News : Participating stands
by info＠fosdem.org 13 Jan '10

13 Jan '10

The stands have been decided since a long time, but we had not yet published the list on our website. In total 31 projects were selected, you can find a list of them in schedule [1]. *Update:* we forgot to list RepRap [2]! The keynote talks are already in the schedule too, as well as most of the main track talks. We are still making final arrangements, so the timing is missing for some of them. In the coming days and weeks, the schedule will grow to include the devroom and lightning talks. For more information, or to fill in the form check out: http://fosdem.org/2010/news/participating-stands [1] http://fosdem.org/2010/stands [2] http://reprap.org/bin/view/Main/WebHome

News : Call for volunteers
by info＠fosdem.org 13 Jan '10

13 Jan '10

FOSDEM 2010: nearly there... And you can help us make it a success again. Visitors of previous editions will probably have noticed our enthusiastic team of weekend volunteers who help us bend the chaos into order. Feel like helping out this year? Here's your chance: don't be shy and just sign up [1]! Tasks that require your help include, but are not limited to: * Setting up the venue * Manning the infodesk * Handling the donations * Translating for our foreign guests * Handling taxis for speakers * Moderating the main tracks and the lightning talks * Cleaning up after the event * ... Think this sounds like fun? So did our previous volunteers, some of which you'll meet again this year. So wait no longer and mail us at volunteers(a)fosdem.org [2], and become part of the team now! All help is appreciated, even if it's just a couple of hours in between talks. Helping hands are especially welcome on Friday from 9am onwards. If you're in the neighborhood, just come to the venue [3], we'll need you! PS: It speaks for itself that we wouldn't want our Friday volunteers to miss the beer event, so after we wrap up we're all going together. See you at FOSDEM! For more information, or to fill in the form check out: http://fosdem.org/2010/news/call-volunteers [1] mailto:volunteers@fosdem.org [2] mailto:volunteers@fosdem.org [3] http://fosdem.org/2010/practical/transportation

Women - roomshare
by Sumana Harihareswara 13 Jan '10

13 Jan '10

Are there any women going to FOSDEM 2010 who could spare space on their hotel room floor, or want to share a room with another woman (me)? I'd prefer staying in or near the Renaissance Hotel, near the Brussels-Luxembourg railway station, because that's where my colleagues will be. http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/brubr-renaissance-brussels-hotel/ I plan on arriving Thursday night or Friday morning and leaving Monday the 8th. Please email me offlist to coordinate. Best, Sumana Harihareswara http://brainwane.net P.S. I didn't see any women posting about FOSDEM 2010 in the Couchsurfing group at http://www.couchsurfing.org/group.html?gid=16380 but that might be a good place to coordinate roomshares in general.

Hi, I would like to know if FOSDEM is right for me. I'm student of Warsaw University of technology(2nd year) and I'm just a beginner in Free and Open Source world as in whole Computer Science. I know something. But comparing it to your knowledge and experience I'm a tiny mouse. I'm interested in Web Developing, Linux related and Projects Management. Best Regards, Maciej Rumianowski

Help Stop EU Software Patents – Again
by Richard Ibbotson 10 Jan '10

10 Jan '10

Hi I don't know if this is suitable for this list. However, there have been times in the past when we have discussed software patents at Fosdem.... http://www.computerworlduk.com/toolbox/open- source/blogs/index.cfm?entryid=2721&blogid=14 " However, that does not mean, of course, that the intellectual monopolists have given up: far from it. They have merely shifted their attack, and are now trying to use the proposed European Community Patent to create a backdoor for software patents across Europe: The aim of creating a Community patent is to give inventors the option of obtaining a single patent which is legally valid throughout the European Union. The expected advantages of this system are a substantial reduction in patenting costs (in particular those relating to translation and filing), simplified protection of inventions throughout the territory of the EU thanks to one single procedure, and the establishment of a single centralised system of litigation. The creation of a Community patent system remains a sensitive issue as this dossier is still deadlocked after many years of discussions between the European decision-makers. " I suppose that we might be able to discuss this further when Fosdem is running :) -- Richard

Certification schedule published
by Philip Paeps 08 Jan '10

08 Jan '10

We're happy to announce that there will again be an opportunity to take certification exams at FOSDEM 2010. This year, the Linux Professional Institute, the BSD Certification Group and Typo3 will be offering their respective exams. Information is available here: http://fosdem.org/2010/certification The schedule is here: http://fosdem.org/2010/schedule/tracks/certification Please sign up for exam sessions with the respective certification groups sooner rather than later as space is limited. In the case of BSDCA, exam papers also need to travel across an ocean and it helps to know to within a reasonable epsilon how many papers need to be shipped. - Philip -- Philip Paeps Please don't Cc me, I am philip(a)fosdem.org subscribed to the list.
