Keysigning: code on github
by Philip Paeps 02 Feb '12

02 Feb '12

Because someone wanted to hack a feature into our keyserver daemon, I've pushed the code to github. If anyone else is interested in hacking on it, or reusing it for another event... Go wild. https://github.com/ppaeps/fosdem-keysigning Most of that is highly FOSDEM-specific but might be inspiring to others. Or possibly serve as a warning. Yes, FOSDEM really is run by Perl scripts. - Philip -- Philip Paeps Senior Reality Engineer Ministry of Information

Room name typo
by Pascal Bleser 02 Feb '12

02 Feb '12

We had a slight (or not so slight) typo in one of the room names up to now: "U.218A" is actually UA2.118 (aka "Henrion"). Unfortunately, the room name will remain wrong in the booklet which is distributed to all visitors at the infodesks. Sorry for the confusion that might occur. https://fosdem.org/2012/schedule/room/ua2118 cheers -- Pascal Bleser <loki(a)fosdem.org> http://fosdem.org/ FOSDEM 2012 ::: 4 + 5 February 2012 in Brussels, Belgium Free and Opensource Software Developers European Meeting

I attended just for the keysigning party in 2009, 2010, and 2011. You cannot compare this year's weather to just "cold & windy" as the years before. I also remember who chickened out and didn't attend because of the 'cold' weather - dressed in a tshirt - being listed as organizer of the event :-) -- left blank, right bald

Keysigning: venue
by Philip Paeps 01 Feb '12

01 Feb '12

It's been pointed out to me that the OpenPGP keysigning event isn't listed on the schedule. For technical reasons, we can't (easily) list "outside" as a room on the schedule. Like last year and the years before, we will be outside. Sunday at 14:00. Expect the weather to be bad. Not "snow to your groin" bad, but "cold and generally miserable" bad. Dress accordingly and come prepared. The faster we get through the keysigning, the faster we can get back inside. - Philip -- Philip Paeps Senior Reality Engineer Ministry of Information

Name stickers!
by Kai Engert 01 Feb '12

01 Feb '12

Hi everyone, Fosdem is a great place to meet new people. But how do you find the people you are interested to talk to? How do you know if you have a common interest with the people that stand around you? This is a proposal that you wear a badge or a sticker that gives other's a hint which project you're involved with, for example "LibreOffice Localizer" or "Mozilla QA". Because Fosdem is a free conference and badges are expensive, we offer a compromise: Name stickers! We will try to provide a sufficient amount of non-permanent name stickers that you could attach to your t-shirt or jacket. (Disclaimer: According to the vendor of the stickers claims they should not cause any permanent damage to your cloth, we don't take over any responsibility in case something goes wrong, please make use of the stickers at your own risk.) Fosdem organizers have agreed to share the costs. This is also a good reminder that you might consider a small amount to donate for this great conference. You should be able to get your sticker Saturday morning! (For backup purposes, you might consider to bring a bad that you already have from another conference.) Best Regards and see you next weekend, Kai -- Sending me encrypted e-mail: - get my S/MIME cert from https://kuix.de/smime-keyserver/ - get my GPG/PGP key from http://pgp.uni-mainz.de/

General strike likely to impact FOSDEM?
by Richard Hartmann 31 Jan '12

31 Jan '12

Hi all, is it likely that the general, or some other, strike will be extended or repeated in a way which will affect FOSDEM? Local news tells me Bruessels is in a total deadlock and I would like to prepare if necessary. -- Richard

Re: [FOSDEM] Smartcard workshop at FOSDEM 2012

Le mardi 31 janvier 2012 à 11:50 +0100, Wouter Simons a écrit : > on a personal note :) > is there any oportunity to register for this work-shop or is it first > come first served ? You are right. Last year, we donated 100 smartcards at FOSDEM. People rushed in the room and some left immediately. As a result 50% of the audience had no smartcard. To avoid this situation, there are 3 different situations: 1) You may register online for a free ePass2003: http://www.gooze.eu/feitian-epass-2003-free-software-developer-kit Indicate "FOSDEM 2012" during checkout. Give your real name and address as a normal checkout. You only need to pick-up your token at FOSDEM, on first day (Saturday) or second day (Sunday) in the dev romm. I will be sitting in front of the room with OpenSC hackers. 50 ePass2003 will be reserved this way. First in, first served. 2) You may receive a free ePass2003 during the smartcard workshop. 50 additional ePass2003 will be available for the smartcard workshop audience. You will have to register writing your name on a paper. We wan to avoid people picking-up the ePass2003 and leaving immediately. So that the audience can hack around the ePass2003 during the workshop. 3) Free software kits If you are taking part in a free software project and would like to implement security features around hardware tokens, GOOZE ***always*** donates the epass2003. Just register on this page and we will ship to your address: http://www.gooze.eu/feitian-epass-2003-free-software-developer-kit Make a full description of your token. We always verify information, even looking at source code before shipping a free token. This usually takes 24/48 hours before your order is validated or rejected. The reason why we donate the ePass2003 to free software communities is that until recently tokens were very expensive and exotic hardware. Donating a token is a first step before people discover this ***proven*** technology. Hope this helps. Kind regards, -- Jean-Michel Pouré - Gooze - http://www.gooze.eu
