JavaScript Devroom - Call for Participation
by Ludovic Gasc 22 Oct '18

22 Oct '18

Hi, Good news for all JS enthusiasts! After a few years without JavaScript being present with a dedicated room at FOSDEM, we have secured a dev room for a full day on Sunday 3rd February 2019. We are happy to announce a call for proposal (CfP) to join this room and bring to the table the most. What you definitely need to know about the CfP: * Deadline: 26 November 2018, midnight CET * Announcement of schedule: 15 December * Duration: 20 minutes + 5 minutes for Q&A and 5 minutes light talks * Application via Pentabarf: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM19 * Language: English * Code of conduct: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Fosdem:2017/Code_of_Conduct FOSDEM aims to be a free, open and cooperative event. This means we expect collaboration from all the FOSDEM participants, and for everybody to behave respectfully towards all others, including those that are different or think differently from yourself. Please be helpful, considerate, friendly and respectful towards all other participants and respect the environment. We don't condone harassment or offensive behaviour at our conference. We consider it against our values as human beings. We're voicing our strong, unequivocal support of exemplary behaviour by all participants. If you have previously submitted a proposal for FOSDEM, you will most likely already have a Pentabarf account. If so, the easiest is to reuse it. If not, create a new account and then click on “Create Event” in the menu and use that form to submit your proposal. Make sure to select the “JavaScript devroom” as track, or we will not be able to consider it. Please make sure to include the following items: 1. Title and subtitle of your talk 2. Learning outcome(s) or key takeaways 3. Duration 4. 5 lines abstract of your presentation 5. Full description of your presentation 6. Relevant links to websites, blogs, documentation, and other resources We are open to any topic related to JavaScript but we are mostly interested in topics revolving around: * Core language (ES5, ES6, ES7, closure, scope, etc) * Tooling (Babel, packing, code quality, etc) * SPWAs and frameworks (React, ReactNative, Vue, Angular, shadow DOM, etc) * New domain specific frameworks (machine learning, XR, IoT, etc) * Interaction with other languages (EMScriptem, WASM, etc) * Wildcard, surprise us! Please note that for this year unfortunately we do not offer any kind of funding for the speakers. Please note that all talks will be streamed live, recorded and made available through the FOSDEM archives. By sending in your proposal you agree to these terms. Note that recordings will be published under the same license as all other FOSDEM content (cc-by), however, exceptions can be requested and will be reviewed on a one-one basis. Looking forward to reading your proposals and to make a great dev room together! The JavaScript Dev Room Committee -- Ludovic Gasc (GMLudo)

by Pietro Abate 22 Oct '18

22 Oct '18

Welcome to the 1st edition of the Blockchain devroom at FOSDEM 2019 (https://fosdem.org/2019/) FOSDEM is an annual conference about free and open source software, attended by over 8000s developers and open-source enthusiasts from all over the world. This is an opportunity for all interested in blockchain technology to come together and chat, hack, and share stories about anything related to the blockchain technologies and associated with the FLOSS ecosystems. The devroom will take place on Sunday, 3 February 2019, at [ULB (Campus Solbosch)](https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/1632534522) in Brussels, Belgium. Blockchain technology is an emerging field of research that has already seen many applications in the private and public sector. The most obvious and visible ones are cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin or Ethereum but many others projects ranging from logistics, supply chain management, identity management, code archive use this technology as basic build block to ensure redundancy, security, immutability. Free Software and Open source plays an essential role in the development of blockchains and it is important to attract the attention of developers and researchers. We invite presentations or discussions around (but not limited to) the following topics: - New and emerging blockchain technologies focusing on FOSS, especially focusing on innovation. - New consensus algorithms: moving on From PoW - How Communities develop and thrive in the blockchain world : + how blockchain technology is used to further the ideals and goals of the Free Software and Open Source community. or to the wider social good (social projects using blockchain) + how money and ICOs influence blockchain and FOSS communities. - Blockchain in the public sector. How FOSS blockchains are used by governments and public entities. - Deployment of blockchains : challenges faced by devops - IDE and compilers for Smart Contract Languages - Applications built on smart contract platforms - Desktop and Mobile wallets development - Demystifying the blockchain: + in what kind of applications is a blockchain useful, and when is it not? + other misconceptions - Security and Privacy + will encrypted data still be secure in a few decades? + is blockchain really private or anonymous? + other concerns Please use the Pentabarf [3] system to submit your proposals. You do not need to create a new account if you already have one. When in doubt, please use the devroom mailing list [4]. If you do not want to give a talk yourself, you may still send suggestions for what else you would like to see, or do in the devroom. Please send your suggestions to the mailing list. The deadline for your proposal is on December the 1st 2018. Make sure to include the following in your proposal: * title of your talk (will be printed in the FOSDEM booklet) * your full name (will be printed in the FOSDEM booklet) * a short abstract (one or two paragraphs) * duration of your talk (please, at least 25 and no longer than 40 min) * a short biography The official devroom schedule (along with the accepted talks) will be announced on December the 15th on the devroom's mailing list and the speakers will be notified via e-mail. The schedule will also be published on the FOSDEM website. About FOSDEM FOSDEM is a two-day event organised by volunteers to promote the widespread use of free and open source software. Taking place in the beautiful city of Brussels (Belgium), FOSDEM is widely recognized as the best such conference in Europe. FOSDEM covers a wide spectrum of free and open source software projects, and offers a platform for people to collaborate. To this end, FOSDEM has set up developer rooms (devrooms) with network/internet connectivity and projectors where teams can meet and showcase their projects. Devrooms are a place for teams to discuss, hack and publicly present latest directions, lightning talks, news and discussions. Besides developer rooms, FOSDEM also offers main tracks, lightning talks, certification exams and project stands. Every year, FOSDEM hosts more than 5000 developers at the ULB Solbosch campus. Call for Participation: Community DevRoom at FOSDEM 2019
by Leslie Hawthorn 18 Oct '18

18 Oct '18

Hello everyone, We are happy to let everyone know that the Community DevRoom will be held this year at the FOSDEM Conference. FOSDEM is the premier free and open source software event in Europe, taking place in Brussels from 2-3 February 2019 at the Université libre de Bruxelles. You can learn more about the conference at https://fosdem.org. If you would prefer to read the CFP online, you can do so at *https://medium.com/@leslielauralive/fosdem-2019-community-dev-room-cfp-f60bdc067c22 <https://medium.com/@leslielauralive/fosdem-2019-community-dev-room-cfp-f60b…>* <https://fosdem.org./>== tl;dr == * Community DevRoom takes place on Sunday, 3 February * Submit your papers via the conference abstract submission system, Pentabarf, at https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM19 * Indicate if your session will run for 30 or 45 minutes, including Q&A. If you can do either 30 or 45 minutes, please let us know! * Submission deadline is 23 November 2019 and accepted speakers will be notified by 7 December 2019 * If you need to get in touch with the organizers or program committee of the Community DevRoom, email us at community-devroom(a)lists.fosdem.org. == In more detail == We are happy to let everyone know that the Community DevRoom will be held this year at the FOSDEM Conference. FOSDEM is the premier free and open source software event in Europe, taking place in Brussels from 2-3 February 2019 at the Université libre de Bruxelles. You can learn more about the conference at https://fosdem.org. The Community DevRoom will take place on Sunday, 3 February. The purpose of the devroom is to provide concrete, useful advice on how to best enable contributors to be successful so more FOSS software gets written. == Why This DevRoom == Our goals in running this DevRoom are to: * Connect folks interested in nurturing their communities with one another so they can share knowledge during and long after FOSDEM * Educate those who are primarily software developers on community-oriented topics that are vital in the process of software development, e.g. effective collaboration * Provide concrete advice on dealing with squishy human problems == Talk Topics == We are seeking proposals on all aspects of creating and nurturing communities for free software projects. Please submit a proposal on any topic of your choice, but here are some suggestions to help get your creativity engaged: 1) Balancing corporate and community interests How can you create a healthy and active community while still meeting the needs of your employer? Are their best practice strategies for building community around a corporate backed open source project? How can you maintain an open dialog with your users and/or contributors when you have the need to keep company business confidential? Is it even possible to build an authentic community around a company-based open source project? 2) Compensating volunteers Is this important? How is it done well? Should we discourage people from “working for free”? How much value does open source work have in finding employment? Increasing one’s salary? For one’s professional development? For plain old personal gratification? Has the balance of what people get out of participating in free software projects shifted over time as FOSS has become more mainstream? If there has been a shift, is it good, bad, neutral? 3) Sustainability in FOSS The sheer volume of projects critical to the everyday operation of global computing that are maintained by a handful of humans - or only one - is mind boggling. How can we address the needs of these bus factor prone projects? What is the responsibility for companies who use these projects to allocate resources to maintain them? We are particularly interested to hear about academic research into FOSS Sustainability and/or commercial endeavors set up to address this topic. 4) Career progression for community oriented professionals How do you level up as a community manager? Developer Advocate? What skills do you need to best serveb your community and how do you acquire them? How do we explain what we do all day so people value this work? How do you go about building up a career/job ladder within your company for community managers & developer advocates that isn’t just “go become a manager”? 5) Understand and revitalizing mature communities How do mature communities (re)gather momentum? Is there a time to call a community “done, purpose served”? Is it at the same time as a particular code base around a free software project becomes less popular? What are some of the lessons learned that mature communities can share with newer project communities? Should we really just get off your lawn? 6) Conflict resolution How do we continue working well together when there are conflicts? Is there a difference in how types of conflicts best get resolved, e.g. ”this code is terrible” vs. “we should have a contributor agreement”? We are especially interested in how tos / success stories from projects that have weathered conflict. 7) Ensuring the success of Humanitarian focused FOSS projects When a project is critical to charitable, humanitarian or medical work, how can its survival be ensured, downstream and upstream? How can charities and researchers be resilient to key projects dying, or letting vulnerabilities linger? What organizations are working to address these issues? We are particularly interested in success stories or lessons learned from Humanitarian focused projects. Again, these are just suggestions. We welcome proposals on any aspect of community building! == Preparing Your Submission & Deadlines == === Length of Presentation === We are looking for talk submissions between 30 and 45 minutes in length, including time for Q&A. In general, we are hoping to accept as many talks as possible so we would really appreciate it if you could make all of your remarks in 30 minutes - our DevRoom is only a single day - but if you need longer just let us know. === If you are submitting your proposal to more than one DevRoom == If you plan to submit the same or very similar proposals to more than one DevRoom, please let us know by emailing community-devroom(a)lists.fosdem.org. We are explicitly coordinating with the organizers of the Legal & Policy DevRoom this year to ensure there is not as much overlap between the program in both rooms as there were in years past. If you are submitting a proposal that would work well in the Legal & Policy DevRoom, you may also be interested in submitting to an event running directly after FOSDEM, the 1st Annual International Copyleft Conference. You can find more information here: https://2019.copyleftconf.org/program/call-for-proposals We are not trying to discourage anyone from submitting to the program for either DevRoom or the conference, but we want to ensure that the Community DevRoom has more of a hands-on practitioner focus vs. a policy and procedures focus. If you are not sure where your talk submission would best belong, feel free to email us. We will be happy to help! === Anything Extra You Would Like Us to Know === Beyond giving us your speaker bio and paper abstract, make sure to let us know anything else you’d like to as part of your submission. Some folks like to share their Twitter handles, others like to make sure we can take a look at their GitHub activity history - whatever works for you. We especially welcome videos of you speaking elsewhere, or even just a list of talks you have done previously. First time speakers are, of course, welcome! === Submission Instructions === Submit your talk abstract(s) via FOSDEM’s Pentabarf paper submission system. Pentabarf Submission URL: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM19 == Key Dates == * CFP opens 18 October 2018 * Proposals due in Pentabarf 23 November 2018 * Speakers notified by 7 December 2018 * DevRoom takes place 3 February 2019 at FOSDEM If you have any questions, please let us know! IoT and embedded...
by pjotr.public445＠thebird.nl 18 Oct '18

18 Oct '18

Now we lack a room for IoT and embedded... Some projects may fit the Minimalistic Languages Devroom (for big ideas): https://libreplanet.org/wiki/FOSDEM2019-devroom-minimalism Embedded systems and IoT projects may well fit if there is a focus on free software and minimalism. We will have Scheme lisps (Guile, Racket), Lua and Mes and hopefully others like shell, Smalltalk and Tcl. Feel free to spread the word. Pj.

End of the embedded devroom (regarding Call for participation)
by Philippe De Swert 18 Oct '18

18 Oct '18

Hi Pierre, and others, On 12/10/2018, Pierre FICHEUX <pierre.ficheux(a)smile.fr> wrote: > Hi all, > > No embedded/automotive/iot devroom, is that real ??? Unfortunately yes. And it is all my fault. This summer has been very busy dealing with sport club stuff and my own competitions/training which caused that I missed completely the early call for participation. By the time I noticed it (early last week), the deadline had passed. Despite the long tradition and my personal connection with FOSDEM in other ways, I did not feel it would be appropriate to pull some strings to see if it could be forced in anyway. It did not feel right compared to other projects/people arranging devrooms through the regular procedure. Otoh I was already thinking to stop with it after last year (as I have been involved in different ways for 16 years), but the plan was rather to make next year the final one for me and organize some hand-over. Well clearly that will not happen now. However anybody who would like to take over has my full support and is free to contact me to ask for help. I thus apologize for any disappointment and that due to me missing the deadline completely there was no chance for anybody else to take over for 2019. BOF rooms are afaik still open and main talks also. A number of devrooms have quite overlapping content also, so there should be room there too to submit talks. Although it is unfortunate the IOT room is not there for 2019 either. So I am sorry for this abrupt end of the embedded room (for now), and offer also a big thank you for everybody who has visited or made a presentation there. Philippe
