it better, please reach out to the organizers! ## Spread the word and discuss If you know of any mailing lists or other online venues where this info and CfP would be relevant, please feel free to forward this document. ## Contact The organizers of the devroom can be reached by sending email to <sboms-and-supply-chains-devroom-manager(a)fosdem.org>. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any inquiry or suggestion for the devroom. For any private queries, you may also contact the organizers directly: - Alexios Zavras <fosdem(a)zvr.gr> - Kate Stewart <stewart(a)linux.com> - Adolfo García Veytia <adolfo.garcia(a)uservers.net> - Thomas Steenbergen <thomas(a)aboutcode.org> [FOSDEM]: https://fosdem.org [FOSDEM Pretalx]: https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2026/cfp -- zvr -

About the Open Research devroom The Open Research devroom addresses FLOSS <https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/floss-and-foss.en.html> developers in a broad community concerned with research production and curation: scientists, engineers, journalists, archivists, curators, activists. The tools and technologies targeted are typically creating, handling or sharing knowledge artifacts: data, academic papers, books, collections, web contents, algorithms, artworks. This devroom provides a place and time to discuss the issues related to the creation and usage of open research technologies, with the ambition to foster discussions between designers, developers and users, bridging multiple knowledge-based communities together, and with the broader FLOSS community. The Open Research devroom aims to: * Allow knowledge-based tool developers to publicize their effort and become aware of other FLOSS projects. * Facilitate the pooling of coding efforts on (often poorly funded) tools. * Create a network where otherwise isolated developers, research engineers can share common FLOSS concerns. * Provide social recognition for people who work in fields where designing and developing tools is less considered than usual outcomes (e.g. not publishing papers in research, not writing investigation in data journalism, etc). For more contextual information, you can also read about the state of the conversation <https://reticular.hypotheses.org/1825> in the devroom in 2020-2021. Cfp for the Decentralised Communication Devroom
by Thibault Martin 07 Nov '25

07 Nov '25

Hi all, You can find a copy of this CfP on the matrix.org website <https://matrix.org/blog/2025/11/fosdem-cfp/>. The Matrix.org Foundation will coordinate the FOSDEM 2026 Decentralised Communication Devroom, and is requesting submissions for talks! One of the most important roles for Free & Open Source Software right now is liberating users from being trapped and exploited by Big Tech. This is especially true of the fundamental need for humanity to communicate safely and securely, without being dependent on gatekeepers who pose a single point of control and failure. We'd like to *invite you to propose technical talks covering the very latest progress across the whole space of Decentralised Communication* - whether that's messaging/VoIP projects built on Matrix, XMPP, DeltaChat, ActivityPub, ATProto, Automerge etc. This isn't just about open standards or realtime communication: this is ensuring that we as individuals have full sovereignty over our ability to communicate - and can do so safely across fully open networks, decentralised across the whole Internet, protected from propaganda and the whims and vicissitudes of today's tech giants and their stakeholders. *We're particularly interested in technical talks on:* - Providing mainstream-usable alternatives to centralised proprietary platforms - Projects and protocols highlighting approaches which other projects and protocols can learn and benefit from - The enormous challenge of safety in decentralised communication: mitigating spam; identifying and filtering slop; sharing blocklists without creating echo-chambers or enabling meta-abuse; protecting E2EE and fighting ChatControl; T&S tooling; etc. - The challenge of verifying E2EE identity (decentralised key transparency etc) - Local-first / P2P communication systems without any point of serverside failure. Marketing talks are not welcome. Key dates Please note the following deadlines, that are global for FOSDEM and that we can't extend. - Conference dates: 31 Jan and 1 Feb 2026 - Submission deadline: 30 November - Announcement of selected talks: 15 December You must be available in person in Brussels <https://fosdem.org/2026/practical/transportation/> to present your talk. Talk Details The talks can follow one of the two formats: - 20 min talk + 10 min Q&A, for topics that can be covered briefly - 50 min talk + 10 min Q&A, for more complex subjects which need more focus We strongly encourage you to prepare a demo when it makes sense, so people can actually see what your work looks like in practice. Of course, the proposal must respect the FOSDEM terms as well: The conference language is English. All content must relate to Free and Open Source Software. By participating in the event you agree to the publication of your recordings, slides and other content provided under the same licence as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY). Code of Conduct All speakers and attendees agree that all of the presentations and discussions in our Devroom are held under the guidelines set in the FOSDEM Code of Conduct <https://fosdem.org/2026/practical/conduct/>. We expect attendees, speakers, and volunteers to follow the CoC at all times. If you have any questions about the CoC or wish to have one of the Devroom organisers review your presentation slides or any other content for CoC compliance, please email us and we will do our best to assist you. Submitting a Proposal Proposals must be submitted on FOSDEM's conference management system <https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2026/cfp>. When submitting a proposal make sure to select the Decentralised Communication Devroom. We expect to receive more requests than we have slots available. The Devroom organisers will be reviewing the proposals and accepting them based on the potential positive impact the project has on the Decentralised Communication space. No particular project or protocol will be favoured or prioritised in selecting talks; instead the most interesting talks will be selected from across all parties, favouring project diversity wherever possible. If a project proposal has been turned down, it doesn't mean we don't believe it has good potential, and we strongly encourage you to highlight it within your ecosystem's news bulletins to give it some visibility. Fringe Event We are currently organising a Fringe Event that will take up the whole day on Friday January 30. If you book your travel and accommodation for FOSDEM, try to arrive on Thursday night to enjoy the full Friday! You can follow our activities on our socials (Fediverse <https://mastodon.matrix.org/@matrix>, LinkedIn <https://www.linkedin.com/company/matrix-org>, Bluesky <https://bsky.app/profile/matrix.org>), you can follow our blog via RSS/atom <https://matrix.org/atom.xml>, or join the Events Working Group Matrix room <https://matrix.to/#/%23events-wg:matrix.org> for updates and to get involved.

Call for Participation: CRA in practice @ FOSDEM 2026
by Roman Zhukov 07 Nov '25

07 Nov '25

# CRA in practice @ FOSDEM 2026 Over the last few years we talked about the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) quite a bit, highlighting its importance and raising awareness. Now we have less than one year until obligations for reporting security vulnerabilities and cyber incidents begin and less than two years until all the CRA requirements become mandatory. It's time to move from awareness ("oh no, regulations") to start actually getting ready ("okay, here's how we actually do this"). This devroom is practical CRA readiness for the FOSS community through open tooling, automation, documentation, and standards alignment that will make CRA compliance achievable and benefit everyone: developers, maintainers, stewards, and manufacturers. Community-driven solutions to regulatory challenges aim to reduce duplicative work, make compliance accessible for small projects without dedicated legal teams, keep the tools and data free, open, and transparent and enable the entire FOSS ecosystem to navigate CRA together. If your session helps developers, projects, or organizations move from awareness to actual readiness, with concrete, open-source solutions, we want to hear from you. We are looking for talks, panels, even workshops that help people take practical, developer-friendly actions. Think demonstrations, case studies, and real experiences, not policy deep-dives or legal strategy sessions. Specifically, we're interested in: - FOSS compliance tools in action: Showcasing what exists (OpenSSF Baseline and Scorecard, security-insights.yaml, SBOM/VEX tooling, etc.), what works, and where the gaps are - Open data and standards: Formats, models, and standards for compliance, security, and supply chain that everyone can use - Practical approaches: Reusable practices that make compliance achievable for projects of all sizes, from solo maintainers to large foundations - Real-world experiences: What FOSS maintainers actually need, what's working, what's painful - CRA readiness strategies: Mapping CRA requirements to concrete tools and workflows, due diligence practices, secure development automation - Ecosystem support: How stewards and foundations (like Linux Foundation, Eclipse, or Python Software Foundation) support their communities and what could be missing - Global framework alignment: Interoperability with US NIST/CISA, UK frameworks, ISO/IEC standards and other global cybersecurity initiatives - Manufacturer Due Diligence: How manufacturers can demonstrate due diligence when using OSS components To keep things focused and practical, we're explicitly leaving these topics to other devrooms and venues: - European policy analysis or legislative interpretation - Open source legal strategy or licensing questions - General CRA policy discussions without case study or technical implementation - Deep-dives into SBOMs (there is a separate room for it) Session Types and Lengths - please indicate your preferred format in your submission: - Lightning talks (10 minutes) – quick insights, new ideas, or fast demos - Standard talks (25 minutes) – deep dives or case studies - Panel (40 min) – cross-role discussions on a key CRA challenge - Workshop (40 min) - hands-on demonstration Important Dates: - CfP opens: 7th November 2025 - CfP closes: 1st December 2025 (23:59 UTC) - Notification of acceptance: mid-December 2025 - Devroom at FOSDEM 2026: Saturday, 31st January 2026, Brussels NOTE: You must be available in person to present your talk. ## How to Submit To submit a talk follow https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2026/cfp, select **CRA in practice** as the *Track* and ensure you include all the requested information when submitting a proposal. Code of Conduct: We'd like to remind all speakers and attendees that all of the presentations and discussions in our devroom are held under the guidelines set forth in the [FOSDEM Code of Conduct](https://fosdem.org/2026/practical/conduct/) and we expect everyone attending to follow it. Would like to volunteer and help onsite or have any questions? Reach out to organizers. Decentralized Internet and Privacy Devroom at FOSDEM 2026 ========================================================= https://decentral.community/FOSDEM2026/ - https://fosdem.org/2026 The Internet landscape is evermore on it’s steadfast course towards surveillance and centralization. Video content and streaming out of CDNs now account for half of all global traffic; splinternets are now a thing, from China to South Korea, from Russia to Iran; mandatory backdoors on communication platforms are just around the conner with EU’s Chat Control. In this scenario, where most Internet connected devices have become tools of imprisonment rather than liberation, reviving the old Internet ethos of peer-to-peer (P2P) and private communication is of uttermost importance. Taking a modest but nonetheless important step, we hereby come to announce the revival of the Decentralized Internet and Privacy Devroom at FOSDEM 2026. This devroom welcomes talks from all technical projects and initiatives which foster decentralization and privacy on the Internet, or try to replace it for something new altogether. We also welcome those working on securing the devices, operating systems and user-facing software we use to access The Net. Scope of Talks ============== Presentation topics may include: - ad-hoc and mesh networks - cryptography-based network stacks - anonymous overlay networks - community run ISPs and networks - decentralized/federated network protocols and platforms - cryptography-based network protocols (e.g. public key as identity) - decentralized instant messaging, video/file sharing and content storage - self-hosting and community-hosting solutions - minimalistic browsers - privacy preserving browsers and extensions - privacy oriented operating systems Format ====== Talks are expected to be technical and no more than 20-25 min long. Total time with Q&A and moderation should stay under 30 min. 50 min long talks (plus 10 min for Q&A and moderation) may be accepted on an exceptional basis, if the topic at hand brings enough novelty to warrant a deep technical dive. Speakers may submit multiple talks. Requirements ============ All talks should be held in English. Talks as well as Q&As will be recorded and later published in the FOSDEM website. They may be also livestreamed. By hosting a talk, you agree to the publication of its recordings, slides and other content under the CC BY 2.0 BE license. While attending FOSDEM, you are required to adhere to the FOSDEM Code of Conduct. Submission ========== https://fosdem.org/submit Talks should be submitted on the FOSDEM pretalx making sure to select “Decentralized Internet and Privacy” in the Track dropdown. Use the submission notes to let us know about: - the talk duration (25 min or 50 min) - links to code, slides or other resources for the talk Key dates ======== Submission deadline: December 7 2025, 23:59 CET Announcement of selected talks: December 15 2025 Devroom day: Sunday, February 1 2026 (full day) Contacts ======== You can reach us at #cdc-public:dod.ngo on Matrix. This room is bridged to #critical-decentralization on hackint IRC server. Email: decentralized-internet-and-privacy-devroom-manager at fosdem.org See you in Brussels, Cheers! dllud
