[CFP] Decentralized Internet & Privacy devroom
by Loïc Dachary 16 Oct '18

16 Oct '18

Welcome to Decentralized Internet & Privacy at FOSDEM 2019 (Brussels, Belgium, February 2nd). Free Software initial promises were to empower individuals when it came to computing. Three decades later, computing practices are tightly coupled to the Internet ecosystem. PCs are less and less used while smartphones are soaring and data is collected and stored on servers on which we have very limited control as users. What happened to user's freedom and privacy in the meantime? The outlook is not so great: we have less and less control over our digital environment. Network neutrality is heavily attacked and mainstream software products are usually proprietary or run on servers we don't have control over. Modern technology has given the powerful new abilities to eavesdrop and collect data on people - with critical social and political consequences. FOSDEM is a Free Software event that offers free software communities a place to meet, share ideas and collaborate. It is renown for being highly developer oriented and brings together 8000+ participants from all over the world. It is held in the city of Brussels (Belgium). In 2019, FOSDEM will take place during the weekend of February 2nd-3rd 2019. More details about the event can be found at http://fosdem.org/. On Saturday, February 2nd, the Decentralized Internet & Privacy devroom will be a place for development teams to present the state of their project and future directions, answer questions from the audience and followup in the hacking rooms nearby afterwards. Call For Participation ====================== There is a bright future ahead of us if we unite our efforts toward decentralized services and Surveillance Self-Defense. This devroom welcomes all technical projects and initiatives, to share their progress and inspire others. Presentation topics could include: Technologies and initiatives focused on decentralization - Community-driven networks - Community based around self-hosting or local hosting - Self-hosting solutions - Ethical hosting providers / alternatives to GAFAM (Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, and Microsoft) - Decentralized / federated network protocols and platforms - Decentralized / distributed instant messaging, file sharing and content storage Technologies and initiatives focused on privacy - Anonymous overlay networks - Whistleblower platforms - Privacy oriented Operating Systems - Infrastructure supporting anonymous browsing - Operational security: how to minimize the amount of information someone can collect about you online and on the streets - Basic threat modeling: what sort of paranoia do you realistically need to have? - Steps to minimize damage in the event of a breach Talks are expected to be technical because that’s what the FOSDEM audience expects. FOSDEM is highly technical, but it's not enough to be technical, it's also important to take care of the world we live in. Free software is exactly this kind of technologies that enable cooperation among people, not just technicians. Free software hackers have a responsibility towards their peers and neighbors to help build a world where digital technologies are not only an enemy of the people, but serve citizens' interests, not just corporate interests. Therefore we invite you to step up with organizational sessions and topics that you care about related to free technologies and the role free software and decentralization can take with regard to how technologies are produced, distributed, and governed. Practical informations for submission ===================================== Expected format for the talks ----------------------------- Suggested talk length is 20 minutes and 10 minutes for questions. How to submit a proposal? ------------------------- Go to the dedicated FOSDEM site to submit your proposal: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM19 and follow carefully the instructions. Important: create a Pentabarf account OR reuse your account from previous years if you already have one. Submission deadline ------------------- Deadline for submission will be 26 Nov midnight CET. Announcement of the final schedule will be on 15 Dec 2018: Talk proposals will be reviewed by a steering committee: - Loïc Dachary (Enough // Artisan Logiciel Libre) - Nathalie Rosenberg (UX designer) - Simon Descarpentries (Acoeuro // Artisan Logiciel Libre) - hellekin (Petites Singularités // Artisan Logiciel Libre) Date and location ================= Decentralized Internet & Privacy will take place all day long on 2 Feb 2018 (Saturday). The room is to be confirmed (Solbosch campus - Université Libre Brussels, Brussels, Belgium) Recording of talks ================== The FOSDEM organizers plan to have live streaming and recording fully working, both for remote/later viewing of talks, and so that people can watch streams in the hallways when rooms are full. This requires speakers to consent to being recorded and streamed. If you plan to be a speaker, please understand that by doing so you implicitly give consent for your talk to be recorded and streamed. The recordings will be published under the same license as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY).

FOSDEM 2019 Minimalistic Languages Devroom CFP
by pjotr.public997＠thebird.nl 16 Oct '18

16 Oct '18

* Minimalistic Languages Devroom call for talks @FOSDEM 2019 (posted at https://libreplanet.org/wiki/FOSDEM2019-devroom-minimalism) We are excited to announce a devroom on minimalistic languages (with big ideas) at FOSDEM on Saturday February 2nd 2019! FOSDEM is one of the most important free software conferences and is hosted annually at Université libre de Bruxelles in Brussels, Belgium. FOSDEM is fantastic, check last year's schedule for Saturday (https://archive.fosdem.org/2018/schedule/day/saturday/) Minimalism matters. Minimalism allows for smaller systems that take less resources and consume less energy. More importantly, free and open source minimalism allows for secure systems that are easy to understand. Finally, we believe that minimalism is educational and brings back the fun of the early days of computing where people learn to understand systems from the ground up. Speakers will be asked to accentuate the educational side of their projects. We have a room Saturday 2 February 2019. We want to invite you to submit a talk on the use of minimalistic languages that fits that description. We are especially happy to receive talk submissions from members of any underrepresented groups. If you have something you’d like to share with your fellow developers, please head to pentabarf at - https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM19 The deadline for submission is November 25th. If you have a FOSDEM pentabarf account from a previous year, please use that account. Otherwise add one on https://penta.fosdem.org/user/new_account. Reach out to pjotr.public456(a)thebird.nl if you run into any trouble. When submitting your talk make doubly sure to select "Minimalistic Languages devroom" as track (if you don't we won't find it), and include the following information: * The title and subtitle of your talk * A short abstract of one paragraph * A longer description if you wish to do so * Links to related websites/blogs etc Let's make this a fun day! ** Organisers Pjotr Prins, Manolis Ragkousis, Hisham Muhammad, Ricardo Wurmus, Ludovic Courtès, Jan Nieuwenhuizen, Alex Sassmannshausen and Amirouche Boubekki ** Code of conduct - https://fosdem.org/2019/practical/conduct/ ** Original proposal - https://libreplanet.org/wiki/FOSDEM2019-devroom-proposal ** Important dates: - Nov 25th 2018: submission deadline for talk proposals - Dec 17th 2018: announcement of the final schedule - Feb 2nd 2019: FOSDEM!

The devroom is currently looking for content in the form of talks and activities related to the area of microkernel-, unikernel-, and componenent-based operating systems. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: * introduction of a specific OS or framework * design of subsystems and the general architecture of an OS * enabling support for hardware (architectures, device drivers) * used languages and tools * maintenance and testing * security and robustness * trends and challenges * use cases, experiences, lessons learned and demos Please use the Pentabarf [3] system to submit your proposals. You do not need to create a new account if you already have one. When in doubt, please use the devroom mailing list [4]. If you do not want to give a talk yourself, you may still send suggestions for what else you would like to see, or do in the devroom. Please send your suggestions to the mailing list. The deadline for your proposal is on December the 1st 2018. Make sure to include the following in your proposal: * title of your talk (will be printed in the FOSDEM booklet) * your full name (will be printed in the FOSDEM booklet) * a short abstract (one or two paragraphs) * duration of your talk (please, at least 25 and no longer than 55 min) The official devroom schedule (along with the accepted talks) will be announced on December the 15th on the devroom's mailing list and the speakers will be notified via e-mail. The schedule will also be published on the FOSDEM website. About FOSDEM FOSDEM is a two-day event organised by volunteers to promote the widespread use of free and open source software. Taking place in the beautiful city of Brussels (Belgium), FOSDEM is widely recognised as the best such conference in Europe. FOSDEM covers a wide spectrum of free and open source software projects, and offers a platform for people to collaborate. To this end, FOSDEM has set up developer rooms (devrooms) with network/internet connectivity and projectors where teams can meet and showcase their projects. Devrooms are a place for teams to discuss, hack and publicly present latest directions, lightning talks, news and discussions. Besides developer rooms, FOSDEM also offers main tracks, lightning talks, certification exams and project stands. Every year, FOSDEM hosts more than 5000 developers at the ULB Solbosch campus. Participation and attendance is totally free, though the organisers gratefully accept donations and sponsorship. No registration necessary. About the devroom Since the first Microkernel devroom in 2012 this devroom has been part of each following FOSDEM. By now it has become a somewhat institutionalized tradition for the micro kernel community to meet there; to this date over a dozen projects have participated in one way or another. Each of the projects face similar challenges but come up with partially different solutions. Therefore, the goal of the Microkernel devroom is to bring the various projects together, let them exchange ideas, cross-pollinate and socialize. Social events It also has become a habit that the microkernel projects dine together somewhere in Brussels. The year 2019 will not be any different, so there is going to be a microkernel family dinner on Saturday night. We try place a reservation, so we will inform you about the exact location and time later. Consult the FOSDEM web and other projects for additional social events such as the famous FOSDEM-organized Friday Beer Event and the FOSDEM-arranged free sightseeing tours for spouses. Important dates recap * 01.12.2018: Deadline for submissions * 15.12.2018: Schedule published and speakers notified of acceptance * 03.02.2019: The devroom takes places Links [1] http://fosdem.org [2] https://fosdem.org/2019/practical/transportation [3] https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM19 [4] https://lists.fosdem.org/listinfo/microkernel-devroom See you all at FOSDEM!

We are excited to announce that the call for proposals is now open for the Virtualization & IaaS devroom at the upcoming FOSDEM 2019, to be hosted on February 2nd 2019. This year will mark FOSDEM’s 19th anniversary as one of the longest-running free and open source software developer events, attracting thousands of developers and users from all over the world. FOSDEM will be held once again in Brussels, Belgium, on February 2nd & 3rd, 2019. This devroom is a collaborative effort, and is organized by dedicated folks from projects such as OpenStack, Xen Project, oVirt, QEMU, KVM, and Foreman. We would like to invite all those who are involved in these fields to submit your proposals by December 1st, 2018. About the Devroom The Virtualization & IaaS devroom will feature session topics such as open source hypervisors and virtual machine managers such as Xen Project, KVM, bhyve, and VirtualBox, and Infrastructure-as-a-Service projects such as KubeVirt, Apache CloudStack, OpenStack, oVirt, QEMU and OpenNebula. This devroom will host presentations that focus on topics of shared interest, such as KVM; libvirt; shared storage; virtualized networking; cloud security; clustering and high availability; interfacing with multiple hypervisors; hyperconverged deployments; and scaling across hundreds or thousands of servers. Presentations in this devroom will be aimed at developers working on these platforms who are looking to collaborate and improve shared infrastructure or solve common problems. We seek topics that encourage dialog between projects and continued work post-FOSDEM. Important Dates Submission deadline: 1 December 2019 Acceptance notifications: 14 December 2019 Final schedule announcement: 21 December 2019 Devroom: 2nd February 2019 Submit Your Proposal All submissions must be made via the Pentabarf event planning site[1]. If you have not used Pentabarf before, you will need to create an account. If you submitted proposals for FOSDEM in previous years, you can use your existing account. After creating the account, select Create Event to start the submission process. Make sure to select Virtualization and IaaS devroom from the Track list. Please fill out all the required fields, and provide a meaningful abstract and description of your proposed session. Submission Guidelines We expect more proposals than we can possibly accept, so it is vitally important that you submit your proposal on or before the deadline. Late submissions are unlikely to be considered. All presentation slots are 30 minutes, with 20 minutes planned for presentations, and 10 minutes for Q&A. All presentations will be recorded and made available under Creative Commons licenses. In the Submission notes field, please indicate that you agree that your presentation will be licensed under the CC-By-SA-4.0 or CC-By-4.0 license and that you agree to have your presentation recorded. For example: "If my presentation is accepted for FOSDEM, I hereby agree to license all recordings, slides, and other associated materials under the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 4.0 International License. Sincerely, <NAME>." In the Submission notes field, please also confirm that if your talk is accepted, you will be able to attend FOSDEM and deliver your presentation. We will not consider proposals from prospective speakers who are unsure whether they will be able to secure funds for travel and lodging to attend FOSDEM. (Sadly, we are not able to offer travel funding for prospective speakers.) Speaker Mentoring Program As a part of the rising efforts to grow our communities and encourage a diverse and inclusive conference ecosystem, we're happy to announce that we'll be offering mentoring for new speakers. Our mentors can help you with tasks such as reviewing your abstract, reviewing your presentation outline or slides, or practicing your talk with you. You may apply to the mentoring program as a newcomer speaker if you: Never presented before or Presented only lightning talks or Presented full-length talks at small meetups (<50 ppl) Submission Guidelines Mentored presentations will have 25-minute slots, where 20 minutes will include the presentation and 5 minutes will be reserved for questions. The number of newcomer session slots is limited, so we will probably not be able to accept all applications. You must submit your talk and abstract to apply for the mentoring program, our mentors are volunteering their time and will happily provide feedback but won't write your presentation for you! If you are experiencing problems with Pentabarf, the proposal submission interface, or have other questions, you can email our devroom mailing list[2] and we will try to help you. How to Apply In addition to agreeing to video recording and confirming that you can attend FOSDEM in case your session is accepted, please write "speaker mentoring program application" in the "Submission notes" field, and list any prior speaking experience or other relevant information for your application. Call for Mentors Interested in mentoring newcomer speakers? We'd love to have your help! Please email iaas-virt-devroom at lists.fosdem.org with a short speaker biography and any specific fields of expertise (for example, KVM, OpenStack, storage, etc.) so that we can match you with a newcomer speaker from a similar field. Estimated time investment can be as low as a 5-10 hours in total, usually distributed weekly or bi-weekly. Never mentored a newcomer speaker but interested to try? As the mentoring program coordinator, email Brian Proffitt[3] and he will be happy to answer your questions! Code of Conduct Following the release of the updated code of conduct for FOSDEM, we'd like to remind all speakers and attendees that all of the presentations and discussions in our devroom are held under the guidelines set in the CoC and we expect attendees, speakers, and volunteers to follow the CoC at all times. If you submit a proposal and it is accepted, you will be required to confirm that you accept the FOSDEM CoC. If you have any questions about the CoC or wish to have one of the devroom organizers review your presentation slides or any other content for CoC compliance, please email us and we will do our best to assist you. Call for Volunteers We are also looking for volunteers to help run the devroom. We need assistance watching time for the speakers, and helping with video for the devroom. Please contact Brian Proffitt, for more information. Questions? If you have any questions about this devroom, please send your questions to our devroom mailing list.
