FOSDEM 2023 In Person – Community DevRoom Call for Participation! The twenty-third edition will take place Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th February 2023 in Brussels, Belgium. Key dates / New updates - Conference dates 4-5 February, 2023 In person - Community DevRoom date: Sunday 5th February - Submission deadline: Monday 21st November - Announcement of selected talks: Thursday 15th December - You must be available in person to present your talk - Talk submissions should be 30 mins and this should include Q&A time. IN MORE DETAIL The Community DevRoom will be back at FOSDEM 2023 (In Person). Our goals in running this DevRoom are to: - Educate those who are primarily software developers on community-oriented topics that are vital in the process of software development, e.g. effective collaboration - Provide concrete advice on dealing with squishy human problems - To unpack preconceived ideas of what community is and the role it plays in human society, free software, and a corporate-dominated world in 2023 - We are seeking proposals on all aspects of creating and nurturing communities for free software projects TALK TOPICS Here are some topics we are interested in hearing more about this year: - Creating local-first communities and authentic and sustainable connections with contributors who are not able to attend in person - Sustainability in FOSS from a community perspective, e.g. keeping contributors motivated and able to pay their bills and addressing maintainer burnout - Creating a community around a corporate sponsored open source project that is respectful of its users and FOSS principles - Self-care in our communities, for both community members and community leaders, e.g. how are we all dealing with burnout and the ongoing impact of the pandemic - Balancing community expectations with company objectives in a manner that is respectful, authentic, and serves both audiences well - Community Management best practices - Dealing with toxic people - Rewarding volunteer contributors and keeping volunteers motivated - Effective collaboration techniques - Recruiting new people to your project - Creative ways to engage and grow your developer community Again, these are just suggestions. We welcome proposals on any aspect of community building! HOW TO SUBMIT A TALK - Head to the FOSDEM 2023 Pentabarf <https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM23> website. - If you already have a Pentabarf account, please don’t create a new one. - If you forgot your password, reset it. - Otherwise, follow the instructions to create an account. - Once logged in, select “Create Event” and click on “Show All” in the top right corner to display the full form. - Your submission must include the following information: - First and last name / Nickname (optional)/ Image - Email address - Mobile phone number (this is a very hard requirement as there will be no other reliable form of emergency communication on the day) - Title and subtitle of your talk (please be descriptive, as titles will be listed with ~500 from other projects) - Track: Select “Community DevRoom” as the track - Event type: Lecture (talk) - Persons: Add yourself as the speaker with your bio - Description: Abstract (required)/ Full Description (optional) - Links to related websites / blogs etc. - Beyond giving us the above, let us know if there’s anything else you’d like to share as part of your submission – Twitter handle, GitHub activity history – whatever works for you. We especially welcome videos of you speaking elsewhere, or even just a list of talks you have done previously. First time speakers are, of course, welcome! - For issues with Pentabarf, please contact community-devroom(a)lists.fosdem.org. Feel free to send a notification of your submission to that email. If you need to get in touch with the organisers or program committee of the Community DevRoom, email us at community-devroom(a)lists.fosdem.org Shirley Bailes, Leslie Hawthorn, and Laura Czajkowski - Community DevRoom Co-Organizers FOSDEM website <https://fosdem.org/2023/> / FOSDEM code of conduct <https://fosdem.org/2023/practical/conduct/>

At long last, the upcoming FOSDEM 23 will once again take place **IRL** at the [Université libre de Bruxelles, Belgium](https://fosdem.org/2023/practical/transportation/). ### What is FOSDEM? ~~Stolen~~/Borrowed from the website: _**FOSDEM is a free event for software developers to meet, share ideas and collaborate.** Every year, thousands of developers of free and open source software from all over the world gather at the event in Brussels._ #### Important stuff: - FOSDEM is free to attend. There is no registration. - [FOSDEM website](https://fosdem.org/) - [FOSDEM code of conduct](https://fosdem.org/2023/practical/conduct/) - [Emulator devroom schedule](https://fosdem.org/2023/schedule/track/emulator_development/) ### Desirable topics Really **anything** goes, but here are some ideas (for inspiration): - Console emulator development - Computer emulator development - Hardware on hardware emulation - OS emulation development - Virtual Machine development - Emulation history - ... #### Desirable speakers We honestly don't care. FOSDEM 2023: call for devrooms
by Johan Van de Wauw 29 Sep '22

29 Sep '22

We now invite proposals for developer rooms for FOSDEM 2023. Invitations to submit proposals for other elements of the event will follow in the next couple of weeks. FOSDEM offers open source and free software developers a place to meet, share ideas and collaborate. Renowned for being highly developer-oriented, the event brings together some 8000+ geeks from all over the world. The twenty-third edition will take place Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th February 2023 in Brussels, Belgium. Developer rooms are assigned to self-organising groups to work together on open source and free software projects, to discuss topics relevant to a broader subset of the community, etc. Most content should take the form of presentations. Proposals involving collaboration across project or domain boundaries are strongly encouraged. We are happy that we have the opportunity again to run a physical conference in Brussels. However, this also means that we will have less space for parallel tracks. That's why we are polling devroom organisers to see if they have any interest in a hybrid session, eg with a physical devroom one day and a virtual session the next day, or even if people would prefer an online devroom only. For virtual devrooms we would use the same Matrix platform as last year. This allows devroom organizers to run the conference primarily using pre-recorded talks with some live content including Q&A sessions and discussion panels, with streaming and archiving. The recordings will be published under the same licence as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY). Note that we might decide not to run a virtual component if there is insufficient interest. Devroom managers must enter a complete schedule into our conference system by 15th December. Developer room proposals should be submitted through the form at https://fosdem.org/devroom which contains further information. When applying, please indicate your preferred devroom duration. Note that given the limited number of rooms, two physical days will not be an option Questions or remarks? Contact us at devrooms(a)fosdem.org. Key dates: 18 October * deadline for developer room proposals 31 October * accepted developer rooms announced 5 November (or earlier) * developer rooms issue Calls for Participation 15 December (or earlier) * developer rooms publish complete schedules

Announcement on the future of this mailing list
by FOSDEM 15 Sep '22

15 Sep '22

As you may have noticed, this mailing list has been in full moderation mode for several months. We recognise that this mailing list no longer performs its original function and most subscribers have moved their communications to other mediums. Few relevant discussions take place and we cannot condone the contents of all the messages that have appeared. As a result, while we have decided to preserve the mailing list and subscribers, in future only messages submitted by the FOSDEM organisation will be allowed on this list. We intend to automate these submissions as much as possible, with the intention of keeping the content we deliver via this list as up-to-date and relevant as the other mediums we use. Thank you for your understanding, and thank you for your participation in FOSDEM over the years. The FOSDEM organisation

There were a bunch of talks I didn't manage to see. Are the videos going to come back online at some point? Or do I need to contact each speaker individually and ask if they kept a copy? :-( -- Liam Proven – Profile: https://about.me/liamproven Email: lproven(a)cix.co.uk – gMail/gTalk/gHangouts: lproven(a)gmail.com Twitter/Facebook/LinkedIn/Flickr: lproven – Skype: liamproven UK: +44 7939-087884 – ČR (+ WhatsApp/Telegram/Signal): +420 702 829 053

16 Jan '22

Hi :) Yesterday I’ve finally found the time to update FosdemToGo for iOS (https://apps.apple.com/at/app/fosdemtogo/id1500192366?l=en) for 2022. Version 0.3.3 has also already made it into the AppStore. Is there anything I can do to get it listed on https://fosdem.org/2022/schedule/mobile/? Cheers, Horst
