by Andreas 'ads' Scherbaum 04 Nov '18

04 Nov '18

FOSDEM PGDay 2019 is a one day conference that will be held ahead of the main FOSDEM event in Brussels, Belgium, on Feb 1st, 2019. This will be a one-day PostgreSQL focused event with a single track of talks. This conference day will be for-charge with a registration of 50€, and will be held at the Brussels Marriott Hotel. Registration is required to attend and since we have a limited number of seats available for this event, we urge everybody to register as soon as possible once open. PostgreSQL Europe will also have our regular devroom at the main FOSDEM event during the weekend. This day will, of course, continue to be free of charge and open to all FOSDEM entrants. No registration is required to attend this day. For full details about the conference, venue and hotel, see the event website at https://2019.fosdempgday.org/. The call for papers is now open for both FOSDEM PGDay and our devroom. We are looking for talks to fill both these days with content for both insiders and new users. Submissions can be made to both events, or just one, please note in the submission form at which event you are interested in presenting. Note that we are NOT using the FOSDEM Pentabarf system for submissions. The website has all the details at https://2019.fosdempgday.org/callforpapers/. The deadline for submissions is November 19th, 2018, so get your submissions in soon! We also have a special negotiated bedroom rate with the Brussels Marriott Hotel. FOSDEM 2019 Hardware Enablement Devroom Call for Participation
by Paul Kocialkowski 03 Nov '18

03 Nov '18

Hi, The Hardware Enablement devroom is back for a second year at FOSDEM! It will take place on Sunday 3 February 2019. # Call for Participation We are opening the call for participation to our devroom, with the deadline for talk proposals set to Saturday 1 December 2018. # Devroom Scope This devroom covers topics related to hardware support and enablement with free software. It includes the following topics: * peripheral/controller firmwares * boot software * kernel drivers and hardware interfaces * hardware-related adaptation in operating systems * tools for firmware flashing * tools for low-level development Despite this large scope, the focus of the devroom is set on highlighting the technical aspects of the hardware and its enablement in free projects, rather than the specific applications and use cases that benefit from it. We also want to avoid purely commercial vague talks with marketing content, which leave little place to technical aspects. This year, we are looking to particularly highlighting free software outside of the operating system boundaries, especially with boot software as well as controller and peripheral firmwares. # Talk Format Since no Embedded devroom is taking place this year (and our devroom also covers embedded devices), we are expecting a significant number of submissions. In order to cover as much ground as we can, a new talk will be scheduled every half-hour, so accepted talks will follow this format: 20 minutes for the talk + 5 minutes for questions + 5 minutes for speaker setup We ask speakers to be present in the room before their talk so that speaker setup can go smoothly. # Submission Talks that fit in our devroom's scope can be submitted to the FOSDEM Pentabarf interface at https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM19 We encourage reusing accounts from previous years instead of creating new ones: * lost password: https://penta.fosdem.org/user/forgot_password * new Account: https://penta.fosdem.org/user/new_account/FOSDEM19 Here are a few guidelines when submitting a talk: * select the Hardware Enablement devroom as track * include an abstract for every submission and optionally a full description * make sure your contact details are up to date # Video Talks will be streamed live during the event and recorded. They will be available under a Creative Commons Attribution (BY) license later. # Contact For more information or questions about the devroom and this CFP, feel free to email hardware-devroom-manager at fosdem.org We're looking forward to lots of interesting proposals and hoping to see you all in Brussels at the event! Cheers, Paul for the Hardware Enablement devroom

The dev-room is only on Sunday, 3rd of February 2019. The lounge will be present for both days. To discuss the dev-room and lounge, please join the Free RTC mailing list: http://lists.freertc.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss To be kept aware of major developments in Free RTC, without being on the discussion list, please join the Free-RTC Announce list: http://lists.freertc.org/mailman/listinfo/announce Speaking opportunities ---------------------- Note: if you used FOSDEM Pentabarf before, please use the same account/username Real-Time Communications dev-room: deadline 23:59 UTC on 2nd of December. Please use the Pentabarf system to submit a talk proposal for the dev-room. On the "General" tab, please look for the "Track" option and choose "Real Time Communications devroom". https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM19/ Other dev-rooms and lightning talks: some speakers may find their topic is in the scope of more than one dev-room. It is encouraged to apply to more than one dev-room and also consider proposing a lightning talk, but please be kind enough to tell us if you do this by filling out the notes in the form. You can find the full list of dev-rooms at https://www.fosdem.org/2019/schedule/tracks/ and apply for a lightning talk at https://fosdem.org/submit Main track: the deadline for main track presentations is 23:59 UTC 3rd of November. Leading developers in the Real-Time Communications field are encouraged to consider submitting a presentation to the main track at https://fosdem.org/submit First-time speaking? -------------------- FOSDEM dev-rooms are a welcoming environment for people who have never given a talk before. Please feel free to contact the dev-room administrators personally if you would like to ask any questions about it. Submission guidelines --------------------- The Pentabarf system will ask for many of the essential details. Please remember to re-use your account from previous years if you have one. In the "Submission notes", please tell us about: - the purpose of your talk - any other talk applications (dev-rooms, lightning talks, main track) - availability constraints and special needs You can use HTML and links in your bio, abstract and description. If you maintain a blog, please consider providing us with the URL of a feed with posts tagged for your RTC-related work. We will be looking for relevance to the conference and dev-room themes, presentations aimed at developers of free and open source software about RTC-related topics. Please feel free to suggest a duration between 20 minutes and 55 minutes but note that the final decision on talk durations will be made by the dev-room administrators based on the number of received proposals. As the two previous dev-rooms have been combined into one, we may decide to give shorter slots than in previous years so that more speakers can participate. Please note FOSDEM aims to record and live-stream all talks. The CC-BY license is used. Volunteers needed ================= To make the dev-room and lounge run successfully, we are looking for volunteers: - FOSDEM provides video recording equipment and live streaming, volunteers are needed to assist in this - organizing one or more restaurant bookings (dependending upon number of participants) for the evening of Saturday, 2nd of February - participation in the Real-Time lounge - helping attract sponsorship funds for the dev-room to pay for the Saturday night dinner and any other expenses - circulating this Call for Participation to other mailing lists Social events and dinners ========================= The traditional FOSDEM beer night occurs on Friday, 1st of February. On Saturday night, there are usually dinners associated with each of the dev-rooms. Most restaurants in Brussels are not so large so these dinners have space constraints and reservations are essential. Please subscribe to the Free-RTC mailing list for further details about the Saturday night dinner options and how you can register for a seat: http://lists.freertc.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss Spread the word and discuss =========================== If you know of any mailing lists where this CfP would be relevant, please forward this email. FOSDEM 2019 - Free Java Tools and Editors DevRoom CfP
by geertjan.wielenga＠oracle.com 29 Oct '18

29 Oct '18

Dear friends and fans of free tools and editors everywhere, Next year's FOSDEM (the free and open source developer's meeting in Brussels, Europe) will for the very first time feature a track dedicated to developers and users of free tools and editors: https://fosdem.org/2019/schedule/track/free_tools_and_editors/ CALL FOR PARTICIPATION We therefore invite developers and users of free tools and editors of all kinds to participate in this track and present your projects, roadmaps, demos, hacks, and codes. At FOSDEM, we hope to network all these projects and improve collaboration, bring new ideas forward, and get more people involved. To suggest a talk, go to the following location: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM19 ...and follow the instructions (you need an account, but can use your account from last year if you have one). You need to create an 'Event’; make sure it's in the "Free Tools and Editors devroom”. Lengths aren’t fixed, but please give a realistic estimate and please don't exceed 30 minutes unless you have something special planned (in that case, contact one of us). Also, don't forget to include time for Q&A. We will typically go for 30-minute slots -- shorter talks, unless they're really short, usually tend to mess up the schedule too much. You aren't limited to slide presentations, of course — in fact, we hope you’ll focus on code. Be creative. However, FOSDEM is an open source conference, therefore we ask you to stay very clear of marketing presentations and focus on presenting something relevant to free/open software. We like nitty-gritty technical stuff. Topics discussed in this devroom can relate to any programming language, and focus on: * Libraries and frameworks * Code generators * Code editors * Visual tools IMPORTANT DATES FOSDEM is February 2nd and 3rd, 2019. * December 7 2018: Submission Deadline * December 15 2018: Schedule is finalized. We will announce the detailed agenda shortly after that. * February 3 2019: The devroom takes places FOSDEM is always full to the brim with presentations, so if you want to present, please make sure to submit your abstracts soon! CONTACT The track committee consists of: * Trisha Gee (JetBrains) * Lars Vogel (Eclipse) * Johan Vos (Gluon) * Geertjan Wielenga (NetBeans) Hope to hear from you soon! And please forward this announcement. Trisha, Lars, Johan, and Geertjan

We are not afraid of technical stuff: devrooms are a place for development teams to meet, discuss, hack and publicly present their project’s latest improvements and future directions. If you will have special needs for your talk (e. g. because you will need to plug some sort of a system), please note that clearly in your proposal so that we can provide it. You can use the Wikipedia definition of retrocomputing as a reference definition to see if you talk qualifies, although it is not exclusive: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retrocomputing IMPORTANT DATES - 30 November 2018: submission deadline for talk proposals - 16 December 2018: announcement of the final schedule - 2 February 2019: Retrocomputing DevRoom USEFUL INFORMATION Use the FOSDEM Pentabarf tool to submit your proposal: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM19 - If necessary, create a Pentabarf account and activate it. Select the "Retrocomputing DevRoom" track (on the "General" tab). If you do not select a track, then nobody, from any track, will look at your submission! - Provide the title of your talk ("Event title" in the "General" tab). - Provide a description of the subject of the talk and the intended audience (in the "Abstract" field of the "Description" tab) - Provide a rough outline of the talk or goals of the session (a short list of bullet points covering topics that will be discussed) in the "Full description" field in the "Description" tab - Provide an expected length of your talk in the "Duration" field, including discussion. The default duration is 30 minutes. Please note neither FOSDEM nor the Retrocomputing DevRoom will reimburse any expenses you incur RECORDING OF TALKS The FOSDEM organizers plan to have live streaming and recording fully working, both for remote/later viewing of talks, and so that people can watch streams in the hallways when rooms are full. This requires speakers to consent to being recorded and streamed. If you plan to be a speaker, please understand that by doing so you implicitly give consent for your talk to be recorded and streamed. The recordings will be published under the same license as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY). Hope to hear from you soon! And please forward this announcement.
