FOSDEM'19 HPC, Big Data, and Data Science Devroom Call for Participation
by Kenneth Hoste 15 Oct '18

15 Oct '18

FOSDEM'19 HPC, Big Data, and Data Science Devroom Call for Participation Sunday, February 3rd, 2019, Brussels, Belgium https://hpc-bigdata-fosdem19.github.io/ # Overview We are proud to announce the 4th edition of the HPC, Big Data and Data Science devroom, co-located with FOSDEM 2019. FOSDEM is an annual conference about free and open source software, attended by over 5000 developers and open-source enthusiasts from all over the world. This devroom is organised by representatives from the HPC and Big Data communities, who are joining forces to bring both communities together. High Performance Computing (HPC) and Big Data are two important approaches to scientific computing. HPC typically deals with smaller, highly structured data sets and huge amounts of computation while Big Data, not surprisingly, deals with gigantic, unstructured data sets and focuses on the I/O bottlenecks. With the Big Data trend unlocking access to an unprecedented amount of data, Data Science has emerged to tackle the problem of creating processes and approaches to extracting knowledge or insights from these data sets. Machine learning and predictive analytics algorithms have joined the family of more traditional HPC algorithms and are pushing the requirements of cluster and data scalability. Free and Open Source communities have been the foundation of the HPC and Big Data communities for some time. In the HPC community, it should be no surprise that 100% of the Top500 supercomputers in the world run Linux. On the Big Data side, the Hadoop ecosystem has had a tremendous amount of Open Source contributions from a wide range of organizations coming together under the Apache Software Foundation. Our goal is to bring the communities together, share expertise, learn how we can benefit from each other’s work and foster further joint research and collaboration. We welcome talks about Free and Open Source solutions to the challenges presented by large scale computing, data management and data analysis. The devroom will take place on Sunday, February 3rd, 2019, at ULB (Campus Solbosch), in Brussels, Belgium. Join us to enjoy a full day of talks, demos and interesting discussions on open-source HPC, Big Data and Data Science. Sounds interesting? Submit your talk proposal below and see you in Brussels! # Topics Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: Architecture and design of High Performance Computing (HPC) and Big Data systems Architecture and design of Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) and data acquisition pipelines Data security and governance Tools and technologies related to HPC and computational science, for example: Multithreading (OpenMP, etc.) Distributed computing (MPI, etc.) GPGPU computing (OpenCL, OpenACC, etc.) Parallel filesystems and storage Large-scale performance analysis and debugging Computational paradigms for Big Data systems MapReduce engines Streaming engines SQL engines Dataflow engines Emerging hardware trends of large scale clusters Large scale memory pooling High-speed interconnects ARM cluster architecture System administration of HPC and Big Data clusters User support tools Machine learning libraries and tools Scientific software applications, tools and libraries (across all scientific domains) Big Data platforms, extensions to existing systems, libraries, APIs Experience reports on using Big Data systems, for example: Large-scale deployments Development and configuration issues Tuning and performance tips and lessons learned Interesting Big Data use-cases and applications Comparative analysis of existing systems, evaluation results, performance studies Interdisciplinary HPC/Big Data use-cases, for example: Applications using both HPC and Big Data technologies Integration issues Open research problems on the convergence of HPC and Big Data Running MPI jobs on Big Data clusters and vice-versa # Submission We invite presenters to submit talk proposals to present high-quality work with sufficient background material to be clear to the HPC, Big Data, and/or Data Science communities. Talk proposals should be submitted through the FOSDEM Pentabarf server. Submissions must include: Abstract Session type Session length Expected prior knowledge / intended audience Speaker bio Links to code / slides / material for the talk (optional) Links to previous talks by the speaker Our intention is to have a full day of talks of about 20 minutes each, with an additional 5 minutes for questions by attendees. We would also like to note: Talks will be streamed live and will be recorded. By submitting a session, speakers agree to being recorded and having their talk made available. All accepted talks will be about (using) free and open source software. We highly discourage “marketing” talks. Submit here: <https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM19> When submitting your talk in Pentabarf, make sure to select the ‘HPC, Big Data, and Data Science Devroom’ as the ‘Track’. If you already have a Pentabarf account from a previous FOSDEM edition, please reuse it. Create an account if, and only if, you don’t have one from a previous year. If you have any issues with Pentabarf, do not despair: contact hpc-bigdata-devroom [at] lists.fosdem.org. # Dates Call for participation available: Wednesday October 10th 2018 Call for participation closes: Friday November 23rd 2018 Devroom schedule available: Monday December 10th 2018 Devroom date: Sunday February 3rd 2019 # Organizers Kenneth Hoste - HPC team at Ghent University Vasia Kalavri - ETH Zürich Roman Shaposhnik Please email hpc-bigdata-devroom(a)lists.fosdem.org with questions or concerns.

by Peter van Dijk 14 Oct '18

14 Oct '18

(posted at https://blog.powerdns.com/2018/10/14/fosdem-2019-dns-devroom-cfp/) Hello DNS enthusiasts and other developers, After a successful and well-filled half day DNS devroom at FOSDEM 2018, we are happy to announce a full day DNS devroom at FOSDEM 2019. As last year, we hope to host talks anywhere from hardcore protocol stuff, to practical sessions for programmers that are not directly involved with DNS but may have to deal with DNS in their day to day coding or system administrators responsible for DNS infrastructure. We have been allotted a room on Sunday 3 February 2019. We expect to schedule 30 minutes per talk, including questions, but if you need more of less time, we can discuss this. If you have something you’d like to share with your fellow developers, please head to pentabarf at https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM19. Examples of topics are measuring, monitoring, DNS libraries, and anecdotes on how you’ve (ab)used the DNS. Here’s the 2018 schedule, for your inspiration: https://archive.fosdem.org/2018/schedule/track/dns/ . The deadline for submission is December 1st. If you have a FOSDEM pentabarf account from a previous year, please use that account. Reach out to dns-devroom-manager(a)fosdem.org if you run into any trouble. See you there! Cheers, Peter van Dijk, Shane Kerr, Pieter Lexis, and Kees Monshouwer

Call for participation
by Gerry Demaret 12 Oct '18

12 Oct '18

We now invite proposals for main track presentations, developer rooms, stands and lightning talks. FOSDEM offers open source and free software developers a place to meet, share ideas and collaborate. Renowned for being highly developer oriented, the event brings together some 8000+ geeks from all over the world. The nineteenth edition will take place on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd February 2019 at the usual location: ULB Campus Solbosch in Brussels. We will record and stream all main tracks, devrooms and lightning talks live. The recordings will be published under the same licence as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY). If, exceptionally, you believe there is a legitimate reason why your presentation should not be streamed or recorded, you must seek our agreement before submitting it. Main Tracks Previous editions have featured main tracks centered around security, operating system development, community building, and many other topics. Presentations are expected to be 50 minutes long (including audience questions) and should cater to a varied technical audience. The conference covers reasonable travel expenses agreed in advance and arranges accommodation for accepted main track speakers if needed. Proposals for main track presentations should be submitted using Pentabarf: https://fosdem.org/submit. If you already created an account in the system for a previous edition, please reuse it rather than re- registering. Submissions will be reviewed in two batches, beginning with those received by 13 October. The final deadline is 3 November. Questions or remarks? Contact us at program(a)fosdem.org. Key dates: 13 October: deadline for first batch of main track proposals 3 November: final deadline for main track proposals 1 November onwards: main track talks announced (in batches) Developer Rooms Developer rooms are assigned to self-organising groups to work together on open source and free software projects, to discuss topics relevant to a broader subset of the community, etc. Most content should take the form of presentations. Proposals involving collaboration across project or domain boundaries are strongly encouraged. Developer room proposals should be submitted through the form at https://fosdem.org/devroom which contains further information. Questions or remarks? Contact us at devrooms(a)fosdem.org. Key dates: 20 September: deadline for developer room proposals 30 September: accepted developer rooms announced 16 October (or earlier): developer rooms issue Calls for Participation 15 December (or earlier): developer rooms publish complete schedules Stands FOSDEM offers open source and free software projects the opportunity to display their work during the event. At its stand, a project can share information, demo software, sell merchandise, give away goodies, and so on, and personally interact with the visitors. What we offer: - one 180x80cm table, positioned in one of the buildings with developer rooms, for the entire duration of the conference. A second table is possible in a few cases, but the pressure on space means this is becoming increasingly rare and needs strong justification. Joint submissions that share a table between related projects will be favoured in the selection process. - two chairs per table - one power socket type C/E (if you require adapters or additional sockets, please bring them yourself) - fast uplink shared wireless Internet access To apply, please fill out the form at: https://fosdem.org/stands which contains further information. Questions or remarks? Contact us at stands(a)fosdem.org. Key dates: 2 November: deadline for stand proposals 11 November: accepted stands announced Lightning talks Lighting talks are short — 15 minute long — talks on a wide variety of topics. Anyone who has something interesting to say about an open source or free software topic can apply. We particularly encourage topics that do not fit in any of the developer rooms. Proposals for lightning talks should be submitted using Pentabarf: https://fosdem.org/submit. Please select "lightning Talks" in the "track" field. If you already created an account in the system for a previous edition, please reuse it rather than re-registering. Questions or remarks? Contact us at lightningtalks(a)fosdem.org. Key dates: 24 November: deadline for lightning talk proposals 15 December: accepted lightning talks announced All deadlines are at 23.59 UTC.
