[CFP] LLVM toolchain devroom CFP at FOSDEM 2019
by Kristof Beyls 19 Nov '18

19 Nov '18

*CALL FOR PAPERS / PARTICIPATION* At FOSDEM 2019, LLVM will again participate with a dedicated devroom, on February 3rd, in Brussels. As possibly the largest European Open Source Conference, FOSDEM attracts more than 600 lectures and over 8000 hackers - many core contributors of the worlds leading open source projects. Complementing the LLVM developer meetings, the devroom at FOSDEM provides a great opportunity for LLVM developers and the wider open source community to get together, connect and discuss. We invite academic, industrial and hobbyist speakers to present their work on developing or using LLVM, Clang, LLDB, Polly, Compiler-rt, etc. We are looking for: - Keynote speakers. - Technical presentations (30 minutes plus questions and discussion) related to development of LLVM, Clang etc. - Presentations about the use of LLVM, Clang in commercial, academic, hobbyist and other projects. - Tutorials. - Lightning talks (5 minutes). - Demos. The deadline for receiving proposals is Sunday November 25th, 2018. Speakers will be notified of acceptance or rejection by December 11th. Please find some advice on what constitutes a good proposal at the end of this CFP. To submit a proposal, please create an account on the FOSDEM interface (https://penta.fosdem.org/user/new_account) If you already have an account from previous years, please reuse that. Submit your proposal following https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM19, “Create Event”. Please make sure you select "LLVM devroom" as the "Track”. Presentations will be recorded and streamed. Sending your proposal implies giving permission to be recorded. However, exceptions can be made for exceptional circumstances. *Registration* FOSDEM does not require any registration and is free of charge. *Organization* The mailing list llvm-devroom at lists.fosdem.org can be used to discuss issues of general interest related to the conference organization. Please, do not reply to this email, as it is cross posted to many lists. *Financial support* There may be a possibility of limited funding to help presenting students or presenting contributors who could not otherwise attend the conference. If you need funding to be able to present at the meeting, or can help sponsor, please tell us on llvm-devroom at lists.fosdem.org. *Guidance on writing a proposal for the LLVM Dev Room* This is a guide to help you submit a good proposal and increase your chances of your proposal being accepted. If you have never presented at an LLVM meeting, then do not fear this process. We are actively looking for new speakers who are excited about LLVM and helping grow the community through these educational talks! You do not need to be a long time developer to submit a proposal. General Guidelines: - It should be clear from your abstract what your topic is, who your targeted audience is, and what are the takeaways for attendees. The program committee does not have time to read 10 page papers for each submission. - Talks about a use of LLVM (etc) should include details about how LLVM is used and not only be about the resulting application. - Tutorials on “how to use X” in LLVM (or other subproject) are greatly desired and beneficial to many developers. Entry level topics are encouraged as well. - Typically a few paragraphs are sufficient. Best regards, LLVM @ FOSDEM organisers

FOSDEM 2019: Graphics DevRoom: Call for speakers.
by Luc Verhaegen 19 Nov '18

19 Nov '18

Hi, At FOSDEM on saturday the 3rd of february 2018, there will be another graphics DevRoom. URL: https://fosdem.org/2018/ The focus of this DevRoom is of course the same as the previous editions, namely: * Graphics drivers: from display to media to 3d drivers, both in kernel or userspace. Be it part of DRM, KMS, V4L, (direct)FB, Xorg, Mesa... * Input drivers: kernel and userspace. * Windowing systems: X, Wayland, Mir, directFB, ... * Even colour management, low level toolkit stuff, and other areas which i might have overlooked above are accepted. Slots will be handed out on a first come, first serve basis. The best slots will go to those who apply the earliest. We have the devroom from 10:30 til 19:00, giving us 8h30, so eight 50 minute talkes and one 20 minute talk are available. Talk Submission: ---------------- Like the last few years, the pentabarf system will be used for talk submission. https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM19 Remember that FOSDEM is not like XDC, it's not some 50 odd people meeting with a sliding schedule which only gets filled out on the last day. Upwards of 10000 people are visiting this event, and most of them get a printed booklet or use the schedule on the FOSDEM website or an app for their phone to figure out what to watch or participate in next. So please put some effort in your talk submission and details. Since this an open source community event, please refrain from turning in a talk that is a pure corporate or product commercial. Also, if you are unsure on whether you can come or not (this is FOSDEM, why are you not there anyway?), please wait with submitting your talk until you do. When in pentabarf, please give the abstract and description, for both the event and the speaker, some thought. The abstract should be a shortened description, and the event abstract will sometimes even be printed directly in the booklet. BUT, on the website the abstract is immediately followed by the full description. If your abstract is fully descriptive, while terse, you might get away with just the abstract. All talks will be recorded, and will be streamed out live, and will later be made available as CC-BY after a few days. As for deadlines, the fosdem organizers want to have a finished schedule by the 14th of december. Don't count on this deadline: first come first serve! The worst slots will be assigned to those who come last, which could be pretty dire given that there is the traditional FOSDEM beer event the night before ;) Please try to re-use your accounts from the previous years. If you have forgotten your password, then you can reset it here: https://penta.fosdem.org/user/forgot_password If there are any issues, just poke me here or on IRC. Necessary information: ---------------------- Below is a list of what i need to see filled in in pentabarf when you apply for a devroom before i consider it a valid submission. Remember: first come, first serve. The best slots (which are on saturday afternoon) are for the earliest submissions. On your personal page: * General: * First and last name * Nickname * Image * Contact: * email address * mobile number (this is a very hard requirement as there will be no other reliable form of emergency communication on the day) * Description: * Abstract * Description Create an event: * On the General page: * Event title * Event subtitle. * Track: Graphics Devroom * Event type: Lecture (talk) or Meeting (BoF) * Persons: * Add yourself as speaker. * Description: * Abstract: * Full Description * Links: * Add relevant links. The mobile phone number is the hardest requirement, so you can be contacted on-the-day when something comes up. Speakers will all receive my mobile number in return. Everything else can be ignored or will be filled in by me or the FOSDEM organizers. Remember, i will only schedule your talk after the basics are somewhat filled in (you still can change them until december 14th). I will be keeping a keen eye on your submissions and will come back with further questions or make small fixes as needed. Feel free to poke me with any questions or anything, both on irc (libv@freenode) and on email. That's about it. Hope to see you all at FOSDEM :) Luc Verhaegen.

FOSDEM 2019 - Quantum computing devroom CfP
by Tomas Babej 18 Nov '18

18 Nov '18

We are happy to announce a call for participation in a first-ever developer room dedicated to Quantum Computing! The developer room will take place at the FOSDEM conferrence in Brussels on Saturday, February 2nd 2019. Organization of the room is stewarded by newly formed Quantum Open Source Foundation (https://qosf.org) whose mission is to ensure this new emerging computing paradigm is accessible using free and open source technology stack. Submit proposals either using the FOSDEM submission system: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM19 or using email address: fosdem19(a)qosf.org Submission deadline is Dec 11th, 23.59 UTC. Speakers will be notified on Dec 13th and schedule will be made public on Dec 15th. === Why to participate === Quantum computing is a new emerging field that coming out of the lab and finding its applications in the real world. The space of the open source software for quantum computing is blooming with this trend, with researchers and hardware providers alike investing in creating software infrastructure for this new computing paradigm. With that in mind, the purpose of this devroom is twofold: - to flatten down the learning curve and break perceived barriers that prevent developers from entering the field of quantum software development - to ensure that the field is dominated by high-quality, community driven FOSS open source software, standards and protocols Many of the players have open sourced libraries to build quantum computing circuits and interact with their platforms, both actual hardware and simulators. However, not enough attention is given to building a wider quantum computing community and current trajectory leads to multiple silos, projects that are driven by commercial interest without liberal community driven governance structure. FOSDEM is one of the largest gatherings of open source community in the world, which happens yearly at the ULB Capus Solbosch, Brussels, Belgium. As such, it is an ideal place not only to showcase and discuss new ideas and developments in the space of quantum computing, but also help break down the barriers in adopting quantum computing by software developers. === Submission topics === We welcome submissions that are devoted to the following topics: * Introduction of open source projects in quantum computing * Future directions and roadmaps of existing projects * Use-cases and experiences of using existing open source software projects for quantum computing research and quantum software development * Identification of possible gaps in the space of open source for quantum computing * Discussions about the state of the open source community and possible ways of improving it and other topics that relate to quantum computing software. === Talk formats and instructions === We encourage both talks and workshop formats. We suggest following durations, including questions: * 20 min - lighting talks * 45-60 min - talks * 90-120 min - workshops Note that the talks at FOSDEM are captured (and streamed) under the CC-BY licence. Speakers are hence required to give permission to being recorded. Pentabarf instructions: To submit your talk, click on "Create Event" and then select the "Quantum computing" as the "Track". If you have already spoken at FOSDEM previously, please re-use your account. On behalf of the organizational team, Tomas Babej

CfP - Ada Developer Room at FOSDEM 2019, Brussels, Belgium
by Dirk.Craeynest＠cs.kuleuven.be 16 Nov '18

16 Nov '18

----------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Presentations 9th Ada Developer Room at FOSDEM 2019 Saturday 2 February 2019, Brussels, Belgium http://www.cs.kuleuven.be/~dirk/ada-belgium/events/19/190202-fosdem.html Organized in cooperation with Ada-Europe ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Ada-Belgium [1] is pleased to announce that there will be a one-day Ada Developer Room on Saturday 2 February 2019 at FOSDEM 2019 in Brussels, Belgium. This Ada DevRoom is once more organized in cooperation with Ada-Europe [2]. General Information ------------------- FOSDEM [3], the Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting, is a free and non-commercial two-day weekend event organized early each year in Brussels, Belgium. It is highly developer-oriented and brings together 8000+ participants from all over the world. No registration is necessary. The goal is to provide open source developers and communities a place to meet with other developers and projects, to be informed about the latest developments in the open source world, to attend interesting talks and presentations on various topics by open source project leaders and committers, and to promote the development and the benefits of open source solutions. Ada Programming Language and Technology --------------------------------------- Awareness of safety and security issues in software systems is increasing. Multi-core platforms are now abundant. These are some of the reasons that the Ada programming language and technology attracts more and more attention, among others due to Ada's support for programming by contract and for multi-core targets. The latest Ada language definition was updated early 2016. Work on new features is ongoing, such as improved support for fine-grained parallelism, and will result in a new Ada standard scheduled for 2020. Ada-related technology such as SPARK provides a solution for the safety and security aspects stated above. More and more tools are available, many are open source, including for small and recent platforms. Interest in Ada keeps increasing, also in the open source community, and many exciting projects have been started. Ada Developer Room ------------------ FOSDEM is an ideal fit for an Ada Developer Room. On the one hand, it gives the general open source community an opportunity to see what is happening in the Ada community and how Ada technology can help to produce reliable and efficient open source software. On the other hand, it gives open source Ada projects an opportunity to present themselves, get feedback and ideas, and attract participants to their project and collaboration between projects. At previous FOSDEM events, the Ada-Belgium non-profit organization organized very well attended Ada Developer Rooms, offering a full day program in 2006 [4], a two-day program in 2009 [5], and full day programs in 2012 [6], 2013 [7], 2014 [8], 2015 [9], 2016 [10], and 2018 [11]. An important goal is to present exciting Ada technology and projects also to people outside the traditional Ada community. Our proposal for another dedicated Ada DevRoom was accepted, and now work continues to prepare the detailed program. We most probably will have a total of 8 schedulable hours between 11:00 and 19:00 in one of the rooms which accommodate from 59 to 85 participants. More information will be posted on the dedicated web-page on the Ada-Belgium site [12], and final announcements will of course also be sent to various forums, lists and newsgroups. Call for Presentations ---------------------- We would like to schedule technical presentations, tutorials, demos, live performances, project status reports, discussions, etc, in the Ada Developer Room. Ada-Belgium calls on you to: - inform us at ada-belgium-board(a)cs.kuleuven.be about specific presentations you would like to hear in this Ada DevRoom; - for bonus points, subscribe to the Ada-FOSDEM mailing list [13] to discuss and help organize the details; - for more bonus points, be a speaker: the Ada-FOSDEM mailing list is the place to be! Do you have a talk you want to give? Do you have a project you would like to present? Would you like to get more people involved with your project? We're inviting proposals that are related to Ada software development, and include a technical oriented discussion. You're not limited to slide presentations, of course. Be creative. Propose something fun to share with people so they might feel some of your enthusiasm for Ada! Speaking slots are either 15 or 45 minutes, plus 5 minutes for Q&A. Depending on interest, we might also have a session with lightning presentations (e.g. 5 minutes each). Note that all talks will be streamed live (audio+video) and recorded, for remote as well as later viewing of talks, and so that people can watch streams in the hallways when rooms are full. By submitting a proposal, you agree to being recorded and streamed, and agree the content of your talk will be published under the same license as all FOSDEM content, a Creative Commons (CC-BY) license. Submission Guidelines --------------------- Subscribe to the Ada-FOSDEM mailing list [13], and submit your proposal there. If needed, feel free to contact us at ada-belgium-board(a)cs.kuleuven.be. Please include: - your name, affiliation, contact info; - the title of your talk (be descriptive and creative); - a short descriptive and attractive abstract; - potentially pointers to more information; - a short bio and photo. See programs of previous Ada DevRooms (URLs below) for presentation examples, as well as for the kind of info we need. We'd like to put together a draft schedule by early December. So, please act ASAP, and definitely by Saturday December 1, 2018 at the latest. We look forward to lots of feedback and proposals! Call for Participation: Legal and Policy Issues DevRoom at FOSDEM 2019
by Tom Marble 15 Nov '18

15 Nov '18

########################################################################### Call For Participation Legal and Policy Issues DevRoom at FOSDEM 2019 CONFERENCE DATE: Saturday & Sunday 2-3 February 2019 in Brussels, Belgium DEVROOM DATE: Saturday 2 February 2019 CFP DEADLINE: Sunday 23 November 2018 at 23:59 AoE (Anywhere on Earth) SPEAKERS NOTIFIED: Sunday 7 December 2018 (on or before) CFP Introduction ================ Copyright law provides many of the basic legal underpinnings of Open Source and Free Software. Patent and trademark law and legal frameworks relating to data privacy and security also have significant effects on Free Software development. Governance and policies around free software projects set the rules for collaboration and can be critical to a project's success. Our community has substantial expertise in this area yet there are few venues to discuss these matters in a forum open to all. Hackers, lawyers, policy experts, and community leaders all possess expertise in these matters. TL;DR ===== Hackers, contributors and lawyers alike are encouraged to submit on any project policy or legal topic. Successful proposals will cover topics of interest at a medium to advanced level. Fill out an application on FOSDEM's Pentabarf. (See below for details.) Topics Sought ============= This DevRoom seeks proposals for 25 minute talks and/or open discussion sessions in an unconference format that address issues of software freedom project policies and legal issues that extend beyond and/or are orthogonal to technical issues faced by projects. Such topics could include, but aren't necessarily limited to: * Who controls the copyright, trademark, or patent licensing, release plans, CLA administration, or security bug reporting policies of your project, and why? What challenges have you faced in these policy areas and how are you seeking to change it? * How is your project governed? Do you have a non-profit organization, or a for-profit company that primarily controls your project, or neither? Do you wish your project governance was different? Who decided your governance initially? What politics (good and bad) have occurred around your governance choices and how have you changed your policy? Does your project have a "shadow governance", whereby technical governance is open and fair, but some entity has its own opaque political structure that influences your project? Are you worried that your project might and you don't know? Are you exploring any new solutions for governance? Do you want to ask questions of a room full of experts about your project's governance? * Legal topics of all sorts and their interaction with software freedom culture and work remain welcome, and could include: How does your project make use of legal advice? What legal advice do you give projects and what topics do you put first on the list to worry about in projects? Discuss in detail a legal and/or policy issue your project faced and how your community dealt with it. What lessons did you learn? Are some of your developers afraid to discuss legal or quasi-legal issues without their lawyers, or their employers' lawyers, present? How has that impeded or helped your project? Are your lawyers really your lawyers (e.g., do corporate lawyers for companies in your community advise the project even though not all contributors work for that company)? * Contribution and engagement policies: how does your project engage new contributors and what policy decisions did your project make to welcome new contributors? What legal issues or policy concerns has your project faced historically in its community engagement efforts, and what did you learn from these experiences? * How does money affect your community? How is funding of developers handled in your project? What policies do you set to welcome volunteers to join a community where most developers are paid? Does your project have policies that forbid funding developers directly? Does reliance on volunteer labor lead to lack of diversity since only the affluent can participate? If you had unconstrained resources at your disposal, what would you change about the funding structure of your project? Given the resources you have, what have you tried to change? Have you succeeded or failed? Would more money in the ecosystem hurt or help your project? * How do projects handle conflicts of interest and make sure that relevant interests of contributors are disclosed in important decision making discussions? * Strategies and plans for addressing harassment, exclusionary and/or discriminatory behavior in FLOSS communities. Do you have a Code of Conduct? Have you needed to enforce it? Was it successful in improving behavior and diversity in your community? * Talks on license compliance, licensing business models, and anything akin to, or building upon, what you've seen in our DevRoom before are of course welcome. (URLs to talks from previous years are below.) Regarding topic relevancy, here's the only "don't": please don't propose introductory talks; there are other venues appropriate for those. FOSDEM is the meeting place of experts in Open Source and Free Software project governance, law, and policy. This DevRoom is for intermediate to advanced topics surrounding just about anything you might call a "legal" or "policy" issue for your project! Should I Submit? ================ However, do consider that what may seem elementary to you may in fact be an intermediate topic in this area. In particular, while we expect to receive submissions from lawyers, we've found in our careers that non-lawyers often know just as much (and often more) about these topics than lawyers. Developers and other Free Software project participants who regularly face complex policy and legal questions are strongly and particularly encouraged to submit proposals. Historically, some of the most lively and intriguing talks in this DevRoom's previous years have been from developers who have been thrust (often due to circumstances beyond their control) into dealing with legal and policy issues for Open Source and Free Software. Look at past talks in our DevRoom for inspiration: https://archive.fosdem.org/2018/schedule/track/legal_and_policy_issues/ https://archive.fosdem.org/2017/schedule/track/legal_and_policy_issues/ https://archive.fosdem.org/2016/schedule/track/legal_and_policy_issues/ https://archive.fosdem.org/2015/schedule/track/legal_and_policy_issues/ https://archive.fosdem.org/2014/schedule/track/legal_and_policy_issues/ https://archive.fosdem.org/2013/schedule/track/legal_issues/ https://archive.fosdem.org/2012/schedule/track/legal_issues_devroom.html Maybe your topic would be an even better fit for the Community DevRoom? We are explicitly coordinating with the organizers of the Community DevRoom this year to ensure there is not as much overlap between the program in both rooms as there were in years past. See that CFP here: https://lists.fosdem.org/pipermail/fosdem/2018q4/thread.html Separately you may be interested in the Copyleft Conference which occurs the Monday after FOSDEM. For more information please see https://2019.copyleftconf.org/program/call-for-proposals CFP Schedule And Submission Details =================================== Submit proposals NO LATER THAN 23 November 2018 at 23:59 AoE (Anywhere on Earth) Please use the following URL to submit your talk to FOSDEM 2019: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM19 and follow these rules: * Select as the Track "Legal and Policy Issues devroom". * Include a title. (Note that "Subtitle" entry doesn't appear on all conference documents, so make sure "Title" can stand on its own without "Subtitle" present.) * Include an Abstract of about 500 characters and a full description of any length you wish, but in both fields, please be concise, but clear and descriptive. * Indicate a 25 minute time slot. If you select any other time amount, your submission is very likely to be rejected. Only choose a longer slot if your proposal is exceptionally interesting and is a group discussion rather than a solo talk. * Use the "Links" sub-area to your past work in the field you'd like to share. Particularly helpful are recordings (audio/video) of your past talks on the subject or past papers/blog posts you've written on the subject. * You are encouraged to enter biographic information under the "Person" section (e.g. you may upload an image, enter your background in the "Description" tab, and sites of interest under the "Links" tab). * State that you agree to CC BY-SA-4.0 or CC BY-4.0 licensing of your talk in the "Submission Notes" field. Add a statement such as this: "Should my presentation be scheduled for FOSDEM 2019, I hereby agree to license all recordings, slides and any other materials presented under the Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 4.0 International license. * Also in the notes field, confirm your availability to speak on Saturday, 2 February 2019 in Brussels. (You may include time slots of non-availability on Saturday, but this may negatively affect acceptance decisions.) Failure to follow these instructions above (and those on the FOSDEM 2019 site) may result in automatic rejection of your talk submission. However, if you have trouble with submission via the official system, please do contact <fosdem-legal-policy at faif.us> for assistance. Diversity Statement ------------------- The organizers of this DevRoom are committed to increasing the diversity of the free software movement. To that end, our CFP process takes demographic information into account in order to build a program that features as many different voices and perspectives as possible. If you are comfortable doing so, please share any demographic information about yourself in the "Submissions Notes". Such disclosure is not mandatory by any means. No Assurance of Acceptance -------------------------- The organizers (listed below) realize many of our friends and colleagues will respond to this CFP. We welcome submissions from all, but an invitation from any of us to submit is *not* an assurance of acceptance. We typically must make hard decisions. This year, our DevRoom is one day, so unfortunately we expect that most proposals will be rejected. Please, submit your best possible work and put effort into crafting your submission to give yourself the best chance of acceptance. About the DevRoom Organizers ============================ The co-organizers of the FOSDEM 2019 Legal and Policy Issues DevRom are (in alphabetical order by surname): - Richard Fontana, Member of Board of Directors of the Open Source Initiative; Senior Commercial Counsel, Red Hat - Bradley M. Kuhn, Distinguished Technologist of Software Freedom Conservancy and Member of Board of Directors of the Free Software Foundation - Tom Marble, Creative Technologist, Informatique, Inc. - Karen Sandler, Executive Director of the Software Freedom Conservancy, pro bono counsel to the Free Software Foundation and the GNOME Foundation, Visiting Scholar/Faculty team of Center for Research in Open Source Software, University of California Santa Cruz You are welcome to contact us all at <fosdem-legal-policy at faif.us> with questions about this CFP. ###########################################################################
