FOSDEM 2019: Free Software Radio Devroom CfP
by Martin Braun 11 Oct '18

11 Oct '18

Dear friends and fans of software defined radio and free/open source radio topics in general, next year's FOSDEM (the free and open source developer's meeting in Brussels, Europe) will, once again, feature a track on Software Defined Radio and other radio-related topics. To better capture the broad spectrum (pun intended) of topics, we've chosen the name "Free Software Radio Devroom" to emphasize we're not limited to SDR frameworks. We thus invite developers and users from the free software radio community to join us for this track and present your projects, demos, hacks, and codes. At FOSDEM, we hope to network all these projects and improve collaboration, bring new ideas forward and get more people involved. The track's web site resides at: https://wiki.gnuradio.org/index.php/FOSDEM Here, we will publish updates and announcements. The final schedule will be available through Pentabarf and the official FOSDEM website. ** Submit your presentations To suggest a talk, go to https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM19 and follow the instructions (you need an account, but can use your account from last year if you have one). You need to create an 'Event'; make sure it's in the Free Software Radio track! Lengths aren't fixed, but give a realistic estimate and please don't exceed 30 minutes unless you have something special planned (in that case, contact one of us). Also, don't forget to include time for Q&A. We will typically go for 30-minute slots -- shorter talks, unless they're really short, usually tend to screw up the schedule too much. You aren't limited to slide presentations, of course. Be creative. However, FOSDEM is an open source conference, therefore we ask you to stay clear of marketing presentations and present something relevant to free/open software. We like nitty-gritty technical stuff. Topics discussed in this devroom include: * SDR Frameworks + Tools * Cellular/telecoms software * Free/Open SDR hardware * Wireless security * Random fun wireless hacks * SDR in education * Satellite/spacecraft communication * Ham radio related topics ** Important Dates FOSDEM is February 2nd and 3rd, 2019. * December 7th 2018: Submission Deadline * December 15th 2018: Schedule is finalized. We will announce the detailed agenda shortly after that. The least years we were always full to the brim with presentations, so if you want to present, please make sure to submit your abstracts soon! ** Steering Committee The track committee consists of: * Phil "Crofton" Balister * Martin "mbr0wn" Braun * Sylvain "tnt" Munaut Hope to hear from you soon! And please forward this announcement. Martin

groups missing a booth because of FSFE
by virgilva＠keemail.me 14 Sep '18

14 Sep '18

Greetings FOSDEM people! One group, FSFE always have the biggest booth at FOSDEM. Many volunteer groups rejected every year and FSFE has a booth big enough for 3 groups. Our project never got a booth at FOSDEM. People are talking about FSFE now, not the same group it was before 10 years. A business, staff are de-facto shareholders, censoring community initiative. Many people founded other activist groups now and all deserve equal space. Why are FSFE special then? European? Only 20 people are really FSFE members! Most are from one country, Germany! Best wishes Virgil

A devroom for minimalistic programming languages with big ideas (RFC)
by Pjotr Prins 09 Sep '18

09 Sep '18

Dear all, We would like to propose a devroom for 'Minimalistic or small programming languages with big ideas'. We think these are under represented at FOSDEM and minimalism still very much matters in open source software and computing in general. E.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimalism_(computing) We are posting here to see if anyone else is interested in participating. Currently we have commitments from GNU Mes which is building a FOSS bootstrap from source using a 200-byte binary using a minimalistic C compiler, GNU Guile and Lua: all with big ideas. We would like to add smalltalk and perhaps a few others. Computer languages targeting LLVM, the JVM and JS are perhaps covered by other devrooms. If not, we could look at those too and have them find a place with us. Our current thinking, however, is standalone programming languages. Any feedback on this before we put together our proposal? Pjotr & Manolis

FOSDEM video review interface - feedback needed
by belen barros pena 27 Aug '18

27 Aug '18

Hi all, We've been working on some changes to the video review web interface, the one speakers and devroom coordinators use to check presentation videos before they are published for the world to see. We are eager on getting feedback from FOSDEM attendees, past and future speakers, and devroom coordinators. If you are subscribed to this list, we sure would like to hear from you. Giving feedbak should take about 30 minutes, and involves only a call with screen sharing (using something like Jitsi https://meet.jit.si/ or similar). During the call we will ask you to review a video with the new web interface. As a thank you, we will happily buy you a beer (or any other beverage for that matter) during FOSDEM 2019. If you would like to volunteer for this, please get in touch. Thanks! Belen

Looking to hand off the Testing and Automation devroom for next year
by R. Tyler Croy 23 Aug '18

23 Aug '18

Many of you have no doubt seen Gerry's call for proposals around next year's FOSDEM. I wanted to ask if there was anybody interested in organizing and hosting the Testing and Automation devroom, which has yet to be proposed. The devroom has been loads of fun over the past 5ish years, with *tons* of great content from a diverse array of speakers covering the whole spectrum of testing and quality automation. Jeff and I have some room materials here: https://github.com/fosdem-testingautomation I'm still very very interested in the space, but my personal home obligations are likely going to keep me in the United States this coming January/February, and don't want to commit to coordinating a devroom with my current level of uncertainty. Let me know if you're interested and I'd be happy to walk you through the processes we've gone through in the past. If I don't see y'all there, have a great FOSDEM :) Cheers R Tyler Croy

first edition of the SDR devroom at fosdem ?
by Kristoff 08 Feb '18

08 Feb '18

Hi, A small quesion about the history of FOSDEM. Perhaps somebody can help me. I have been asked to write a rapport on the infobooth we had at FOSDEM 2018. I'm now gathering background some more background information on FOSDEM itself. Does anybody know when was the the first edition of the SDR devroom at fosdem? The first time I attended FOSDEM and the SDR devroom was (I think) in 2014, but I have no idea how long it already existed. It is correct to say that -at first- FOSDEM was a pure "software" conference, and later grew into more not-pure-software subjects too (SDR, open harware, hardware developer tools, GEOspacial, ..)? I guess this change probably happened gradually but I would be nice to have a rought idea when this happened? Thanks! :-) Kr. Bonne

Some feedback
by Oliver Hoffmann 08 Feb '18

08 Feb '18

Hi all, there could be more information about parking. Especially if you have a camper van or motor home. So some hints. -If you arrive after 22:00 everything will be closed. No way to enter the car park -If you arrive to late during the day it'll be full and closed as well -There are no parking fees down in Av. Uruguay. Thus possible to stay there over night. Tram 94 is close. -Parking and even staying in the car over night is OK for 24h -Old Diesel cars are not allowed in the city but Camper vans/motor homes are -Entering the car park with such a car and "camp" there might raise questions. There was nobody telling me off or something though. Politness and or being a volunteer might help -I have no idea about parking fees. I just saw that you have to pay everywhere close to ULB and then there were other areas where parking was free of charge I know it is next to impossible to solve it but very often the rooms were to full or even closed due to too many people. I missed three or four interesting talks because of that. And yeah, there could be more food trucks! Cheers, Oliver
