by Louis Suárez-Potts 25 Dec '10

25 Dec '10

Hi All, **Call for talks for the accessibility DevRoom at fosdem 2011** — http://fosdem.org/2011/ – 6 February 2011, 09:00 to 17:00, Brussels, Belgium — We will be holding an Accessibility DevRoom at fosdem 2011 [0] and are requesting abstracts for structured presentations now. Important information, dates: • Submission deadline for abstracts: 2010-12-31 • Notification of accepted speakers: 2011-01-10 • Final schedule: 2011-01-12 • Get together: 2011-02-05 **About this DevRoom** Designing software so that it is accessible to and usable by people with disabilities has been a significant theme in software user interface development over the last few decades. Recent national and supra-national regulations, laws, and treaties - such as the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities - have only emphasized this work. There have been numerous significant accessibility achievements in Free/Libre and Open Source Software. These include work in accessibility frameworks and user interface toolkits, in accessible applications, in developer and authoring tools, and in the development and use of assistive technologies by people with disabilities. The focus of this DevRoom is to both demonstrate the breadth and scope of accessibility technologies in open source software, and to provide developers with the opportunity to collaborate - across desktops and applications and assistive technologies. We invite you to submit talks on these topics: • Inclusive design: state of the art • Specific problems in mobile devices • Document accessibility • Assistive Technologies & building blocks for same • Accessibility in user interface toolkits (Qt, JavaScript UI libraries, …) • Accessibility support in developer tools ** Your submission must include:** * Your name * The title of your talk * A short abstract of one to two paragraphs (150 words, max.) * A short biography * Links to related websites/blogs etc. * * * Send the abstracts (and ultimately presentations) to: accessibility-devroom(a)lists.fosdem.org * * * (For now, it's a moderated list and at this point, mostly a bucket for submissions. if there is sufficient interest, all that will change, or we can add more lists, if that's needed. ) Presentations are to be formal and not longer than 45 minutes, plus 15 extra for questions. Panels with more than one speaker are possible, as are shorter presentations of 20 minutes, though the preference is for the longer format. Indeed, it's entirely possible that there will be some creative compromises…. The deadline for submissions is 31 December 2010. The proposals will be considered by a committee of peers. If your proposal has been accepted, you will be informed by email by 10 January 2011. Please be so kind as to forward this call for abstracts and papers to any and all relevant lists, sites, people. We hope to see you at fosdem 2011! - Louis Suarez-Potts OpenOffice.org Oracle [0] http://fosdem.org/2011/ [1] http://lists.fosdem.org/mailman/listinfo/accessibility-devroom

Certification schedule published
by Philip Paeps 16 Dec '10

16 Dec '10

We're happy to announce that there will again be an opportunity to take certification exams at FOSDEM 2011. This year, the Linux Professional Institute, the BSD Certification Group and Typo3 will be offering their respective exams. Information is available here: http://fosdem.org/2011/certification The schedule is here: http://fosdem.org/2011/schedule/tracks/certification Note: I'm aware that the pointers on the second page point to the 2010 schedule. I have it on good authority that "the right thing" will happen to them once the rest of the schedule for 2011 goes out[0]. Please sign up for exam sessions with the respective certification groups sooner rather than later as space is limited. In the case of BSDCA, exam papers also need to travel across an ocean and it helps to know to within a reasonable epsilon how many papers need to be shipped. - Philip [0] In other words, you may want to copy the relevant information down on a piece of paper. Who knows what our content damagement thing feels "the right thing" is. Might involve fireworks. Call me a skeptic. -- Philip Paeps Please don't Cc me, I am philip(a)fosdem.org subscribed to the list.

Have Main Track Speakers been notified?
by Tom Marble 11 Dec '10

11 Dec '10

Organizers: According to [0] the acceptance of main tracks was on 23 Oct. I'm wondering if, indeed, that was completed... And, if so, if even speakers that were not accepted were also notified? I think everyone is impatient to make travel plans! Regards, --Tom [0] http://fosdem.org/2011/call_for_main_speakers

FOSDEM DevRoom speakers wanted
by Florian Effenberger 08 Dec '10

08 Dec '10

Hello, LibreOffice has its own DevRoom at this years' FOSDEM in Brussels. Our Call for Papers is still open. :-) Do you want to share your experience in starting to hack the code, or tell about the tweaks in your build environment, talk about the code changes you have done or those that you prepare, or do you want to share insight on your QA work? Or what you have plan to do for translation or infrastructure? Simply submit your proposal at this page. We really like you to share in the way that fits you best, be it 5, 10 or up to 30 minutes :-) It might well be that we'll have to choose between the various proposals, after all FOSDEM is only two days ;-) So please give a clear description of your talk, goals and target audience. For details, see the outline that is provided at the wiki. Details at: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Events/Fosdem2011 Florian -- Florian Effenberger <floeff(a)documentfoundation.org> Steering Committee and Founding Member of The Document Foundation Tel: +49 8341 99660880 | Mobile: +49 151 14424108 Skype: floeff | Twitter/Identi.ca: @floeff

Embedded devroom canceled?
by Carl-Daniel Hailfinger 06 Dec '10

06 Dec '10

Hi, I noticed that there is no CFP (yet?) for the Embedded devroom according to http://www.fosdem.org/2011/call_for_participation . We (coreboot/flashrom) would like to participate in the Embedded devroom, but if that devroom is not going to happen, we will have to apply for a stand and that deadline is pretty soon. Regards, Carl-Daniel

Participation, update
by Mattias 'Tias' Guns 06 Dec '10

06 Dec '10

The call for stands officially ends tomorrow, Monday the 6th of December. The submission form will remain open for about a day and a half, so this is your last chance to propose manning a stand at FOSDEM [1]. The call for lightning talks is extended till Sunday 19th of December [2]. This is to allow projects that can not get a stand at FOSDEM to apply for a lightning talk. It also spreads the load of the review commission a bit more evenly. Note that most devroom calls also have a deadline in the last two weeks of December, so there is still plenty of opportunity to participate in FOSDEM by speaking about your favorite open source project! See the list of devrooms at FOSDEM 2011 [3]. Kind regards, The FOSDEM Organizers [1] http://fosdem.org/2011/call_for_stands [2] http://fosdem.org/2011/call_for_lightningtalks [3] http://fosdem.org/2011/call_for_participation
