CFP: Security / hardware crypto & FOSS
by Martin Paljak 01 Dec '10

01 Dec '10

CFP: Security / hardware crypto AKA "Protect your privates!" FOSDEM 2011 will [1] take place in Brussels, the heart of EU. In 2011, as almost all EU countries have either ongoing rollouts of national eID cards or are planning it, many people will find yet another smartcard in their wallet. Cards that don't contain virtual credit but private keys and certificates that can be used for many purposes in the online world. FOSS has an important role in the overall eID infrastructure, either on the server side inside Apache's mod_ssl, on the client computer inside Firefox as OpenSC PKCS#11 module or hidden in the infrastructure, issuing the certificates from an EJBCA server, which is administered over SSH. Security in the online world matters and one the most common tools for it is cryptography and PKI. The chain is as strong as its weakest link and for PKI, the security of private keys matters. The integrated and widespread nature of PKI implementation makes it difficult to get it perfect, but one must not stop trying. Do you develop software that uses HTTPS protocol? Can it use keys and certificates on a smart card? Does your service use RSA keys for signing? Can it work with hardware keys? Are you interested in protecting your private keys like Three Letter Organizations or do you want to roll your own proper PKI with a smaller than five or six digit budget? How can we make cryptographic hardware Just Work with any application that uses crypto? The devroom is the place to share experiences and learn. This is the call for talks and presentations that will take place in the Security devroom at FOSDEM 2011. Security / hardware crytpo devroom will take place on Saturday, 05.02.2011, in room AW1.105 with 48 seats. The expected audience will range from crypto library developers to desktop GUI creators, from hardware driver makers to business software providers. Two main themes are cross-application (hardware) interoperability and user awareness/education, but if you have anything interesting to share that deals with security or cryptography, don't be bounded by the main topic. Don't be limited with a traditional "presentation and questions" format, hands-on workshop format is also welcome. HOWTO: * Subscribe to security-devroom(a)lists.fosdem.org [2] * Send a short talk description, its duration, your bio/affiliation and contact information to the list and/or add it directly to the OpenSC wiki [3]. * There are 5 up to 1 hour slots (with 10 minutes for Q&A and 5 minutes for organizational time included, so 45 minutes max for a talk) * You don't have to fill the entire slot, 30 minute slots with ~20+5+5 minutes format are also OK * FOSDEM is for FOSS developers, keep this in mind when planning your talk. * The deadline for submissions is 21.12.2010 23:00 UTC * The final schedule for the day will be fixed no later than 04.01.2011 * If there will be more submissions than there are time slots, then * a) you may be asked to jam your presentation into a shorter (20 minutes) format * b) the final list will be fixed by subscribers of security-devroom(a)lists.fosdem.org list I kindly ask you to forward this announcement to any relevant FOSS project mailing list. Perl @ FOSDEM 2011 - Call for speakers
by Gabor Szabo 14 Nov '10

14 Nov '10

sorry I sent this to the wrong address. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Gabor Szabo <szabgab(a)gmail.com> Date: Mon, Nov 8, 2010 at 12:10 AM Subject: Perl @ FOSDEM 2011 - Call for speakers To: devrooms(a)fosdem.org FOSDEM is one of the biggest Free and Open Source event held annually in Brussels, Belgium. The expected number of visitors is around 4-5000. Last year there was a Perl booth and a few Perl related talks. This year we are going to have a devroom where we will be presenting a number of Perl related talks. FOSDEM will take place on the 5 - 6th February 2011. The Perl devroom will be on Sunday 6th February from 09:00 to 17:00.. We're looking for speakers to submit talks for inclusion in the program. In our conversations with the FOSDEM visitors last year we found that while many were using Perl or interested in Perl, almost none of them have ever attended a Perl Workshop or a YAPC. Hence this is an opportunity to show the latest developments in the Perl world to a wider audience. A number of topics that might be interesting: * Moose, the Object Oriented system of Perl * Dancer and Mojolicous, the new light-weight web frameworks * New features of Perl (5.10 and 5.12) * How to run a new version of Perl on an older system * Testing Perl code and using Perl for automated testing * Writing games in Perl * Using Perl modules without root access * Database access using Perl * Data mining with Perl * Porting legacy Perl to Modern Perl * Perl 6 Presenting a Perl based software such s a * Content Management System * Bug tracking software * ... Talks can be 15, 30 or 45 min long including (!) 2-3 minutes switching time between talks. Please submit your proposals to: events(a)lists.perlfoundation.org and include the following information: * Your name * The title of your talk (please be descriptive, as titles will be listed together with ~250 talks from other projects) * A short abstract of one or two paragraphs * A short biography introducing yourself * Links to related websites/blogs etc. The deadline for submissions is 20th December 2010. The proposals will be considered by committee. If your proposal has been accepted, you will be informed by email by 27 December 2010. regards Gabor http://perl-ecosystem.org/

by Florian Effenberger 14 Nov '10

2011: Brussels, FOSDEM... Your first chance ever to give a talk for LibreOffice at this great open source event... obviously you don't want to miss this! Do you want to share your experience in starting to hack the code, or tell about the tweaks in your build environment, talk about the code changes you have done or those that you prepare, or do you want to share insight on your QA work? Simply submit your proposal at our wiki: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Events/Fosdem2011 We really like you to share in the way that fits you best, be it 5, 10 or up to 30 minutes :-) It might well be that we'll have to choose between the various proposals, after all FOSDEM is only two days ;-) So please give a clear description of your talk, goals and target audience. For details, see the outline that is provided at the wiki. FOSDEM is a free conference to attend, and we will try to seek sponsorship. But funding is limited, so please only request it if you cannot attend otherwise, and we will try our best to support you.
