[CFP] Data Analytics DevRoom
by Olivier Grisel 03 Nov '10

03 Nov '10

Call for Presentations: Data Analysis Dev Room, FOSDEM http://fosdem.org - 5 February 2011 - 1pm to 7pm - Brussels, Belgium This is to announce the Data Analysis DevRoom co-located with FOSDEM. The first Meetup on analysing and learning from data, taking place in Brussels, Belgium. Important Dates (all dates in GMT +2): Submission deadline: 2010-12-17 Notification of accepted speakers: 2010-12-20 Publication of final schedule: 2011-01-10 Meetup: 2011-02-05 Data analysis is an increasingly popular topic in the hacker community. This trend is illustrated by declarations such as: ""I keep saying the sexy job in the next ten years will be statisticians. People think I’m joking, but who would’ve guessed that computer engineers would’ve been the sexy job of the 1990s? The ability to take data—to be able to understand it, to process it, to extract value from it, to visualize it, to communicate it—that’s going to be a hugely important skill in the next decades, not only at the professional level but even at the educational level for elementary school kids, for high school kids, for college kids. Because now we really do have essentially free and ubiquitous data. So the complimentary scarce factor is the ability to understand that data and extract value from it."" -- Hal Varian, Google’s chief economist Topics The event will comprise presentations on scalable data processing. We invite you to submit talks on the topics: * Information retrieval / Search * Large Scale data processing * Machine Learning * Text Mining * Computer vision * Linked Open Data Sample list of related open source / data projects (not exhaustive) : * http://lucene.apache.org * http://hadoop.apache.org (including MapReduce, Pig, Hive, ...) * http://www.r-project.org/ * http://scipy.org * http://mahout.apache.org * http://opennlp.sourceforge.net * http://nltk.org * http://opencv.willowgarage.com * http://mloss.org & http://mldata.org * http://dbpedia.org & http://freebase.com Closely related topics not explicitly listed above are welcome. High quality, technical submissions are called for, ranging from principles to practice. We are looking for presentations on the implementation of the systems themselves, real world applications and case studies. Submissions should be based on free software solutions. Submission Proposals should be submitted at fosdem.datadevroom(a)gmail.com no later than 2010-12-17. Acceptance notifications will be sent out on 2010-12-20. Please include your name, bio and email, the title of the talk, a brief abstract in English language. Please indicate the level of experience with the topic your audience should have (e.g. whether your talk will be suitable for newbies or is targeted for experienced users.) The presentation format is short: 30 minutes including questions. We will be enforcing the schedule rigorously. Sponsoring If you are interested in sponsoring the event (e.g. we would be happy to provide videos after the event, free drinks for attendees as well as an after-show party), please contact us. Note: "DataDevRoom sponsors" will not be endorsed as "FOSDEM sponsors" and hence not listed in the sponsors section on the fosdem.org website. Call for papers for the "MySQL & Friends" developer room
by Lenz Grimmer 03 Nov '10

03 Nov '10

Hi, I sent out a call for submissions for our DevRoom yesterday - your help in spreading the word would be appreciated! http://lenzg.net/archives/319-Call-for-Papers-MySQL-and-Friends-Developer-R… [SNIP] It's that time of the year again — the nice folks at FOSDEM have granted us a developer room at their upcoming conference (February 5+6 2011 in Brussels, Belgium)! As usual there were more applications than they were able to accommodate, so we are very grateful for this opportunity for collaboration. Titled "MySQL and Friends", our room next year will be H.2213 with a capacity of 100 seats. It will be at our disposal on Saturday 5th, from 13:00 till 19:00. Like last year, we would like to set up a schedule of talks related to the MySQL server and the various projects that surround it. Each talk will last 20 minutes, plus 5 minutes of Q&A and a 5 minute break for switching speakers, giving us 12 slots in total to fill with excellent tech talks. Take a look at this year's schedule (http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/FOSDEM_2010_Developer_Room) for some examples! I hope we can assemble an even more exciting and interesting schedule for next year. Quoting from my last year's call for papers (http://blogs.sun.com/MySQL/entry/call_for_papers_for_mysql) We are looking for covering a wide range of topics that attract both MySQL DBAs as well as application developers that work with MySQL as their database of choice. Are you developing a new storage engine or other plugin? Do you want to share your experiences and best practices in administering or deploying MySQL servers? Did you develop a new method to scale a MySQL setup? Let us and the audience know about it! You can submit your talk proposal via this submission form: https://spreadsheets2.google.com/viewform?formkey=dC0zWWtJcmowWHFSbGUyLTk3b… The deadline for turning in your proposal is Sunday, 26th of December, 2010, after which there will be a voting and rating period to identify the most interesting and attractive topics. Please check the FOSDEM 2011 information page on the MySQL Forge Wiki (http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/FOSDEM_2011) for more details and don't hesitate to contact me directly, if you have any questions or suggestions. I look forward to your proposals! [SNIP] Lenz -- Lenz Grimmer | MySQL Community Relations Specialist EMEA Phone: +49 40 41267308 | Mobile: +49 172 7106443 ORACLE Deutschland B.V. & Co. accepted devrooms
by Mattias 'Tias' Guns 03 Nov '10

03 Nov '10

Below you can find the list of accepted devrooms, also on http://fosdem.org/2011/news/accepted-devrooms We were very pleased with the devroom proposals we received, as many were collaborative proposals with ample opportunity for cross-pollination between projects. As a side effect, this did make the decision process even harder. We asked the devroom organizers to send a copy of their call for papers to this mailinglist, and in the near future we will collect the different calls on our website. Following devroom requests were accepted, and will have a room of varying size on Saturday or Sunday: * Accessibility The goal is to talk about and focus on accessibility across multiple distinct technologies and open source projects. * BSD The most notable Berkeley Software Distributions are perhaps the major open source BSDs (FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, DragonFly BSD) which have themselves spawned a number of children. FreeBSD-kernel is also used in Linux projects like Debian GNU/kFreeBSD. * Configuration/Systems Management Mini-talks from real world case studies, brainstorming and hacking around configuration and systems management from complex virtual environments and cloud computing to desktops and laptops. * Crossdesktop The "CrossDesktop" developer room is a collaboration across KDE, GNOME and XFCE to host talks about common topics, freedesktop.org as well as interoperability. * Data Analytics Open Source tools for Data Analytics. This includes Machine Learning, Text Mining and Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision, Recommender Engines, Visualisation, Data Mining, Large Scale and distributed data processing, etc. * Distribution Miniconf As last year, the idea is that rather than having several distributions with their own respective and individual Developer Room, we will host mixed conference rooms where talks and sessions will be organized by topic, with contributors from all distributions attending and participating. * Embedded Focus on working with embedded systems, cross-compiling, low memory footprints and all that is related to running open-source software on low power or mobile devices. * Free Java With JDK 7 due to make an appearance, our goal is to provide a venue for the developers and users of the Free Java projects to collaborate and discuss on a range of topics from virtual machines through to deployment on FOSS operating systems. * GNU The goal is to promote discussion on the advancement of the GNU coding standards and maintainers guidelines as well as the packages implementing them, and strengthen the community of maintainers and developers. * Jabber/XMPP The Jabber/XMPP devroom brings together developers of XMPP-using applications. The room will be used for presentations and tutorials on the protocol itself as well as specific projects, hacking on XMPP projects and protocol development discussions. * LibreOffice Our goals is to present ourselves and collaborate on development topics, introduce the idea of the Foundation and make one more important step towards open and transparent processes. * Mono Mono is a software platform designed to allow developers to easily create cross platform applications. We feel that by embracing the successful, standardized .NET software platform, we can lower the barriers to producing great applications for Linux. * Mozilla Contributors and staff of the Mozilla Project will give presentations and lead discussions on different areas of the project, notably, the latest version of Firefox, hacks.mozilla.org, HTML5 demos, Jetpack Development, SeaMonkey etc... * MySQL & friends Talks and discussions related to the MySQL Server Ecosystem. We'd like to cover sessions about best practices (e.g. performance tuning, scaling, high availability) as well as introductions into related technologies and projects. * New challenges in Virtualization There are several projects related to virtualization and the many open problems it poses. This devroom aims to be a meeting point where developers of these projects can meet to reinforce their cooperation. * Open Source Telephony The purpose of this devroom is promote cross pollination between projects in the telephony space. There are a good number of open source telephony projects out there and their goals may differ, but they all have certain values in mind, such as standards and interoperability. * Perl We are going to organize presentations and hacking sessions on a number of Perl related open source projects such as Dancer, Mojolicious, Rakudo and Padre, as well as other Perl related projects such as Perl DBI and MongoDB. * PostgreSQL FOSDEM is the second most important conference for the European PostgreSQL community (after our own PGDay). The majority of talks will be developer talks, use cases, and PostgreSQL related applications are also welcomed. * Security / hardware crypto The goal is to to raise the awareness of OpenSC and smart cards in general. The room targets both "core" PKI related software people, who work on libraries other developers use, and developers of any software supporting private keys. * World of GNUstep The goal is to teach interested developers how to write cross platform applications or port Cocoa applications to Linux, BSD and Windows using GNUstep; share news about the latest development and plans on GNUstep; code sprints, hacking, discussing... Call for talks for the FOSDEM 2011 distributions miniconference
by Wouter Verhelst 03 Nov '10

03 Nov '10

Hi, [a somewhat informal call for talks has preceded this one; this CfT does not change anything that was said there, but does add some information] This is the official call for talks for the FOSDEM 2011 distribution miniconference. Talks for this miniconference should have a subject matter that is relevant for distribution developers; for example, they could be about methods for packaging software, the organization and workflow of distributions, configuration management systems as relevant to distribution maintainers, etc. An affiliation with a specific distribution is not a requirement for a speaker. As was the case last year, during the coming edition the cross-distribution developer's room will have two rooms for two days. Interested speakers should send a proposal to the dist2011(a)lists.fosdem.org mailinglist. A proposal must include: - The title of the talk, - A short abstract, - The name of the speaker, - A short bio of the speaker And this no later than january 1st, 2011. Note that a paper is not a requirement. If there are more proposals than available time slots, talks will be alotted after discussion among representatives of the various distributions on the dist2011 mailinglist. Distributions are kindly invited to forward this call for talks to their relevant mailinglists. Additionally, we would welcome if distributions who will participate in the miniconference will let their intentions known on the mailinglist, so we can announce that at the proper time.
